Both Liverpool and Stoke City look set to go into Gameweek 6 with a host of defensive concerns.

Meanwhile, Swansea City boss Paul Clement is mulling over a first start for Wilfried Bony for the visit of Watford to the Liberty Stadium.

Dejan Lovren is a major doubt for Liverpool’s trip to Leicester with a back problem, while Joel Matip and Emre Can are also nursing knocks, though the latter was pictured in training on Thursday. Sadio Mane serves the final fixture of his three-match suspension in the visit to the King Power. Jurgen Klopp may now be forced to field a makshift backline, with Joe Gomez retained in a central role following his EFL Cup outing and Trent Alexander-Arnold returning at right-back.

Earlier this morning, Stoke manager Mark Hughes conceded that he has a number of problems in defence ahead of the home meeting against Chelsea. Geoff Cameron and Ryan Shawcross are definitely out due to injury, Kurt Zouma is ineligible to face his parent club, while Kevin Wimmer is rated as “touch and go” after sustaining a hamstring injury. Hughes could now look to both Erik Pieters and Glen Johnson as stand-in centre-backs should he retain a three-man defence.

Swansea City head coach Paul Clement has revealed that Wilfried Bony is in contention to make his first league start of the season against Watford.

But Hornets defenders Sebastian Prodl and Younes Kaboul remain sidelined for the Liberty Stadium visit and Miguel Britos is still suspended.

Pedro Obiang and James Collins will both miss the home clash with Spurs, but Mark Noble is available again. Manuel Lanzini is back in training, but this weekend is too early for the Argentine.

Jonathan Walters is expected to miss Burnley’s home meeting with Huddersfield Town due to a knee problem.

And the Terriers will be without midfielder Danny Williams for the Turf Moor encounter due to a broken bone in his foot. Summer signing Steve Mounie misses out once again due to a heel problem, with Laurent Depoitre expected to shrug off a muscle problem to deputise up front.

Tyrone Mings has been ruled out for around two months with a back injury, but Junior Stanislas returns to contention as Bournemouth make their way to Everton.

Mauricio Pellegrino will decide today what part Virgil van Dijk will play in the home meeting with Manchester United. Matt Targett (ankle) looks set to miss out, though Charlie Austin is fit and available to challenge Shane Long for a start up front.

Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Izzy Brown has returned to training this week following a hamstring injury and could be named in the squad for the home clash against Newcastle United.

Mesut Ozil looks to have a good chance of being fit for Monday night’s home fixture against West Bromwich Albion following a knee problem, but Calum Chambers and Danny Welbeck are both ruled out until after the international break.

I’ve been struggling to decide between Mendy + Mkhy or Jones + Erikson on my WC. I’d like to have Erikson, but clearly Mendy has much more attacking threat than Jones, but what does that equate to in points?

I decided to find out, and in the process have invented NIPS.

NIPS © is Notional Implicit Points Scoring (other acronyms are available). I’ve basically assumed that shots and assists get converted at a certain notional rate, and are worth a certain amount of points. By multiplying shots and chances created by conversion rate and points, we get a number of attacking points per game implied by a player’s attacking statistics. So here goes:

    Assumed conversion rates:
    Shots in box: 1/6
    Shots outside box: 1/9
    Big chances: 1/3
    Chances created: 1/7.5
    Big chances created: 1/3
I’ve also added a highly arbitrary fudge factor to take baseline BPS into account for defenders

    Points
Assist = 4 pts (assumes 1 bonus point per assist)
Defender goal = 7 pts (assumes 1 bonus point per goal)
Midfielder goal = 6.5 pts (assumes 1.5 bonus point per goal)

    Results for defenders
(attacking ppg + appearance points and CS points, add maybe 3.2 to get full ppg)
    Davies 3.9
    Alonso 3.2
    Mendy 2.2
    Kolasinac 2.1
    Valencia 1.5
    Bellerin 1.5
    Monreal 0.7
    Stones 0.7
    Jones 0.6

    Results for midfielders
(attacking ppg + appearance points and CS points, add maybe 2.2 to get full ppg)
    Salah 5.8
    Erikson 4.9
    Mkhy 4.2
    Choupo-Moting 3.8
    Ritchie 3.0
    Atsu 2.5

    TLDNR:
    - Results seem reasonable for defenders and midfielders
    - Davies and Alonso are mental
    - Attacking full backs are likely to outscore centre backs by 1 to 1.5 ppg
    - I should choose Mkhy and Mendy, or maybe Kola depending on how I feel about their clean sheet chances
    - HULK ME!

        I get
        4.2 + 3.2 = 7.4
        vs
        4.8 + 0.6 = 5.4

Morata suffers a little though from reduced minutes in his first 3 games.

Your results are presumably only for attacking points.

But if you adjust the defenders' points for actual clean sheets and goals conceded and yellow cards so far then the new order would be: Davies, Valencia, Alonso, Mendy, Kola & Jones, Stones, Bellerin, Monreal.

The current order in simple points per game is: Davies, Valencia, Alonso, Kola, Mendy, Jones, Stones, Monreal, Bellerin.

The problem with all of these types of stats is they either assume a conversion rate or ignore the conversion rate ... goal chances that are not scored are worthless, players that do not convert their chances are worthless ... it's like a snooker player that gets the highest break in a frame but loses the frame.

I think people should watch games more often and make a judgement on a player rather than make up or rely upon these sorts of stats

Glad you liked it Monkey. Its actually really opened my eyes on the attacking fullbacks. 1.5 ppg extra is a LOT, and way more than i expected.

you know Jesus minutes will be limited so why you consider him as (C)? Kane will play 80+, great underlying stats and just unlucky so far. Goals will come. There is a reason why he's the most expensive player in the game.
If you dont' want to (C) him there's probably no reason to keep him in your team...

yes you are totally right, thanks for making my mind clearer ! if he blanks, might be back on the Kaku next week !

      same issue for me.

I think it has to be kane given you know he will play the majority if not all the game

I did the same mistake last week. I will just go captain Kane since all my trades have gone bad this week. So will just keep the team as it was last week. Might captain Morata though because of Stokes defence this gw.

It seems Carroll are popular to be picked as starter this week. May I know the reason?

Home to Watford, if you can't play him in that match when can you

Watford are a very good team this season, i think you're underestimating. Either way i'm playing carroll because of bad options in defence

He's on corners, team is playing well and a decent fixture this week.

set pieces, home fixture. If you don't play him in this game when would you ever play him?

perhaps never - he is bench fodder. It's bizarre reasoning because Watford have been solid and threatening with the exception of the City game

What's suggesting Jesus is going to be rested? Started every game this season, nothing to suggest he needs/is going to get a rest?

he played 90 on tues, that is the reason people suspect it

    REPOST
My friends have invited me to an H2H league scoring starts from this week should I make a new account for it? Gives me like a WC to start again and as previous things wont matter
Also I have 0.6 less team value but that is settled because I have Krul in place of Gomes here

Rate this power packed fwd lineup team :
    Elliot
    Jones Naughton Dunk
    Mikhi Brady RLC Salah
    Kane Kun(C) Lukaku

    Subs: Foster; Caroll, Cedric, Mbemba

    On my WC btw!

    Naughton/Mhki/Chicarito >> Walker/Ritchie/Vardy

Changes to happen in the next 2 weeks unless something g changes drastically.
