Our series of pre-season members’ articles continues with a look at Crystal Palace.

We kick off our analysis by assessing their team displays against the 2015/16 campaign, before scanning their primary goal threats and creators.

We’ll also take time to compare their displays under both Alan Pardew and Sam Allardyce, with one eye on what the now managerless Eagles can offer in 2017/18.

After battling to beat the drop for most of the season, the Palace ended the last campaign in fourteenth position on 41 points – more or less identical to 2015/16, where they ended in fifteenth spot with 42 points.

In terms of a cutting edge, there was a definite improvement – a total of 39 goals in 2015/16 was better than just two other teams, but this jumped to 50 last time out, the ninth most impressive scoring record in the top-flight.

But when assessing the two seasons, there was little difference in the underlying numbers.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

With Matic set to come back to United, are you guys more interested in Pogba? Hopefully priced at 8.0, seems to me a decent shout.

I'm more interested, but I want to see how Mourinho are planning to use Mkhi, Mata, Rashford and Martial before I jump on him. I don't think Rashford and Martial are great strikers for 4-3-3, while Mkhi and Mata are probably better in 4-2-3-1.

Being defensively solid is amazing for winning trophies, particularly during knock stages in cups. Having the ability to nullify world class players is a vital quality.

But you can be defensively solid and still show attacking flair. Mourinho's last Premier League winning side still scored a good number of goals and were exciting going forward.

Think its really valuable in leagues as well as cups tbh. Been reading The Number Game and whilst I don't agree with it all, statistically it's better to have a strong defense than attack in the top 4 leagues.
I feel Utd may be been on the wrong side of luck season just gone - few of those Ibra chances get converted and they would have been right in the mix

I'm an Arsenal fan and I seriously doubt this is anything other than newspaper fantasy...
However I don't think Champions League is important for any club to sign any player anymore - if they put enough money on the table in terms of wages players join...

Haha - zero chance for Aguero at Arsenal, but that is more because if he was available I'm sure teams like Bayern, Madrid, Barca, Juve etc would all be interested, all pay him a good wage and are better clubs 🙂
But it is why Arsenal have a chance of signing a player like Lacazette and how Liverpool could sign Mane last year.

Yeah, I'm not sure how some people categorically state Champions League qualification can make or break a deal. Surely, one year out is hardly a big deal for players. It's funnier when it comes from United fans, who conveniently forget that they weren't in the Champions League when they signed Pogba and Ibra. It's a consideration for players, but good managers can easily convince the better players that them coming over will be the missing piece to them getting back into the Champions League. As you say, it's wages and their agents demands that dictate everything. All this other talk is us wanting to believe what we want to happen.

    #WelcomeDeBoer

    Interesting press conference.

Reading up you really cant doubt what he did for Ajax, having not won the Eredivisie for seven years, he becomes manager and wins it 4 years on the spin on the back of making the most of the academy.

His Inter record was disappointing, but appointment was definitely bad timing for a first job out of his own league, with the difficult and chaotic internal political situation/takeover/interference going on with Inter at the time. Hopefully its a lesson/experienced well learned for Frank and he can make a few signings of his choice and maybe unearth some more gems from our academy, the next Zaha/Victor Moses/Nathaniel Clyne maybe.

He did well in the CL too tbh. Was reading about it. A big appointment for you guys. Best of luck. Hope Palace produce some good fantasy assets.

Yeah I watched that conference, it was very interesting. I love Parish's Kaizen approach, he seems like a good owner. Palace are an established Premier League team now, based in London (big plus), with strong attacking players, but they can't keep relying on beating the big teams going forward. A more balanced approach is necessary long term.

I like the appointment, I got the feeling we can expect them to improve defensively but will still exploit the pace and quality they have up front as much when the opportunities arise.

It would be brilliant if he brought through some (cheap as FPL assets) kids from Palace's academy - that's de Boer's main strength. However, the Pl is unforgiving, especially for a new manager with a bottom-half table club. Hopefully if they hit mid-table safety with time to spare we'll see some youngsters emerge.

          • 14 Years

I would argue that Ajax's academy is one of the best in the world, and De Boer was just playing to their strengths.

Whilst I do think De Boar will improve the academy, we may not see any Palace youth players get frequent starts in the Premier League, just yet. They still have to be a certain standard.

            • 13 Years
            9 years, 15 days ago

Yeah, it's more likely he'll use his knowledge to bring non-British kids into the academy and nurture them over the long term. But he's ex-Barce and Ajax - he's steeped in academy culture.

