Development Squad – Update One Is Live

I’m delighted to announce that our first update to the members’ area, based on the initial work carried out by our new developer Mat aka “matzi11a”, is now live.

Those of you who have already signed up for the new season will now find the following features and fixes are now available:

New Home and Away Filters
We’ve now extended the number of filters available to allow users to filter statistics by the last two, four and six home and away matches.

The facility to filter Opta stats in this way is unique to Fantasy Football Scout and will enable Fantasy managers to improve their analysis of player performance.

As an example, we can now take a player like Eden Hazard and compare his last four or six home matches with his last four or six away trips to assess just how his performances differ.

We’ve also extended this to our maps on the player comparison tool so you can compare average position and plot key actions.

To achieve this, Mat has split matchdays from Gameweeks so, when a player has two fixtures in a single Gameweek, you can see the average position for both matches, not just one disc representing his average for the Gameweek.

Sky Sports Bonus Statistics
Our Sky Sports tables now include bonus points according to the two-tier system introduced by the game for 2016/17. We’ve also added the Shots on Target bonus points to the tables. We will obviously amend these to reflect any changes for the new season.

Time Played Modification
We’ve tweaked our Time Played statistic so that stoppage time is no longer recorded by default. This means that players who completed a full match are now capped at 90 minutes, while those introduced during the match are awarded minutes up to the 90th minute.

This brings us in line with other statistics sites – including Opta themselves – and therefore also brings our “minutes per…” data in line with Opta’s own numbers.

For those still wanting access to the raw Time Played minutes, including stoppage time, we will add a new “Exact Time Played” statistic and make it available in the Custom Stats Table listing so you can make your own tables with this data. We have added this task to Mat’s list for a future update.

Touches Modifications
To prepare for Touch maps and Touch heatmaps, we’ve carried out a full revision of our Touches data to bring this in line with Opta’s changes which included the introduction a new event – blocked pass – as a designated touch.

What’s next?

We’re now looking to start fixing and adding the statistics required to model the Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points System (BPS), so we can offer dedicated tables.

This will enable FPL managers to carry out more in-depth analysis of the BPS, including the facility to see baseline BPS (without goals, assists and clean sheets).

The first step is to add Fantasy Assists to our database which will replace the standard Opta assists in our tables.

We will then look to fix and add statistics such as Caught Offside, Big Chances Missed and Winning Goals.

As previously mentioned, we are looking to be transparent with our development process from this point on.

Not only will we release more “Development Squad” articles updating you on progress and updates, you can also look at our current roadmap and progress via this task board. You can see which task Mat is currently working on, what’s been done and in test for review and even vote for tasks on the board if you register a Trello account.

In addition, if you’ve any feature that you would like us to consider for the roadmap, please drop me a line at mark@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

Your input will help ensure we’re embarking on the right additions and improvements and setting our priorities accordingly.

2017/18 Memberships Now Available

A reminder that memberships for the 2017/178 are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00).

Last season’s memberships expired on June 1, but you can now renew to get access to the members area.

Existing registered users can upgrade via this link. New users, who are yet to get a registered account, can sign up via this link.

The Guardian are now reporting that Liverpool will pay £60m for an injured VVD, not £50m!!!!

    Absolutely sickening. World's gone mad.

What is it about Liverpool and Southampton? Has someone at St. Mary's got photos of John W. Henry playing golf with the devil?

Southampton know how good he is and that Liverpool are desperate for a quality CB. Of course he isn't worth 50 odd million but if Liverpool aren't going to pay it someone else will

VvD valued at 50m ... or even 60m!!!
    What a load of baloney.

This looks like another great bit of business by Southampton.
2 years ago Lovren was seen as the 'rock' of a succesful Saints defence at a similar age as VvD with more international caps. Price 20m.

Prior to that a young Luke Shaw was bought by ManU for approx 30m.
Price inflated by young age (potential) and probably because he was English (?)

Nathanial Clyne - English Internationalist, younger than VvD, Liverpool bought for 12.5m (great business for Liverpool, out of contract!)

Fonte, seen by many as the defender that should have been bought rather than Lovren. West Ham payed a perceived high figure of 8m for a 33 year old.

Ryan Bertrand - similar age to VvD, English player breaking into International squad, Saints payed only 10m for him.

Yoshida!! Japanese internationalist who Saints payed 3m for. If VvD hadn't got injured what would his value have been? 2m, 5m.
After a relatively solid 6 months playing alongside a youngster can we assume he's now worth what....10m, 15m .

VvD's valuation looks way out the park compared to what seems a really good record of defensive purchases by Southampton and well done to them.

The valuation seems as knee jerky as some of the transfers made on FPL

I like Virgil but 25m seems reasonable, 30m tops imo.

Most players tend to go for way more than their worth these days. If they didn't, there'd be no need to sell.

I think Southampton would've accepted around 45 myself, but the interest in him caused a bidding war raising it to 60, which only Liverpool will pay.

