A red card for Kyle Walker stifles Manchester City who once again struggle for goals at the Etihad Stadium, as Wayne Rooney hits back-to-back strikes to reach another Premier League milestone. Here’s the notes from Monday’s contest.

City assets suffer from Walker’s dismissal

While City reacted positively to Walker’s first half dismissal – dominating the second period – the wing-back’s absence had a marked influence on their key assets.

The prospects or Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus were severely dented. The latter gave way for Raheem Sterling at half-time, consigning him to a second successive blank.

Meanwhile, De Bruyne retreated to become a deep-lying playmaker, dictating matters for City and rarely – if at all – threatening to raid the penalty area.

Punishing the pair for their failings is perhaps harsh with a trip to Bournemouth to come. However, in a volatile Fantasy Premier League market, it would seem inevitable. Both suffered losses heading into tonight’s contest following Gameweek 1 disappointment – those sales will now continue and likely accelerate.

As for Sergio Aguero, he also blanked and, after scoring just five of his 20 goals in 2016/17 at home, this may raise the concern on his suitability as a captain option. Two shots, missing the target with both, is not the expected level for an 11.5 forward but, again, Walker’s dismissal can be blamed.

Owned by 543,000+, some 39% of those owners handed him the armband for Monday’s game; their confidence in City’s ability to deliver goals at the Etihad will have suffered another blow.

Surprisingly, Pep Guardiola’s side scored just 37 goals at home last season – 18 fewer than Chelsea, 10 less than Spurs and only two more than Bournemouth.

Sane adds to City wing-back puzzle

Walker’s red card will see him miss the Gameweek 3 trip to Bournemouth, but when he and Benjamin Mendy are available to Pep Guardiola, the City options at wing-back look bewildering.

The decision to deploy Leroy Sane on the left, dropping Danilo to the bench, confused matters further.

Clearly there is a chance that Sane will get his opportunities in home matches. That could see Mendy suffer rotation in the current formation, with Walker perhaps vulnerable on occasion with Danilo available to switch to the right.

In a nutshell, should we consider investment in the improving City defence, we seem to be restricted to the centre-backs with John Stones arguably the most favourable option.

Rooney revels in Manchester return

Of the four top ten Gameweek 2 captain picks on show tonight, Rooney was surely the most unlikely to deliver. But, perhaps typically on his return to Manchester, it was the former United man who gatecrashed the points to claim his 200th Premier League goal.

Owned by 743,000+ (16.9%), Rooney has delivered successive goals to raise his Fantasy stock as a third striker option.

However, he was deployed in a deeper role in Everton’s 3-4-2-1 – joining Tom Davies in support Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the lone striker. With Gylfi Sigurdsson arriving to snatch set-pieces, investment in Rooney clearly comes packaged with a caveat.

Calvert-Lewin is intriguing. He boosted his prospects with a hugely encouraging display and, while Everton will perhaps be expected to enter the market for a striker, the 20-year-old could certainly be a prospect as a 5.0 FPL enabler. He has returned back-to-back assists and should be monitored if it appears that Ronald Koeman continues to put faith in the starlet.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

After i fuked up to lose 0.1 due to zaha drop and now that milivojevic is on his way down I can't afford to get mooy or do -8 and get a 6 mill guy. I had 2 Ft, but was on a clouded moment so I did the transfers even though I could have waited as the drop had already happened. Should I just ride the drop again or perhaps go for someone like Calvert-Levin (direct switch), loftus-cheek to open funds (got Tom Carroll already).

I got bailly + jese for zaha and monreal. Would have done -4 and gotten mooy probably, but I'm uncertain of what to do and would love some inputs and tips of what is a good move. Might just miss another 0.1 as i don't want to take hits.....

Time to swap KdB? He's not a 10 and Silva looks just as goo tbh.

Everton done well holding city and frustrating them and City just looked meh.

Sane made a balls of the lwb position. Berny Silva was running into his own team mates. KdB was too deep, although did look reasonably threatening - but no returns, again. Sane and Silva took some corners too. Aguero looked the best from the lot.

Pep will never win the league with all this rotation and constant changing.

Eriksen, Alonso and Mooy in for KdB, Kolasanic and Willian.

Willians days are numberd, Mooy has some cracking stats even when pivot in 4231, and he's on corners too right? Alonso is basically Chelsea attack and defense in one so ok to dop Willian. And Kola lcb which is not where I want em!

All about the wing backs with teams playing 3 at the back.

But yeah. A bit knee jerky but there's some logic too it. Good idea? bad idea?

I have KDB and I'm going to give him another week. Not his fault they were down to 10 and he got instructed to stay back. If they had 11 for 90 min I doubt KDB would've played so deep. They had to change their whole system.

I would definitely get D.Silva for kdb as you then have city cover and he is having lots of chances to score. Just unlucky with no returns today.
Do you have Kane? Could perhaps consider alli as he will be a differential when everyone goes eriksen. You will be the last to laugh when he gets the goals next weekend against Burnley with no points on eriksen 😛
Alonso I have no comment about 🙂
Got no idea about mooy except that I myself is 0.1 short from jumping on the bandwagon 🙁

    4. Clintymints
      • 17 Years

      I hate dropping him too.