It can be kinda insulting to be modded sometimes and that might brown some guys off but you have look at from the mods point of view.

this, think we (chelsea) are getting top dollar for a player who was very good in Jose's first season back but hasnt lived up to expectations since then and limits the team in certain aspects. Kante is obvs the number 1 DM in the league. Clearly Conte thinks he can get a better replacement to go alongside him in games where we need the steel.

Bakayoko looked great when I watched Monaco earlier last season, and he is only 22 so loads of room for improvement.

Also has to be good news for Fabregas gametime too if Matic goes

    3. Piggs Boson
      • 14 Years
      9 years, 15 days ago

Matic doesn't really suit a two-man midfield imo. His best role is anchor, and therefore is best suited to a 433 style where he can enable other creative central midfielders to push forwards. He's not a bad passer himself, but that's not where his world class talents are 😉

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 14 Years
        9 years, 15 days ago

On a side note, does anyone else view 433 and 4231 and pretty much the same formation? During the attacking phase of a 433, the most forward CM pushes into the hole anyway, sometimes two CMs.

        1. Jazz!
          • 11 Years

Not really. A 4-2-3-1 (Mourinho style one) is a 4-4-1-1 when defending. 2 banks of 4, the #10 and striker alone up top not really tracking back.

4-3-3 is a 4-5-1 when defending generally with the wingers back. And when attacking, the #8s do push up but not into the 'hole' imo.

Exactly. So with Herrera a bit ahead of him and Pogba further up the field, United should have a very strong midfield.

Herrera was priced very low last season. If he plays regularly and pushes up a bit, he could be a great differential.

This is why I think a lot of people aren't speculating about having him in their team. Some people thinks he could be 4.5 or 5.0 player, but we are talking about a player that legitimately had 7 goals and 19-23 assists in 2. Bundesliga a few years ago.

there's something far more comfortable about having 1 or 2 points on the bench than that type of player that scores nothing when you play him, and as soon as you bench him gets his 15 point haul - had one gameweek last season where all my benched players, got over 13 points each, including the goalie, how i hated them !

what will happen with Walcott this season, at the beginning of last season he seemed determined and new attitude, then gradually disappeared - potentially a great midfield option for fpl at a good price, but can't seem to secure game time, we need more midfield goal scoring options, where's Clint Dempsey when you need him lol

he's had 10 years of 'having potential' and never quite done it, at least not for more than 3 or 4 games at a time, his improved attitude at the beginning of last season (something he discussed himself in interviews) fizzled out seemingly, or Wenger just lost faith in him

Nope but I always try to convince myself.

Seen the West Ham chatter - don't buy it myself. The fee he demands is a big risk given that he's not had long enough as a spell as a striker and he is injury prone. I'd have thought the Hammers could get a proven target and would much prefer to take that option.

Walcott is also fairly high on wages (120k/week last i heard), you need him to be fit and firing (or at least putting in a shift) every week - reckon it'll be more cameo appearances at Arsenal again this season, teasing with a few goals/assists, then getting dropped, trolling many of us

I don't think anyone from the bigger clubs will want to join the Hammers unless they have no choice. They had such a bad season. Every win was pretty much a hang on for dear life win, with the exception of that Spurs win, and some of their losses were so so bad.

Yeah he got hamstring surgery I believe end of season but should be fit for GW1. And yeah Antonio or Lanzini could be great assets to have next season. Surely to god West ham can improve on last season poor performance.

Doesn't seem to fit in Wenger's new formation. Needs to look elsewhere for more gametime. Would help us with the wage structure too.

I've kept faith with him for years, but he just doesn't seem to have developed as a player (maybe not his fault, we've had quite a lot of players like that, and people like Adams have said Wenger gives little coaching in terms of individual player development, that it was up to other players to pass on advice), maybe it's best all round if he does move on as it doesn't look like he'll ever quite be the finished product with us, a shame though, he can be a game changer on those rare days

I've always viewed him as a great attacking player that has struggled to fit into Wenger's tactics. I think the modern game requires wingers who are at least "competent" defensively and central strikers with at least some decent strength. He doesn't seem to fit into either category.

