The Technical Area makes a return for the new season and I’m delighted to have joined the Fantasy Football Scout writing team to bring this to you.

These articles will mainly be available for members following Gameweek 1 but, for my debut, I offer a preview of what is to come with some analysis of Sunday’s Wembley showpiece.

The final domestic appetiser to the upcoming season, Sunday’s Community Shield between champions Chelsea and FA Cup winners Arsenal proved a sedate affair that will perhaps be remembered more for the involvement of referee Bobby Madley than any single player’s contribution.

Nonetheless, as our last chance to observe two high-profile Premier League sides in action before the Gameweek 1 deadline – and with many popular FPL assets presumed to participate – interest from the Fantasy community was understandably high.

With only the one game to analyse this week, we’ll be focusing our attention on the performances of two newly-signed Arsenal players who put forward interesting, if very different, showings on the field.

Sead Kolašinac

We’ll start with Sead Kolašinac, whose afternoon threatened to be something of a non-event after he was named among the substitutes to open the match. A nasty head injury to Per Mertesacker on the half-hour mark, however, gave the Bosnian his chance to shine; an opportunity he seized with both hands.

Though pre-season projections had earmarked Kolašinac to compete for a spot as a left-wing back in Arsenal’s 3-4-2-1 system, Wenger’s substitution saw the Bosnian fielded as a left-sided central defender alongside Nacho Monreal and Rob Holding.

Typically, we would have expected this more defensive positioning to have impinged upon Kolašinac’s chances to get forward in support of the Arsenal attack. Yet analysing our game data, we can observe that Kolašinac was frequently occupying space upon the left-flank, consistently drifting out to the touchline to receive possession:

Kolasinac – Passes Received
members

This profile translates much more readily to the heatmap of a traditional left wing-back than that of a centre half. In fact, it is eerily reminiscent of the performance and positioning of another left-sided wide player participating in Sunday’s match:

Kolasinac vs Alonso – Touches
members

Given Alonso’s barnstorming FPL campaign in 2016/17, Kolašinac’s tendencies to occupy the same attacking space – even in spite of his ostensibly more defensive position – bodes well for his likelihood of producing attacking returns heading into the new season.

The defender also demonstrated an ability to pose a threat on the end of set-pieces, notching Arsenal’s equaliser by rising to divert Granit Xhaka’s cross into the net.

The underlying numbers for Kolašinac were promising too. Despite playing only limited minutes, the defender produced 17 passes in opposition territory (with a 100% success rate), including five in the final third. These compared favourably to those of Alonso (10, 5) and Victor Moses (12, 7).

It should be noted that Hector Bellerin – playing on the right-hand flank of Arsenal’s formation – outshone even Kolašinac in this regard, with 29 passes in the opposing half and 21 in the danger zone, while he created two excellent goalscoring opportunities in the process.

Such a performance demonstrates the attacking potential of the wing-back position within Arsenal’s current set-up and underlines the tantalising prospects of either player as an FPL asset moving forward.

KolaÅ¡inac also put in an impressive defensive performance, winning all three of his tackles and racking up five recoveries – traits which would translate well into FPL’s Bonus Point System (BPS).

Alexandre Lacazette

In contrast to Kolašinac’s impressive debut, Lacazette cut a significantly less imposing figure during Sunday’s match-up.

Often isolated in space against Chelsea’s trio of centre backs, Lacazette amassed just 24 touches during his disappointing 66-minute spell – fewer than any other starter. Of these, far too many were found by dropping deep into space ahead of Chelsea’s backline, from which he was quickly smothered by defensive pressure.

Lacazette – Touches
members

The Frenchmen displayed occasional glimpses of his attacking prowess. On two or three occasions, Lacazette found himself in dangerous positions; only for Chelsea’s defensive line to close on him before he had a chance to capitalise.

His brightest moment came in the first-half, when he was able to free himself on the edge of the penalty area and curl an early shot against the post. Yet this effort would prove to be Lacazette’s only goal attempt of the match and he would be replaced shortly after the hour mark by Olivier Giroud (who himself failed to make much of an impression, albeit in limited time).

The usual caveats apply here, of course – this was only a single match, and consequently it is certainly much too early for us to jump to any definitive conclusions about Lacazette’s Fantasy prospects for the coming year. For the record, I am optimistic of his season-long goalscoring potential, as are our Rate My Team projections.

