On Tuesday, newly promoted Newcastle United completed their second summer signing with the capture of French defender Florian Lejeune from Spanish side Eibar for an undisclosed fee, understood to be around £8.7 million.

The 26-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal and, speaking to the club’s official website, Magpies boss Rafa Benitez gave an insight into some of the qualities Lejeune will bring to his side:

“He is a player that has done very well this year in Spain. I have known about him for a while, since he began playing for Villarreal. He has progressed a lot as a player in the last few years and I know he will give us something different at the back – he is good with both feet, he’s big and he’s good in the air also. If he settles well into English football then I am sure he will be a success and will give us a lot of competition in this area.â€

The History

After beginning his career with French amateur side Agde, Lejeune joined Ligue 2 outfit Istres in 2009 following a successful trial.

He played 43 matches over the next two seasons, registering three assists and one goal, converting to a centre-back having arrived at the club as a defensive midfielder.

In July 2011, Lejeune completed a € 1 million move to Villarreal, but he struggled to establish himself in the first-team squad, making just five appearances over the next three seasons.

Lejeune joined French side Brest on loan during the 2013/14 campaign, playing 13 matches in all competitions, before signing for Spanish second-tier club Girona FC in the summer of 2014.

He established himself in the starting XI and scored four goals in 38 league appearances, which led to Manchester City signing the defender in August 2015.

But Lejeune was immediately loaned back to Girona and totalled three goals and two assists from 38 league outings.

Last summer, he joined La Liga outfit Eibar on a four-year deal and enjoyed an impressive campaign, tallying one goal and an assist in 34 league appearances.

Lejeune made seven appearances for France U20s, scoring once, but he has yet to earn a call-up for the senior side.

The Prospects

While Newcastle’s outlay on Lejeune is significant, Benitez’s comments suggest the Frenchman may not automatically command a spot in the starting XI.

The Spaniard installed centre-back Jamaal Lascelles as club captain last season, with the impressive Ciaran Clark his regular partner at the heart of the defence. Chancel Mbemba is also in the mix, albeit on the periphery.

With Benitez such an advocate of a 4-2-3-1 formation, it would seem unlikely that Lejeune has arrived with the move to a three-man backline in mind.

Lejeune has only played regular first-team football over the past few seasons, but he was reportedly the subject of interest from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur earlier this year, suggesting that he has the pedigree to push for consistent starts in a back four.

There is further compelling evidence to suggest that this is the case.

As that report mentions, Lejeune is comfortable in possession, and standing at 6ft 3in tall, he’s also very strong in the air.

In fact, in terms of La Liga form, he is a dominant figure.

While Lejeune ranked seventh for aerial duels won with 115, his success rate of 76.2% was the best in Spain’s top flight.

Digging further, the case for Lejeune as an FPL bonus point darling grows stronger.

His aerial prowess enabled him to top the ranks for clearances in La Liga with 191, and that figure ensured that, for CBI (clearances, blocks and interceptions), he was placed second overall.

Only Germán Pezzella of Real Betis boasted stronger numbers (282 vs 281).

In terms of minutes per CBI, Lejeune, with 10.49, lags behind the current Newcastle centre-back pairing – Clark (7.62) and Lascelles (8.47).

However, it’s difficult, if not impossible to translate statistics between these two levels. Given his standing in La Liga, we should anticipate that Lejeune will be a force in the Premier League for CBI. As a result, he could even emerge as the most likely Newcastle man to benefit from the FPL Bonus Points System.

There is also evidence that Lejeune carries a goal threat.

Again, it’s difficult to compared La Liga with the Championship, but there is some encouragement to be found in this department. Lejeune averages a shot every 106.11 minutes, bettering both Clark (131.91) and Lascelles (153.13).

The Frenchman registered 12 of his 28 shots (39%) from outside the area. While he could take the occasional direct free-kick and long-range effort for the Magpies, those attempts perhaps indicate that we should not overplay a potential for goals just yet. However, his aerial prowess will surely be a key threat on the end of Matt Ritchie deliveries.

As a newly promoted side, most of Newcastle’s defensive starters are expected to be priced at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Lejeune looks likely to come in at that value. But with Lascelles appearing the most likely starter and right-back DeAndre Yedlin another option after producing five assists in 21 starts last term, the new signing will need to be assured of a berth in Benitez’s XI before we can commit.

