Our cup competitions are edging closer to their conclusion with just eight teams now remaining in both contests.

The seventh round of the Fantasy Football Scout cup in the main went by form, with those with a higher rank prevailing.

This included victory for the contest’s highest placed manager, Elvarus, who is 159th in the overall rankings and saw off 1,679 placed Scoutcaster Az. This high flying victor has another tough match in the quarter finals when he takes on the next highest placed remaining manager, David Slade (rank 1,455).

Former FPL winner Tom Fenley’s 13,516 ranked team edged past Double Blue, who is 47,144 places behind him, to set up a last eight battle with Brakeff (rank 25,911), who was one of only two round seven giant killers after comfortably easing past 2,481 placed Roonatic 85-50.

SaxilbyGaribaldi is the other lower ranked manager to beat the odds in round seven, when his 21,579 placed side took out 3,004 ranked Catdeeleyisgorgeous. He will have to rip up the form book once again when he takes on TH14, who is 14,124 places above him.

The last quarter final looks to be a closer affair, with just 5,874 places separating ezdmanx (rank 2,125) and POLSTER (rank 7,999).

The results from the Fantasy Football Scout seventh round can be found here, while the quarter final draw is here.

The Members Cup quarter finals also sees the two highest ranked managers square up to each other, when 770 placed The Albatross faces 1,034 ranked Root.

Two other remaining managers are placed in the top 5,000 with Albertini (ranked 1,485) surely the favourite against 73,50 ranked rrcmc, while 3,651 placed graslauk encounters rama96ab (rank 67,811).

The other tie sees Gloria Kanchelskis (rank 27,122) go head to head with community veteran Fitzy. (32,539).

You can view the full results from the sixth round of Members Cup here, while the quarter final draw is here.

Since Sam Allardyce first took charge as Everton manager in GW15, Jordan Pickford (4.9m) has been the top goalkeeper in FPL, with 48 points in those 9 matches (5.3 PPG). That total betters every premium keeper’s output in the same time, including David de Gea (5.9m, 46 points), Ederson (5.5m, 45 points), Thibaut Courtois and Hugo Lloris (both 5.5m, 37 points).

With great fixtures coming up for Everton (WBA/LEI/ars/CRY/wat/bur/BHA/stk), it might be a good time to look at investing in their fantasy assets. Everton have improved defensively under Big Sam, with 10 Goals Conceded and 4 Clean Sheets in 9 games, but Pickford has also picked up 8 save points and 10 bonus points over that run, which are a large part of why he’s scored so well.

Here’s a look back at some key statistics over the periods where Big Sam has managed a Premier League side in the last few seasons:

2012/13: West Ham (38 games) – 1st in Saves, 10th in Goals Conceded, =8th in Clean Sheets, 18th in Possession, 16th in Goal Attempts Conceded, =7th in Big Chances Conceded

2013/14: West Ham (38 games) – 4th in Saves, =9th in Goals Conceded, =6th in Clean Sheets, 19th in Possession, 19th in Goal Attempts Conceded, =13th in Big Chances Conceded

2014/15: West Ham (38 games) – 4th in Saves, 8th in Goals Conceded, =15th in Clean Sheets, 13th in Possession, 16th in Goal Attempts Conceded, =7th in Big Chances Conceded

2015/16: Sunderland (30 games) – 1st in Saves, =13th in Goals Conceded, =12th in Clean Sheets, 19th in Possession, 19th in Goal Attempts Conceded, 13th in Big Chances Conceded

2016/17: Crystal Palace (21 games) – =13th in Saves, 10th in Goals Conceded, =9th in Clean Sheets, 17th in Possession, 11th in Goal Attempts Conceded, 7th in Big Chances Conceded

2017/18: Everton (9 games) – 3rd in Saves, =8th in Goals Conceded, =2nd in Clean Sheets, 17th in Possession, 18th in Goal Attempts Conceded, =11th in Big Chances Conceded

You might wonder at the relevance of all this, but I think it demonstrates precisely why Big Sam is the perfect manager for an FPL goalkeeper. One reason is that, whilst his teams have generally struggled in the bottom half of the table, they tend to finish in the top half in terms of Goals Conceded and Clean Sheets.