It is similarly important to note that Arsenal were missing the combined creative impetus of Mesut Özil, Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey for this fixture – players who would have both demanded defensive attention and worked to produce more threatening through-balls to the striker.

Nonetheless, even after claiming his first trophy as a member of Arsene Wenger’s squad, this was likely not a match that Lacazette will want to remember.

Would be interesting to see how many touches someone like Romario used to have in a game. Could be a fuzzy memory, but seem to remember seeing games where he didn't get involved, but would still pop up and score. Not that I'm saying Lacazette is as good as Romario.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What is a Fantasy Island Risk?

We are looking for your help to define a Fantasy Island Risk, for this element of the Scoutcast - where we select a player that is going under the radar but has the potential to do well in the upcoming Gameweek.

We are not looking for your picks as such - more a definition of the sort of player that should be allowed to be picked and those that shouldn't. If you do suggest a player please give reasons why they are a good Fantasy Island Risk.

For some this should be a genuine risk - involving a player that is few teams and is not considered a heavy hitter. My pick of Leroy Fer for GWK 1 I think fits this bill nicely. He has a tricky fixture - but could do well.

For some its simply about ownership - which is why Luke picked Vardy....who is in v few teams, faces Arsenal but is arguably one of FPL's best players in recent seasons.

What do you think - what should the definition of a Fantasy Island Risk be?

If you look ten pages on this forum and your risk isn't mentioned more than 5 times, that's an island. Like Vardy, Fer.

Mine might be Pickford. No one likes being alone on an island though.

Someone who would raise eyebrows in RMTs. Someone who just divides opinion like Pogba/JRod/Ramsey wouldn't count but I'd go with saying that it should be a player who if I see in a RMT I'd have to check again if I'm seeing it right. Sadly this is a wholly subjective definition.

Both fine choices, I don't think it would be acceptable to pick Vardy if he was playing home to someone like Brighton though, even if his ownership was still small.

Is it not a combination of both? At the moment I would say that Sanchez is a risk!! And yet he could well be on the bench on Friday and score well with a late substitution.

Completely overlooked and has very low ownership...

It's not a risk taking a punt on a cheap player who ends up doing nothing imo. The real risk for me going into this gw is that I don't have the highest owned player, and standout captain option for his home game against the Hammers. Now, that's a risk.

As for the definition (which everyone seems to have ignored haha): I would say, under 5% ownership.

The complaint on the ScoutCast was that Vardy wasn't a risk because he tore the league up two years ago. The simple fact is that if people thought he would do it again this year, he would be selected by more, and he wouldn't be a differential.

It doesn't make sense to me for past pedigree to come into it. The only objective measure of a risk is driven by the market: percentage ownership. Otherwise how far back in history do you look? Is Rooney not a risk because he was great at United many moons ago?

If Vardy were not a risky pick, regardless of history, his ownership would be higher than the threshold. Simple as that.

But Vardy also tore it up at the end of last season and in pre-season while playing for a side that was champions.

If Vardy's fixtures weren't so poor over the first few he'd be in my side - great 8.5 option.

He just doesn't seem that risky to me for one match v Arsenal.

ownership is about lots of things - includin fixtures over time and form.

The FI risk is about a risk for that specific gameweek. Given Arsenal's tendency to concede I'm not sure he is a risk for that match in isolation

what do you guys think about the 5-3-2?
      5 solid defenders (top 5)
kane and lukaku in the front
KDB with two 6m mids and two 4.5 mids

      A) will it work this year?

My criteria would be a simple rule of 3:

      - Someone you would NEVER consider for your own team, EVER
      - Not on ‘The Watchlist’ or top of FFS tables
      - Under 9.0 (any position)

      1. La Décima Chaser
        • 11 Years

I think these are relatively good criteria to use! I may also include that the player has to be projected below a certain figure on the RMT tool. Below 3.50 points projected for that week for example.

For me, a Fantasy Island Risk would be someone who could play in the first couple of gameweeks only because an assured starting isn't fully match fit / is injured. A bit of a punt that could earn some points and increase that all-important team value.

In particular, Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool or Pied at Southampton - although the latter looks less likely now that Cedric has a pre-season game under his belt.

Something to think about before selecting a Fantasy Island Risk player, not that this is a definition of any kind.

