Burnley claim a narrow Monday night victory over Newcastle in an uninspiring match which rewards investors in the Clarets defence.

Here’s the Scout Notes from the final encounter of Gameweek 10…

Pope shines once again

Many Fantasy managers went into the Turf Moor clash hoping for clean sheets all round, with Newcastle United’s goalkeeper Rob Elliot the most owned player on show as part of 26.4% of squads.

But it was his opposite number who caught the eye.

Nick Pope has made six starts for Burnley since replacing skipper Tom Heaton against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 4. Over that time, Pope has made 31 saves, gathering seven save points and six bonus – more than any other FPL goalkeeper.

Another five saves accompanied last night’s display, as Pope picked up two bonus points via Burnley’s fourth clean sheet of the campaign.

Priced at 4.5 and with encouraging fixtures to come (sou SWA ARS bou lei WAT STK), Pope sits second in our current Watchlist rankings, just behind Elliot, the 4.2 option. He looks the go-to candidate for those looking to spend more than the Magpies stopper.

Indeed, Pope and Elliot work surprisingly well as a pairing, offering effective rotation until Gameweek 20.

Mee excels in Clarets back four

It was Ben Mee who picked up the maximum bonus points from Monday’s shut-out.

The centre-back top-scored for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) with 15 and even supplied a key pass to score 32 in the Bonus Points System (BPS).

That left the rest of the Clarets back four trailing, though Matt Lowton shared two bonus points with Pope on 31 in the BPS.

Both Mee and fellow central defender James Tarkowski – also 4.5 – are in the top three defenders for CBI with Brighton’s Shane Duffy.

However, Mee looks to have the edge in the BPS having made 47 recoveries to Tarkowski’s 27. He also boasts 10 shots on goal, with nine in the box compared with his centre-back partner’s five efforts.

Stephen Ward still tops the Burnley ranks for bonus points on seven and leads the way in total BPS, though he has previously relied on open play crosses and key passes to stand out. He was subdued in that respect on Monday night, with just two failed crosses and one key pass supplied.

Little joy for Newcastle attack

Rafa Benitez will surely have concerns on his side’s failure to break down the Burnley defence.

Indeed, while the Magpies have amassed a reasonable 46 shots over the last four Gameweeks, they are the only team to have failed to conjure a single big chance – or gilt-edged opportunity – over that period.

This hardly promotes investment in their attacking assets, with both Matt Ritchie and Christian Atsu fading rapidly as fourth midfielder solutions. The pair boast just one assist apiece from their last five outings.

Meanwhile, Joselu has struggled to compete as a cut-price third striker option. He has registered five shots from his last four Gameweek starts, with just one effort on target – the rather fortunate strike against Liverpool in Gameweek 7.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

My attack is currently such a pile of injury and rotation risk that I don't want to touch it because I know as soon as I do I'll just want to reverse the transfer.
With that in mind, is Fellaini>RLC or Carroll a good move? It'll help ease the pain of having half of my big hitting players getting benched again, through injury or rotation...

I know it's Everton, but would Kenny be a good shout at 4.3 until Coleman is back? With Koeman gone it's clear that Martina won't play anymore.

Suppose it depends if Unsworth or Dyche gets the job?

Or just wait until they are out of Europe to see if Holgate is guaranteed right back?

Jesus to Kane looking good although having so many budget defenders in a back 4 looks an odd way to allocate funds, rather risky seeing as the point of a back 4 is to better access premium defenders!
The team looks better than mine by a long shot anyway though, so I can't really judge much 😉

Is it worth buying a midfielder in the 5.0-5.8 range? I'm thinking it's better to spend that money on Monreal or Trippier and having a strong back 5 instead.. The other 4 defenders I have are Daniels, Jones, Luiz & Otamendi.

I love a strong defence, and agree generally about value, but (a) yours is already strong and adding a good 4/5 like Mee might give you more flexibility throughout the squad, and (b) it does seem that Gross has value in that bracket too. Just don't get impatient if he blanks for a few weeks. Also, not sure what the stand0out defender is in that bracket ...

Although Aguero could score plenty against arsenal, from GW12 onwards Lukaku could be essential and Morata is cheaper allowing some funds for mid/defence. So long term Kane, Lukaku and Morata best option imo.

Lukaku won't ever be essential. Has yet to score 2 goals a game and he plays for a manager who values results above all else.

Morata not looking very good since his injury. But Chelsea have good fixtures.

Aguero is the best fantasy option by far in the premier league, but his assurance of starts is a problem.

I would say Lukaku 100% but others will disagree...

Aguero by far is a bit of a stretch - that's coming from someone who had an 11.5 million captain on his bench last weekend.

Until he gets a run of games again he'll never be essential in my eyes at his current price.

That looked like Lamela on spurs training video. He's not even in UCL squad!

Does anyone have a worse transfer history?

I always feel like my team is better after transfers, but the points always disagree with me hahaha

I estimate that the following transfers have cost me 86 points*:

      GW3: Iwobi > Cork = -8
      GW4: KDB > Mkhi = -13
      GW5: Bertrand > Mendy = -2
      GW5: Lacazette > Vardy = -7
      GW7: Mendy + Mkhi + Jesus > Azpi + Sanchez + Morata = -17
      GW 9: Sanchez + Chalobah > Sterling + Zaha = -9
      GW10: WC (-30)

Transfers are supposed to increase points right? I thought this WC would be the start of a new era, but it just trolled me instead hahaha. Aggression vs Patience is a battle that's hard to win.

*If I simulate the teams I'd have had without having made the transfers on a week-by-week basis - autosubs and (one) hit included - until the player was sold again, or I used the money in the bank, or WCed

Transfers only increase points if you get them right. I know this only too well !

Moral is - pick a team and do nothing. That’s my plan this week

Turns out I would make an excellent 'casual'.

Gaboniadini should have their fingers crossed that Reussia hand me the captaincy again when our teams clash

I'm already FPL depressed enough without looking at my history.

Hard luck on the Schlupp punt. I have him in my Draft league.

Absolutely paralysed by indecision here.. someone must be able to suggest something good here?

      2FTs and 0.2m

      Foster/Elliot
      Jones/ Monreal/ Naughton/ Marippa/ Hunemeier
      Silva/ Sterling/ Eriksen/ Choupo/Carroll
      Kane/Morata/ Jesus

Has a real smell of early October about it...

I am losing patience with Sterling tbh . If he starts the Champions League game I would be tempted to sell . I'm not sure what you should do with the other free transfer

you're right... his 6 points last week masks the fact he didn't start.

          Could do Sterling + Jesus --- > Lukaku + 7.2 midfieder

Looks ok. If your happy, do nothing! Otherwise look at upgrading Foster or Hunem. Bench could be important again this week