Analysing the opening fixtures (TOT, hud, WHM, swa, STO, bha), it seems that Magpies defenders will be in demand as budget options for our five-man backlines.

Benitez’s side actually kept more clean sheets (11) in away matches than at home (eight) last season, so those trips to Huddersfield Town, Swansea City and Brighton and Hove Albion appear reasonable match-ups.

In Lejeune, Newcastle look to have signed a dominant centre-back who should boast the quality to command a regular starting spot providing he settles in the north east. Once in the line-up, his statistics suggest that he could, and should, lead the challenge for bonus points if clean sheets arrive.

But with Lascelles perhaps a more assured pick for now, Fantasy managers will hope pre-season provides clearer indications as to Benitez’s thinking come the season kick-off.

Walcott won't go if they're selling Giroud. He offers a similar "run in behind" option if Lacazette or Welbeck were to be injured.

He might force a move away though.

you dont think Pep will get top 4 with that squad - cant agree with that at all

I dont see Arsenal improving even with Lacazette and there will be players leaving imo. I have doubts about Utd too unless they bring in some quality. Spurs have 38 away games.

City to win the league next season

Incredible attacking players, but a few of them don't defend and the defence gets put under a lot of pressure.

If Kompany stays fit all season, top 4 for sure. But that seems unlikely...

They're still looking at defensive players, and Gundogan will, at some point be back, another season under Guardiola and we should see more defending from the front, I'm not disagreeing with you (I think Guardiola has never done enough to work on the defensive aspect of his teams) but I just don't see how City can not make top 4, unless something seriously wrong happens.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Promoted teams straight back down?

Which of the three promoted teams do you think are favourites to go back down and why?

Based on transfer activity, Huddersfield has been busiest-but have they bought quality?
Based on last season, and a lack of forward recruits will Brighton struggle to score enough goals to stay up
And what of Newcastle - as a Fantasy prospect they could be blighted by rotation. But will they be able to remain in the Premier League?

Brighton are gone in my opinion. Huddersfield have signed some quality, although I expect them to struggle. Newcastle have a good solid side and good home support. Brighton haven't improved where they need to.

currently I think you are right. Brighton don't have the depth or the firepower needed. If they stay up it may well be with the lowest goal tally ever.

They may do well at first with kind fixtures - but as the season wears on they will be found wanting.

        Brighton are toast.
I rate Wagner but I don't think Huddersfield have the quality even with new signings.
Newcastle - depends on Ashley pulling his finger out. I fear he won't and Benitez will walk, damning Toon to a relegation struggle. Whether they survive or not may depend on if anyone from Watford, Burnley and West Brom are worse.

I'm confident Newcastle will stay up, look at their 15/16 form under him and now they have a squad mostly built by him.
Not too sure about Brighton, they'll definitely be around the drop zone and will need a new striker for sure.
Huddersfield look favourites to go down no matter who they sign, they need to make sure they don't buy too many players and end up like QPR did

Brighton looks like they will go down if they don't make any notable moves soon
Newcastle have an excellent manager in Rafa and should be able to stay up.
Huddersfield is a good story and they too have a solid manager in David Wagner, but as much as I would love for them to survive, I worry they just might not have enough quality in the end.
I think Burnley will go down this season, and I get the feeling West Ham and Swansea City (especially if Siggy leaves) could struggle a lot too

To be fair to Brighton, Burnley made very few changes to their Championship squad when they came up and they've done very well. However, I don't really believe Brighton will emulate them.

I still say Huddersfield. Despite the recruitment drive, their record in the Championship suggested they had so much ground to make up, plus new signings have to gel, tactics formed around them. I just don't see it.

Brighton will also struggle. Newcastle will be safe for me. Rafa will find a way and he has enough talent to work some magic. Signings to come too - Lejeune looks an excellent acquisition and that's in an area where they already look fairly strong.

He made 174 Recoveries, one every 16.8 minutes.

I don't have data for Lascelles and Clark, sadly.

Compared to BPS darlings, that's reasonable but not outstanding. Bailly is at 12 minutes, Koscielny is 13.5, Cook at 14.9.

But it's stronger than a cast of others, including Van Dijk, Williams and Mawson.

          1. Blimey. That is really very decent indeed!!!

Difficult to dismiss Huddersfield and Brighton before the season. Many sides such as Bradford and Wigan have been condemned before they started and support subsequently survived. That said, I'd think at least one will return from whence they came.

