Marko Arnautovic gets his first minutes for West Ham in a defeat in Germany, while Leicester City’s drab pre-season continues with a goalless encounter at Milton Keynes.

Here are the notes from a low-key Friday.

Werder Bremen 1 West Ham United 0

Marko Arnautovic made his West Ham debut in a narrow loss to a German outfit they will face again today to conclude a two-legged Betway Cup affair.

The summer signing, fit again after a knee injury, played the final 30 minutes against Bremen and showed flashes of attacking threat from his position on the left-hand side of a front three.

Coach Slaven Bilic named a youthful starting XI, with six players aged no more than 21, while all seven of the substitutes he used are expected to start the second leg today.

Another likely to be given pitch-time will be Joe Hart. His rival for the keeper’s jersey, Adrian, played the full 90 minutes on Friday and distinguished himself with a fine double save in the second half.

Club captain Mark Noble lasted just over half an hour of the match before sustaining an ankle injury, while new signing Javier Hernandez played no part at all despite joining up with his new side’s training camp in Germany.

Bilic will hope the Mexican striker gets up to speed quickly as West Ham are currently desperately short of forward options following the sale of Ashley Fletcher, owned by 5.7% of Fantasy Premier League managers, to Middlesbrough.

The coach did, however, give an injury update on key attacking players Andy Carroll and Michail Antonio, who was used as a makeshift striker by the Croatian for some of last season.

“He (Antonio) is ahead of the plan. The plan is for him to miss the first game of the season. Andy is still not able to train with the team. I am frustrated he cannot play, now he is still injured and it is a big loss for us.â€

West Ham XI: Adrian; Burke (Arnautovic, 60), Byram (Zabaleta, 60), Collins (Fonte, 60), Cresswell (Masuaku, 60); Cullen (Fernandes, 60), Holland (Snodgrass, 60), Makasi, Martinez (Ayew, 60), Noble (Obiang, 34), Rice.

MK Dons 0 Leicester City 0

Leicester City continued to underwhelm in front of goal with another toothless pre-season performance.

Having sneaked past Luton 1-0 in midweek, Craig Shakespeare’s men went one worse against MK Dons, although his side was picked with another friendly, at Wolves today, very much in mind.

Shakespeare trialled a 4-3-3 formation at Milton Keynes, welcoming back Demarai Gray and Ben Chilwell from extended breaks after their summer involvement with the England U21 side.

“We played a 4-3-3 with three midfielders. We tried to play with a sitter if you like and play through the centre. Matty James swapped with Vicente [Iborra] at half-time to get his fitness levels up.â€

Summer signing Iborra again impressed in midfield, but fluffed a chance when put through during his spell playing in a more advanced position after the interval.

Gray has been tipped as a potential break-out player this season should Riyad Mahrez, as expected, leave the club, and he and Tom Lawrence played either side of Leonardo Ulloa up front for the Foxes.

Full-back Daniel Amartey was used at centre-half by Shakespeare, who chose to keep another new signing, keeper Eldin Jakupovic, on the bench as he made no substitutions during the match.

An entirely different City squad, including the majority of their more established stars, will head to Molineux to face Wolves this afternoon.

Leicester City XI: Hamer; Johnson, Benalouane, Amartey, Chilwell; Iborra, King, James; Lawrence, Gray, Ulloa.
Subs not used: Jakupovic, Elder, Ndukwu, Musa.

I've gone Jesus as s city fan. Haha. But makes far more sense to go for Lukaku of course. Focal point of everything united will do.

But.. if he blanks. Half the fpl blank. And I can't see united scoring 4 or 5 every game in current configuration. I can see city doing that though.

Risky of course. But could pay off.

I completely agree with you, said that I do have Lukaku because I'm 2 scared of that big ownership and I don't see a better alternative, my 2nd big striker is Jesus, 3rd is a bench fodder.

My biggest problem with Lukaku is captaincy, I feel like he might be what Costa was for a good part of last season, a very reliable scorer of 1 goal per game, but rarely anything more than that.
Maybe I'm very wrong but I just don't see MU scoring lots of goals all from a sudden. Time will tell.

I have a question to those members that have a solid understanding of how the pricing algorithm works.

I'm aware that the price fluctuates based on transfers in and out and it is limited to 0.1 per day and 0.3 per GW. However, what I'm looking to learn is do the fluctuations take into account the preseason take up rate of a player or are the price fluctuations entirely based on transfers that occur after the start of the season ?

knowing the above is going to influence my initial selection. We are all looking to catch the price rises early on, so if a players price is only go to rise based on changes to ownership after the season kicks off then players with less ownership are more attractive to me as they have a better probability of increase to their ownership. I currently have Lukaku in my team, but at 47% ownership there is less room for increased ownership than Lacazette at 19% and Jesus at 13%. I believe that Lukaku will have a better season than the other two, but over a 3-6 GW period anything can happen so they are all just as likely to score a similar number of points.

So my theory is its better to start with the least owned player when choosing from a selection of similar players and therefore increase my odds of greater price rises.

However, if the converse is true and the pre season take up influences the prices in game one then its better to jump on the high ownership players as they are clearly seen as undervalued and their prices will increase after GW1 regardless of how they performed.

I suspect the answer is after the season kicks off but I thought I best check.

