Southampton and Manchester United grind out a goalless draw at St Mary’s as Manolo Gabbiadini’s Fantasy misfortunes go from bad to worse in the penultimate match of double Gameweek 37.

On the Rise

Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens
The only defender to survive Claude Puel’s double Gameweek tinkering, Yoshida retained his role to start for the nineteenth successive league outing in last night’s clash with Man United.

A total of nine points accrued across the pair of matches against Middlesbrough and United was more than any member of the Saints’ backline as the St Mary’s outfit collected a fifth clean sheet in 10 attempts.

Owned by a mere 5% of FPL managers, Yoshida has now delivered 33 points in his previous six home appearances. He looks a secure final-day pick at home to a Stoke City side that has failed to score in six of their previous seven on the road.

Stephens was rested for the first match of the double only to return to the Southampton XI last night and earn two bonus points.

The youngster’s ability to collect bonus is key here. He has earned 10 additional points over those five clean sheets, compared with Yoshida’s five bonus across the same fixtures – potentially a decisive factor for those currently holding both and mulling over which to bench for the Stoke match. Southampton now have three shut-outs in four with Stephens and Yoshida in the heart of defence.

Over 62,000 FPL managers owned both Yoshida and Stephens, benefiting from 17 points over the Gameweek 37 fixtures.

In Decline

Manolo Gabbiadini
Rested for the weekend win at Middlesbrough, the Italian returned to Puel’s starting XI against the Red Devils.

But as far as his loyal 8% owners are concerned, Gabbiadini may as well have warmed the bench for all the good he did.

Failing quite spectacularly as a double Gameweek asset, the winter signing stepped up to miss a penalty and deliver zero points over the Saints’ pair of fixtures before being hauled off just after the hour-mark to put his chastened ownership out of their misery.

Gabbiadini, essentially, provided a meagre four points across back-to-back doubles and now has just a single assist in his last seven league outings – a far cry from the form that harvested four goals in his first three Gameweek appearances.

Over 18,000 FPL managers have already sold him out ahead of the home encounter with Stoke – yes, he may well start, but judging by last night’s output that clearly guarantees little going on the striker’s current form.

David de Gea
United’s most popular FPL player and the third most-owned (33%) in the game, the Spaniard missed out altogether as his side chalked up a sixteenth clean sheet of the campaign – level with Chelsea and second only to Spurs’ 17.

Those still holding De Gea will now need to rely on their second keepers or dip into the market after Jose Mourinho confirmed that the Spaniard will play no further part in the season.

“David? I think the first match against LA Galaxy in pre-season in Los Angeles. I hope to play Joel Pereira against Crystal Palace, I hope to play Sergio in the final and hopefully, we don’t have problems with these two keepers”.

With Eric Bailly limping off last night and Mourinho revealing his intentions to field a number of youngsters in Sunday’s clash with Palace ahead of Wednesday’s Europa League final against Ajax, there’s no surprise to see owners of the likes of Antonio Valencia (14,000+) and Marcus Rashford (18,000+) already selling and seeking alternatives.

Sanchez too. I think Arsenal have improved of late and Liverpool will be very nervous. Alexis is just simply a more destructive player too, even if the fixture is a little harder.

How did you use your chips this year and was it successful?

1st WC - Used in week 4 to get in the early performers. Pre-WC rank 585K, two weeks later 160k.
Happy - I do it every year as it helps with team value and gets in early form players.

2nd WC - Used early in week 21 to sort my team out. Pre-wildcard rank 253k, two weeks later 87k.
Very pleased, this turned my season around.

AOA - Used Week 7 for Capoue instead of Collins. Net impact 0 points.
There were a few times later on in the season that I wished I'd had this chip. This was a waste.

TC - Used week 27 for Aguero's double. Net Impact 9 points.
A disappointing score for Aguero but the decision made sense and I will do similar next year.

BB - Used week 37. Net Impact 24 points.
Very happy, this was my highest bench score all season and I am convinced that this chip should be used in a big DGW in conjunction with either a WC or very good planning to maximize players.

1st WC - After a crappy first 7 GWs, OR 1.7M, I wildcarded and got 39 points. Both Benteke and Aguero got me minus points in GW8 - so not great. Long term it did not do too much, still being OR 1.5 M after GW17.

TC - GW27, Aguero DGW got me 3x9 points. Could have been worse, but could also been a lot better.

      2nd WC - GW36, took me from OR 39k to 20k.

BB - Currently on it, as of now on OR 11k.

AOA - no plans to use it. I've got Anichebe and Gabbi, for crying out loud.

All in all, the chips have not done too much for me, with a slight exception for the 2nd WC. Finding form from GW17 outwards, with generally better captaining, seems to be more important in this case.

      1st WC Gameweek 6 - Rose from 91k to 32k within 2 weeks

2nd WC Gameweek 36 - Back to back 5 digit ranks in the 2 weeks afterwards

AOA Gameweek 23 - Played Barnes ahead of Pieters. Absoulutely useless, actually lost me points GW rank 3.2m

TC - Gameweek 37 - Sanchez, saved it for this week specifically and it paid off

BB - Gameweek 34 - Could've gone better but I was happy with how it turned out

Flip a coin. For me one of Cout/Sanch just about edges it for being mids (more points for attacking returns, clean sheet bonus etc). Costa and Jesus, however, play against oppositions with virtually no defence and both look ripe for hauls.

