Marko Arnautovic gets his first minutes for West Ham in a defeat in Germany, while Leicester City’s drab pre-season continues with a goalless encounter at Milton Keynes.

Here are the notes from a low-key Friday.

Werder Bremen 1 West Ham United 0

Marko Arnautovic made his West Ham debut in a narrow loss to a German outfit they will face again today to conclude a two-legged Betway Cup affair.

The summer signing, fit again after a knee injury, played the final 30 minutes against Bremen and showed flashes of attacking threat from his position on the left-hand side of a front three.

Coach Slaven Bilic named a youthful starting XI, with six players aged no more than 21, while all seven of the substitutes he used are expected to start the second leg today.

Another likely to be given pitch-time will be Joe Hart. His rival for the keeper’s jersey, Adrian, played the full 90 minutes on Friday and distinguished himself with a fine double save in the second half.

Club captain Mark Noble lasted just over half an hour of the match before sustaining an ankle injury, while new signing Javier Hernandez played no part at all despite joining up with his new side’s training camp in Germany.

Bilic will hope the Mexican striker gets up to speed quickly as West Ham are currently desperately short of forward options following the sale of Ashley Fletcher, owned by 5.7% of Fantasy Premier League managers, to Middlesbrough.

The coach did, however, give an injury update on key attacking players Andy Carroll and Michail Antonio, who was used as a makeshift striker by the Croatian for some of last season.

“He (Antonio) is ahead of the plan. The plan is for him to miss the first game of the season. Andy is still not able to train with the team. I am frustrated he cannot play, now he is still injured and it is a big loss for us.”

West Ham XI: Adrian; Burke (Arnautovic, 60), Byram (Zabaleta, 60), Collins (Fonte, 60), Cresswell (Masuaku, 60); Cullen (Fernandes, 60), Holland (Snodgrass, 60), Makasi, Martinez (Ayew, 60), Noble (Obiang, 34), Rice.

MK Dons 0 Leicester City 0

Leicester City continued to underwhelm in front of goal with another toothless pre-season performance.

Having sneaked past Luton 1-0 in midweek, Craig Shakespeare’s men went one worse against MK Dons, although his side was picked with another friendly, at Wolves today, very much in mind.

Shakespeare trialled a 4-3-3 formation at Milton Keynes, welcoming back Demarai Gray and Ben Chilwell from extended breaks after their summer involvement with the England U21 side.

“We played a 4-3-3 with three midfielders. We tried to play with a sitter if you like and play through the centre. Matty James swapped with Vicente [Iborra] at half-time to get his fitness levels up.”

Summer signing Iborra again impressed in midfield, but fluffed a chance when put through during his spell playing in a more advanced position after the interval.

Gray has been tipped as a potential break-out player this season should Riyad Mahrez, as expected, leave the club, and he and Tom Lawrence played either side of Leonardo Ulloa up front for the Foxes.

Full-back Daniel Amartey was used at centre-half by Shakespeare, who chose to keep another new signing, keeper Eldin Jakupovic, on the bench as he made no substitutions during the match.

An entirely different City squad, including the majority of their more established stars, will head to Molineux to face Wolves this afternoon.

Leicester City XI: Hamer; Johnson, Benalouane, Amartey, Chilwell; Iborra, King, James; Lawrence, Gray, Ulloa.
Subs not used: Jakupovic, Elder, Ndukwu, Musa.

      Depends how many participants.

Can take up to an hour sometimes if you have a fair few people.

I think the timings are 30 seconds to a minute and a half and I believe a 8-man league is about 40 minutes when set to the latter.

Andy posted a link on his twitter to a very interesting article on the merits of picking a premium goalkeeper over a budget option. Well worth a read. I would never usually consider heavy investment between the sticks but I have to admit I'm tempted by De Gea as the cheapest way into the Utd defence with those tasty fixtures, particularly with the doubts over Lindelöf.

Keeper rotation then? I've been stung by that so often in the past, always end up leaving points of the bench. I'm a "set & forget" man.

