Fantasy Premier League have revealed the forthcoming release of a new draft game for the 2017/18 season.

After much rumour and suggestion, the news arrived via an update to the official app and offered some early information on the game type.

First things first, it’s important to stress that the new FPL draft game will be free to play and run alongside the “traditional” game as an addition to our season.

The game will allow for the formation of leagues with between 2-16 members. Within those leagues, teams will consist of the usual 15-man squads but, of course, the squads will be unique. So only one team in each league can own Harry Kane.

Like the traditional FPL game, leagues can run in the classic form or in the head-to-head format. We can set up leagues or put ourselves in public leagues with “strangers”. If you really want to, you can enter up to ten leagues over the season.

Details on how the draft will work are yet to be released but it is stated that no budget will be in place. Therefore the draft will take place without player prices, operating a similar “snake” draft system that we’ve seen in other games such as Dugout FC, with players “taking it in turns” to select players until a squad is complete.

The game will use the exact same scoring rules as FPL, with bonus points applying.

This new FPL game follows two years on from Ultimate Fantasy Premier League – a version that was closed for the 2016/17 season. Many of us miss that incarnation and will welcome this new development as an addition to our seasons.

Certainly for those who can recall auction nights in the original Fantasy League, FPL Draft could represent a blissful return to those halcyon days where we battled to get Alan Shearer in our squads.

We will bring you more information on FPL Draft in the weeks to come, including our take on the strategies involved.

The classic FPL game remains on course for a release in the week of July 10.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Never played draft but this sounds fun and a few friends of mine seem interested, so will give it a try... can anyone explain me though how will it most likely work? I assume we draft a team before GW1, but then what? How do we transfer players to ensure we don't buy the same one? No way we stick with the original squad for 38 GWs, so are there some rounds of drafts (like every 3-4 GW we start from the scratch) or how does it usually work? Cheers.

You can make decent offers to other managers, say Aguero-Benteke for their Coutinho-Kane etc etc...

Not sure how FPL draft will work though, how will they manage free transfers, new picks etc

Just wait until the rules come out.

There are lots of variations of the way draft games work and we don't really know how this will be launched.

They will have their own rules for transfers, wait and watch.

It will probably work something like this:

      1. Everyone picks players in a set order (snake system). Once a player is picked, you cannot pick the same player
      2. Everyone then has a squad to set their team each week (not sure how big the squad will be)
      3. Every week you can offer trades to other players for their players (e.g. Kane Lukaku)
      4. You can also 'drop' one of your players and pick up a player who hasn't been selected. But there is a set order from which the players can pick people in order to avoid two people wanting to select the same person. So some weeks you'll have first choice, some weeks you might have last choice. Essentially this works in a rotational system whereby once you've had first pick, next week you'll drop to the bottom of the pack and have to wait til everyone else has picked.

United deliberately leaking a bit of gossip on Lukaku to scaremonger Madrid into accepting their latest offer for Morata. No actual interest in Lukaku.

What I do not understand about draft is this... Won't you, for the most part, just select the most expensive player available, when it is your turn? Hardly rocket science...

    1. Andy_Social
      • 13 Years
      8 years, 5 months ago

Not if you think a cheaper player will perform better.

      Price does not equal points.

There are obviously going to be a likely premium lot but, for example (on previous years prices), I think I would have much preferred buying Gylfi Sigurdsson or Riyad Mahrez over Jesus Navas and James Milner, etc.

      1. mranonymous
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 5 months ago

Sure... But are you really going to punt on a cheaper unproven player when expensive proven players are available.... I think it's pretty straight forward... When it's your turn, pick the most expensive player (fpl obviously deem those as likely to score more points)

        1. Andy_Social
          • 13 Years
          8 years, 5 months ago

Only straight forward when you narrow your options.

What about a cheaper proven player (Sigurdsson) over expensive unproven players (Salah) are available?

I actually think Salah & Siggy will only be .5 or so apart. I also think they'll probably score around the same points as their price indicates....

Let's say for the sake of argument Chelsea buy Mbappe and FPL price him more expensive than Kane. Who would you choose?

Obviously a little common sense comes into it... But for the most part we'll be robots picking the obvious

Like I say, the first 10+ picks are relatively straight forward. I've run, and won multiple times, a draft game for the last five years and I can say that simply picking the most expensive player in the game is a) not going to work b) really god damn boring.

          1. mranonymous
            • 11 Years
            8 years, 5 months ago

Part b is really what I am highlighting... That's my point... If First 10+ picks of 15 are predictable then it looks to be a little zzzzz

The first 10 are predictable in as to who they are, but the order of those 10 won't be determined. Man City fan X may prefer Sergio Aguero to Chelsea fan Y preferring Eden Hazard to unbiased Spurs fan Z liking Harry Kane.

I don't think it's any kind of problem. I've seen all sorts of errant picks along the years.

This is a large factor. Positions also play a big role - premium defenders don't get chosen for a while, even though they can be the most stable draft picks.

The big picks from big clubs usually go before other proven performers though, so someone like Defoe may be ignored for Salah etc. by many

      1. mranonymous

Position priority might make it a little more interesting... still, we will all mostly prioritize attack & just snap up the most attacking, most expensive assets

I think you are correct to a degree. Managers might not be willing to gamble on a punt if there is a proven player around. The punts will be introduced to your squad through free agency.

