Burnley claim a narrow Monday night victory over Newcastle in an uninspiring match which rewards investors in the Clarets defence.

Here’s the Scout Notes from the final encounter of Gameweek 10…

Pope shines once again

Many Fantasy managers went into the Turf Moor clash hoping for clean sheets all round, with Newcastle United’s goalkeeper Rob Elliot the most owned player on show as part of 26.4% of squads.

But it was his opposite number who caught the eye.

Nick Pope has made six starts for Burnley since replacing skipper Tom Heaton against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 4. Over that time, Pope has made 31 saves, gathering seven save points and six bonus – more than any other FPL goalkeeper.

Another five saves accompanied last night’s display, as Pope picked up two bonus points via Burnley’s fourth clean sheet of the campaign.

Priced at 4.5 and with encouraging fixtures to come (sou SWA ARS bou lei WAT STK), Pope sits second in our current Watchlist rankings, just behind Elliot, the 4.2 option. He looks the go-to candidate for those looking to spend more than the Magpies stopper.

Indeed, Pope and Elliot work surprisingly well as a pairing, offering effective rotation until Gameweek 20.

Mee excels in Clarets back four

It was Ben Mee who picked up the maximum bonus points from Monday’s shut-out.

The centre-back top-scored for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) with 15 and even supplied a key pass to score 32 in the Bonus Points System (BPS).

That left the rest of the Clarets back four trailing, though Matt Lowton shared two bonus points with Pope on 31 in the BPS.

Both Mee and fellow central defender James Tarkowski – also 4.5 – are in the top three defenders for CBI with Brighton’s Shane Duffy.

However, Mee looks to have the edge in the BPS having made 47 recoveries to Tarkowski’s 27. He also boasts 10 shots on goal, with nine in the box compared with his centre-back partner’s five efforts.

Stephen Ward still tops the Burnley ranks for bonus points on seven and leads the way in total BPS, though he has previously relied on open play crosses and key passes to stand out. He was subdued in that respect on Monday night, with just two failed crosses and one key pass supplied.

Little joy for Newcastle attack

Rafa Benitez will surely have concerns on his side’s failure to break down the Burnley defence.

Indeed, while the Magpies have amassed a reasonable 46 shots over the last four Gameweeks, they are the only team to have failed to conjure a single big chance – or gilt-edged opportunity – over that period.

This hardly promotes investment in their attacking assets, with both Matt Ritchie and Christian Atsu fading rapidly as fourth midfielder solutions. The pair boast just one assist apiece from their last five outings.

Meanwhile, Joselu has struggled to compete as a cut-price third striker option. He has registered five shots from his last four Gameweek starts, with just one effort on target – the rather fortunate strike against Liverpool in Gameweek 7.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Sod’s Law those who get Kane in this week he’ll get injured again, two games in five days. You watch!

Those bringing in Kane will he get your armband?

Will obviously wait on Champs Leagues games, but seriously tempted by Kun against Arsenal.. or have I learned nothing these last couple weeks?!

Who to sell for Kane this week if he’s fit?

    A) Jesus (ARS)
    B) Vardy (stk)

Yeah, my plan is the same. I want Kane Kaku for after IB with Kaku © for NEW BHA wat, not sure I could consider not having him for that any goal would decimate my OR

Yup can’t go without them after IB. Most nailed strikers in the league.

Although I do want to keep the better option between Jesus or Vardy this week. Think if Jesus doesn’t start in CL he’s the one to keep for one more week.

    Foster (Myhill)

    Alonso Walker Davies Fernandez (Britos)

    Sterling Silva Atsu (Mooy) (Chalobah)

    Kane Lukaku Hernandez

    1m itb.

    a) Save
    b) Hernandez > Abraham

thinking I wanna save so I have 2 FT over the international break where I can bring in jones for Davies and Richarlson for Mooy.

    Thoughts?

Hegazi or one of Morgan/Simpson/Chilwell? I feel like Leicester will keep more CS than WBA and have better fixtures coming up but Hegazi seems like a big set piece threat while Morgan & Simpson won't get many attacking points and not sure how secure Chilwell's place is

I think probably saving and 2FTs next week is the best idea. Worrying to have Trippier and Davies as rotation risks, Sane too (despite consistent recent starts), and Kane still a doubt. You have to wait till Friday really, but saving might be the way to go.

