Chelsea and Arsenal play out a goalless first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, which does little to ease the strain on the Blues squad in particular.

If Antonio Conte or Arsene Wenger were hoping to strike a decisive blow in last night’s cup tie – one emphatic enough to allow some rotation in the second leg – then the subsequent stalemate was about as bad as it could get.

In truth, the match wasn’t that much better and, from a Fantasy perspective, issues occurred about as frequently as decent chances.

After dabbling with fringe players in the FA Cup, both managers fielded much stronger teams at Stamford Bridge.

Conte made nine changes to the XI that drew with Norwich City, with only Danny Drinkwater and Antonio Rudiger retaining their places in a side as close to full strength as it could be.

Eden Hazard had a quiet match, mustering a single shot and creating two chances for team-mates. He now has just one goal and an assist from his last seven starts in all competitions as his 8.1% ownership continues to shrink.

More than 50,000 have sold him on ahead of Gameweek 23 and he has suffered net sales for five straight Gameweeks now.

Striker Alvaro Morata is faring little better, with only two goals since Gameweek 15. He fired three shots in last night’s tie but lost close to 200,000 owners ahead of Gameweek 23, and 100,000+ have joined the exodus ahead of Saturday’s 2pm deadline, making him the fifth most sold player to date.

In midfield, Conte partnered Drinkwater with N’Golo Kante from the start for the first time, allowing Cesc Fabregas to exert his influence further up the pitch and the Spaniard came closest to breaking the deadlock on the night when his deflected shot hit the post. Fabregas also supplied a match-high six key passes, while only Cesar Azpilicueta had more touches of the ball.

If Conte persists with a 3-5-1-1, the 3.4% owned Fabregas should be allowed to continue in a more advanced role. That would make him a viable alternative to the pricey and out-of-form Hazard and Morata to cover Chelsea’s very favourable upcoming fixtures (LEI bha BOU wat WBA).

Andreas Christensen also had two opportunities to break the deadlock. The classy Dane returned to the Blues three-man defence and impressed in his own half, but was guilty of a glaring second-half miss from a Fabregas corner. His first Chelsea goal is long overdue.

The problem for managers trying to tap into the Blues’ assets is their hectic schedule.

Should they see off Norwich in next Wednesday’s FA Cup third round replay, they will have played six more matches in all competitions by the end of this month, with Champions League action to come in February.

The second leg of the EFL Cup tie takes place on Wednesday, January 24, and is so finely poised that both sides will surely be at full strength once again.

As a result, the two league fixtures that bookend it could well involve bouts of rotation from both managers, although Arsenal’s early exit from the FA Cup does allow Wenger a touch more breathing space.

Chelsea travel to Brighton and then host Bournemouth either side of the semi-final, while the Gunners entertain Crystal Palace before travelling to Swansea City.

Arsenal, meanwhile, were without Mesut Ozil who missed out last night with a minor knee problem, while Wenger also opted to leave Alexis Sanchez on the bench. That was a decision that lead to inevitable speculation surrounding the Chilean’s future, with Wenger forced to stress post-match that there was no connection with a potential January move to Manchester City.

“I thought I would bring him on after an hour, I knew we had to defend more and he could make the decision in the last 30 minutes. It was nothing to do with transfers.”

Alexandre Lacazette, Alex Iwobi and Danny Welbeck formed the Gunners’ front three, although Ozil, if fit, and Sanchez would be expected to replace the latter pair for Sunday’s trip to Bournemouth.

The north London outfit are very likely to be without Jack Wilshere at the Vitality Stadium, though. Post-match, Wenger offered this update on the midfielder, who was forced off early in the second-half:

“He has an ankle sprain and the first look at it was not too bad, but of course for Sunday I think he will be short. I do not know how long he will be out. It is a shame to lose him when he is such good form and it was by blocking the shot that turned his ankle and it’s his good ankle so I am quite positive”.

With Sead Kolasinac, Nacho Monreal and Laurent Koscielny all missing out through injury, Wenger retained the same back-three that started against Chelsea in Gameweek 22, as Rob Holding and, in particular, Callum Chambers, impressed alongside Shkodran Mustafi.

Ashley Maitland-Niles once again caught the eye at left wing-back, and his performances continue to suggest that, when fit, Kolasinac may struggle to find his way back onto the teamsheet.