I would appreciate it if someone can enlighten me
    Thanks

      After the season starts.

      Points > potential price rises

The only time I'd consider ownership is when picking bench fodder. If I go with a £4.5m forward, it'll the least owned one to lessen the chance of me losing value in him.

The initial ownership does have an effect , the higher owned players need more transfers to rise in price, but points should always be more important than price!

It's after and that's an ownership approach i would strongly advocate, and have been advocating, if you can't choose between two similar players.

    6. Ramboros
      • 14 Years

My understanding is that price falls are based around a percentage drop of ownership, while price rises are based on a specific amount of net transfers in that's identical for every player.

The % decrease makes sense otherwise highly own players prices would plummet if there was a large number of people dropping them. But a large number of drops is relative and may only constitute a small percentage compared to the same number of drops against a low ownership player.

I agree points are more important than price. But say you are considering Alli over Eriksen both are at 9.5 and both likely to score a similar number of points. Alli has 38% ownership and Eriksen 14%, put another way 62% don't own Alli but a massive 86% dont own Eriksen. If they both score in GW1 there is more chance that Eriksen will increase his ownership because more people dont own him. So more chance his price will rise.

      correct ?

      1. Sonny “The Hitman&rdq…

Yes... and visa versa... highly owned 4.0 have less to gain and more to lose... and thus potential fall

    8. Andy_Social
      • 13 Years
      8 years, 7 months ago

In the first couple of GWs there are very few price rises - just half a dozen that the masses jump on. In contrast there are dozens of price drops, and the highest owned players are the most vulnerable. That's why people are warning against buying the likes of Rangel and RLC as they are most likely to suffer price drops.

      1. firetog

If the drops are based on % change rather than Number of drops, then ownership shouldn't matter whether a player is highly owned or not.

        Example 1,000,000 managers
        Lukaku 50% ownership. 500k
        Jesus 10% ownership 100k

If the rules is the prices falls by 0.1 for say a 10% drop in ownership (10% is a made up number for sake of the example), then Lukaku would need 50,000 drops compared to Jesus who would need only 10,000.

There is a side dish of herd mentality.
When high owned players start to be sold the herd tend to stampede through the door to get out 'before the price drop' which becomes self prosephy.

Actually that's not true. Before Chelsea he always preferred to play with 2 forwards, so more 3-5-2 than 3-4-3. He also played 4-4-2 sometimes. He adjusted that at Chelsea to accommodate Hazard.

What are people's thoughts on the Watford defence/goalkeepers for clean sheets on the first 6 GWs on paper they could do very well.

With the new head coach of Marco silva who clearly excelled at hull by shutting out opponents can we see a bargain at the back??

The attack and midfield wouldn't interest me but I can see a lot of potential clean sheets for Watford in the early stages - unsure of there transfer activity mind you but I'm considering gomes in goal or Britos/prodl/ as an option at the back.

        What do you think?

Here are the key points I took away from Inter v Chelsea

(Keep in mind this is just a pre-season friendly)

    1) Willian: He was probably Chelsea's best offensive player. Threatened to take a hold of the match when the rest of our side was rather uninspiring. Probably a shoe-in to the starting line-up, and also the best 7m midfielder in the game.

2)Morata: Didn't show the quality we all know he posseses. It might take some time for him to adapt to the new team, and the upturn of form of Batshuayi might see Morata's minutes shared with the Belgian. Would initially avoid.

    3) Batshuayi: Had a goal incorrectly ruled out for offside. Played well enough to contest for a starting spot. Is likely to threaten Morata's minutes.

    4) Azpi: Played as the right wing-back, taking the berth from Alonso allowing Rudiger to fit into the right side of the back three. Possible rotation head-ache between the three right sided players (Alonso, Azpi, Rudiger)

    5) Luiz: Likely the most nailed defender in the Chelsea backline. Integral to the 3 at the back formation

6)Rudiger: Showed glimpses of quality, though seemed to lack the pace needed for Premier League. Good on the ball and showed strength. Likely to contest for Azpi's spot on the right side of a back three in time.

    7) Musonda: Kickstarted a Chelsea side stagnating in attack. One for the future surely. Impressive display for a lad his age.

Heart didnt seem to be in it, though to be fair you could say that about all the more established players. The youngsters really took the game to Inter though.

      1. I agree but defensively he's almost non existent. We can't have 2 wingers who don't get back as we will concede the goals we have. Pedro next in line after Hazard.

      2. He's playing left of a front 3. We need to give him a chance through the middle for him to really show what he has.

      3. As of now I'm pretty sure Bats will start up front.

      4. Agreed don't forget Moses has been used in both WB positions n pre season.

      5. Yep.

      6. He may be used to counter taller teams at first as Azpi was known to struggle in the air.

      7. Boy has skillz! Couldn't get into the Betis team on a regular basis but has the talent.

Willian is great at tracking back. Pedro is also injured though I agree he's first in line after Hazard (who is also injured). That gives you a straight path into Chelsea attack for 7m.

I would have him for Burnley but not sure how far beyond. Pedro will be fine so it will be those two for 1st few games until Hazard fit (already light training). It's just the transfer waiting to happen that bothers me. I think he will get points.

Any Lanzini love out there? Was on Pens and FKs last season I think. Not big on Willian and considering Zaha's high ownership the little Argentine could be a decent differential