On top of that defensive solidity, though, his goalkeepers regularly rack up Saves, as Pickford has done. We usually associate Saves with poor teams conceding a lot of efforts on goal, which means they also concede plenty, and is less than ideal for fantasy managers. Allardyce’s teams, however, seem able to consistently marry Clean Sheets with Saves. How do they do it?

Well, I think it’s all about the way Big Sam organises his sides. It’s a style which bears many similarities to Burnley’s, who have produced FPL goalkeeping royalty in Heaton and Pope over the last two seasons. The keeper gets plenty of Saves because Big Sam’s teams concede plenty of shots, as you can see in their Goal Attempts Conceded numbers. However, quantity does not always equal quality, and Allardyce’s teams have fared significantly better in the Big Chances Conceded stat than Goal Attempts Conceded in each of these six seasons.

That’s a sign the team is sitting back, inviting pot-shots from range, which don’t seriously harm the keeper’s prospects of a clean sheet, but do boost his FPL points with ‘cheap’ Save points. Something that’s also worth mentioning is the low possession figures of Big Sam’s teams, which normally hover around the 40% mark. That’s another symptom of this style, sitting deep without the ball, but also reflects the direct passing Allardyce likes to employ. Because of that, the defenders make fewer passes, less accurately, lowering their BPS scores, reducing their chances of picking up bonus, and boosting the prospects of the keeper in turn.

This is a timely post as I’m currently pondering my GK situation. Thanks. With Burnley looking less solid at the back, and Heaton’s return presumably on the horizon, I’m looking to move on from Pope ahead of a tricky fixture against United.

Other options I’ve been considering are Karius (cheaper than Pickford, good fixtures, more likely to keep clean sheets, confirmed number 1 - but ties up a Liverpool slot and they may bring in another keeper), Courtois (all but guaranteed clean sheets over the forthcoming fixtures, expensive, minimal chance of save points) and De Gea (feel I may have missed the boat and can always go Jones).

Heaton back in training today. Think it's still Pope's spot to lose for the foreseeable future, but with 2 FTs and nothing else pressing, I'm looking at the same move for Pickford this week.

I only have one FT, but still think this is a transfer that could pay off - particular if Heaton is back in training (thanks for the link). I do still wonder if Karius’ could be the better option (Liverpool will surely keep enough clean sheets to more than compensate for the lack of save points)... I kind of wish Everton hadn’t suffered that mauling at Spurs, as that is sowing a seed of doubt.

I am generally happy with the Fabianski/Pickford duo. Still wondering if i can save up some money from Fab to another GK, but its not pressing.

          Very persuasive.

I’ve fabianski and like him for similar reasons - lots of saves in a team that invites teams to shoot.

But you make a strong case for swapping.

Have DDG, difficult to swap right now on the back of DDG's 3 cleanies v Pickford's 3 x 2pt'ers. Will keep an eye on it though as I'd love to free up that extra dollar.

I need convincing after the 4-0 v Spurs...having said that, that game does also underline the whole point. Conceded 4, yet still got 2pts (6 saves).

Great post. But Everton is and should be a more attacking teams. They're not the WHU, CRP or SUN team that he managed in terms of offensive quality. Besides I dont think the Everton club, nor the fans will settle for a mediogre - bottom 12-spot in PL. They have always tried to compete for the top spots. The question is, can they do that if he plays the way he has done under other inferior clubs? Not likely if you ask me. Burnley have done well so far, but im certain they will drop in rank over the next course of games. It could be a great punt, but im not 100p convinced just yet

Have been looking long and hard into this, here's the issue I have.

