As the biggest name to arrive in the Premier League last summer, there was signicant hype surrounding new Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic among Fantasy Football communities.

He went on to enjoy a successful season at Old Trafford, scoring 28 goals in all competitions as Jose Mourinho’s side won both the Capital One Cup and the UEFA Europa League.

And while Spurs’ Harry Kane and Everton’s Romelu Lukaku were the stand-out options among the forwards across the Fantasy games, Ibrahimovic sees off Chelsea’s Diego Costa to claim the final spot in our Team of the Season.

The Statistics

Handed an initial price tag of 11.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Ibrahimovic was selected by 1,270,022 managers heading into Gameweek 1.

That figure reflected the fact the forward polarised opinion during pre-season, but a goal and maximum bonus points in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth quickly silenced any doubters.

He then registered a brace in the 2-0 victory against Southampton, with his 13-point haul forcing many who had gone without the Swede up to that point to alter their plans.

By Gameweek 5, Ibrahimovic was owned by over 2,400,000 FPL managers, with his price reaching a season-high of 11.9.

That early-season form was to prove a false dawn though, with the United striker blanking in five consecutive matches between Gameweeks 6 and 10.

By the time Mourinho’s men travelled to Swansea City in Gameweek 11, Ibrahimovic’s price had dropped to 11.1 and he’d lost over 1,100,000 owners along the way.

But that trip to south Wales proved to be a turning point, with Ibrahimovic scoring twice in a 3-1 victory.

Further goals followed against West Ham United and Everton before the former Paris St-Germain forward embarked on his best run of form between Gameweeks 16 and 18.

Over those three matches, he produced four goals, three assists and eight bonus to total 38 points in FPL.

Ibrahimovic’s price returned to its peak of 11.7, but he would never reach those heights again despite remaining a consistent point scorer – he registered a goal or an assist in five of his next seven starts.

His season was dramatically derailed during the 1-1 draw against Bournemouth in Gameweek 27.

He returned a Gameweek score of -1 after missing a penalty and picking up a yellow card, and he was then handed a retrospective three-match ban for clashing with Cherries defender Tyrone Mings.

Ibrahimovic did return from suspension to score twice and register an assist in his next two appearances, but his season was cruelly brought to a premature end after suffering cruciate knee ligament damage against Anderlecht in the Europa League.

He concluded the FPL season with 163 points, ranking him sixth among forwards, although he averaged 5.8 points per match, which was bettered only by Kane (7.5), Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus (6.7) and Lukaku (6.0).

Despite only playing 28 matches, Ibrahimovic placed second among FPL forwards for shots with 115, averaging a chance every 21.2 minutes.

He also shone as a creator, with no other forward managing more key passes than his 47, seven of which led to assists.

The Prospects

It was confirmed last Friday that United have released Ibrahimovic following the end of his one-year deal, deciding against taking up the option of a second year.

His departure leaves only Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney as the senior strikers currently on the books at Old Trafford.

After a brilliant performance in the 2-0 win over Chelsea and some important goals in United’s Europa League success, Rashford currently looks the primary option heading into next season, although a new signing in this position is surely inevitable.

Used mainly out wide during the first half of the season, Rashford enough flashes of brilliance in Ibrahimovic’s absence but would again seem destined to surrender the central striker role to a new signing.

Martial did play some matches in the lone striker role following Ibrahimovic’s season-ending injury, but it remains to be seen whether his long-term future will be as a centre forward or back out wide.

Rooney, meanwhile, has fallen down the pecking order, with his future at the club looking uncertain.

The skipper has been linked with a move away with just one year left on his current deal, although his wage demands could mean he sees out the rest of his contract as a bit-part player.

Mourinho is certain to bring in at least one big-name forward, with a deal to acquire Real Madrid hitman Alvaro Morata to the club reportedly in progress.

There are suggestions that personal terms have already been agreed with the player, leaving only a fee to be negotiated between the two clubs. The player’s agent has also confirmed that an “important offer” has been made to Madrid by United with reports today stating that a deal is close.

