Marko Arnautovic gets his first minutes for West Ham in a defeat in Germany, while Leicester City’s drab pre-season continues with a goalless encounter at Milton Keynes.

Here are the notes from a low-key Friday.

Werder Bremen 1 West Ham United 0

Marko Arnautovic made his West Ham debut in a narrow loss to a German outfit they will face again today to conclude a two-legged Betway Cup affair.

The summer signing, fit again after a knee injury, played the final 30 minutes against Bremen and showed flashes of attacking threat from his position on the left-hand side of a front three.

Coach Slaven Bilic named a youthful starting XI, with six players aged no more than 21, while all seven of the substitutes he used are expected to start the second leg today.

Another likely to be given pitch-time will be Joe Hart. His rival for the keeper’s jersey, Adrian, played the full 90 minutes on Friday and distinguished himself with a fine double save in the second half.

Club captain Mark Noble lasted just over half an hour of the match before sustaining an ankle injury, while new signing Javier Hernandez played no part at all despite joining up with his new side’s training camp in Germany.

Bilic will hope the Mexican striker gets up to speed quickly as West Ham are currently desperately short of forward options following the sale of Ashley Fletcher, owned by 5.7% of Fantasy Premier League managers, to Middlesbrough.

The coach did, however, give an injury update on key attacking players Andy Carroll and Michail Antonio, who was used as a makeshift striker by the Croatian for some of last season.

“He (Antonio) is ahead of the plan. The plan is for him to miss the first game of the season. Andy is still not able to train with the team. I am frustrated he cannot play, now he is still injured and it is a big loss for us.”

West Ham XI: Adrian; Burke (Arnautovic, 60), Byram (Zabaleta, 60), Collins (Fonte, 60), Cresswell (Masuaku, 60); Cullen (Fernandes, 60), Holland (Snodgrass, 60), Makasi, Martinez (Ayew, 60), Noble (Obiang, 34), Rice.

MK Dons 0 Leicester City 0

Leicester City continued to underwhelm in front of goal with another toothless pre-season performance.

Having sneaked past Luton 1-0 in midweek, Craig Shakespeare’s men went one worse against MK Dons, although his side was picked with another friendly, at Wolves today, very much in mind.

Shakespeare trialled a 4-3-3 formation at Milton Keynes, welcoming back Demarai Gray and Ben Chilwell from extended breaks after their summer involvement with the England U21 side.

“We played a 4-3-3 with three midfielders. We tried to play with a sitter if you like and play through the centre. Matty James swapped with Vicente [Iborra] at half-time to get his fitness levels up.”

Summer signing Iborra again impressed in midfield, but fluffed a chance when put through during his spell playing in a more advanced position after the interval.

Gray has been tipped as a potential break-out player this season should Riyad Mahrez, as expected, leave the club, and he and Tom Lawrence played either side of Leonardo Ulloa up front for the Foxes.

Full-back Daniel Amartey was used at centre-half by Shakespeare, who chose to keep another new signing, keeper Eldin Jakupovic, on the bench as he made no substitutions during the match.

An entirely different City squad, including the majority of their more established stars, will head to Molineux to face Wolves this afternoon.

Leicester City XI: Hamer; Johnson, Benalouane, Amartey, Chilwell; Iborra, King, James; Lawrence, Gray, Ulloa.
Subs not used: Jakupovic, Elder, Ndukwu, Musa.

I asked this a week or two ago but I'm interested in opinions now.

Are you doubling on any defences? Which defences and which players?

I'm not, purely because I think that there are so many good options, and it is better to pick those with attacking ability and cover various options.

Mine is foster, trippier, Daniels, cedric and kompany at present

      I've got a double-double (or will have).

I had Bertrand and Cedric. As Cedric probably won't start GW1 I've got a place-holder for him (Hegazi at the mo, so I've also got double WBA with Foster). I also have double City - it was Walker and Mendy but I've temporarily put Danilo in [you won't read that anywhere else!] until Mendy's ready. My other defender is Trippier.

    433 formation

    Hart/Foster

    Coutinho, Willian, Phillips, RLC, Carroll
    Kane, Jesus, Morata.

    Hummmm...

Charlie Daniels is 31 in September...!

