Transfer speculation and a feast of new Members Area statistics took centre-stage in this week’s community discussions, which also considered Fantasy Premier League’s bonus point allocation and the power of shirt sales.

Our members’ table constructors are already getting their teeth into the new information available to them, while our community article and tournament sections assess the latest league positions and transfer targets in the Fantasy competitions taking place over the summer.

The Community Articles

Norwegian top-flight game Eliterserien Fantasy continues this weekend when Gameweek 14’s action gets underway. Niemi dropped by to consider some key transfer targets and players to avoid for this next set of fixtures.

Elsewhere, Giggs Boson was back to offer his analysis of last season’s clean sheets. This excellent article builds on his Hot Topic a year ago and provides a breakdown of where the shut-outs were owned. If you’re a member, it also provides you with a ready-made set of team ratings to enable you to create Giggs Boson’s definitive Fixture Ticker for clean sheets.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Cristiano Ronaldo’s rumoured reunion with Manchester United was among the most eye-catching transfer rumours this week. However, opinion was mixed on whether his mooted return – given he was an essential asset for much of his time in the English top flight – would help or hinder Fantasy managers.

Should he return, his transfer fee, as well as his Fantasy price, is likely to range between the eye-popping and the astronomical. But, pondered ZoumasBloomers, are the transfer fees commanded by football’s ‘galacticos’ justified considering the marketing revenue they can generate?

ZoumasBloomers was back during the week to canvass your views on overrated players, a category that few would place the Portuguese forward in given his stellar career so far.

A more water tight transfer involved the move that brought former Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah from Fiorentina to Liverpool. Now that the deal is done, Fantasy managers will face an even trickier task in selecting the best option among their midfield, according to our discussion.

Liverpool players such as Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho were among a raft of midfielders who offered excellent value in the 8m to 8.5m price bracket last season. However, with a hike in value likely for the Brazilian pair, we asked for your views on who next season’s best options will be in this price category.

The issue of price rises was also discussed by Shawcus, who is intrigued to know how Fantasy price-setters decide players’ value.

After his Golden Boot winning campaign, Harry Kane is among those likely to succumb to inflation in 2016/17. But the community has mixed feelings about starting next season with the Spurs striker, according to White Lightning’s hot topic.

An increase in value is also expected for Manchester City midfielder Leroy Sane. But will rotation threaten to curtail interest in the German and the rest of Pep Guardiola’s troops? Kuntheman – Silva has been examining the extent to which the Spaniard likes to freshen up his starting XI. This was a theme also addressed by Ludo later in the week.

According to Witty Pun, focusing on midfielders in a 3-5-2 formation could be key to success next term, with his research on third strikers revealing that the days of 3-4-3 may be over. There was further argument against investing in budget strikers, even if they have a good pre-season, in Wild Rovers canvassing of the best and worst summer bandwagons of all time.

Elsewhere, we revealed a raft of new statistics added to the Members Area armoury, including figures on creating big chances and being tackled – both important factors in calculating FPL bonus points. This prompted us to ask whether FPL has got it right when allocating extra points by penalising players who are targeted by tough tacklers

Among defenders, Harry Maguire could prove a lucrative option next term following his move from Hull City to Leicester City, thinks Mark. However, bonus points may be hard to come by for the towering centre-back after he secured extra points on just two occasions last season, in spite of some resolute rearguard displays and ranking second for shots inside the box among defenders.

Pairing up cheap defenders and goalkeepers was once again a hot topic, with Brighton’s capture of Australian keeper Mat Ryan from Valencia sparking a discussion later in the week on budget match-ups at the back.

Finally, Friday delivered a stickied comment that demands your attention. Following the appointment of Mauricio Pellegrino as Southampton manager, Foozeball offered their in-depth analysis of the Argentinian manager. Given Southampton’s fixtures, Pellegrino’s tactics and team selection look set to be key to our early Fantasy fortunes.

To view all our discussions, please visit our Hot Topics page. We are also still keen to hear from you about how this can be further developed.

The Members Tables

Mr Emre-Can-Pie has been examining wing-backs and attack minded full-backs who completed at least 100 successful passes in the final third of the pitch last season.

To add to the aforementioned Hot Topic on players who get frequently tackled, I’ve created a table to showcase the attackers who struggle to keep hold of the ball and may find themselves missing out on FPL bonus points as a result.

