Burnley claim a narrow Monday night victory over Newcastle in an uninspiring match which rewards investors in the Clarets defence.

Here’s the Scout Notes from the final encounter of Gameweek 10…

Pope shines once again

Many Fantasy managers went into the Turf Moor clash hoping for clean sheets all round, with Newcastle United’s goalkeeper Rob Elliot the most owned player on show as part of 26.4% of squads.

But it was his opposite number who caught the eye.

Nick Pope has made six starts for Burnley since replacing skipper Tom Heaton against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 4. Over that time, Pope has made 31 saves, gathering seven save points and six bonus – more than any other FPL goalkeeper.

Another five saves accompanied last night’s display, as Pope picked up two bonus points via Burnley’s fourth clean sheet of the campaign.

Priced at 4.5 and with encouraging fixtures to come (sou SWA ARS bou lei WAT STK), Pope sits second in our current Watchlist rankings, just behind Elliot, the 4.2 option. He looks the go-to candidate for those looking to spend more than the Magpies stopper.

Indeed, Pope and Elliot work surprisingly well as a pairing, offering effective rotation until Gameweek 20.

Mee excels in Clarets back four

It was Ben Mee who picked up the maximum bonus points from Monday’s shut-out.

The centre-back top-scored for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) with 15 and even supplied a key pass to score 32 in the Bonus Points System (BPS).

That left the rest of the Clarets back four trailing, though Matt Lowton shared two bonus points with Pope on 31 in the BPS.

Both Mee and fellow central defender James Tarkowski – also 4.5 – are in the top three defenders for CBI with Brighton’s Shane Duffy.

However, Mee looks to have the edge in the BPS having made 47 recoveries to Tarkowski’s 27. He also boasts 10 shots on goal, with nine in the box compared with his centre-back partner’s five efforts.

Stephen Ward still tops the Burnley ranks for bonus points on seven and leads the way in total BPS, though he has previously relied on open play crosses and key passes to stand out. He was subdued in that respect on Monday night, with just two failed crosses and one key pass supplied.

Little joy for Newcastle attack

Rafa Benitez will surely have concerns on his side’s failure to break down the Burnley defence.

Indeed, while the Magpies have amassed a reasonable 46 shots over the last four Gameweeks, they are the only team to have failed to conjure a single big chance – or gilt-edged opportunity – over that period.

This hardly promotes investment in their attacking assets, with both Matt Ritchie and Christian Atsu fading rapidly as fourth midfielder solutions. The pair boast just one assist apiece from their last five outings.

Meanwhile, Joselu has struggled to compete as a cut-price third striker option. He has registered five shots from his last four Gameweek starts, with just one effort on target – the rather fortunate strike against Liverpool in Gameweek 7.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

After a paltry 39pts this week from this lot...
    Elliot/Fab
    Lowe, Monreal, Walker, Bert, Jones
    Doucoure, Salah, Erik, Ritchie, Carroll
    Kaku, Laca, Abraham

2FT so Lacazette to Kane once he is back fit but who else to bring in....
    Got 0.8m.

    A Mee for Monreal
    B Daniels for Lowe
    C GroB for Ritchie
    D RLC for Carroll

    (RP - bottomed)

    A) DDG, Ben Mee, Gross/shaqiri, Eriksen
    B) Courtois, Daniels/5.0 def, Gross/shaqiri, Eriksen
    C) Krul, Mbemba, Sterling, Eriksen
    D) Pope, 4.5 def, Sterling, Sane
    E) Pope, Mbemba, Sterling, Coutinho
    F) Pope, 4.7 def, Eriksen, Ramsey
    G) Courtois, 4.4 def, Eriksen, Richarlison
    H) Krul, 5.0 def, Sterling, Sane
    I) DDG, Ben Mee, Sane, Ramsey
    J) Other combination of 1 gk, 1 def, two midfielders for a combined 25.8

Oviously DDG can become Courtois in any option

This is/would be the rest of the team:

    Elliot (xxx)
    Jones Gomez Naughton Cameron (xxx)
    Xxx Salah xxx (RLC Caroll)
    Aguero Kane Morata

I know it is not easy. But would love some suggestions.

What to do with this lot?
Got a decent 68 points last week, but still feel this squad a bit weak.

    Elliot - Foster
Daniels - Jones - Kola - Mee (Mbemba)
    Eriksen - Salah - Sterling (RLC - T.Carroll)
    Vardy - Jesus - Lukaku

    1 FT - 0.8 ITB

For one GW. Didn’t lose TV or a transfer.

Stupid if you transferred him out tbh

        1. Pep says

Stupid in hindsight but if Lacazette and Morata and Kun had scored a brace it would have been a lol at Kane keepers.

I kept him, RLC played WestHam, I figured he had a good chance of returns and I don't don't have a ft. Worked out for me. Could have easily worked out very bad.

I got lucky. Sellers got unlucky. It's not a LOL at anyone.

Yeah if you bought him at 12.7. Those of us who had him at 12.4/12.5 would’ve lost 0.3 million for the sake of one brace and now faced with the dilemma to get him back in this week.

