Are Harry Kane and Romelu Lukau about to make this season very dull?

Many of us marvelled at the array of attacking options we faced prior to Gameweek 1 and, even today, the choices showed up; goals for Alexandre Lacazette, Gabriel Jesus and Alvaro Morata demonstrated that.

But there is already a feeling of inevitability about the fact that Lukaku and Kane have dominated as the top two captain picks for four successive Gameweeks.

The Spurs’ striker’s “mini drought” ended today at Goodison Park – perhaps the least likely venue for a haul when we studied his opening four Gameweeks. But the Toffees were poor and simply folded to an impressive Spurs display.

Now, with the next four fixtures looking so favourable Mauricio Pochettino’s side, Kane’s bandwagon will surely gather pace, stalled only by the fact that 30% of Fantasy Premier League managers may be otherwise distracted by replacing the suspended Sadio Mane in midfield.

It now seems only a matter of time before Kane’s 26% ownership rises and starts to reach levels similar to that of Lukaku.

The Manchester United striker was hardly spectacular at Stoke but, again, he found the net and could have scored more. Owned by 58%, if he remains free of injury, it’s feasible that he could even span the entire season as the go-to captain option for the majority of managers; 37% backed him today, with Kane back on 11%.

With the Wildcard active, I pondered losing one of this pair – temporarily gambling on Lacazette outscoring Kane today and paying the price.

I’m not sure I want to taste that medicine again. Fortunately, the funds have been reserved to bring in the Spurs man ahead of Gameweek five, and he’ll be locked in from now on.

Indeed, I’m now wondering if that means that the scope of my attacking changes this season will be limited to my third striker and an occasional shuffle of three big-hitters in midfield.

My faith in Kane is pretty much unshakable once the goals start rolling. Meanwhile, Lukaku looks likely to keep scoring merely by turning up to lead a United attack powered by Paul Pogba’s physicality and fed by Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s guile.

We can flirt with alternative options, even experiment with the captaincy from time to time, but giving up on the security on offer from Lukaku and Kane won’t be easy.

The aforementioned Jesus, Lacazette and Morata all have their merits. The latter is now the top scoring striker but, presumably surrendering spot-kick duties to Eden Hazard, I’m not convinced he or even Jesus can live with the “big two”.

I’m preparing to watch Kane and Lukaku dominate, push 30 goals and battle for the Golden Boot. That would tie up 24 million of my budget over the season and restrict my ability to react to the big-hitter bandwagons in midfield.

My season might be limited to switching Spurs, Liverpool and United midfielders to form, and shuffling some defenders according to fixtures.

That doesn’t sound all that appealing, but I’m not sure when I’ll next have the balls to change it.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I feel like he's going a bit under the radar. Even that Liverpool fixture doesn't look bad when you consider their CL involvement and questionable defence. Trouble is how do you fit him in. I've got Kane - Lukaku - Tammy and happy with all of them so far / not willing to find £3m to upgrade Tammy.

Looking for suggestions for cheap defender replacement for Dummett (injured and out for another 2 months). Rotating with Swansea and Brighton.

I was also looking at Leicester. But Simpson is owned by 4.8% people and the way prices are acting this season, he might soon drop to lose me another 0.1 (I already lost 0.1 on Dummett).

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Lessons learned from Gameweek 4

The first match back after an international break can produce some surprises. But with an extra week's data it can also offer some invaluable lessons.

What are the key lessons you've learned from Gameweek 4 so far?

Here's a couple to get the discussion started.

You get what you pay for at the back. Many of us have loaded up with cheap defenders and goalkeepers from West Brom and Southampton but there seems to be plenty more chance of points by spending more on the likes of Davies at Spurs or Arsenal 's Kolasinac.

Kane is looking a viable captain for the next few Gameweeks and big sofas will be needed for those without him.

Patience is a virtue - Brighton can score, KDB can assist ... they punished many a seller this week.

I get the sense Man Utd are regressing to the mean - still good, but they will concede and not score quite so many.

Early days but I think pogba is winning with pogba v Mkhi battle. He's certainly the one I'd prefer to get in.

Kane sellers made a big mistake.

I stuck with Jesus, Gross and Kolasanic too and they all came good. Hoping new recruit Brady does something today.

Monster 80 points on the board and 5k rank GW & OR! As a lot always seem to say patience gets rewarded and the best players always come good, i.e. KdB, Kane, Jesus.

Double Southampton defence is no longer fun (I've already shipped Stephens)

Kane is definitely essential again and will be captain for the next few GWs.

Eriksen over Alli still looks the way to go.

I played Trippier for one last hurrah and he delivered...thanks Kieran! He's now morphed into Bavies for me.

I think Morata is a great buy...I'm foregoing Lukaku for him.

Pogba certainly looks like the one to have out of him and Mkhi now...I fear Mkhi might fade away now and suffer a lot of CL rotation.

Choupo-Moting...who knew? 5.5m for him, OOP and Stoke's fixtures easing...better prospect than Brady IMO

True but it's not a lesson really is it? People have those players as they are searching for value at the back so they can get the strikers for the best teams that score the most goals.

Not a lesson for a fantasy professional like yourself :). The players priced higher for better teams of course offer this haha.