I wonder about Burnley now they've lost Keane and teams have more experience of going to Turf Moor. If they can't start winning away, then Dyche may have that smugness taken away a tad.

I think our (Huddersfield) acqusitions have been very good so far. And like last season. we've been making them early, to have a full pre season to bed in. This was absolutely crucial then, and will be now.

Nothing new for us to be predicted to struggle, hey, we had pundits tipping us for 24th in the Championship last season. Don't think we're going to be a pushover this season, we may well end up going down, but it also wouldn't surprise me if Wagner pulled another rabbit out of his hat.

Huddersfield for sure. They just don't look strong enough and don't seem to be getting the quality in.

Brighton, Watford, West Brom, Stoke and Newcastle will be fighting for safety. I would say Brighton and Watford for the plunge, but Pulis needs to sign a Fletcher replacement and top CB pronto.

If Swansea lose Siggy, I can see them struggling. But I'd be shocked if they sell.

Invariably it revolves around how long it is before their style of play gets found out. Couple that with depth of squad and if either is exposed too early in the season they will almost certainly go down. Assuming this happens Brighton and Huddersfield are very likely to go down and Newcastle may well follow no matter how optimistic people are about Rafa etc.

The waiting is killing me and Sanchez/Özil sagas are still not over. I'd love to ask you if he's high on your watchlist but it's pointless before we see the prices and performances in pre-season. I've been waiting 3 years to see us signing Laca so I'm really tempted to start with him since day one 😳

Do you have any superstitions while playing FPL?

I have seen people not having players from their own supporting team.If possible I place the players according to their position in the team i.e right sided players to the right of the FPL team and so on.

Let's hear some of the best and interesting superstitions.

Obviously prices aren't out yet so I'm just speculating, but I'm trying to think of a way to fit in Kane, Laca and Jesus without weakening the rest of my team too much, and so far I've come up with this:

      Foster (4.5) / Bench (4)

      Man Utd Defender (5.5) / PvA (5) / Cedric (5) / A. Smith (4.5) / Bench (4)

      Salah (8.5) / Pogba (8) / Sane (8) / Redmond (6) / Bench (4.5)

      Kane (12.5) / Jesus (10) / Lacazette (10)

Of Kane is 12.5 I will be disappointed, and I think I'd feel I have to start with him. I hope he's 13+ so we have a more real choice

It's good, but if Kane is 0.5 or 1m more, what will you trim?

        1. stat
          9 years, 6 days ago

Good question - I'd probably have to downgrade Redmond and take a punt on a 5m / 5.5m midfielder - but Redmond could be a good buy because of his first 5 fixtures (SWA, WHU, hud, WAT, cpa) so that would be a shame.

Maybe I could downgrade the Man Utd defender for a 4.5m / 5m that rotates well with PvA, Cedric and Adam Smith.

          1. Andy_Social
            • 13 Years
            9 years, 6 days ago

My feeling is that you have no margin here. Downgrading Redmond leaves you with nothing viable. You'd have to have a weak rotating defence with players who may not be regular starters (Adam Smith my lose his place to Ake). I've been saying elsewhere that having 3 top-notch strikers leaves you with either an imbalanced squad or no margin for error. I prefer some wiggle room!

            1. stat
              9 years, 6 days ago

Good point - maybe Adam Smith will be pushed to the wing and play OOP though, who knows. I'll probably end up going with 2 premium strikers and 1 mid-priced (like Benteke, Defoe or Giroud if he moves).

I made a similar draft the other day - I like it. I'll probably go 433 and invest that Redmond money in a decent defender. Bench might be a bit turd though with two 4.5 mids on it..

I'm on the same page too. Very tempting but I reckon the strike force could cost an extra 1.5m. You could bring in WP instead of Redmond .. likely to be 0.5 cheaper and might be a better bet anyway.

        Sane, Salah, Pogba, 4.5, 4.5
        Lacazette, Jesus/Morata, Defoe

So many combinations, it's impossible to say without prices. My watchlist for strikers is sizable...