Sticking with the Members Area’s latest statistics, the newly-added ‘big chances created’ figure is the focus of another table I’ve made.

Meanwhile, Giggs Boson returned to scout midfielders who could be due a goal next season after registering a high number of close range efforts but rarely finding the net in 2016/17.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Congratulations to all those taking part in the Fantasy Euro Under 21 FFScout league, which was ranked first in the competition’s league of leagues during the week.

In the Norwegian Eliterserien Fantasy game, Colmans Mustard remains top of the community’s main league, while Dutch Warrors continues to lead the H2H competition.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-Ups, please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head-to-head competition at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Inspired by Giggs Boson’s article, today’s Hot Topic is based on clean sheet prospects this season.

Who do we feel will be the breakout team for shut-outs next term?

Do we see Spurs, Chelsea and Man United dominate this?

I’m expecting both Liverpool and Man City to improve in this area and I think Everton could also push into the 15/16 clean sheet bracket now with Schneiderlin and Gana having the pre-season to build their understanding.

What do we reckon on the promoted sides?

Rafa likes his teams to prioritise defence and use the counter so I believe that Newcastle will be my favoured option. Brighton’s home form will be worth monitoring based on their Championship stats.

Yep, you have to think that without Europa League they should benefit. Pellegrino looks set to be a key man in our season from the off with their fixtures.

Absolutely, I'm certainly having one Saints defender if not two including Forster, who's always served me well in FPL.

Pellegrino seems like a Benitez disciple, after playing under him at Valencia and working as a coach with him at Liverpool and Inter. A real 4-2-3-1 man, with an emphasis on keeping things tight at the back, and that's clear to see with his impressive defensive record at Alaves last season. Bodes well for fantasy prospects at Southampton with those opening fixtures.

I think the top team this season would be Arsenal. In 2015-16 they were a good source of clean sheets. They somehow slipped off the radar last year.
I also expect Everton, Chelsea and Spurs to do well in the area. Liverpool and Manchester City will be the same unless they change some players.
Out of the promoted sides, I think Newcastle should do well. Not very confident about Brighton and Huddersfield.

The Arsenal option has been tricky in recent seasons. If they do fare well, who is our target? I can't trust Koscielny again after last season's DGW disaster.

Ballerina and Kolasnic would be great options if Arsene plays the 3 man defence.

Reports strongly suggesting that Ox could be off to Liverpool. Don't see him staying at Arsenal. If he does, then wait and watch situation.

For that to happen I think Wenger will need to hold onto Sanchez and make a marquee signing. Can't see him letting Ox go until there's movement elsewhere. Could be a good thing for Arsenal fans, if true. Pretty sideways for Ox.

Arsenal have too many players. If all of them happen to be fit at once, I think Wenger will struggle to rotate them. And Ox is also in the last year of his contract. As you say, let's see what happens.

I understand, but he is a good player. So if he's going, Wenger will want to replace him with a better player (since he is a starter, or on the verge of starting most of the season) which must be good news for Arsenal fans.

Agree with Arsenal being up there. They'll probably slip up and lose a couple 8-2, but they should let fewer slip in against the lower teams. Potentially solid from the start, since they could be looking to start where they left off by getting the basics right, and letting the attack come naturally to them. At least that's how I saw it at the end of last season. I just hope Kolasinac isn't so cheap that everyone gets him.

Also my guess would be that Liverpool get a couple more CSs at least, given that their depth should give them added confidence, possesion, etc. Have they signed a left back yet? Otherwise Milner could be a don at anything less than 7.0 (presuming Salah isn't a pen taker).

They haven't been strong for a couple of seasons. We have to think that he'll address this and I think Dawson could be moved to CB. However, Leicester are trying to prise Evans away so there could be upheaval.

Fancy West Ham to keep a decent amount of home cleanies. Looking at GB's article they kept about 8 which was great considering how poor they were. I'll be getting one of them for rotation purposes.

      A few questions.

      1) Is just 4 points a bit stingy for a clean sheet? I had gotten very used to the 5 you get in TFF.

      2) There seems to be so much choice in defence ... Moses, Milner, Kompany, Valencia, PVA, Cedric, Mawson, a nailed Spurs wing back. How on earth do I whittle it down? And should the template be broken to invest a lot more in defence?

