Arsenal’s annual Champions League exit appears imminent following a chastening night in Bavaria, with a hamstring issue for popular Fantasy asset Laurent Koscielny merely compounding the misery.

Bayern Munich 5 Arsenal 1

An injury to defender Laurent Koscielny prompted a second-half capitulation of epic proportions as Arsenal were blown away by Bayern.

Alexis Sanchez had earlier given the Gunners huge hope that they could take the tie back to The Emirates with all still to play for when he finished with aplomb when his initial effort from the spot was saved.

But once Koscielny departed with a hamstring problem early in the second half, Arsenal’s resolve dissolved and three goals in ten chaotic minutes quickly followed.

The Frenchman has started all bar the first match of the season in the league for the Gunners. They conceded four that day – their worst defensive performance of the campaign until last night’s debacle.

The only crumb of comfort for the 16.9% of managers who own the centre-half is that he has until March 4 to recover as Arsenal will sit out Gameweek 26 because of Southampton’s involvement in the EFL Cup final. Those who were contemplating selling him, due to that blank and a Gameweek 27 trip to Liverpool, may well have had their minds made up by this latest set-back.

Kieran Gibbs – at 4.7 a cheap way into the Arsenal defence – was given back-to-back starts for the first time this season.

But Arsenal’s left side proved to be a rich source of attacking joy for Bayern all night and it would be no surprise if Nacho Monreal is returned to the starting XI in the league, if not for Monday’s FA Cup tie at Sutton.

Two regular midfielders, Mesut Ozil and Alex Iwobi, also failed to impress.

The 6.5%-owned Ozil has just three assists and no goals since Gameweek 15, while Iwobi (3.2%) has started the last nine league matches, providing two goals and a pair of assists.

Beleaguered manager Arsene Wenger has options in midfield and Iwobi, in particular, looks vulnerable either to a like-for like swap with Theo Walcott or a re-jig involving Sanchez moving back from his successful stint up front.

Arsenal’s post-Gameweek 27 schedule is generally a favourable one all the way through to the very end of April. But only the ever-reliable Sanchez currently inspires confidence in a team whose limitations were otherwise exposed by a ruthless Bayern.

The second leg with Bayern sits three days after the Gameweeek 27 trip to Anfield, although it’s surely unlikely that Wenger will allow that to influence his teamsheet and approach for the Liverpool clash.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny (Gabriel 49), Gibbs, Xhaka, Coquelin (Giroud 77), Iwobi (Walcott 66), Ozil, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sanchez.
Subs not used: Cech, Monreal, Welbeck, Elneny.

Just out of interest, I'm hopeful that the FPL show tonight will feature the angle used to decipher the McAuley touch on the Evans header.

Well given that there are many who believe it was a completely ridiculous decision, I think it's worthwhile clearing it up, particuarly as MOTD have not shown any angles that highlight it. Can't really discuss the Gameweek without mentioning it.

That does show the touch but I believe there is a side on angle that's even better. It's actually a pretty significant touch and even talk that Evans' header may not have been on target.

    A. ibra to lukaku, save a transfer and play pieters (tot)
    B. Diomande and sanchez to lukaku and snodgrass and go back to 3-4-3

Would you take a -4 to change 2 players that don't play (Holgate and Ake) to two players that do play (2 of Coleman, Robertson and Mawson) and will also play both the GW26 and 28 blanks? The other option is changing one of them and also Anichebe but I don't like any of the strikers who will play for GW26 and 28 (Carroll and Llorente - I have Lukaku already). Any advice would be appreciated!

    1. MTPockets
      9 years, 5 months ago

Probably. 2 non-starters is a waste and net transfer cost likely not negative. As you say, still have to weigh up against other transfer options though.

If you can get Coleman and either of the others for -4pts and they will give you an extra player in 26 & 28, yes I would.

        • 9 Years

Would you rather get Coleman + another defender or Coleman + a striker? Carroll is my preference amongst the available striking options but 1) he plays Chelsea in GW27 and 2) he is injury prone.

I would get Coleman and one of those two probably.

They are cheap and replacing a non-starter, so no a big impact on your team to get starters for 28

Front 3 is Anichebe, Lukaku and Ibra. I have 1 FT left (already got rid of Aguero for Lukaku). I am going to wait anyway as Borough may well not qualify in which case Defoe becomes available as an option but if not I want to be planning ahead.

Guy in first place in my ML is 60 points ahead.

Main advantage I have is I have me BB chip left he hasn't

I can do it right or will it be tough?

You can do it....make that BB count in a DGW and you could potentially half that lead.

That leaves 30-40pts over 13 weeks, is 3pts per week.

Easy. In fact a couple good captains and you're there...

I have Anichebe, Grant, Holgate and Ake. I want to bring in 2 of the following for GW26 for a -4:
    1) Jaku
    2) Robertson
    3) Mawson
    4) Carroll
    5) Coleman

    Who should I bring in?

    1. Jafooli

      All five good options.

Defo 5 & as one of your options hardly plays (injured) could half gamble on 4.

      Otherwise 1

Can anyone give me advice on transfers they can see here with a focus on being best prepared for the blank gameweeks (and following DGWs)?

    0.3 and 1FT

    Foster/Pick

    Alonso/ Walker/ F Mori/ Pieters/ Amat

    Sanchez/ Alli/ Stan/ Iwobi/ Fletcher

    Ibra/ Costa/ Lukaku

Team good to go for this week guys?

    Foster
    McAuley - Alonso - Mee - Lovren
    Hazard - Ali - Eriksen - Fletcher
    Costa - Lukaku (C)

    Bench - Jaku - Iwobi - Ibra - Kinglsey

Unsure whether to play Jaku in front of Foster tbh