Just 6 points separated 9th from 17th. I continue to see Watford tossed around as being relegated but feel they have more to offer this coming season with Silva at the helm. Although that said, I haven't been impressed with who's been brought in so far. Will Hughes doesn't strike fear into opponents. I seem them being mid (lower) table but surviving the drop. I feel Burnley and Swansea will have a tough going this season.

First of all, I want to say that I welcome the new addition of a draft game with open arms. My group of friends and family have been wanting to play for years, but we haven't really found a good platform or have had the time to set it up ourselves. So thank you.

A question concerning the draft order: Does the draft order have to be random or can you set the order manually? The one time we actually successfully set up a draft league, we based the draft order on last year's results (or you could base it in a quiz, another tourney etc.).

    Cheers

Most rules are TBD at this venture. The finer details will come out in the wash.

This is a good introduction, and as big advocate for draft gaming I'm glad to see FPL will bring it to light, but this is why for this season at the very least I'll be running my core league of 8 in my home-brew because the rules can be exactly as I/we want and have fine-tuned them to be.

This coming NFL season will represent year 37 in which I have acted as league administrator and member of an fantasy American (NFL) football league. Of the 10 teams involved, 8 managers have been involved all 37 years. That makes the draw of the league inviting and fun, playing with your mates. So while I have extensive experience in this style of game, like many of you I have many questions that haven't been answered...yet. I am willing to give it a chance but I don't have much interest in playing for a few reason.

Like that of it's NFL counterpart, preparation is key to a successful draft. If you enter a draft unprepared, you will have a difficult time building a competitive squad. Luck plays a part, but you have no control over that aspect. Over the years, that preparation time has decreased with many fantasy sites providing the statistics and information pertinent to your draft day. In essence, doing all the footwork for you. Still, the final decisions rests with you, the manager.

In a fantasy American football (draft) league, running backs (RB) are the hot commodity, have been for numerous years because of the big drop off in "quality" players. If you don't get a top RB, it can make it tougher to be successful. Much like drafting Harry Kane or Kun Aguero, the quality drops off based on total points. It would also have you looking at a different position, midfield, to draft a higher prospect, the likes of Eden Hazard of Alexis Sanchez.

The EPL has 20 teams in which to draw from, while the NFL sports 32 teams. The EPL usually has a 25-man squad, while the NFL uses a 53-man squad. The difference being of that 53-man squad, only 16-20 will be offensive players (not taking into account the league I admin doesn't play defending players). So for the EPL, you have approximately 500 players to select from, while the NFL will give you approximately 640. This will make drafting a squad more challenging, especially considering you need to keep budget in mind.

Speaking of budget, I have never played in an NFL league that uses a budget. Along with the snake style of drafting will challenge the most seasoned fantasy manager. Not only do you need to take position into consideration but more attention will need to be paid to budget remaining and positions needed. You could have an option to draft a midfielder you didn't expect to be around, but based on remaining budget and positions yet unfilled you might have to pass.

It was only within the last 15 years or so we introduced a waiver wire/free agency pool of players. This is the pool of un-selected players managers select new players from. Unfortunately, in my experience many winners in my league win not because of their draft, but because of their activity on on the waiver wire or dipping into free agency. This comes at a monetary cost, which was used to dissuade owners from using it. Unfortunately wasn't the case and many managers tally quite a large bill over the year, but in the end, the winning payoff is all that matters.

This aspect of NFL fantasy has ruined the fantasy game for me. Too many managers I play with build their team AFTER the draft using free agency, especially when it comes to back ups and bench players. We have seen in many seasons players who gain form and are snatched up quickly off the free agency wire.

League size if very important, in fantasy NFL, 10 teams seems to be the most recognized league size, but I have played with as few as 6 and as many as 14. Obviously, the more managers, the more challenging the draft with more players being drafted. I can only guess a league size of 10 is going to be difficult to manager. The free agency pool will be active, due to this free agency pool trading is usually nil.

Just some random thoughts from an old time fantasy football junkie, who much prefers the traditional game, but will possibly give it a go when the rules are posted.

zero RB strategy for the win! then just pick up the backups from waivers when needed, I guess I'm one of those that build their team AFTER the draft...my team last year was outrageous using the zero RB strategy. Don't think that is a strategy which can be applied to FPL draft, basically finding a position that frequently gets injured and where the back-ups are just as good...

Waiver wire rules are important, if it's just first come first served that will ruin it.

Agreed. I went with a 2-QB strategy and ended up with nothing at RB, which hurt. Knowing I could draft a mid-level QB in the middle rounds, my team was doomed from the start. Drafting back ups are more important in NFL fantasy than in fantasy football.

Wondering if there's an argument for staring with Jesus & Lukaku over Kane & Lukaku. Just for first couple weeks.

I'll definitely look at the possibility of avoiding the top priced strikers to see what the money gets me elsewhere.

Were none of ye considering Lukaku when it looked like he would be at Chelsea? Seem to only hear talk of him being in people squads now that he's heading towards Old Trafford.. either all of those people are United fans or you don't believe he would do as well for Chelsea

Conte not afraid and has quality for false 9 on a regular basis

I think comparing him to Costa, it's hard to convince yourself he's going to do better, but comparing him to Rashford and Ibra is different, since United created tons of chances that Ibra missed, and he's much younger.

That doesn't necessarily mean he'll do better at United than Chelsea, but it might help explain the increased enthusiasm for him at United. That and the fact it's actually happening.

I think Lukaku is a better fit at United. Chelsea also still have Costa in their squad, whereas Man Utd don't have a main striker. The starting fixtures are more favorable to United.