Now that Wenger is playing 3 at the back how can he become a regular? It seems unlikely he'll ever play WB. Maybe as a shadow striker if Alexis leaves?

i think he could do ok in a counter-attacking team, but playing possession football trying to break through congested defenses doesn't work for him, but still a useful player in certain situations - he never did get that run as a striker that he always wanted, i guess Wenger wasn't convinced that he could do the same with him as he did with Henry for the winger to striker conversion

Years ago I used to play an FPL game where along with your squad you bought a manager! I wish we had that. As an ex-Football Manager nut I'm more interested in the managers than the players, and this season the PL shaping up to be packed with stellar quality. Look:

    Arsenal Arsene Wenger
    Bournemouth Eddie Howe
Brighton & Hove Albion Chris Hughton
    Burnley Sean Dyche
    Chelsea Antonio Conte
    Crystal Palace Frank de Boer
    Everton Ronald Koeman
    Huddersfield Town David Wagner
    Leicester City Craig Shakespeare
    Liverpool Jurgen Klopp
    Manchester City Pep Guardiola
    Manchester United Jose Mourinho
    Newcastle United Rafael Benitez
    Southampton Mauricio Pellegrino
    Stoke City Mark Hughes
    Swansea City Paul Clement
    Tottenham Hotspur Mauricio Pochettino
    Watford Marco Silva
    West Bromwich Albion Tony Pulis
    West Ham United Slaven Bilic

Can't help thinking a few such as Hughton and Shakespeare don't half look out of their depth!

I wonder how it would work if you introduced a manager as part of our squads.

points for a win and clean sheet

minus points for being sent from the stands or losing a lead maybe?

Well it could be something like W3, D1, L0 points and for prices say Costa or Mourinho costs you 4m, Koeman 3m, Pulis 1m and Hughton for free!

So Man Utd are close to signing Matic.
What do you make of it?
Think hes overpriced for someone who will be 29 soon and not very good. Fabinho would have been a better signing imo.

Not a united fan, but think he's a great player. Good passer, Good controller of play. Excellent at breaking up, style of play easily has four or more years left in him at top.
Not most glamorous, but frees up pogba to attack and fits nicely into squad. Proven winner, was possibly player of season last time mou won league w Chelsea.

Shrewd business I think, forget price....
pool fan myself n think he'd hugely aid Utd

One of the best DMs about imo *ducks*. He's a proven champion that has about 5 years left at this level. Terrific signing imo, and just what United need.

Fabinho is still young, and whilst he shows great promise, he's not at Matic's level yet.

Little (or no) news about Rooney. Don't know if there is any interest for him at all. He will need to take a serious pay cut if he wants to play in Europe. Where do you think he'll end up? MLS?

He sadly needs to leave Utd or else he may damage his Utd Legacy. If he decides to stay for the 300k a week while sitting on the bench well then things could get ugly next season.

I don't know. But I am looking at BUR/WBA for my goalkeepers. It is not pure Home/away.

      Rotation Pairs:
      /38 ;36;34
      ARS/TOT; HUD
      BOU || SOU; SWA
      BRI/HUD; NEW; TOT
      BUR/CHE;
      CHE/BUR;
      CPL/STO; MCI; EVE
      EVE/LIV; CPL
      HUD/BRI; ARS; LEI
      LEI/NEW; HUD
      LIV/EVE; STO
      MCI/MUN; CPL
      MUN/MCI; STO
      NEW/LEI; BRI
      SOU || BOU; WBA
      STO/CPL; LIV; MUN
      SWA/WBA; WAT; BOU
      TOT/ARS; BRI
      WAT/WHM; SWA
      WBA/SWA; WHM; SOU
      WHM || WAT;WBA

9.5m for Keepers is a bit too much moolah for me. I plan to cover (try) Heaton's big hauls by having Mee as a cheap rotating def for BUR home fixtures.

        Hi Doosra, how's things?

Thanks for that list. Everton/CPalace at least until Wk 19 looks quite interesting depending who is No. 1 GK and prices. The exception is Wk 2.

I'm also looking at WBA/BRI as they rotate well until Wk 13. As you said not strictly home/away but fixture-wise they do.

Yup based off what Peter Blake did over at Mathematically Safe, I used the bottom 11 teams for this year. Why 11? Because my 10 didn't jive with the 10 from the bookies, so I expanded it to 11. I put together every 3 team combination from these teams:

      LEI
      WBA
      STO
      SWA
      CPL
      BUR
      WAT
      NEW
      BRI
      HUD
      BOU

The best combination I came up with was BOU/SWA/WAT, This rotation plays 25 home fixtures, 8 away fixtures and none of the top clubs. This covers the first 33 weeks, as we move into DGW usually from that point on.

The second best rotating defense I came up with was BUR/STO/WBA. They feature 24 times at home and 9 times on the road, again not playing any of the big clubs.