Guys I have 7.3M in the bank and I don’t know what to do with it! Please help and any reasoning would be really appreciated. My personal favourite is C but Im worried I will struggle to fit in Aguero/Salah next week.

    A) Quaner to Aguero
    B) Richarlison to Lingard
    C) Loftus Cheek to Lingard
    D) Quaner to Lukaku for just this gameweek
    E) Save transfer

    My team is
    Courtois (Pereira)
    Jones Otamendi Mee Ogbonna (Gomez)
    Son Arnautovic Richarlison Sterling (Loftus)
    Kane Firmino (Quaner)

I would be tempted to save - and then use the 2FTs (and perhaps a cheeky hit) to restructure, bring in Salah and Aguero etc.

A "mini wildcard" if you like......

        Ba ha ha! Amazing.
        Upgrade Rich to Salah
        Firm to Aguero
        And Mee to Alonso.
Or Son to Salah dependant on budget.

A tricky one - but I would probably go with B.

If Aguero doesn't work out, you can pretty much choose anyone else to replace him. If Firmino's output dries up in the absence of Countinho (as stats suggest they might), you would struggle to replace him with anyone worthwhile without multiple transfers/hits.

DDG and Jones is a bit of an overkill imo

as far as not having Kun at this moment in time without Jesus around is very risky

also not sure about mustafi ...perhaps you can fit in ramsey in MF to cover arsenal?

Tempted to do Vertonghen to Alonso -4.

Spurs defence has looked vulnerable and the Leicester match looks good for attacking points. Currently don't have any Chelsea players.

    It's a punt - but a worthwhile one?

Its more than a punt.. you basically get a midfielder that gets defender points when he scores. I got him in before xmas for a hit and haven't looked back

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What to do a about Chelsea and Arsenal players?

Both teams have a good run of fixtures. Both have players with strong Fantasy pedigree.

But with a blank a strong possibility in GWK 28 and both sides's key players often falling flat when least expected are they really worth investing in.

What players do you own or are looking to own among these two teams?

Is Alonso on his own the best way to tap into Chelsea?

Are any Gunners worth investing in during January, given the speculation around their player future?

    Will Morata ever score again?

    1. MTPockets
      8 years, 7 months ago

No Ars unless Ramsey recovers, and then probably post-blank.
Will keep Alonso but Morata likely going next gw unless he has an amazing game.

I have only Christensen from those two.

I wouldn't mind Alonso and might get him (though it would wipe out the ITB for Firmino>Aguero)

However, it's not just 28, there's also a reasonable chance that Chelsea have a second blank in GW31

I wouldn't bring in any more Chelsea / Arsenal assets now ................ with the exception of Mahrez if he shows up at Arsenal: I could see him hitting the ground running and he'd be worth a hit IMHO

Rolling with 3 Chelsea at the moment! (Chris, Alonso, Haz), I think the double up at the back is probably the best way to tap into their fixtures though. Hazard isn't one of those players you can jump on and off really, as his points returns are so unpredictable (like Kane in that respect). So if you have hazard, hold, but if not I wouldn't rush to bring him in.

Arsenal have too many team sheet doubts and too much general unpredictability to be a consideration at present. All their players at all price points have rivals from other teams in better form.

I have Hazard and have to stick to and believe in him as a differential... I cannot upgrade him to Agüero (except with a -8) and there is no one else I am interested in and do not have...

... ie except Alonso. He is a midfielder and an absolute must in this game.

As for Arsenal, no need to get anyone at all. I only had Ramsey for a while but then he was injured and will be again. I will not get them in even a DGW.

He is owned by 8% only and if you look at his fixtures you will easily see why he is the player with highest expected points on "rate my team" for the next 6 weeks. That does make him a differential.

Alonso is probably the only one at the moment. If Willian was starting i'd have him at the price he is but sadly his starts are too unpredictable. Hazard is so frustrating to own (though i dont thankfully!) Every now and then he pulls a blinding game out of the bag, and then you get ~5 weeks worth of blanks!

As for Arsenal, Rambo is the only one i'd consider when he returns.

No value in Arsenal except Ramsey and the guys too injury prone imo. And Alonso is the only Chelsea player worth having at the minute, but boy is he worth it 😀

Alonso and Azpilicueta are 2 of the 3 best value defenders in the game. Strikers don't make it anywhere near the top of the table and everybody owns (or owned) the midfielders who do (Salah, Sterling, Richarlison, Gross).

It's absolute madness to not own both these players and adjust your formation accordingly.

