It’s time to focus on the captaincy conundrum for the weekend’s ten fixtures.

As always, we check the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s (RMT) reckoning before offering up some differential captains in light of the data analysis.

The Captain Poll

Spurs, Manchester City and Manchester United dominate our Gameweek 3 Captain Poll, with each supplying three of the top nine players.

A home clash with Burnley elevates Harry Kane to the summit for the first time this season.

Sold by over 120,000 FPL managers this week, the Spurs frontman earns 36% of the votes cast despite failing to score in the first two fixtures.

Sean Dyche’s side kept just four clean sheets on their travels last season and conceded an attempt on goal every 4.8 minutes away from home – only relegated Sunderland boasted a worse record.

Despite supplying the assists for all three of his side’s goals this season, Christian Eriksen has convinced just 4% to consider his armband potential.

Meanwhile, a mere 2% are backing Dele Alli for the Wembley clash. Only Eden Hazard (12 to nine) scored more times in front of their own fans among FPL midfielders in 2016/17.

With 28% of the votes, Romelu Lukaku is regarded as Kane’s only real rival as Man United welcome Leicester City to Old Trafford.

Now up to a massive 57% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Belgian bagged a brace on his home debut and followed that up with a strike away to Swansea City last Saturday.

Jose Mourinho’s side have scored four times in both fixtures so far and face a Foxes defence that have shipped at least two goals in five of their seven away matches under Craig Shakespeare.

This also brings Paul Pogba (3%) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (2%) into consideration, with both outscoring Lukaku over United’s opening pair of matches.

Ranked joint-top of the FPL standings on the back of a goal and two assists, Pogba has been acquired by a massive 398,000+ managers since last weekend.

Meanwhile, the Armenian has racked up four assists and served up double figures in both appearances.

Man City roll up to Bournemouth on the back of a fine away record – they scored more goals on their travels (43) than any side last season.

Yet their slow start to the current campaign means that Sergio Aguero (3%), Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne (both 2%) are largely ignored.

Off the mark at Brighton in Gameweek 1, Aguero netted twice on five separate occasions away from home last term and scored more goals on the road (15) than any other forward.

Hauled off at the break on Monday as City regrouped following Kyle Walker’s dismissal, Jesus netted in all but one of his four away appearances last season.

Meanwhile, De Bruyne’s total of seven efforts on goal is ranked top for Pep Guardiola’s men – though all but one has been fired from range.

Elsewhere, a handful of in-form differentials could emerge as very canny picks.

West Ham’s Javier Hernandez bagged a brace away to Southampton and now pays visit to Newcastle United’s patched-up rearguard.

Chelsea’s two-goal Marcos Alonso entertains an Everton side that he scored against in a 5-0 win at the Bridge last year.

And Liverpool’s Sadio Mane scored in both clashes with visitors Arsenal in 2016/17 and has found the net in each of the opening two Gameweeks.

He's more nailed that Davies and he offers attacking threat. He has that link up with the long ball to alli going on too. Already tried it a couple of times. Set and forget. Poch never tells truth with injuries. Could rose be on his way back

    Caveat: biased pool fan.

City have spent a fortune on full backs, they are in fashion as wing backs.
Liverpool's total spend is about 40 mil for:

Clynne, TAA, Gomez, Flanno, Moreno, Robertson & Milner (utility)

TAA will usurp Clyne, he's that good. Moreno looks a different player this year. Gomez needs to kick on following injury but is decent, Flanno was awesome about 3 years ago but injury hit him, Robertson looks neat and tidy, Milner is just Mr reliable.

I'd not swap our full backs with City.
Our centre backs on the other hand........

TAA is at least level with Clyne now. He'll only improve.

TAA is looking great but such early days for him.
Robertson had a great debut but again, so early.
Gomez could potentially be good but again, in the future.
Moreno is a defensive liability even though he sometimes looks great up the other end.
          Milner was a stop gap.
          Clyne is dependable at best.
          Flanno not PL quality.

I'd much prefer Citeh and Spurs and Chelsea full backs (at this moment)

            TAA is awesome.
            Robertson wait and see.
            Gomez is off the pace.
Moreno drives me around the bend. Teach him to defend, awesome going forward.
Milner will do a job anywhere.
            Clyne is overrated.
Flanno was awesome when we finished 2nd. Got injured & is now a bit poor.

            I'd prefer our full backs.

Right back, TAA is going to be a huge player.
Like Coleman pre injury, Alonso is arguably a mid, Rose & Stewart Pierce 🙂

You have rhymed off seven full backs the best of which are no better than average and the rest of them tripe.. TAA has shown potential so not fair to judge him either way right now he could be the best of a very bad bunch

      1. Clump
        • 11 Years

More a case of showing value.
Take United for example, can't see a decent full back there bar Valencia. He needs to get forward a bit more too.

Valencia one of the best around.. the others aren't at his level but solid enough and with the worlds best goalkeeper a solid collection of centre halves and a top of the range CDM in Matic we'll get by

I wasn't posting about goalkeepers, but DDG is quality, Matic good too.

It just feels like an unnecessary risk to captain Kane when Lukaku is in such hot form with such high ownership. Is there any reason to snub that this early in the season?

Captaining kane at home to Burnley after he's had 14 shots and hit post twice is hardly a risk. Which ever way you go id say the better player is kane. The worse team out the two is Burnley. Lukaku is more of a risk if anything

    Thoughts on this WC team?

    Foster-Elliot
    Alonso-B.Davies-Hegazi-Zanka-Mariappa
    Eriksen-Pogba-Tadic-Richarlison-T.Carroll
    Kane-Lukaku-Chicharito

If Zanka and hegazi both rise tonight I will have gained .2 this week from playing the WC, that being said I'm not opposed tomorrow morning making some changes after the price rises. Thoughts on these options:
    Zanka>Lowe (Gained .1 rise)
    Richarlison>Phillips
Pogba>Mkhti (Want to do this one as I think Mkhti will still outscore him)

Thinking long term here and if Kane fails he becomes Firmino and on of Tadic/Richarlison gets upgraded. Thoughts?

Very strong - pretty much the WC template. Would maybe downgrade Jones + one of Jese/Richarlison to allow for Firmino over Chicarito.

Good but is jumping on quite a few big point players from las week, particularly Jesé Richarlison. Both have quite tough fixtures coming up but good luck it may pay off big time

    Team One - 433

    Elliot
    Trippier Cedric Dawson Hegazi
    Sanchez Pogba Mkhi
    Kane Lukaku Chicharito

    Nordfelt / Mbemba / Carroll / Chalobah

    Team Two - 343

Actually no. Klopp on injuries: "Nothing major. Trent had a dead leg. Emre had a little twist, shouldn't be too serious."

        • 12 Years

willian with his 9 points turned into a decent value pick over-all as a 7m mid. He is only outscored by Richarlison and Jese (both of which I don't think anyone saw coming). To add, Jese only outscored him by 1 point. All other midfielders above him are more expensive than him.

If only he had scored instead of hitting the goal post. There would be scenes 😀

Obviously this isn't counting the budget midfielders who are outperforming their price tags greatly

        A) 5-3-2 (with suttner)
        B) 4-4-2 ( with Tarroll)
        Ç) 4-4-2 (with gross)

Currently at B , would probably keep it that way