That we don't need to knee jerk transfer on Saturday night to catch price rises on players we're going to get in. Davies doesn't rise after that haul, neither did Kane. Nice to be able to wait until at least Sunday matches are played. Who knows maybe even the CL matches!

Patience is only seen as a virtue in hindsight. I sold Gross for Brady. Clearly a terrible mistake now but with no shots on target or even team goals in three games it wasn't exactly hasty to ditch. Awful luck.

I think if you look at someone with no form, don't hang around getting rid because we're supposed to be patient. If the form is kind of there as with Kane, who I kept, there's case for holding.

      Key lesson - patience
Kane, KdB, Jesus, Aguero etc. didn't become bad assets in a few weeks
Liverpool mids will not deliver every week
Arsenal will not concede every week
Man U will not have a cleanie every week
Get your captain pick right and don't mess around with lesser mortals when Kane and Lukaku are available
      Key lesson - patience

I think the main takeaway from this gameweek is that you can't have them all!

We probably knew that already, but yesterday's matches really hammered the point home.

It's looking like you can't go wrong with the premium forwards in FPL this season - there's Kane, Lukaku, Aguero, Lacazette, Jesus, Morata, and if you drop down to the next price bracket, you've got Firmino and Vardy.

The most expensive midfielders in Sanchez, Hazard and KDB maybe haven't proven their value yet, but they'll still be a factor in our seasons. From 8.3-9.6, Liverpool, United and Spurs each have two of the top ten midfielders so far.

We're also spoiled for choice for premium defenders, with some of the best teams in the leagues playing wing backs and/or looking solid at the back. Davies looks a bargain as long as he's in the team, Alonso should carry on where he left off last season, Kolasinac is playing the role we hoped he would, with good fixtures to come, United have three clean sheets in four, and even City defenders are flying slightly under the radar - Mendy was very impressive going forwards.

Sacrifices have to be made somewhere, and big points are going to be scored by players not in your team every week.

Not sure how much we should read into KDB, first goal was against the run of play, although it was an excellent pass. A lot of people got in Eriksen so still think it was the correct move.

Pogba probably my preferred United mid too but on another day Mkhi gets an assist for that Lukaku goal.

Brighton were probably a bit lucky. Seen a few xG stats for them ranging between 0.35-0.53

Davies was already posting great stats, will look to get him in for this great run of games. Think worrying about Rose now is like worrying about Costa's 5th yellow last season

I liked Kolasinac. Plan was to givr him Bournemouth and wait until after Chelsea, plan still on.

Kane captain for sure from now on.

Lukaku I still think may have to go due to value argument. 4 in 4 isnt bad though.

Southampton still have 2 clean sheets in 4, dont think defenders are that bad although I may offload until GW8. Attack is awful though, Gabbiadini has to go.

      1. Still Unsure
        8 years, 10 months ago

He also should've had an assist it the first goal if Pogba could head properly and not deflect it off Rashford. Then Mkhi has an 8 pointer + bonus. Small things make a big difference.

My lesson was not to make moves which are not bankers: for 2 weeks i was trying to convince myself to shift out kdb and kolasinac (for a hit) for naughton and sanchez (capt) cos i didnt feel there was a clear captaincy choice despite me owning kane and lukaku and firminio.
Obviously there werent enough arguments there for me to do that despite me contemplating the move untill the very last minute of the transfer deadline.
Would have missed out on 11(kolasinac) and 9 (kdb) while would have not captained kane (13) and would have incurred a hit (4).
Thus avoided a negative swing of 35 (less wtvr naughton scores vs newcastle). Good times

My transfer of Jesus to Firmino cost me 10 points compared with leaving it till GW5 as I had originally intended (which would have left me with two free transfers for GW5 plus the flexibility of possibly using them differently).

But was it a mistake? I'm not sure - the RMT tool recommended me to captain Jesus instead of selling him, but the prevailing opinion was that Firmino was likely to outscore Jesus in GW4 against a Kompany-less defence - and in an alternative universe that could have happened.

I now have one injured player (Kompany) and 3 others who didn't start in GW4 (Willian, Yoshida and Loftus-Cheek), and may be tempted to wildcard earlier than the second international break.
But I am unlikely to be tempted to copy Mark's wildcard squad!

This is worrying. I was ranked 80 last week on LMS and now dropping to 1k+.
What's the minimum score looking currently? @TM

Thoughts on Man City coverage? One of the most atracking teams but can't figure out who I want in my team. Jesus looks the best of the lot but his mins in the last 4 games has been 77,45,81,56.

Is it best to avoid city from fantasy perspective?

45 was because of Walker's red. Yesterday's was because they were 3-0 up

This is irrelevant imo. Who cares why, it's still Jesus the one making way every match. It's definitely something I'd be worried about.

I may look at one of their wing backs in a few weeks as 'attacking' cover in the same way I use Alonso for Chelsea.

Will be interesting if there is a pattern of rotation once the Champions League starts with Sane or Sterling getting more playing time in the Premier League.

      Say no to coverage.

      Especially Man City. Rotation central.

I am not sure if i should consider myself lucky or unlucky.
    Did these transfers from GW3 -> GW4:

    Jesus -> Abraham
    Valencia -> Bavies
    Doucoure -> Alexis Sanchez

      Was this for a -4 or a -8?

Seems you made the wrong move.