I usually make a list, but every year I end up going against it 🙂 It depends so much on prices, signings, and fixtures!

I can promise you that you will not be able to afford those 6 big hitters. 2-3 is the max you can afford.

Jesus looks likely to be in mine 🙂

Yeah the new home will create a problem - two Spurs players would have been high on the list, but now? They were terrible in Europe at Wembley this season and teams always suffer when they move. Given that Spurs success has been built around extraordinary home form, it's a worry.

Hey dude! Yeah think you're right - just gotta hope Kompany gets the start, I'm sure he will cos City want to make sure of top 4. Am doing Coutinho in for Eriksen (also own Kane - none in ML own Eriksen anyway so no loss) to get the 'Pool cover.

It was a bit underwhelming with Huth and Gab returning no points, and just the one from Holgate. 129 with Vert, Eriksen, and Kane left. What about yourself?

Ahh man sorry to hear - I benefitted last night from Gabbi fail but lots of my mates are ruing getting him in haha

Pretty well actually, 157 (-8) with Eriksen and Kane to go. 1 piters from Anichebe and Holgate here but all in all, pretty decent otherwise - need 12 from Kane+Eriksen to beat last year's personal best (168 from 34). And rank halved (now inside top 30k... top 20k would be great, but top 10k I think is too far now)

Most importantly, overhauled arch rival in ML (my cousin) after trailing the entire season, and have a 35 pt cushion (+Kane/Eriksen (-Alli)) and entered the money spots (podium), plus have probably won the H2 prize as well. So pretty chuffed!

What move you doing this week?

That's a fantastic total! Nice work!

It depends on Fabregas news, but I was thinking Hazard and Gabb for Fabregas and Sturridge/Vardy. Also looked at Coutinho and Lllorente in for those players.

I've got a couple of other final day money tournaments though in other games, so I'm a little distracted by them.

Hi mate, sorry had to go for a conference call!

Yeah I'm just relieved tbh - was looking mighty dicey after the first half on Tuesday night, with my rival's (C) Jesus raking in the points and Sanchez blanking... my other half said she'd "never seen you so happy" when Sanchez scored his first, then second!

Hah understand what you mean, we don't play other games (too much for me I think!) - our ML is what it's all about, so a lot of moves I've been doing make zero sense on FFS but are all about getting traction in it.. just so glad I'm back in a good spot!

Hmm, I am keeping Haz myself, think he'll keep playing him to keep him fit ahead of the FA Cup final. I would def get Gabb out I think! I think owning at least 1 'Pool player has gotta be where it's at, after all it is them, us (Arsenal) and City with (prima facie) something to play for. I know it's been a bit besmirched on here by some but I do think it's a legitimate thing to take into consideration!

Not sure what to make of Cesc being in Barcelona for a shoe shop opening. It hardly strikes me as good preparation for Sunday...but then does it really matter.

Yeah, maybe. No chance he'd be let of training if the game mattered I suppose but under the circumstances Conte letting him have a night away for a night out with Suarez and Messi is a good thank you...

Players (Particularly some of the Spanish ones) often tend to go on early week trips over to Europe late season. Wouldn't worry at all.

New hypothesis that I've generated. I sadly follow way too many footballers on instagram/snapchat and I've seen quite a few flying abroad (To their home country) for a couple of days here and there.

I know teams train less later on in the season so I guess this is how they utilise their time, I'd do the same!

Hey, Sess! It's me again. Sorry if I bother you. I need your advice again.

Next week, I'm going to the final in our H2H league. My opponent got two chips: AOA & BB, while I've got zero.

        Here's my team (1FT, 1.1mln ITB):
        Caballero Cech
        Stephens Alonso Vertonghen Holding Kompany
        Carroll Alli Sanchez Hazard King
        Jesus Kane Anichebe

        His (1FT, 0.7mln ITB):
        Boruc Nordfeldt
Alonso Jagielka Pieters Donald Love Bradley Smith
Coutinho Xhaka Sanchez Alli de Roon
        Kane Lukaku Gabbiadini

What do you suggest me to do? Thanks!!!

        1. Sess!
          • 15 Years
          9 years, 7 days ago

Your team absolutely smashes his. Don't think much to worry about BB as his squad is poor. From your current team of set up:

          Cech
          Alonso Kompany Vert Stephens
          Alli Sanchez Haz King
          Jesus Kane

Then it's just a case of trying to get a steer whether haz and Alonso play. Haz > Cout/Kdb has been popular. You could prob just leave it as it is and be fine.

Carroll > Albrighton potentially another move put not sure if it would prove more fruitful than playing Stephens.

Anyone else amazed that Yoshida ha actually become quite a decent player?

I remember seeing him last year, and at the start of the year, and thinking he was awful. Thought they were in big trouble with Fonte leaving and Van Dijk getting injured.

Forgetting FPL he's been fantastic, looked really composed last night, as did Stephens. Credit to the defensive coach at Southampton maybe? Lovren seemed a much better defender when he was on the south coast.

Oh and then he's been fantastic for FPL too.