Aguero: He asked Pep for assurances about his role, and he's still at City. So I expect him to start more. He was incredible last season, and I think he'll be top scorer GW1.
      Kane: Say no more.
Defoe: Bournemouth's attack is as good as many of the top teams statistically, and with Defoe leading the line and on pens, I can see him being excellent value if around 7.5/8/0
Benteke: Very strong stats, good fixtures, quite like De Boer.
Lacazette: Incredible player, in a strong attack. But he likes to dribble deep and link up play, so maybe an Ars overlapping mid or two (Alexis, Ozil, Ramsey) may be shrewder...
Lukaku: 25 goals last season, whether at Chelsea or United you'd expect him to reach that total again with ease. If at United he may get pens, unlike at Chelsea. Depending on price, he could well be an important fantasy player

      Maybes
Giroud: If at Everton, could be a great option
Llorente: If Siggy stays and his price is reasonable, he could be another great value player
Vardy: If he gets a huge price cut, he could be a good buy. Looked good last season.

      1. Benteke is the weak link, there. 🙂

That's quite a successful list of strikers. Perhaps blocked shots just indicates they're a shoot-on-sight kind of player, and are actually desirable.

              1. Hmmm. It is ALL the top strikers. Play around with the headers - you will soon get a feel. Keep your eye on goal conversion, the while.

                1. Also, % of Big Chances Missed.

                  1. There, we can now see that Lukaku is/was the most ruthless striker ...

City attack is scary. I honestly don't know. All I know is that Aguero is one of the best strikers in the world, and he can do damage in just 30 mins of gametime. Jesus is very young, and has had injury problems, so I'm cautious with him.

Defoe has to start imo. He's is a perfect professional and has looked after himself his whole career. He looks in the form of his life atm. King can play slightly deeper.

On the net, the time for each pick is pre decided. For example, each player to get say 1 hour for first round draft. Some drafts go on for weeks like this.
Some sites allow you to store a sequence of preferred players as well, so that if you miss your turn, the player next in submitted sequence gets picked automatically if available.

Nah... There is a name for picking players in sequence, cant recall. You can say Merry go round for now

Everyone will be assigned with a number, say you are 1, I'm 2 and there is a 3rd guy.

When drafting starts, you'll pick first, then me and after that 3rd guy. In 2nd round, that 3rd guy will pick first, then me and then you. It continues like that for fixed number of rounds

Yes, an auction, but players generally don't have a price. Nor sure how FPL may do it, but other games I tried, players didnt have a price, only formation restrictions were applied.

A draft is a process used in some countries and sports(in our case fantasy) to allocate certain players to teams (ofc fantasy teams). In a draft, teams (managers) take turns selecting from a pool of eligible players. When a team selects a player, the team receives exclusive rights to sign that player to a contract (fantasy contract), and no other team (manager) in the league may sign the player.

Sourced from Wiki page for Draft (sports). Just inserted relevant fantasy terms in the bracket, rest is verbatim.

I have a few reservations with draft format in the current scoring style of FPL.
Especially if a league is of 10+ players, should be interesting to see how it works, 'IF' it is included

I guess those two games will co-exist, neither has any bearing on the other.
Draft game also requires equally involved team management which can be exhausting in a 9 month season. Most may start out of novelty, depends on how they sustain.
            Lets see..

I'll be interested to see what they do with transfers. The issue I've found with this version of the game on other sites is that this isn't thought about as much as perhaps it should. Completely understand with the method of getting the original teams but with the transfer window still open for the first 3 weeks of the season we'll see a substantial amount of players entering FPL who weren't there for the original draft. By doing first come first served you tend to find the same guys hoover up not only the new players to the league but also the surprise packages that weren't selected at the original draft. I'd personally prefer periodic transfer windows where once again you take turns to make a set number of transfers, i fear it'll be more like the free-for-all that we see elsewhere.

I've played on draftfantasyfootball which uses a waiver system. If you get first pick in draft you will go to the bottom of the list and last picker will be first. If someone above you request a trade on a player you want he will get him and then drops to the bottom of the list again. Waivers are Tuesday and Friday.

Agree. Draft leagues are the standard here in the US, and it results in more time spent for less enjoyment, and even more random results. They seem pathetic compared with FPL, where you know where you stand against the entire world every week. I like the fact that mini-league competition at all levels gets rolled up into the ebb-&-flow of price changes and results, and I don't want it diluted by mini-leagues hiving off into their own mini-universes, divorced from the rest of the community.

    Some Defoe snippets.