-someone who isn't nailed on to always play more than 60 minutes (rotation risk),
-plays in a position that doesn't automatically translate goals/assists (defender/central midfielder, GK, mids and forwards from top teams that are on the bench for most of the game and only get cameos, and all mids/forwards that are not in top 10 on the table),
-has never been top five FPL points scorer in his position in previous years. (bar the ones who are at the end of their careers)
-differential (less than 5% ownership would be great but not always needed if he plays for a team that isn't in top 10 on the table).

I'm sure there are more ideas we can come up with. It's hard to have a short definition when there are so many exceptions.

Needs a strict definition i.e. below a certain price and below a certain ownership.
I think above a certain price players are proven and the feature is good to identify players we perhaps hadn't considered, such as Fer, but might consider taking a punt on.

I think there should be two simple criteria:
      - Under 5% ownership
      - Not in anyone on the scoutcast's team

      And perhaps a third:
      - Not in the current top 6 teams in the league

I think it should be a combination of factors. Something like the player must satisfy at least 3 of the following 4 conditions:
      * Be a non-premium asset (below £7.5m)
      * Not be the main FPL asset at the club
      * Have a tough fixture
      * Have low ownership (8% or less)

Haven't really thought that through fully but I reckon that would box the candidates in reasonably well.

I don't think price should be taken into account. There are times when Daniel Sturridge could be a genuine risk! 🙂

I think Vardy is fine as a risk pick. He's low owned, Leicester didnt do great last season and probably wont this season either, but he's capable of grabbing a brace (question is he a risky pick for your FPL team - id say yes!).

Otherwise we have to ask what is the point in a fantasy island risk - to pick a lowly priced, lowly owned, likely crappy player in the hope that they might do something? I don't get it. I do agree that it would be wise to set some criteria though.

    26. electrue

I'd sort the criteria in the following order:
      - Less than X% ownership
      - Fixture difficulty
      - Rotation/Low minutes risk
      - Not in others team
      - Low price

and if 3/5 apply for a certain player he is a fantasy island risk.

Its difficult to define it in GW1 because a proper established order hasn't occurred yet. I suspect that those below 5% once the season is under way would be a genuine fantasy Island risk.

IMO a Fantasy Island risk should fulfil some or all of the following criteria:

      a) Inconsistent
      b) Not 100% nailed
      c) low ownership

My example of such a player for GW1 would be Olivier Giroud. He isn't the main striker at Arsenal, yet you'd fancy him to come off the bench at some point. And he certainly has the capability to score a brace against Leicester. Yet he's a risk because, as mentioned, he isn' a starter. But potentially rewarding if you nail it.

Price should not be a factor because there are some expensive players who fall into this category as well. However I believe that ownership must always play a factor at some point - it simply isn't a risk to pick someone like Lukaku, irrespective of form, if his ownership is 30% etc.

      For me, differential =/= risk.

If we go that simple then Pedro (3.8%) playing in a front 3 at home to Burnley is a risk. It has to be more nuanced than that.

Your ideal Fantasy Island pick should be the player who is a darling of casuals, high ownership in FPL but utter anathema to FFS writers, posters and RMTs.

Examples that spring to mind are Luiz, Matic, Rooney, Courtois.

At 4.5 last season Heaton was a fantastic bargain but this season at 5 I dont think he offers anywhere near the same value. Keane is gone so I dont think there will be as many CS. Also after watching the Scoutcast Jonty highlighted that Heaton had the best ever GK performance for Bonus and I think saves caught. I have doubts as to whether hr can replicate that this season and for .5 more I shall be avoiding.

No problem. Im currently on Forster in goal because of the fixtures and I dont know who will be nailed in defence aside from Bertrand. Have Valencia at the moment too. If they play 3 at the back he is a great option at WB.

Captain Benteke just for GW1 and then trade for Firmino for GW2? Good differential and season start if it came off. He scored against Schalke. Be daring? Or just start with Firmino and captain Lukaku/Kane/KDB like everyone else?

Sorry, as a Bournemouth fan, I know that he's our captain.. but he's far from "nailed". Yes, we were a better team when he played last year, but there is competition with Adam Smith for the RB position. He will be rotated, therefore he's not nailed at all.

Well, as a FPL player, I think you better check this:

          https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/183/Show/England-Bournemouth

When Francis was injured last Season, you lost 4 on the trot.

He is club captain, and I think that he is nailed. Adam Smith will move to right midfield, as he did last year.

I know that already. And I do think he will start the season, but you've got a different definition of "nailed" to me I think. I can't see him starting every game, which is what "nailed" means to me