Can his old legs run up and down that left side to the same affect? For me Aké looks like a better pick at the same price.

Playing a back 3 of Cedric, Trippier and Aké so still got plenty of attacking potential in the other 2.

How much stock do people out in having s pricing "structure" withing their squad which allows them to move with one or two transfers if a great pick emerges?

I've always tried to get balance throughout defence, midfield and attack but this year, I feel like three premium forwards might be viable early on.

There is only 4 points for a forward's goal. I am not putting any more up front. 🙂

I have 3 premium up top

        Midfield 9.5 7.0 6.5 5.0 4.5

        Def 5.5 5.0 5.0 4.5 4.5

So can easily switch from 343 to 433 depending on fixtures

I try and have strong players in all positions 2 x def, 3x mf and 2 x fwd. It's not price wise but allows for more easy transfers between big hitters.

None. Don't care about balance, just points.

The two things are related. A structure that reduces the likelihood of needing (multiple) early hits is potentially point saving. A hit avoided is as good as a goal scored.

If there is a "sweet spot" in the FPL pricing structure where there are 3, 4 or 5 players at the same price, any of whom you think is capable of doing well, then that increases the attraction of that price point. You have 2 ways to win. The first is to pick right initially. The second is to be able to switch to the one that starts in good form with only one FT - not needing to release cash from elsewhere for example.

"I want the optimum team for points" is all very well, we all want that. But GW1 is the most information-starved week of the season and often you are choosing between a number of players/combinations where it's really guesswork as to which will work best initially. People like to convince themselves (and others) that they know. But they mostly don't. What there actually is, is a lot of uncertainty.

So there's something to be said for accepting that nailing the optimal team is unlikely without the benefit of hindsight or a lot of luck. And therefore for creating a squad that hits some "sweet spot" pricepoints and is designed to be more easily adaptable to what actually transpires.

This is the kind of stuff that gets missed amongst the "what player?" obsession that often characterises the FFS comments thread. "What structure?" and "what balance?" are equally valid questions but get discussed much less amidst all the (fairly pointless) RMT noise.

Completely agree with this. Starting with 2 expensive options in all outfield positions seems a sound strategy as you'll virtually always be able to transfer in anyone in the early weeks with a single transfer.

Good post. Choosing the right players is a lottery but choosing the right price points can save much awkwardness and potential hits. It's something we should be discussing much more rather than endless RMTs.

Lol, this comment is so on the money. Especially this season where the prices are unusually high, it's important to put a lot of thought into choosing your formation and structuring the budget for each position so you don't over-complicate things. For example, Kane is the most dangerous player. And I'm probably going without him, but I know who to get rid of if I need to bring him in for GW3, and I will leave enough money ITB to do it on a FT.

    Question for the statistics crowd:

What expected ppg would you assign to a 2x4.5 defender rotation pair?

This is for a spreadsheet that I'm building to compare expected return on investment for cheaper / more expensive players.

Thanks! Yes, I'd agree that it's going to somewhere between 4.0 and 4.5.

Right. "Why so much Simon Francis love here? He scored 89 points two seasons in a row. Doesn't take much to predict a similar poor score this year."

It would have been easy for you to go to the transfer page of FPL, select defenders, select 4.5. There, you would have seen that Francis is one of the highest scoring 4.5 defenders in the game. He was also injured, unlike Mee or Lowton. I don't believe that this basic research was an unreasonable expectation on my part.

                      So much for "insight".

Here is some more information for you:

I am a man aged 63, and I have been posting on here since 2008. 🙂

Your age and how long you've been posting here are of no relevance or interest here. I simply pointed out that there's no need to welcome me after 2 years of posting here.

Linking to a Crystal Palace page is similarly irrelevant.

And accusing me of "slagging off all and sundry who are trying to discover the correct information" is also nonsense as you are the only person I directed a negative comment to and this is because I was trying to find out information and you were trolling me deliberately with no information provided in return!

On the subject of information, of course I did a basic search before posting. He played the equivalent of 33 out of 38 matches last year so can't have been injured for long! And as he didn't come in the top three 4.5 defenders from last year and another 8 or 10 have been added who will be playing this year, it's a very reasonable question! If you don't like that, do one!