      3) I was also thinking why doesn't anyone on here EVER mention Cahill. 6 goals last season and Chelsea have a big set piece threat (highlighted in yesterday's members article).

      1. Je suis le chat
        • 12 Years

I wish they gave 1 point for a cleanies after 45 min and 3 more if the team makes it to 90 mind. Cahill and friends will be pricey so I'll avoid.

      2. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 17 days ago

        1. I think 4 is generous enough. It's random enough that a whole 4 points is assigned for such unpredicatable events. A last minute goal can mean a hige swing. On top of that you are rewarded in BPS. Seems quite silly. Whereas scoring a goal requires a positive act, which is rewarded as a single event. Defending rewards single players with the team's effort plus chance, and barely rewards individual effort.

        2. No idea. Defenders are crowding the top of my mental wishlist. You have to wait for prices to help you decide based on value.

        3. Cahill is on that mental wishlist, but Alonso and Moses are ahead of him. Depends on prices as always, though

I think the bigger Wembley pitch will hinder Spurs' defence. I'm only considering Kate for GW1.

I'm expecting both Manc clubs to tighten up at the back.

With Southampton having an ex-defender for new manager, that could help.

Apart from the obvious, such as Man United prospects being a stand-out, I actually quite fancy Brighton as a rotation option under Chris Hughton.

They get off to a tough start, with MCI on the opening day, but after that, their home fixtures in the first half of the season are WBA/NEW/EVE/SOT/STO/CPL/LIV/BUR/WAT.

Here's Hughton's teams' defensive record at home in each of his full seasons as manager, with his side's league ranking by both Goals Conceded and Clean Sheets in home games only:

      16/17 - Brighton (Championship) - 23 Games, 14 Goals Conceded (=1st), 12 Clean Sheets (=1st)
      15/16 - Brighton (Championship) - 23 Games, 18 Goals Conceded (6th), 10 Clean Sheets (=5th)
      13/14 - Norwich (Premier League) - 19 Games*, 18 Goals Conceded (=6th), 8 Clean Sheets (=4th)
      12/13 - Norwich (Premier League) - 19 Games, 20 Goals Conceded (8th), 8 Clean Sheets (=3rd)
      09/10 - Newcastle (Championship) - 23 Games, 13 Goals Conceded (=2nd), 12 Clean Sheets (=3rd)

      * Hughton was sacked with two home games to go in 13/14, in which Norwich conceded 5 goals against ARS/LIV, so his personal record was 13 Goals Conceded and 8 Clean Sheets in 17 home games for a team that was relegated.

It's no big deal really 🙂

After missing a lot of last season I mainly did the research so I knew what was a good fixture! I was looking at the fixtures and realised I had no idea! There is really no need to acknowledge it, I probably should have probably factored in goals conceded too. It could be better.

Bellerin ended last season with a 7.33 pts/game ave. in his last 3 matches. If his prce was reduced to 6.0 (likely) and if Wenger sets up with a 3 man defence and Bellerin on the right of a 5 man midfield (but FPL still counts him as a defender) how likely would you be to start with him in August?

Double ups in attack are fine as long as they are from Chelsea/Liverpool/City/Spurs

Double ups in defence are too expensive as I'd only consider them from Chelsea

      I would say forget it.

I have found rotation early on in the season is frustrating.

Just pick a strong eleven and a weak bench then alter the strong eleven depending on bandwagons

Rotation is more of a thing to do after around gameweek 6 when things settle down a bit more and there is form and knowledge of team structures and who the bargains are.

Why is there NO TRANSPARENCY with player prices at FPL?

It's such an important part of the game and it's decided with all the secrecy of a South American dictatorship.

The suits at FPL and FFS need to put out the cigars and shine a little light on their cosy little gentleman's club.

Eh? Its a game remember 🙂 And its their game, they're entitled to run it how they like, including the player prices. Sometimes i agree with player pricing and sometimes i don't - for the most part they aren't far wrong though so they're obviously doing something right.

Personally i wish they would mix stuff up with the price rises more to stop people from being able to use price prediction sites. I certainly don't think they owe us anything on the pricing of players though.

You are right Virgin it would be nice to see the logic they apply to arrive at a players price.

I think the £.5m value increments are a bit rigid and if a player could be valued at in between values it might be fairer.

I can think of many players that are not here nor there under the £.5m system and i would like to see players starting prices reflect that e.g. a player could start at 4.8 say.
