Pinpointing the Premier League’s latest whipping boys proved key to captaincy success in Gameweek 24, with Romelu Lukaku (9.7) scoring four in Everton’s 6-3 rout of Bournemouth at Goodison Park.

That scoreline means that the Cherries have shipped 16 goals in their last five matches and should ensure that players from their next opponents, Manchester City, fare well in this week Captain poll.

Given his brace against Swansea at the weekend – bringing his tally to three goals in just two Premier League starts – City starlet Gabriel Jesus (9.2) is likely to be a frontrunner ahead of Monday’s Vitality Stadium clash.

In terms of frequency of goal attempts in the box, he is now faster than team-mate Sergio Aguero (12.8), who found himself on the bench for a second successive match against the Swans.

While the Samba star has gathered more than 88,000 new FPL managers since Saturday, 38,000 have jettisoned the Argentine.

City midfielders Kevin De Bruyne (10.6) and Raheem Sterling (7.8) could also benefit from Aguero’s plummeting stock. The Belgian schemer now has two goals and an assist in his last three, while the England winger has been the master of creative consistency, recording eight assists in his last nine.

Leicester City’s fragile backline is another worth targeting when considering where to place the armband. Manchester United’s comfortable 3-0 win over the Foxes at the King Power Stadium on Sunday means that Claudio Ranieri’s defence have conceded 10 over their last four

Next up for the Italian’s hapless rearguard is a trip to Swansea City, which promotes the Welsh side’s set piece specialist Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.4) as a strong differential captaincy option. The 8.2% owned Icelander now has three goals and a pair of assists under new manager Paul Clement, as well as three double-digit hauls at the Liberty Stadium.

Another alternative armband candidate is Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe (7.8), who scored a brace away to Crystal Palace at the weekend. The 27.8% owned veteran next faces a home tie against a Southampton side that has shipped 11 goals in their last six matches, with just one shutout earned over that spell.

Following their successful day out at Leicester, Manchester United once again face a favourable defence, when Watford drop by Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Hornets have just two clean sheets and have conceded 22 times on the on the road, which presents Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) with a golden opportunity to top this week’s poll. The Swede’s strike against the Foxes was his 15th of the season, and he has been the FPL most popular captain pick for seven successive Gameweeks.

Alternative United assets include Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.8), who racked up a 14 point return on Sunday, his biggest of the campaign, thanks to a goal, assist and maximum bonus returns.

Before Marco Silva took charge of Hull City, their trip to Arsenal this weekend would have cemented Alexis Sanchez (11.8)’s captaincy credentials. But in his four league matches in charge, the Portuguese has seemingly transformed the Tigers.

Over that period, Silva’s side have defeated Liverpool and Bournemouth, kept Manchester United at bay in a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford and proved a stubborn opponent to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where they eventually lost 2-0.

Although the 35.8% owned Sanchez, who has 10 attacking returns in his last 12, is likely to be a popular selection, the considerable improvement from his Gameweek opponents could see him miss out on top spot.

Last week’s captaincy poster boy Lukaku could suffer the same fate: he is unlikely to find the Middlesbrough defence as obliging as the Cherries when Everton visit the Riverside Stadium next weekend. Aitor Karanka’s troops have conceded 14 goals in 12 home matches, earning four clean sheets.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of this week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

This team G2G? Or use my FT for anything? Right to bench Walker over Pieters?

    Heaton
    Alonso - Coleman - Pieters
    Sanchez - Eriksen - Siggy(C) - Phillips
    Kane - Zlatan - Carroll

    (Jaku - Walker - Capoue - Evans)

Problem is, if I play Walker and it's a tight, dull game, 1-0 pool perhaps, then I get Kane 2, Erik 2, Walks 2. Could kill my GW in 1 game

Why is Ibrahimovic dropping so fast? I know there's the upcoming blank but he just scored and has Watford at home next. Don't casuals normally just look at whether someone has just scored, and at a push whether he has a good fixture coming up?

Has FPL been advertising the blank GW that much?

Is Hull's apparent rise in defensive ability enough to put you off captaining Sanchez?

