This Sergio Aguero chap looks a good option.

Twenty goals in 25 starts last season; he’s scored 24 and 26 goals in his two previous campaigns.

Priced at 11.4, cheaper than he’s ever been – he looks useful.

Of course, we all know this, it’s just that today’s devastating hat-trick at Watford has provided us with an almighty jolt and left us questioning our logic.

Seven days ago I wondered whether we will ever need look beyond the Harry Kane/Romelu Lukaku combination up front.

In true “knee-jerk” fashion, a week later, I’m now left asking if we can afford to overlook Aguero.

We can’t beat ourselves up; our reservations to this point were understandable.

Pep Guardiola’s plans with the Argentine, working in tandem with his apparent darling Gabriel Jesus, were shrouded in uncertainty.

Aguero has started up with Jesus in four of five Premier League matches. However, he was dropped to the bench at Bournemouth – a decision that appeared to confirm our fears that we could not rely on Aguero and Pep.

But today’s treble took Aguero to four goals since the south coast “rest” and the impact has been instant.

Over 74,000 have already moved to acquire Aguero, with Lukaku the major fall guy. The Manchester United striker has lost over 16,000 owners to his City rival before he’s even kicked a ball in Gameweek 5.

Some are clearly convinced, and the rest of us are left wondering if we should follow suit. City’s fixtures are more than enticing, and the prospect of watching Aguero run riot clutching FPL armbands is a petrifying thought.

Indeed, the only consolation today was that Aguero’s ownership remains relatively modest. He was part of just 502,000 squads ahead of Gameweek 5, and captained by 39% of those managers.

His 20-points will still make waves across mini-leagues and ranks, but it’s surely the least impactful hat-trick of Aguero’s illustrious FPL career.

But the haul hit even harder as a result of Kane’s bitterly disappointing blank.

Almost a million (20.1%) of FPL managers trusted Kane with the armband and were left frustrated by Spurs’ inability to breakdown a stubborn Swansea at Wembley.

Everything – the form, fixture and the statistics – all pointed to Kane being the Gameweek’s must-own, high-scoring option.

But there’s that logic again.

The same thought patterns that can perhaps persuade us that David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne or Gabriel Silva can cover Aguero’s future tallies.

Maybe, like a good few struggling Premier League managers, we just need to go back to basics.

Selecting Aguero in your Fantasy Football team used to be our rule number one. It was our basic instinct.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So far, yes. So many highly valued players returning points and no quality cheapies like Vardy/King/Kane/Mahrez of previous seasons.

This is exactly the problem. And there are also more top attacking teams than there used to be. The PL has changed in that respect.

Number of teams to score more than 2 goals per game over a PL season:

        12/13 - 1
        13/14 - 2
        14/15 - 1
        15/16 - 0
        16/17 - 5

Last season looks like an outlier but this season could easily be similar based on what has happened so far. Which means that there are more attacking players scoring lots of points. Which means you can't have them all.

At the same time, FPL have increased the number of players priced above 9m (premiums). So the pressure on budget is bigger as well. Until the bargain attackers emerge (if they ever do) it's not going to get any easier and even when that happens there will be the tricky task of which top attackers to have and when.

Before last season you could just build a team around Aguero (or before that Suarez) and you'd be fine. It's not that simple any more. The game this season presents a whole new challenge.

Just looking at what could be afforded on a wildcard........

    4.5GK
    Davies, Kolasniac, Jones, 4.5DEF
    Eriksen, Mkhi, 6.0MID
    Mr. X, Mr. Y, Mr. Z

    Elliot, RLC, Carroll, 4.5DEF

With the strikeforce either being Lukaku/Morata/Aguero or Kane/Morata/Jesus.

Not too shabby really for a side that is inherently unbalanced.

I think GW8 has a bigger shift (Man U down; Chelsea and Man City up), and it's timed with an international break, so I think that's a more optimal time to wildcard.

Either now or the international break (GW8?) make sense to me.

I think I'm holding off until then as (beyond the international injuries that could change things) I still have question marks over the likes of Kane, Lukaku, Arsenal, Everton, Hazard, Sanchez, Coutinho and Lacazette amongst others. Even Aguero vs Jesus might not be as clear cut as it looks now.

Well the other way to look at it is that if you wildcard now you could have 2fts for the international break. A four point hit at that point would allow you to adjust nicely to whatever changes.

    Fabianski (Elliott)
    Davies Jones Clark (Naughton Rosenoir)
    Salah Eriksen Brady Mkhi
    Kane Morata Firmino

Best move of these: (Exact funds so can't wait)

    1) Naughton to Kola, Eriksen to GroB, Firmino to Aguero -8
    2) Mkhi to Atsu, Firmino to Aguero -4, 0.5m to allow 433 option by Rosenoir upgrade
    3) Mkhi to Gross, Firmino to Aguero -4, both Brady & Gross perma starters

I started the season with Jesus and captained him against Brighton, he got a yellow card and nothing else. I kept faith with him and he brought me a further 1 point after coming off at 45 mins. I transferred Aguero in for Jesus (at the last minute after he tweeted how excited about the game he was) and captained him against Bournmouth, only for him to be benched and to come on for a further 1 point (while Jesus scored). In the two weeks since I wildcarded, getting rid of all my city players cause I couldn't trust any of them to start, Jesus and Kun have gotten 47 points between them.

I know if I bring one of them back in it will be another 1 pointer but I don't think I can resist.

I have exact money for Mkhi + Firm > Gross + Kun, do I do it?

    1. Balls of Steel
      • 10 Years

I think it will be the turn of Jesus next week at home to "why can't we buy a goal Crystal Palace".
Having either of Kun or Jesus who is 1 million cheaper will return a healthy points score most weeks.

Aye. A lot of first teamers will still be in action, particularly for teams outside the top 6.

DDG Stephens and Firmino -> 4.0 Naughton and Kun -8? Would play Elliot every week

DDG and Firmino are good picks, you just need to be patient. Getting rid of Stephens is the priority.

    Glad I have my WC.
Davies benched when just brought him in.
Vardy flagged when I just brought him in.
    No city cover
    No pool cover.

Think I need to have a long hard look in the mirror... 🙂

You'd hardly sell Davies on a wildcard though?

Money not a factor, which Man City defender: Walker, Mendy or Otamendi?

Walker, but not really cause his 10pointers but he is less injury prone than Mendy and has been awesome down that right hand side. Not as accurate as Mendy in picking players in the box but if i had to choose, Walker.

Sometimes I wonder if I don't just beat myself at this game without any other help from anybody.

I spent most of the summer announcing that seventh on this table would come good this year along with Ritchie, a free role behind the striker now and in off the wing..and also a damned near monopoly on set pieces...
    http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/4386/

Do I have either of them at this point ?...do I hell...

I wrote a community article about investing in premium defenders over mid priced mids and ignored my own advice.

No longer a winger and nobody nicking set pieces off him. Different pick this year and will just tick along nicely...

    My Lukaku less WC team...

    Fabianski, Elliot
    Alonso, Keane, Lascelles, Naughton, Rosenior
    Salah, Silva, Brady, Ritchie, Carroll
    Vardy, Kane, Aguero

    Worth it?

I'd lose Alonso if it meant finding a way to do Vardy>Lukaku.
