The Manchester clubs are united in tormenting Fantasy Football managers.

In fairness, we should have expected Pep Guardiola’s City teamsheet to prove a source of frustration. It should come as no real surprise.

Even so, he seems determined to baffle us.

Having withdrawn Gabriel Jesus at half-time on Monday night following Kyle Walker’s dismissal, it appeared to signal that Guardiola’s affections were leaning towards Sergio Aguero for the lone striker role.

But just six days later, it was Aguero who made way as the City manager shuffled his formation and personnel in a bid to solve the frustration of Monday’s misses.

Aguero travelled to the Vitality Stadium today on the back of seven goals in his last seven away trips. He was backed by over 265,000 (5.7%) Fantasy Premier League managers with the captaincy.

Inevitably, Jesus took his opportunity to justify his selection. He served up his first goal of the season at Bournemouth having been sold by over 119,000 managers, triggering a 0.1 drop in price.

To make matters worse Aguero, along with today’s other omission from Monday’s teamsheet – John Stones – were both introduced from the bench by Guardiola. Auto-subs and Vice Captains were nullified.

City’s formation change – a move to 4-3-3 – also saw Kevin De Bruyne retreated alongside David Silva and Fernandinho as part of a central three.

That role muted his goal threat and again left him probing around the fringes of City’s 2-1 victory.

Statistically, the Belgian was still the most creative player in Gameweek 3 so far, providing four chances and laying on a big chance for Nicolas Otemendi who struck the post.

But those brief flashes will be lost on his Fantasy owners. They will continue to plot the exit of a 10.0 priced asset that has delivered three successive blanks. De Bruyne has already been sold more than any other player since the passing of today’s deadline.

As for United, while they engineered a 2-0 victory over a stubborn Leicester City at Old Trafford, Fantasy managers were left smarting by Romelu Lukaku’s penalty miss.

It remains to be seen if this dents Lukaku’s stock. There will be an ongoing debate on whether he will retain spot-kicks and whether Paul Pogba could be the beneficiary in waiting.

But for now, we can only consider what comes next in this current Gameweek.

Captained by over 1.7 million (37.3%) FPL managers, Lukaku’s zero point return sat alongside Aguero’s failing and a first blank from Pogba to set up Sunday’s performers.

Spurs’ Harry Kane now heads into a Wembley date with Burnley sporting over 741,000 armbands. Some 53% of his 1.3 million owners have trusted him as their skipper.

Confidence in Kane has been dented following his two single point returns, but now the scene is set for him to deliver the season’s first major twist.

A double-figure tally would cause a significant swing. Couple that with an impressive performance from Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and it would represent a turning point that could spark transfer hits and Wildcards aplenty.

While Saturday disappointed, it means that Sunday could be huge for all kinds of reasons.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I had a really bad allergic reaction this morning, took some medicine that makes you drowsy. Felt sick after that, and just rested.

Woke up and I've missed the Mane price rise, so now I can probably never upgrade Salah to him again.

    Feeling absolutely sick and frustrated.

I'm kinda joking but definitely very frustrated at where we are right now. At least Pep has gone back to four at the back. Know it's early days but United look damn good.

Also think you're giving a bit too much credit with Sterling "chipping" that in 😉 But I'd give the lad a rib-crushing hug if I saw him.

Bailly too. You can make a case for the entire United defense being better than whomever City defend with.

Well who knows with Pep, but I'd say that De Gea, Bailly, Matic for sure. Martial, Mkhitaryan, Pogba maybe. Lukaku unsure, depends on how Kun/Jesus play.

I think that a Manchester XI is probably:
              ----------------De Gea------------------
              Walker---Kompany---Bailly---Mendy
              ----------------Matic---------------------
              -----De Bruyne----Silva/Pogba------------
              Bernardo/Mkhitaryan--Aguero/Lukaku---Sane/Martial

Yeah, but I don't have a rotation with Mee. Started out with 4 5.0s: sou utd wba being the others. I have enough to do Dann to Monreal now that Monreal has dropped but a Dann price drop rules that one out. Was going to save otherwise.

My ML rival made his transfers one hour before deadline every week last season. He finished 1k overall.
I can't help but agree that early transfers can sometimes be good for the bank but waiting and making a calculated decision is more important.

I like to make early transfers earlier in the season, try to position myself for investments, and be more calculated in the 2nd half of the season.

I find all this talk of taking price drops on the chin a little short sighted.

Last season I set my team and due to other commitments, didn't follow the game until mid October. My TV was above 100m due to some initial good picks but I'd lost around 0.5/6m on price drops.

Ranked around 2m, I got back into, focused alot on TV which I rather regret, but I ended up with a TV above 107m and finished somewhere inside 50k.

Price drops at this stage do not deserve all the attention they get on this site. Ritchie dropped tonight. Big deal. I got 6pts off him yesterday, he's got good fixtures and if he gets another assist in the next 2 games he's averaging nearly 4ppm which is fine for a 6m player.

How many people dropped Daniels and Jesus due to their imminent fall. They both returned pts this GW.

TL;DR if you put a player in your team for your gw1 WC with the next 6weeks in mind, then hold faith and don't use pts to buy your TV

TV is not the be all and end all. But having between 106 and 108 for a really good DGW team towards the end of the season is nice.

And sometimes having the cash makes you go for the more expensive player which is not always the correct call.

I think this year they adapted the algorithm and price rises and drops are not that frenetic as last year. You are right some times you can take a drop and other times no.. last year i wouldn't say team value was that important.. If you recall sanchez, hazard, kane, aguero never fired at the same time so having an insane team value wasn't necessary. Towards the last gws probably a high team value could allow you a very strong team for the dgws.

0.1 drop is like a 0.5 early on. At least there is a 3.9m defender now.

    5. fedolefan
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 7 months ago

Being patient is a little different from price drops. Prices are very important now. Daniels and Jesus are decent FPL picks so a price drop on them doesn't matter since you know they will return sooner or later. Price drops on punts/budget mids can be very important for a 0.1m price drop at this stage is equivalent to a 0.5m price drop. Let's say you started with Lindelof/Darmian, who were 5.5m and price dropped to 5.3m/5.2m, then that spot has been downgraded from a premium defender spot to a mid price defender mainly because of price changes. You can't swap to a Davies/Trippier/Monreal or whomever unless you make another transfer. There is merit to it.

      1. Pep says
        • 10 Years

Lindelof and Darmian were not good picks though Tbf. Their minutes were always questionable.

          • 11 Years
          8 years, 7 months ago

Well there are punts and non-performing budget mids. What about Fraser? Whom are you getting if he drops to 5.4m? You can't get everything right at the start of the season.

      2. Pep says
        • 10 Years

And I did say, unless the player is injured or dropped. Then obviously, the transfer is worth while as this player is getting 0pts.