The Spanish international produced 15 goals and five assists in 26 league outings last season, despite being a bit-part player, and has plenty of experience having also enjoyed a two-year spell at Juventus.

United have also been heavily linked with a move for Torino striker Andrea Belotti, with some speculation suggesting Mourinho is keen to sign both players.

The 23-year-old Italian registered a hugely impressive 26 goals and eight assists in 35 league appearances last season in a side that was only able to finish ninth in Serie A.

Both players underlying statistics from 2016/17 are pretty similar, with Belotti averaging a shot every 23.6 minutes, slightly superior to Morata (24.3).

They both fell slightly short of Ibrahimovic’s mark of a chance every 21.2 minutes, but in Belotti’s case, he would certainly be part of a side creating a lot more chances than he is used to at Torino, while an increase in starts for Morata should also boost his numbers.

Fantasy managers will be taking a keen eye on United’s activity and pre-season matches to try and establish the pecking order among the United forwards, but while Morata and Belotti are both talented individuals and boast huge potential, they’ll do well to adapt to English football as quickly as Ibrahimovic did.

Even with those doubts, today’s publication of the 2017/18 fixtures gave us reason to increase our interest in United’s assets. Jose Mourinho’s side avoid all of last season’s top six over the opening six Gameweeks and arguably have the smoothest opening of any of the likely title contenders.

A big loss for United and PL, even in his mid 30's he was still class and hopefully will continue to be when fit and playing again (wherever that is)

I'm gonna say the circus around him was bigger than his actual input. He missed so many chances, if United have someone more clinical they would have finished in a more respectable position in the league.

but would somebody more clinical have got as many chances as him ? He's always had the ability to find space for himself despite his lack of pace.

I'v watched him a handful of times both at International level and in the CL and been very impressed.. will need to be patient as more often than not young defenders need time to adjust not all adapt like Bailly straight away but will only go from strength to strength under Mourinho

Less than a month before FPL launches for next season, but its nearly that time again

    Foster (4.5) 4.0

    6.0 T.Smith (4.5) Olsson (4.5) Nyom (4.5) 4.0

    Alli (10) Salah (8.0)* Pedro (8.0) Sane (8.0) Kachunga (5.5)

    Kane (13) Lukaku/Jesus (10.5) 4.5

*If he signs, should be significantly cheaper than Mane, so makes sense. Better finisher, guaranteed starter aswell should he join

    Now to relax

      No United? Very good fixtures.

Southampton's fixtures also look too good to ignore although I'm not sure about any of their attacking options.

Utd's fixtures being slightly overrated IMO, includes Saints Everton Swansea all good teams whi gave Utd problems this season

They have an annoying habit of 5.0-ing 1 defender from a promoted team, probably will be T Smith this season but Id still be tempted to get him even at 5

Is anyone considering going WITHOUT a Chelsea defender for the start of the season?

    Chelsea's first 5 fixtures:

    Burnley (H)
    Spurs (A)
    Everton (H)
    Leicester (A)
    Arsenal (H)

I think that's a tough start for Chelsea.
Apart from Burnley (H) I can't see many other Chelsea clean sheets from their first 5 fixtures. Thoughts?

Not sure the latter stages of last season have any impact whatsoever on the start of this coming season mate.. i think they will strengthen and keeping clean sheets against Burnley Everton Arsenal at home and Leicester away isn't beyond the realms of possibility.. I agree United and potentially Spurs are a stronger bet but that wasn't the question

Yeah fair point...However I think I will start with a Utd def as my only Premium defender & then get 4 cheap (under £5m) rotating defenders from maybe SOU/BUR/WBA/SWA....then spend more funds up top.
Then will get a Chelsea def on my early wildcard in GW4/5.

I am not saying Chelsea will keep 4 clean sheets but I am hesitant to rely that heavily on form at the end of last season . Teams with new managers like Leicester need to be reevaluated but saying Chelsea's defence will be lack luster because they struggled at the end of last season sounds wrong .

Dawson from West Brom for 5m is looking tempting for the initial fixtures. Good chance of 2-3 clean sheets and a goal in the first 5 games.