That first paragraph seems to apply almost solely to EPL, of course the likes of Real will pay top dollar when it really matters but for across the board inflated fees, England has it nailed.

I'm intrigued moreso as an experiment than anything else.

Every Southampton defender to leave Southampton hasn't been as good. Even guys like Fonte who really appeared so solid. I wonder if VVD will break that trend. Maybe the inflated price will be a good thing in some ways, keep pressure on instead of taking the foot off the pedal.

        Yeah,
I like Virgil as I say, was immense at Celtic (Rangers fan, don't forget) but he is error prone in my book but this could be the making of him - interesting that he hasn't really broke into the worst Dutch since ....never!

Impressive list of defenders, you really have to applaud Southampton, Les Reid and others in what they manage to achieve down there.

As do I but I agree his errors seem to be entirely glossed over (like Lovren before he signed for Pool). He's more composed than Lovren imo, but I've often had this debate with my brother (a massive VVD fan). It is interesting, though I suppose that can come down to many external factors.

Aye, I've been pondering this for a while. Came to the realisation that every season these players had some form of strong CDM in front of them (Schneiderlin, Wanyama, Romeu) but many of the clubs they wind up at don't. Pool desperately need one imo, United only now realising Herrera can do that job having benched Schneiderlin for seasons, West Ham (Fonte) and Boro (Chambers) also didn't have anyone of those players' calibre in DM. Food for thought.

            Good point, also forgot chambers.

Saw a short series of discussions on Sky a year a couple of years ago in which Les Reid was involved in one episode. I was really impressed and mostly by the fact they keep it so simple with signings and youngsters.
Without going into too deeply I loved his comment about why would Southampton take on a youngster only to entrust his development to someone else i.e loan him out. He made quite clear he was having a pop at Chelsea in particular.

The shocking turn of events will be that VVD completely flops, but Yoshida breaks the trend and turns out to be better than he seemed at Southampton and leads Crystal Palace to an unexpected PL title.

Not sure why the surprise at this Van Dijk transfer or fee tbh.. the only thing surprising me is Liverpool finally showing a bit of ambition in the market and pushing the boat out on transfer fees and wages.. being back in the CL that is exactly what they need to be doing because the other top clubs will and have been doing so for years

I would agree it is a great bit of business by Southampton but also for Liverpool a player that can much improve their woeful defence.. he alone can't make them a formidable back line but it's a start.. far from the complete defender but again he's 25 and CB's generally hit their peak between 27-32..

The money is relative to the insane amounts in the game right now.. recent figures showed Sunderland who finished bottom and were relegated received 90 odd million in broadcast and commercial payments during last season and there was over 2 billion paid in total to all clubs.. madness really but will only increase as will transfer fees and wages

Obviously i hope he flops hard but that's besides the point 🙂

You can't win Nidgey. Usually we go for budget players and people take the mick. Now we're being very ambitious and we're being questioned. All the papers said he'll be joining City suddenly now know how much he's going to cost. It's 44m with 8m in add ons

Maybe this happens, but this is one of those many cases where there are a lot of conflicting reports and rumours and the bottom line is that the one certainly true thing about it is that Pepe has not signed anywhere yet.

Let's start from the most recent, it is the guy himself, Pepe, claiming he has contract offers from all of Inter, PSG, and some English clubs:

        http://www.cope.es/audios/partidazo-cope/pepe-partidazo-cope-hay-cosas-zidane-que-todavia-entiendo-club-defendido-con-tema-hacienda_388711

Marca made this claim about PSG and Inter already yesterday.

        http://www.marca.com/futbol/liga-francesa/2017/06/05/593547c4468aeb5a7e8b45af.html.

PSG came into the picture apparently because Al-Khelaifi met with Jorge Mendes.

        http://www.marca.com/futbol/real-madrid/2017/06/05/59351a27e2704e274f8b467b.html

But Mendes represents literally dozens of players that could potentially interest PSG, and interestingly, PSG denied the rumour completely just yesterday. Their representative said that they have not contacted Pepe or his representatives and in fact don't even work on this transfer.

        http://www.leparisien.fr/sports/football/psg/mercato-pepe-premiere-recrue-du-psg-05-06-2017-7019316.php

Moreover, this rumour was launched by Spanish radio station La Cadena Ser who claimed that Pepe has all but signed for PSG:

        http://cadenaser.com/programa/2017/05/09/el_larguero/1494319696_596617.html

But PSG denied that time as well having been in any contact with Pepe, or even interested in him.

        http://www.leparisien.fr/sports/football/psg/psg-le-portugais-pepe-ne-viendra-pas-09-05-2017-6932994.php

Who knows, maybe they want to keep it secret. Either they lie, or Pepe lies, or Pepe has been lied to. But at least PSG representatives have been consistent in their story, whereas the contract rumours are contradictory.