My thoughts exactly I'd like two ft for next week to bring in kaku and maybe jones even if it means a hit. This week I think carroll and surman can cover any injuries/rotations that affect my team

Beyond this gw11 is the dreaded international break. Better make sure you do into it with 2ft as it's the last one till march or something and it's going to be ANARCHY from gw12 onwards till Jan. Those who don't plan meticulously will be left for dead and the shrewd managers will prosper. A few tips below:

    1) Make sure your bench is strong. There will be 10gws from 18th November - 30th December. That's one game every 4 days PLUS factor into this the champions league and Europa for the sides like City Pool Utd spurs Arsenal and Everton. There WILL be rotation and LOTS of it.

    2) Make sure you ATTACK this period like the lion attacks a Giselle after stalking him for hours and not like a apprehensive timid mouse who stcruffles around savagings for bits of food. You know what's coming so plan ahead, cast your nets, play the numbers and you will rise up the ranks.

    3) This is not a time to take punts. That time is later on after January once squads are settled. Pick the most nailed players you can. It's all you can do. They may also get rested. Take it on the chin and move on you made the right decision.

    4) Avoid sheep herd mentality that is prevalent in here. It's a slippery slope and its best avoided.

Why wouldnt he play? He is either injured or he isnt - the hamstring is either recovered or it's not. I dont see why Poch not play Kane against Palace, in view of their home struggles.

Kane had a minor grade 1 hamstring injury - He looks to have recovered from it. I expect him to play the whole match against Palace and at least a sizeable chunk of the Real one.

Surely bench him for Palace and only bring on if Son and Llorente don't do the business (I think they will personally). That's not to say I am not concerned he may start and get a hatfull.

how you figure that? once you get a hammy injury, and even if its fully healed, your more susceptible to it going again than before the injury. think of all that running he has been doing this season, both with the ball and without, he would be a grade 3 or 4 waiting to happen.

A grade one, if fully recovered, is not going to morph into a grade 2 or 3. And he clearly is recovered or he wouldnt be training and in contention to start.

i play football with a physio,. fully recovered for a hammy no matter what the grade means you are fully recovered but for a few weeks after the injury, maybe a month. you are still susceptible.it will have to be montiored. that muscle is now weakened. look at how many players get injured with same injury again after hammy injuries

    b) Lukaku + Ramsay + 4m
    c) Vardy + Salah + Daniels
    d) Lacazette + Sterling + 4m

No - would mean only Silva from City but that's fine as the rotation doesn't seem to affect him

Would you play Gomez over Alonso, Davies or Jones? :/

Over Jones perhaps this week, not over Alonso or Davies. Although Davies will probably be rested for Rose anyway, and then it will be irrelevant.

not as good, but having said that i’m going to be moving those type of players around through the season depending on fixtures so by the time he goes Burnley’s may have ended

Still decent and worth their price, but probably less fruitful

It would be something I'd consider, but I don't think they would fall to pieces unless a new manager decided to completely overhaul the defence, which seems unlikely.

    Bench 1 for next week:
    A) Tarroll - home Brighton
    B) Simpson - away Stoke
    C) Kolasinac - away City

I know its a tricky one so first first five win

Carroll, probably. Maybe Simpson. Yet it's Kolasinac who may end up missing the match through injury.

Carroll as he won't get more than 2 or 3 points from that game in all likelihood , the other 2 have more potential to get more points imo

yeah but that was the only time in 10 games that he was in the points and it was against Huddersfield at home , Brighton are much more solid than Hudds imo so i wouldn't be expecting many if any goals in that particular game

Looking at bringing in Charlie Daniels during the international break for his good run of fixtures but is that just lazy thinking?

Most of us think 'Right, Bournemouth have a good run of fixtures, time to bring in Daniels.'

What are the other decent Bournemouth picks? Are there any?!

The fixtures may be good but the form isn't there for Clean Sheets. But he is a better option than say Ake as he has better prospect of attacking returns.

The way I see it, Daniels is about as low risk as it gets. The good fixtures are worth the punt for a 4.9 million player in my opinion.

This was my plan but at the moment I'm thinking it's like bringing in an Everton defender for their good run of fixtures despite the form. So it's a hold at the moment for me. See how the look against Newcastle 1st but if they conceded then I think I'll avoid.
