Due to the FA Cup quarter-finals taking place this weekend, our Gameweek 28 captain poll selection is limited to players from just eight teams.

Among this reduced group, assets from Liverpool and Everton, who both have favourable home ties, are expected to dominate.

It would be no surprise to see Romelu Lukaku (10.0) at the summit after the Belgian struck his 18th goal of the season against Spurs to become Everton’s most prolific Premier League scorer.

The Golden Boot contender, who is just one shy of current leader Harry Kane, collides with a West Brom defence that boasts a single clean sheet on the road and has shipped eight over their last four away outings.

With a goal and two assists in his last quartet of matches, Ross Barkley (7.1) offers a cheaper armband option amongst Ronald Koeman’s ranks. So, too, does Seamus Coleman (6.0), for those willing to take a risk on captaining a defender.

The right back’s blank against Spurs was the first time since Gameweek 19 that he has failed to deliver either defensive or attacking returns. This consistency is likely to mean he overshadows Leighton Baines (5.7), despite the latter’s spot-kick duties.

Burnley’s visit to Anfield will likely ensure that Liverpool’s midfield provides Lukaku’s main competition.

Sadio Mane’s (9.4) goal and assist at home to Arsenal on Saturday evening adds to an impressive record in front of his own fans – only Chelsea’s Eden Hazard can match the Senegal international’s eight home goals among FPL midfielders.

Seven strikes on home turf makes Roberto Firmino (8.4), who also scored and assisted against the Gunners, another strong option. Meanwhile, Philippe Coutinho’s (8.2) four close range efforts on Saturday, more than any other Reds player, makes him another to consider. The Brazilian has recorded six attempts on goal in both his previous two Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, Swansea City’s continued renaissance under Paul Clement keeps their players in the frame for the captaincy when they drop in on Hull City this weekend.

With five goals in the Clement era, Fernando Llorente (6.4) is set to attract votes, along with set-piece specialist Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.6). The Icelander has three strikes and five assists since the new manager took the helm, returning points in seven of his last eight Gameweek starts.

Llorente, who scored a fourth brace of the season against Burnley at the weekend, is currently the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 28, with more than 56,000 new owners since Saturday’s deadline.

Hull, under their new manager Marco Silva, are also undergoing something of a recovery, having beaten Liverpool and drawn against Manchester United since the Portuguese took charge ahead of Gameweek 21. However, with nine goals conceded over that time, the fragility of the Tigers defence is still evident.

West Ham’s visit to Bournemouth looks ripe for goals and, as a result, offers a raft of alternative captaincy candidates.

Over their last six matches, the Cherries have conceded 15 goals and failed to register a clean sheet, while the Hammers have been similarly poor, claiming a solitary clean sheet and shipping nine goals.

For Eddie Howe’s men, Josh King (5.4) looks to be the most secure route to points. The first choice penalty taker in the absence of long-term injury victim Callum Wilson, the Norwegian has scored an impressive five times in his last six Gameweeks – with a mere 3% ownership, he looks an intriguing differential candidate for this reduced Gameweek.

Among the most likely Hammers’ captaincy candidates are Andy Carroll (6.2), should he have recovered from a groin injury ahead of tonight’s clash with Chelsea at the London Stadium.

Michail Antonio (6.9), who is suspended for tonight’s Blues encounter and sits in 8.3% of FPL teams, is another valid option: he has scored eight goals and assisted another seven this term.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of this week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

    Do you think Grosicki is a good option for 5th mid;

Too expensive for 5th mid IMO. But he was pretty good in the Euros and seems to be getting into his groove now with great fixtures to come. So he could actually be a 4th mid. But then, for 0.1m less you can have Josh King who's on pens, so it's quite a tough call between them.

Make or break for my season! Can't see any better alternatives. Worth -8? (0.7 ITB, 1 FT)

    Aguero ➡️ Lukaku
    Sterling ➡️ Siggy
    Defoe ➡️ Llorente / Gabby

    Robles
Alonso / Walker / Funes Mori / Brunt
    Sterling / Snodgrass / Mane
    Aguero / Defoe / Kane

    Heaton, Allen, de Roon, Amat

Will this do the job ?

    Grant
    Alonso/Walker/Coleman
    Sanchez/Mane/Sterling/Siggy
    Kane/Kaku/Gabi

    What would you change ??

I would just check up on Sanchez and see there is nothing wrong between him and Wenger - and that he starts

Also, would replace Sterling with a Liv mid or a Alli

Wenger is going to tell him that if he puts a shift in until the end of the season and doesn't rock the boat anymore then he will be allowed to leave in the summer. I don't see further problems with him. Sanchez is in the shop window now, much like another passionate former gooner who hated being subbed and missing minutes - Adebayor XD

        1. LakhaneeFC
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

Fair enough. But I don't think the problem ever was that Sanchez needed motivation to put a shift in

This is Wenger benching him and depriving him of minutes, which is very different from a Berahino/Leicester situation where the player doesn't want to play

So I think it's fair to keep a close lookout on how Wenger deals with Sanchez

          1. _Make
            • 9 Years
            9 years, 4 months ago

Completely agree. I take back the part about putting a shift in because he's one of the hardest-working players in the PL, but where Arsenal are and where Sanchez feels like he should be are worlds apart at the moment and this is unlikely to change. He's at the peak of his career and doesn't want to be held back anymore, IMHO. If Wenger's on the way out then he won't care much what happens next season, but he has his 'qualified for CL' statistic to maintain and he'll want Sanchez on side for that. That's why I think there will be a compromise between them.