What is most certainly true, is the first thing Pepe says: he has not signed contract with anybody. He is a free agent, can still go anywhere. The rest can as well be Mendes and Pepe looking for more and better offers, because month ago it was done deal with PSG, yesterday it was already almost done deal with Inter, but PSG intervening with contract offer at the Cardiff final and Pepe choosing PSG, and now there are both and Pepe going to neither.

And then there are nuances. Pepe's story is that Real Madrid didn't want to offer 2 years deal to a player of his age. I'm not sure they offered him 1 year either, because there was a moment he said they have no offer of prolongation from Real. But anyway, it's 2-year contract that he wants, and even if Pepe's claim about contract offer was true, I doubt the Marca claim about 2 years contracts, at least in the case of PSG.

That sounds certainly like agent selling his player, telling everybody that other big clubs are offering those 2 years to him. But it's unlikely other big CL clubs were offering a 34-year-old dropout of another CL club 2 years, and PSG policies about their experienced players (Motta resigned for 1 year and converted into a coach) and struggle to keep their younger core (Kimpembe and Marquinhos notably) make it particularly unlikely. In fact, I think it is extremely unlikely that Pepe and Mendes had a 2 year contract offer by PSG on table, and would not have signed it already. I suspect they would have taken Inter's 2 year deal too, but since Inter is not a CL club now, and are struggling, it does make more sense for Inter to shop fringe players of CL clubs, and more sense for Pepe to look for something better. So, I give that a little more credibility, although I doubt it too, and I doubt Pepe will get anything better than 2 years at Inter, if that.

A Liverpool fan's letter to Southampton:
      Dear Southampton,
I don't know how many players have been transferred to Anfield from your player store of a football club. But let me take this opportunity to thank you for all your emphasis on scouting, development and selling of players.
There have been some good signings like Mane, Lallana, Clyne and hopefully Van Dijk.
And some others which cannot be classified like Lovren, Crouch etc. And not to forget the famous Rickie Lambs.
All I can say is that it's a 100m well spent. And always remember, nobody, Nobody can take away the credit and the sell on fees away from you.
Here's hoping for another starting 11 to be bought from your club.

      Cheers.

Lol yeah, it's surely plain that to have a long term strategy in place why not develop your own players and invest your youth systems!?

Still boggles the mind that only JT has gotten through Chelsea, who just seem to use their youth systems as a stockpile for promising youngsters who, without fail these days, get sold off.

The need for instant success is so prevalent and patience is low!

      1. Camp No No
        • 10 Years

Yup, Chelsea use the youth system to make money. They buy a lot of promising youngsters, loan them away, and when they succeed, they usually sell them with big money.

This should be made illegal. FIFPro's plan would stop this by restricting the squad size, removing transfer fees and prohibiting loaning.

Brexit could have an effect we can't predict yet I guess.

The PL may have to try even harder to appeal to foreign fans, for instance by playing marquee fixtures in the Far East, in order to keep increasing revenue.

I can see the amount of signings slowing down once the likes of Mourihno, Pep & Klopp get the players they want, new managers tend to invest then slow down. I think the sums being spent will keep going up tho

Dont think the problem will be competing with Real. The problem will be Kylian himself. Dont think he is going to want to leave CL football to prove himself in England. Its either go play with his two idols, Zizou and Ronnie or stay one more year in Monaco where he is already fit in.

I can't see him staying if other players are leaving. Didier deschamps has waded in telling him to be sure he goes to a club that will help him develop. Not sure if that goes for or against Arsenal.

        1. CloudSky
          • 7 Years

Monaco will help him develop though. Their scout system is great, they already brought in young starlet Tielemans in stead of BSilva and are looking throughout the talent in France to fix the holes that will be made with Mendy gone.

Arsenal are also looking at Lacazette and Wenger plays with only one striker. Just cant see him going to Arsenal, such a step back from Ligue 1 champions and CL semifinalists.

Arsenal summer already has the sound of every other Arsenal summer. Wenger promises big signings. Arsenal has money. They are linked with every possible striker. The better the more, and now the most recent is - Mbappé!

Wenger has been luring Mbappé, touts him as a 2019 Ballon d'Or candidate and then "news" broke that Arsenal filed in a bid for the young phenomenon! Yes, he is rumoured to have bid €87M for Mbappé! €87M, when Real Madrid allegedly has had two €100M+ bids rejected and just made a third €135M bid. €135M. €87M. Can you see the difference?

I don't know, these rumours can also all be false, although it makes sense that there are bids for Mbappé. But the point is, this looks so like Arsenal every summer. Looking for the very best assets available only, but refusing to "overpay" for them, they miss out on all of them. While they make their timid chase for their no. 1 choices, the other top players who could be their 2nd choices, move to other clubs. And Arsenal ends up paying £30M for somebody who gives Giroud rest in domestic cup games.

Ok, yeah, seems to be what they're preparing now, and good for them, but the £87M is what they allegedly _did_ bid for him, and that was rejected. And that after Real had, again allegedly, already bid more.

And it's not as if there was any reason why Arsenal had advantage over Real.