I wouldn't touch Arsenal, Hazard or Morata. What's the point, there's so many defnders offering premium scores and what equates to a moderate value

only owned Kola for 6 GWs (6-12) not had any other Arsenal this season. Probably my lowest Arsenal ownership since started playing 10 seasons ago. No interest in Arsenal assets.

Have Christensen over Alonso which really hurt over Xmas with his illness. Biggest factor in dropping down in the top1k.
Took out Haz for Son which paid off but not sure I want him back atm. Not Chelsea are playing well enough (FPL) do justify attacking assets. When the occasionally go big tend to share the points.

City biggest concern, Got 3 atm which puts squad pressure on for a blank. Lot of cash tied up in Sterling (in at 7.8m)& Ota (in at 5.6m) in particular.

am curious at Barkley and what impact he has on other players.
Bought in as No10 and could start to be a factor by end of the month.

Planned to transfer Ozil in this GW as my premium differential but he seems injured now.

Only Alonso and Sterling now, will bench both, no problem.

The midweek after the Carabao Cup Final is clear, so how likely is it that there will be blanks in GW28?

Hatty on the cards for Morata

I'm not a member, but without a doubt, Morata should be top of your goal imminent table!!

Sticking with Azpi and Alonso ... was almost suckered into buying Hazard again
Can't really see myself getting any other Chelsea

GW29 also sees MCIvCHE, so I'd be okay with losing Azpi before GW28

Currently have Sanchez and will see what happens - could be transferred or I would move him out for GW27
No other Arsenal appeal, their defence is all crocked and useless and I never know when any of the outfielders will play or not

Expect I will do something like GW27 Sanchez > Hazard and then GW28 Azpi > Vert and Hazard > Mahrez

I think that sometimes you create these hot topics to serve your own agenda. Not owning Alonso and probably not owning Hazard or any Arsenal players? You've decided to make the point that Chelsea and Arsenal have a blank coming and speculate that they won't perform with their decent fixtures. 😕

Very happy to keep Alonso, but won't be touching anyone else until after 28, when (especially if Leicester go out of the cup) I'll look at getting one or two Arsenal in. Ramsey might be tempting if back before then, but there are enough other options in midfield I can't see me going there.

Own Alonso... strongly considering Sanchez -> Bellerin but that’s it for both sides

Wait and see for me. I got Alonso, Azpi and Bellerin at the moment. Im considering using FH in GW28 if Both Sunday games get blank and Leicester - Arsenal will have a game in 31 (Go Fleetwood).
Arsenal has really good fixtures until end of season, but not easy to pick anyone. Ozil is the obvious one. Lacazette, Ramsey, Iwobi/Welbeck/Mhiki(?) could become good options. And lets not forget about Walcott 🙂

Morata and Alonso in my team, and they will stay there until 19th Jan unless injured.

Not looking at any others from those teams particularly in the short term

Hi lads just looking for your thoughts on the best way to use the 3.2m I have in the kitty. I have 0 FT left this week.

    Hennessy Speroni
    Otamendi Mee Gomez Kenny Daniels
    Salah Sterling Son Arnautovic Lingard
    Kane Firmino Depoitre

    A) Bring in Alonso for a hit this week for any DF? Who?

    or

    B) Firmino to Aguero next week FT

I will be buying any attacker playing BOU, from next GW.

Arnautovic will come in for either Son/Alli OR Andy Carroll comes in for DCL.

Following GW, Alli/Son goes for Hazard.

How does this WC team look?

    Ryan Adrian
    Alonso Jones VVD Mee TAA
    Salah Sterling Lingard Richarlison Albrighton
    Kane Kun Ayew

    Any changes anyone would make?

    Cheers

I don't like the LIV def double up. Id rather spend less on Dummett than add TAA, for instance.

And Id rather have Davies than VVD right now - and actually swith in two GWs, when Rose MIGHT be back and SPurs fixtures get tougher.

Here is mine, for what it's worth:

      Foster Adrian
      Alonso Jones Davies Stones Dummett
      Salah Sterling Lingard Arnautovic Albrighton
      Kane Kun Quaner

Davies to become VVD (or maybe Maguire but doubt it) in one or two games.

alonso for courtois....perhaps ogbonaa to adrian

alli? since you got kane you prob dont need Ali. plus you are missing Lingard

DCL has no future at everton especially with the arrival of Tosun. free up some funds there if you need by getting tosun