Yeah I got Heaton & Robinson in from day 1 last season and didn't touch them until GW34. It was great to just leave them.

I think I went with that combo due to another article I read on here about keepers actually. Love a good goalie article 😉

Little surprise Andy was promoting something pro Utd 🙂 . To be fair though I do think De Gea is the best Utd pick at the back.

If you've got two cheap GKs with a Man Utd defender it makes sense to switch it round to De Gea and a £4.5m defender.

This is my thinking, particularly if Hegazi becomes nailed at WBA. Foster & Lindelof to De Gea & Hegazi.

It also makes sense to put more money into the more flexible and profitable decision - the defence.

I've always been in favor of a cheaper GK pairing.

The article mentioned 20 points per 0.5m, or 40 points per 1m. Thing is, that additional 1m difference (if you're going with Foster/Elliot for instance), could be more than made up if you get Coutinho (9m) instead of Pogba (8m), for example.

Not to mention if you put your money in attacking options, you can captain them, unlike with GKs. So I'm not going with an expensive GK option, though he puts forward a decent argument.

True that it doesn't take into account the points you earn with the investment of the extra funds, particularly important if you're investing that further forward like you say.

But as Deadstar mentions - if you're going with a Utd defender and a £4.5m keeper then there's a good argument for switching that around to De Gea and a £4.5m defender.

I have never liked Coutinho in my team, and with CL and Barca speculation I'd get rid.

Also if you have Austin he should be starting ahead of Phillips, but definitely ahead of Ake.

I also prefer Lanzini to Zaha, but the Huddersfield GW1 at home means maybe that could be consideration in a few GWs time...

  6. Dumpo

My question is, have I completely lost my mind to captain Benteke for GW1, and also have a Huddersfield defender in my team?

    Foster (Elliot)
Cedric - Trippier - Dawson - Lowe (Rangel)
KDB - Eriksen - Willian (Carroll - RLC)
    Lukaku - Kane - Benteke (c)

I'm fairly set on starting with a 4-3-3.

Considering Chicarito in for Tekkerz, but I quite like Lanzini in for Willian when Haz comes back so will already have West Ham attacker.

I like my team but I'm also concerned by heavy Spurs exposure...

Anyone got any thoughts to help a lost soul?

Weird I just mentioned him on the last page. Rumoured he may move to Swansea to replace Siggy. I wouldn't consider him at WBA. He may not actually start now with Phillips and Rodriguez possible wide players.

Just a quick note before the Chelsea game for those watching Willian. The reason i believe he will dropped asap will become clear, he is fantastic at going forward and supporting but his issue is how much support he gives Moses. In the Bayern game it was zero. Pedro is like a duracell bunny going back and forth helping defend and attack, and unless Wills can show that he has that in his locker i fear he will not last much beyond Burnley.

    1. Skalla
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 7 months ago

Well I agree that is why Pedro was preferred last season but without Haz he is the main playmaker so he has to play with someone else maybe covering for him in defense. He will prob not last long though after Haz is back.

    Cedric, Dawson, Daniels
    Zaha, Alli, Ramsey, Coutinho
    Chicharito, Lukaku (C), Kane

    Subs: Begovic, Carroll, Hunemeier, Rangel

Nice team, plenty of good picks.

Chicharito will be a great option but I'm not sure about those early fixtures.

Ramsey is a gamble of sorts, as is no city cover, but could easily pay off.

Was looking at Milner, mainly due to pens. But with the new signing, CL and the possibility of rotation wanted more guaranteed starters. Not normally a big fan of spending big on defenders, but can see how over the years it's changed to make more sense money being invested at the back

There are some pricey players in this young England squad... (This isn't an XI)

    Pickford (30m) Walker (50m) Stones (50m) Keane (30m) Shaw (30m) Rose (?m) Alli(~500m) Dier(~50m) Chalobah (6m - wtf Chelsea)
    Kane (~600m) Rashford (~60m) Sterling (50m)

Crazy money. Alli and Kane are priceless really.