Alright, I've decided not to be super punty with Coleman or Llorente in GW 28. Which leaves me with the following captain options:

    1. Mane
    2. Lukaku (Safe bet, probably will be in most teams and captained most)

I know how bad Liv are against weaker teams, but for a change Burnley are equally bad away from home. Plus it's Mane at home

If you're chasing, would it make sense to go Mane over Lukaku?

82 points with Kun(TC), Sane, Stones, Grant and Andy Carroll still to play.

    I went from 1million to 600k rank.

Yeh. Shame that city didn't try to get lots of goals vs Sunderland. Seemed to just want to control the game.

If Aguero had scored that effort towards the end I would have got a sane assist and Aguero goal. Was gutted Pickford saved it!!

Thinking of doing Eriksen > King tonight for free which will leave me with:

    Heaton

    Holgate , Evans

    Mane, Lallana, King, T Carroll

    Lukaku

Not playing: Pickford, Jones, Alonso, PVA, Pedro, Aguero, Zlatan.

    Anything worth a hit?

I would not be selling Eriksen for King, Spurs have a great run of fixtures after the blank and King has been some what reliant on penalties for his points. Bournemouth do have 2 nice home games but is there no one else you could sacrifice besides Eriksen....

    GW 28 Team:
    1 FT, 0.4 ITB

    Heaton
    Holgate - Ranocchia - Fonte
    Carroll - Mane
    Lukaku - Rondon

    Valdes - Luiz - Pedro - Eriksen - Aguero - Sane - Pieters

Waiting for Wednesday's game before deciding on:
    A) Sane out for Lanzini/ Antonio/ King/ Siggy
    B) Aguero out for Llorente
    C) Holgate out for Vertonghen

Will most likely take a hit.

Unlikely to be back in 30 though. Still a few weeks away is all I keep reading. If it gets to GW 31/32 then you're probably better off with Vert and the extra couple of games. Could cover Rose's future attacking points for cheaper.

Yeah, small wins. My bench has the equally horrible Adam Smith. Previously, because of "potential attacking returns" from Smith, he'd be first sub and Capoo 2nd. I swear, every time Smith got subbed in, he'd get 0 (a fair few times) and I'd be so depressed over seeing Capoo's 2 points on the bench. Lesson learned and Capoo is always first sub. Luckily, this week, I placed Williams second sub and Smith last. Guess what Williams scored. Yup, 0.

        1. McQueen

Yup, literally playing with 10 players last two games, with Phillips missing. OK, I'm the one to blame as I don't have better bench (Capoue, Holebas, Amat). Did player comparison between Capoue and Holebas and Holebas came on top by far, so I went with him. Of course didn't see SOU scoring 4 at WAT. Looked at them as possible 2 pointers with Holebas maybe getting an odd assist if I'm lucky. Lesson learned! 😉 Better go for 2 certain points than take a risk with these players. 😉

Good luck, mate. Soon we'll be WBA players free, so it's gonna feel liberating after GW28. Can't wait. 🙂

Both Coutinho and Lukaku are pretty fixture proof and play next week, so why take a hit to take them out when you can do it week on week for free?

          Just a thought

I meant after 28, taking out Coutinho and Mane this week would be insane 🙂

Sorry I meant GW29 onwards too, I understand you want to shuffle them out, but not sure I would be taking a hit to do it,

I will be doing similar but will be patient and use a FT each week.

              Each to their own 🙂

      I brought in Llorente

      Or double up with Firmino/Coutinho

Does 8 players seem like the average for GW 28?

For those who have planned, 8 or 9 seems to be about right.

I'm going with 9 but for a hit

Think 7 is the minimum, so you'll be fine with 8

Got 11/10 depends on Phillips (2 goalies as well)...think with those fixtures - you might as well be ok with 7-8...specially if you get C right.

    Heaton/Foster
    Coleman McAuley
    Mane Siggy Philips
    Llorente

Walker, Holebas, Love, Sterling, Zaha, Ibra, Kun

I'm surely doing one of Kun/Ibra -> Lukaku. What other moves to do for a hit(one/two)?

    A. Zaha/Sterling -> LIV mid
    B. Zaha/Sterling -> WHU mid
    C. Ibra/Kun -> Carroll
    D. Holebas -> Mawson

I want to switch to 3 up top and get someone in for GW28 and have cover elsewhere.
To hold as a 5th mid until the end of the season:
    King OR Frazer

This might be the first time this season that my whole front 7 gets in the points:

    Alli (12) Siggy (5) Sterling (6,...) Mane (13)
    Aguero (7,...) Lukaku (6) Crouch (5,....)

I want to bring in King for GW28 but i've got this niggling feeling that i've already missed his points. Anyone else feel the same?

    -----------------------Foster---------------------
    ------------Coleman------McAuley---------
    Phillips---King---Siggy---Fer---Mane(C)
    -----------------------Lukaku--------------------

The old 2-5-1 formation with 9 players. Sufficient this week?