Doesn't seem to be getting mentioned as much as I thought he would this week. I took a look at shots conceded by Hull before and since Silva took over (average per game)

    Before Silva (20 matches)

    Shots conceded - 19
Shots conceded in box - 10.5

    After Silva (4 matches)

    Shots conceded - 14
Shots conceded in box - 8.5

Worth noting that Silva has faced Chelsea, Man United and Liverpool in the 4 fixtures he's managed, so it's quite impressive that they've reduced the amount of shots they're conceding.

Is that enough to make you look towards other captaincy options?

Not really a massive improvement according to those stats.

I would have thought Jesus would walk the poll this week, bang on form and against Bournemouth but not the case so far.

Interesting. I own Robertson and his CS this weekend was a pleasant surprise.
How will they play against mid/low-table teams though? Will their CS potential be reduced in matches where they have more possession and are playing for 3 points?

Yes. Together with Chelsea away and 2 blanks, these were the reasons I felt ok selling Sanchez's last week.

I will still be hiding behind the sofa this week though.

Not sure - Ibra is certainly an option for me but the armband is on Alexis as he has more explosive potential. He's also been the most consistent on top of that - only 2 blanks in the last 12. If this changes I'll consider changing captains more, but until then I don't see the point of overthinking it.

Better of going Tom Carroll and pocketing the change and using that money to get yourself an extra premium defender .

    Choose:

    A) Mee (CHE) ➡ Baines (mid)

    B) Benteke (stk, MID, wba) ➡ Defoe (SOU, eve, MCI)

    C) Both A & B for (-4)

Have only 5 GW28 assured starters so I really want Baines.
Benteke is crap and Defoe is just so good.
    Leaning towards C.

So you went Benteke over Carroll after last weeks debate ?
And you prefer Defoe over Carroll ? Any reason?
      On this dilemma myself.

I'm looking at C with Cedric-Cahill for a Chelsea defensive double up even if they have a Gw 28 blank I could easily pocket 3-4 guarenteed clean sheets over the uncertainty than Everton can actually keep clean sheets away, and have an extra game .
Mid away looks great for a clean sheet for sure but not certain about other weeks.

I don't want to go down the Carroll route tbh he's too injury prone that also because he doesn't blank in one week.

Defoe has been very consistent is on pens and has good fixtures on the horizon.

I thought Benteke was a good pick but Palace are nowhere near settled under Big Sam made a mistake by getting him in.

Rage transfered Jesus and Lukaku (Didn't want to take a hit and waited a week for Ron...) in, starting to regret that Jesus move though with the blanks coming up. Worth the C for this week though?

Amat not playing anything and soon "fodders" might come in handy.
Whats your thought on the Hull guy Ranocchia at 4.5m? Nice fixtures and no blanks.

      Maguire (4.4m) or Robertson (4.3m)

Nothing wrong with Ranocchia but might as well get one of the cheaper options. Have a look at Maguire's goal attempts and pen box touches in the last 4 GWs.

Ibra was 11.5 this year, Kane 11 (scored 20+ 2 seasons in a row), Costa...well, bad season to be fair.

If Jesus scores in every remaining game then maybe he'll hit 12 but it would be a high price point just because Aguero goes.

Anyone else stupidly hold off on doing Aguero to Lukaku? Can't remember the last time I had such a bad gameweek when so many others scored over 70.
Between Aguero (C), Evans being injured and benching Jakup, absolutely destroyed my gameweek. 280K now. Have to swallow pride and aim for top 50k.

I have got rid - this was the final straw for me. Even if he scores against Bournemouth, too much uncertainty and unreliability for his price. He has cost me an insane amount of points since I got him back in.

          • 13 Years

Completely agree that he is not worth keeping long term. But after being benched twice in a row, there should be a good chance of him playing. Definitely selling before their GW 26 blank, but my thoughts are about whether he will outscore Lukaku in GW 25. Aguero has Bournemouth away, while Lukaku has Boro away.

Hull have picked up, and with Arsenal's last two games I think Sanchez (c) is a red herring.

Deciding between Ibra and Siggy now I think.