Also, we would’ve wasted 2 transfers and wouldn’t have been able to put other fires out of our team. For e.g. get sane or Abraham this week.

No brainier imo. He was never gonna be out long

If you bought Kane at 12.5 and sold when he was 12.7 on Friday (for 12.6). Kane now priced 12.6
              No TV issues there...

Many sold Kane for a hot though and don't have WC like you so they got screwed basically. I'm not defending either side, just saying it could have gone either way. Don't get why people lol at eachother on an internet forum.

Yeah I agree completely. It wasn't my intention to start a debate - just wanted to highlight that it works both ways, and is entirely dependent on each person's situation. In hindsight probably should have just kept quiet...

Clearly we're not going to agree 😉 I don't consider what I did a waste but for some people it won't have worked out, appreciate that. But it entirely depends on each person's team and current situation

I brought in Morata who I wanted long term anyway, and scored 3 points more than any of my bench. WC-ing over IB so not concerned about stacking up FTs - my 1FT will be used this week to bring him in (at the price I sold for) for Jesus who I was looking at getting rid of anyway

It is a ridiculous comment but saying keeping was a bad move is a ridiculous comment too. I kept him cause I didn't wanna hit him out and hit him back in. Decided RLC was adequate cover and that to me was a sensible decision. If it hadn't worked out, my logic was still correct and I'd make the same move again..

Quick question. I used my Free Hit last game week but I haven't carried over my free transfer? When I check my game week history it says I made 0 transfers so surely I should have 2 free this week?

I know, with recent positive developments in regards to Kane's injury, many of us are rushing to put Kane in our teams and giving him the armband.
But just a thought......Kane, of course, has to play against Madrid, but will Poch risk playing a perhaps-not-yet-fully-recovered Kane against minnows Palace? Would it be stretch to suggest that Son or Llorente might start?

Could get an international injury so he misses the Palace game and can be rested for the England friendlies but I suspect Kane will want to play Palace and then prove his class against Brazil and Germany.

No chance. He’s fit he starts. The 2 games he’s missed Spurs have lost. They need him. Can’t afford to drop points against palace.

Kane loves a London derby as well.

            Hello again 🙂
Just wondering where you've got that from? Fplstats has him at -12.8 and falling... Although I suppose if he's unflagged that would reset to 0

Once he’s unflagged, people will start getting him in. Especially when all the other similar priced strikers have tough fixtures. All traffic to Kane.

              He’ll rise for sure

That’s the mitigating factor here. The sooner that flag is removed, the sooner he will rise in price.

Will he be u flagged immediately if he plays vs Madrid or will they wait on ambiguous press conference from Poch to decide whether to unflag him or not?

And will his price be locked if he's unflagged?

    Thoughts on FT this week?

    pope, Elliott
    stones, Jones, ward, Davies, mbemba
    salah, silva, richarlison, RLC, Carrol
    kun, kane, vardy

    1.5itb

barring injuries/Kane recovery am thinking of upgrading mbemba to Daniels to give me a good bench, then downgrade Davies following week and use the money in midfield.

vardy, stones and maybe even Richarlison on my hit list after that

    what would you do? thanks

It's up to you, but for me one of the most annoying things about this game is to pick the wrong player to bench.

I learned this lesson two seasons ago with Alli (away).

Also, I believe a Top6 team's 5.5+ defender will outscore all three of those cheap midfielders.

Your better on the bus then not.

If he's fit for Real he will be my captain vs Palace.

I'm just wary of getting on the bus while it's still in the depot and having its route and driver changed.

We all would like Kane to be ready, fit and firing for Palace because perhaps we're not sure about other captain options, but that doesn't take away the uncertainty that Poch and his medical team will have about losing him for a longer period.

What if he's rushed back for Real Madrid tonight? Surely, all concerned would rather he have the next 3 days training and recuperating. I guess we'll have to see how it goes.

I have the money ITB to do Jesus > Kane but I'm not going to rush into it.

For me if he trots out to play Real and trots off looking grand he gets the armband it's that simple.

I'm not overthinking this he's in my team anyway and I was happy to hold if he's was going to be one week and that's looked the best decision for my team.

Don’t want to sound nosey or anything but I had a quick look at your team and you’ve only owned Kane for GW 3? You need to get on that bus ASAP because your rank is hurting

That's true. I try and play the game without the most expensive player in the game as I tend to vary my captain picks. It simply hasn't been working this season and I'm struggling big time.

I don't do myself any favours... sometimes it's the smugness of Kane owners like he's some sort of comfort blanket that means I do something different!

No question about it though, Kane is the standout captain option this week. Im just keeping my powder dry until after the Real Madrid match.

Don't tell me you're the Spurs physio? If you are then I'll listen to you. Up to that point you have a 12.x player not playing last Saturday, potentially not playing Palace. He also has to come through a very hard game yet v Madrid with a recent injury. Sellers can watch this game nice and relaxed about it.

Nobody sane doubts he is one of the best players to own (the clue is in the price) but the fact you could try out another big striker (or take the opportunity to buy a cheap one and feed money into midfield, without worrying about a points loss) was justified. People doing it will likely have left money back to get him ONCE ALL IS CLARIFIED, which will be after Poch presser later in week.