We could do with some good CBs so we can play a 352 with Kane and Rashford up top and Walker and Rose WBs!!

Tabloid gossip today is if Neymer goes, Barce have a list of 3 replacements - Coutinho, Hazard and Alli. I'd say an offer of £100m would get you any of them, but not less than that. What would you estimate would prise these guys away?

What they're worth and what they would be sold for are two different prices. I can't see Hazard, Coutinho or Alli being sold for anything less than £120m or something around that figure, a piece.

I'll tell you what's absolutely not acceptable - that VVD would cost £70m and Coutinho would go for a few buttons more. Couts ought to be twice the price of VVD.

      1. Davido989

Coutinho wouldn't be sold for anything less than 100m. It would probably be more than that too. The 72m off was just Barcelona's offer. No chance he'd go for that.

All depends if Coutino wants to leave when Barca puts in the offer, then maybe 80mil + some add-ons. Also think he would want to go there to play alongside Neymar not replace him so could be interesting!

Many people think Valencia is worth the extra money over the alternatives in United's defence? Nailed on, durable and has the potential to produce more attacking returns than he did last season.....

    1. Davido989

My worry is 2-3 games a week with him. Recall him being completed rest from PL games at the latter stages of EL.

I don't think that's a pattern we'll see continued into this season. He eventually suffered due to the fixture pile up but generally he's rather durable.

I think Bailly's worth considering. Perhaps overkill at 6, but when the start of the season is so unpredictable, nailing some seemingly guaranteed clean sheets should at least guarantee SOME points

      1. Andy_Social
        • 13 Years

I don't think Bailly's over-priced at all. The problem for all the United defence is that if Lindy continues to make howlers and give away penalties, everyone loses their 4 CS points.

Attacking threat not worth the extra money over Bailly? A team geared to serve Lukaku is one in which Valencia's assist potential should increase, I think.

I would have said Milner will start and he'll be eased in, but we have to factor in CL qualifiers. Milner and Robbo will share duties, and when the CL dust settles whoever's come out on top will get the nail for the PL.

    A little advice...

    Which is better -

    A - Daniels, Alonso, Klaassen

    B - Lindelof, Luiz, Pogba

Daniels should be good for bonus', free kicks etc. But not so much clean sheets. Alonso is basically midfield but worry if Chelsea are signing new LB. And Everton have signed Klaassen purely for goals.
Is Lindelof and Luiz worth it just for the CS and pogba's probably got more goal threat than Klaassen...

      • 12 Years

A, although it's too early for the Klaassen pick imo.

Everton have tough fixtures. Need to see how they line up with Rooney, Sandro and, more likely than not, Siggy.

I think Zaha, Willian and Redmond are better picks for now.

Europa League far worse on a team's FPL prospects than Champions League

Example - Thursday evening games away to Konyaspor in Turkey = Puanlar için kötü

Yes. There's statistical evidence to support that as well. EL teams that qualify through league position finish an average of 3.2 places lower in the season when they play EL than in the season when they qualified.

3.2 places lower amounts to around 10 points fewer in that part of the PL table.

United's performance last season (where they were in top-4 contention for so long) was actually terrific given that they went all the way in the EL and won the LC as well.

Hi Ruth, precisely what I was driving @.

Years past watching last year's FPL darlings like Swa, New, Eve, Whm, fall off due to Europa league has taught me a lesson.

They said, I feel the impact for bigger clubs is lessened due to their depth. (Eg. Spurs, Utd, & Che have seemed to not be as negatively influenced)

      Strong 11.

Don't like the formation though. Bench is too weak imo due to the two cheap strikers. I'd also be worried that you haven't got a lot of flexibility if any of Kane, Aguero, Jesus, Lacazette, Morata or any other strikers really start tearing it up.

Would downgrade one mid and go for another forward in the 6-8mil bracket , just gives more flexibility if some good options emerge.