Alternatively I could drop Salah for Eriksen which buys me 1 more week with KdB.

Option A, the original plan from above is

      Foster
      Jones Alonso Zanka Stephens
      Eriksen Salah Mooy Mhkit
      Kane Lukaku

Option B - keeping KdB is

      Foster
      Jones Alonso Zanka Stephens
      Kdb Eriksen Mooy Mhkit
      Kane Lukaku

I like option A since it gives me 1 mil to upgrade Zanka to Trip (eventually) but option B buys me more KdB time.

      A or B?

What are we thinking about Liverpool mids now. Firmino is still pretty nailed for me with pens and versatility (not ideal to be on the wing but it's better than the bench). Currently have Salah, want to switch to Mane but he could be rotated too? Should we just avoid?

    B) Wildcard

Those advising against Wildcarding, are you all doing it after gameweek 3 in the international break en masse so you can get more price risers? That's only 1 gameweek away, how much more information will there be? Transfer deadline yes, potential injured players over the international break yes, does that outweigh getting some of these players at their base price now and potentially owning a stronger team?

    1. Obi-1 Kenobi-0
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 5 days ago

I'm doing it after GW7 for the TV and because Everton's fixtures will have cleared up and Sigurdsson will be on my radar.

      1. _Greg

        9 years, 5 days ago

right, solid plan not related to the masses, good good. I would really like Pickford right now, he looks class and Everton are looking good for 15+ cleanies I reckon.

        1. Obi-1 Kenobi-0
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 5 days ago

Also, the later you use your wildcard, the easier it is to benefit in terms of building team value. As I'm sure you know, transfers made under wildcard do not contribute to the threshold of transfers needed to alter a player's price. The websites will therefore be more accurate the later you wildcard, as there'll be less wildcards used as many will've been burnt already, in the GW3 international break that you mentioned.

            • 16 Years

Interesting. Obviously there's a chance you could strike gold now and keep 8-10 out of 15 at this point the entire season by which the early WC would have been justified...chances are that won't be the case.

Are you going to Wildcard in gwk21 at the latest possible time before it goes to waste?

When are you wildcarding then? Saving for a crisis, say 3 injuries? Remember we get two wildcards to play.

when it's most prudent. Exactly when is hard to say but
2 games in is a CRAZY time to burn it

                Why is it crazy exactly?

I hear people say this yet have never heard a valid reason...

Several former winners of FPL have wildcarded after the first week. Were they crazy?

Nope, which is exactly my point. Playing the WC when you think is right is the correct time to play it.

Too many sheep on this site unfortunately

My team had 6 what I'd call 'issues', players with worrying performance. I think I made mistakes in my initial selection for sure. It was right for me.

I wildcard when sufficient number of games have played and know those players will now no longer do well. KDB, salah etc will still come good

I agree they will, but is there a core of 5-8 players who look on form, are consistent and are at their cheapest current price? I think the answer is yes.

I think the extra information outweighs any price considerations. I would struggle to construct a wildcard team after two weeks that I would have confidence in not to have imploded two weeks later.

Take Manchester United, for example. Even as a United fan I realise that playing two very poor teams back to back might have exaggerated their progress from last season. If that's the case then any wildcard team with triple United (as most would currently include, i imagine) could quickly run aground.

I find myself agreeing with you to an extent, but also I'm not sure what additional info is likely to surface. Kane is always going to do well, all the players you would put in now aren't suddenly going to go crap, they all have pedigree.

So why didn't you pick them in GW1 then? Maybe a lack of information?

The picture will be much clearer after 6 weeks than after 2. The transfer window isn't even closed yet.

I didn't expect Kane, KDB, Jesus to be so bad, to exclude Lukaku, Salah to be benched and to Captain Kane then Salah. I think that's bad luck.

But those players have pedigree too. 😉

Look, I don't care when anyone wildcards. Use it when it best serves your team. But be honest about it, ideally you'd be holding it for longer.

Personally my plan was GW6 or GW8 because there's a fixture turn around then. That's still my plan. But if my team were in a mess I'd use it now. Pretty simple really.

Which is perfectly sound. See if you avoid the inevitable pressure to wildcard next week when everyone is recommending it.

My team was built for first 5 weeks. Sort of. Just couple bad choices gone really wrong (if you want to be result oriented, haha). Not changing that. I can manage without it for now. Likely doing after GW7 pending injuries.

I had Kane Jesus and KDB. I'm now majorly behind. Need to act before I fall further behind and steal a march on others with certain players.

So if I have brought in players on WC hoping for double price rises that now are looking more unlikely I got to careful cos if the ones I actually want rise by .1 then I gain nothing and possible each player I want cost me an extra .1
    This is correct?

Yes it's a balancing act each day now. Make sure you have ones you know you want, remove those unlikely to rise and put whoever back later. I wasn't sure I was going to get Lukaku but he's going up, Jones probably isn't tonight.

    Foster | Elliot
    Kolasinac | Danilo | Cedric | Stephens | Jones
    KDB | Willian | Carroll | RLC | Chalobah
    Kane | Lukaku | Jesus

Even though Danilo will play this week do I go him > Tripper against Burnley?