Three other honorable mentions, all who miss playing the top clubs in the EPL:

      HUD/STO/WBA (23 home /10 away/0 no cover)
      BRI/STO/WBA (20 home / 13 away / 0 no cover)
      CPL/HUD/WAT (20 home / 13 away / 0 no cover)

Of course these rotations are contingent on any given team having a £4.5m defender available who starts and gets minutes. I have a full spreadsheet I can share and will post an article on my site shortly.

Does anybody ever think of going with 2x4.0 m defenders whether they play or not doesn't matter ,that would improve the players in 3 remaining defensive positions or splash money in attack, because in the end we will mostly be playing 3 defenders.

I'm prepared to go for one and just simply put him last on my bench forget he exists but two would be taking the piss imo

        Yeah I agree. My planned defense price structure for GW1 will prob be 6.0 - 5.0 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.0.

how about downgrading 4.5 to 4.0 ,it could mean difference in the like of Evans which could be your 3rd defender to Dawson/McAuley(5.0) for an example or upgrading 6.0m(like Koscielny) to 6.5( Bellerin)

Suppose that makes sense but its very risky. You will be screwed if one of your defenders gets unexpectedly dropped/injured/sick.This happens a lot I have noticed -i.e. your players get injured in warm-up or last training session after a manager's press conference. Then you will be down a player for the GW.

if that happens, I could use my transfer . Your strategy is tested and followed.I am just looking for some unorthodox strategy this year to make the game interesting.

Yeah true but this could wreck your transfer plans i.e. may need to take an unnecessary hit as you already planned to bring someone else in.But yeah your idea has definitely got me thinking anyway. Might do your way if stuck for funds.

                    Yeah maybe. If I go your way my def in GW1 would be Valencia - Cedric - PVA/Dawson - 4.0 - 4.0.
So I would have to play them 3 every week. Ideally would like another 4.5 to rotate PVA/Dawson with.
But I can see where your coming from with this idea.

That is fine in theory but you will need that back up on your bench from time to time so you will need at least one of them to be a starter.

I started with three of them last season when I planned to play an early WC - GW1 Kingsley got 8 points and Amat 5 points, that was as good as it got unfortunately, but it wasn't a terrible idea. If you want to hold onto your WC much longer than GW3/4 then it's probably not a good idea.

long term I'd want at least two playing players on my bench, it will save wasted transfers in the future and you should always be able to field 11, it also allows for rotation pairs which can be handy.

true, I need 3 defenders to play each week but I could have 5 playing defenders too for future games. I think having this luxury is great ,what I wish is more money on the field , and we all hate benched points too .

Nope, plan on rotating my third defender, all of whom I am hoping to be at £4.5.

I'm looking at going the other way completely.

I am looking at going with a 4.5m third striker as the dead wood and playing 3-5-3, 4-4-2, 5-3-2 or even 5-4-1 depending on fixture for third striker.

I was tinkering with the squad builder earlier and a set up with:

      4.5 4.5 gk,

      6, 6, 6, 5.0, 4.5 def

      9.5, 8.0, 8.0, 7.5, 6.5 mid

      12, 7.5, 4.5 fwd line

Looks a decent option with the fixtures and the scoring potential of the wing backs in the current fashionable tactics.

I thought about upgrading my iphone 5s recently but i was not sold on the s8 or iphone 7

The ear pods and the lack of a jack in the iphone put me off. I would lost those ear pods in no time and there are very expensive to replace.

In fairness the s8 looked fantastic but i am a big fan of the bookbook case by twelve south and they do not make that case for the s8. I know that is a stupid reason but i said to myself i would wait and see what iphone8 offers up when it is released before i upgrade.

There are potentially some good mid-priced strikers next season, and lack of quality in the budget options. What is the MOST you would pay for these players in your FPL team next season? And who would tempt you?

    Benteke
    Llorente
    Vardy
    Defoe (bou)
    Inneacho (whm)
    Bony (swa)
    Rooney (eve)

      Tekkers- 7
      Llorente- 7
      Vardy- 8
      Defoe- 7.5
      Kelechi- 7.5
      Bony-7
      Rooney- 4

0.5 would be a suitable price for him

Would not pay more than 8.0 for any of them.

For me best options from these are
      - Defoe
      - Llorente

      Some doubts with
      - Benteke
      -Iheanacho
      - Vardy ( Mainly his price)

      Rooney and Bony
would rather delete my team than get them tbh