    .
On his arm is tattooed ‘Hard Work. Dedication. Success’

Moyes described him as the fittest 34-year-old he has ever seen.

‘You do get more out of yourself if you don't drink. At least when I finish playing I can say to myself, “You know what, I did everything right. I gave myself the best chance”'

‘And I do believe that if you look after yourself - don't drink, eat the right things and rest well - you feel ready for the game at the weekend.
'You feel professional, like you've given yourself the best chance because you've not gone out drinking.’

When eating sea bass in a restaurant he asked for the white wine sauce to be removed. ‘She looked at me and probably thought, "What's wrong with a little bit of white wine? You're meant to be an adult”. But I said, “Please, just tell the chef no, please.”.’

‘Can I catch Thierry Henry on 175? That would be special. Then it’ s Frank Lampard on 177.’

    .
    Unbelievable discipline and drive! 🙂

I think Benitez is trying to turn back the clock and sign Pepe Reina.

      1. Urgh. That would piss me off.

Darlow was number one last season, but it looks like they made a bid for Joe hart, so not sure if his place is secure.

      1. Ooo! Cheers.

When is xG coming to the member's area?

I hear Bournemouth were a tad fortunate with a few of their goals...

I meeting Mat to discuss the approach next week.

It's likely to be an ongoing task developed alongside others over a period of updates. Lots of research to be done on methods.

Would welcome your thoughts on it if it's something you've researched.

        Thanks Mark.

I'm not sure what everything is like under the hood, and I'm not an xG expert, so I'm not sure I can comment.

But I would put the xG-For and xG-Against as a new columns in the goal threat tab for teams, just to start with. It can be more in depth in it's own section later.

Expected Goals. It's a measure of how likely a goal is. It is based on a number of factors. E.g. Position/angle of the shot, defenders in immediate area, type of shot etc...

It's the most accurate stat for predicting future goals. More than SitB or SoT.

          Bookies odds?

Regression analysis using shots on target?

I believe it's more accurate than those, especially the latter. Considering how in-depth the process is, it surely can't be beaten. Bookies set their odds based on how many people make the bet, I think, it's not always representative of the actual probability. But I wouldn't be surprised if bookies use it.

"ExpG stands for Expected Goals. It measures not how many goals a team has scored, but how many goals an average team would have scored with the amount and quality of shots created.

Each goal scoring attempt is assigned a number based on the chance that this attempt produces a goal. Typical parameters to use are shot location and shot type (shot vs header). Some models, including the one I use on 11tegen11, also use assist information to separate through-balls from crosses.

Teams that produce more ExpG than they concede have the best chances of winning football matches."

    BREAKING NEWS

Chelsea and Roma have agreed a deal for central defender Antonio Rudiger.

We understand the fee could rise to around £34million.

This is only my opinion backed up by some articles. Azpi is not too good in the air. Was hearing about the wgta say that Rudiger is a proper CB. Also I think Moses is not so good defensively. Azpi is more of a full back.
Zouma and Christensen could be good backups.

Following on from my previous post around how teams start I also looked at the amount of clean sheets teams get in opening 4 games (again it's been posted on my twitter feed prior to this):-

WBA have done ok for CS, they love a 0-0 but 4 of the 5 clean sheets have been away (out of 12 games played)

Man united like early clean sheets he most. Averaged over 50% with 7 of 12 games containing a clean sheet for them, home and away

Palace have only kept 1 clean sheet in past 3 years in opening 4 games. 0-0 v Burnley in 14/15.

Likewise Stoke city. Only 1 clean sheet, away at Man City.

Southampton had kept 3/4 home clean sheets prior to last season when they conceded in all 4 opening games.

Liverpool?!?!? Who knows what they'll do. 15/16:- 3 of 4, last year none in first 4

Man City kept all 4 clean sheets in 15/16 but none in 16/17.

TL/DR. Avoid palace and stoke defenders. Man united may be best premium option and WBA and Saints still may hold some value after all for clean sheets

IF Shrek goes to Everton, who would consider him as an FPL asset? If Giroud goes too do you think Giroud will play up front with Doughboy in the number 10 role or do you think they will rotate strikers (or something else entirely)?

Everton are looking to be a good little setup for the forthcoming season. Good transfer business so far.

Everton's fixtures are abysmal, so no.

Also if he's listed as a striker, I don't think we'll have a slot free. Too many good options up top this season.