Didn't perform as well as the likes of McAuley or Brunt in terms of attack. We can expect McAuley to be 5.0. Yes, Dawson did score 4 goals, but he didn't end up too well in the defender rankings, did he? Plus they did poorly for clean sheets, which is the main thing.

They've played plenty of matches at Wembley two days in a row, for example Football League playoff matches. The pitch should be able to take it.

I understand that completely but the matter of the fact is that Utd DFs apart from Lindelof and maybe Bailly will be around the same price bracket as Spurs, Chelsea wingbacks, apart from alonso. Those teams plah with 3 atb which turns to 5 when defending so they have a higher CS potential than Utd and a higher attacking potential than Valencia for example as they are WBs and more licence to attack

Definitely being hyped in an attacking sense though. Morata? Seriously?

Pogba could be a decent option this season though, depending on formation/position etc. He'll be cheaper and we'll have a striker who can hopefully convert the chances he creates. He was also unlucky not to score more last season just like KDB. Add to that the attractive fixtures and you can certainly make a case to consider him.

            3. KingNidge
              • 10 Years
              9 years, 6 days ago

I'll have a punt on Morata myself and think Pogba if given more freedom has the potential to seriously improve on last season goals assists and points wise for the same price.. wouldn't be in a rush to hype them up that's just my opinion however.. This really is nothing new and most of the hype comes from those that spend most of the season slating them from an attacking perspective and once they see a few nice fixtures they are on them like a tramp on chips.. same every year.. i can understand the defensive potential but from an attacking perspective it's risky right now

    2. Davido989
      • 15 Years

Good defensive picks but won't be touching their attackers. Even Bournemouth scored more than them last season.

      1. Pep

Exactly this. Spurs City Chelsea Pool much more appealing in an attacking sense

        1. Somalion
          • 16 Years
          9 years, 6 days ago

But if it's obvious to all of us do we not think it's the one area United will be looking to improve? We're just assuming United's attacking will stay the exact same as last season, which is a bit bizarre.

          1. Davido989
            • 15 Years
            9 years, 6 days ago

United have depth and quality in attack but the style of play restricts them from scoring loads. Of course they'll strengthen, but they're also losing 17 goals from Ibrahimovic. Morata may do well, but it's going to take more than just signing a quality player to fix the attack. These players need more freedom and license to attack. Until then, City Pool Spurs Che attackers are better options in my opinion.

            1. Somalion
              • 16 Years
              9 years, 6 days ago

But Ibra's conversion rates were woeful.

Don't get me wrong, loved the big man and it was a great experience seeing him score goals in the PL, but he had a conversion rate of 14.2% which really wasn't impressive whatsoever. As an example, Morata's conversion last season in La Liga was 27%. Not saying that would continue should he sign, but given the number of chances Ibra squandered it's not unreasonable to think Morata can better him assuming he's the head honcho.

Then you have the likes of Pogba who, if they bring in a DM as expected, will be allowed to wander a bit more. He created a shedload of chances last season, but the mids and forwards didn't put them away. Not to mention how often he hit the bar. Not fully defending him, he missed some sitters as well and took on silly shots, but again one of the key points behind bringing in a new DM is to loosen his restrictions.

Another point is simply that some of the mids weren't up to scratch last season. Mkhitaryan for example had a poor one, in the league at least, and I feel it wasn't so much about the style as it was about him simply not having his head in it. Yeah it would help should United attack more, but I think the big aim for this season is to increase the level of defensive quality so they can reduce the amount of people having to stay back/get back quickly and give more license on the attack.

I'm not arguing that there are other very valid choices floating around, but there's a lot of potential for United's attack to drastically improve. Price wise that means more bargains, because realistically players like Alli or Kane will command very big prices but will their output increase again over last season? Tough to see that.

        Absolutely this.

If a nailed on Utd defender is £5m and Chelsea/Spurs defenders are all starting at £6.5 up to £7m then you'd have to seriously consider a Utd defender.

Until we know the prices it's all just a guessing game.