Firstly, I feel some kind of Utd cover is near on essential.

Therefore, for me to move from DDG to Pickford then means I'd need to upgrade say Kenny to Jones. DDG + Kenny 10.2m (sale value) v Pickford + Jones 10.6m. Are those 2 players 0.4m (+2 transfers) better than my current 2?? Probably not.

If however, you have Jones already and say Pope or Fabs, then yeah, Pickford is a really really appealing option.

          mee cresswell ake hegazi duffy
          The template 5
          the template 2

Currently my defence feels shoddy. Got 2 FT. Considering:
          1) DDG+AKE-> Pickford+VVD then next week cresswell->maguire
          or
          2) same, but maguire in first

Cant afford the template defence due to a verry start of season...

Losing DDG cuts you from covering United, something I feel that is very important to have considering the ownership there. (& number of CS of course) You could tap into one of Liverpool's cheaper defs who should benefit from VVD's arrival.

Nice post. Why is nobody mentioning Schmeichel as an goalkeeper option? From what I can see his stats are very similar to Pickford's. I am trying to decide between the two. Leaning more towards Pickford as may like to bring in Maguire soon.

I thought about him, but the extra £0.1M over Pickford was critical for me; plus my next move is probably to get Maguire. There are no other Everton defenders I like.

Great research LUDO but I disagree with some of the logic you mention.

A PK save is a chance encounter and it skews statistics in favour of Pickford. I do agree that he returns Bonus points when Everton keep a clean sheet but currently the probability of Everton keeping a clean sheet is somewhat HALF of Chelsea or Man Utd. Sadly those 4 points for a CS are far more reliable/consistent than outlier incidents e.g. PK save.

This season more and more top managers have invested in Premium keepers instead of the Heaton/Foster buy and forget mentality of the last few years. Pickford is an example of that mentality whereas most top teams right now are investing in at-least 2 premium defenders + a premium keeper.

I wished i had the clarity of mind to convince myself before opting for Pickford, but sadly I did not.

          Cheers.

He didn't save a penalty in the period I looked at here - he did in GW14, though, the last match before Allardyce took over. The logic I mentioned is that Pickford as many points under Allardyce as any of the premium keepers, and there are strong reasons to believe he will continue to be a good pick.

United have kept 0.58 clean sheets per game, Chelsea 0.53 per game, and Everton 0.40 clean sheets per game under Allardyce. You might argue that Everton have overachieved in reaching that number so far, but I don't agree that United or Chelsea are twice as likely to keep a CS.

Nothing has changed about premium keepers this season - big teams are likely to keep more clean sheets, as they always have. Keepers at clubs like Everton under Allardyce won't get as many points that way, but they can provide value through save points and bonus. There's nothing inherently better about one type of keeper than the other, you just have to judge each pick on their own merits.

What do you think, who could get more points this week, Son or Mahrez ? I have Son and 2 FT and ideally I would sell Pope and Son for Pickford and Mahrez, but I'm 0.1 short. So I will either sell Pope or Son this week, but I am not sure is selling Son a risk maybe, or not, considering his output away from Wembley ? I know he is in form, but so is Mahrez, I'm really having a dilemma between those 2 players.

His form is my "concern", but I can see a few goals in the LEI-WAT match. I will sell him probably after the Southampton match, so maybe Pope to Pickford is the way to go for me this week and roll over the other FT.

Arsenal IS a championship contender as a club. They havent been because of bad management and lack of ambition but they are a championship contender, that´s why this is sad and poor for a club like Arsenal to have only one winger and he is a young player.

That´s funny but it´s sad for a club like Arsenal and his fans. Iwobi is a young talented player but has to evolve in some aspects and it´s short as only wing option.

Pope to Pickford (-4) worth it?

With Christensen, DCL, Niasse, Wimmer & GW28 blank approaching I’m running short on transfers and don’t think I will have a free to deal with this.
Don’t plan to play the wildcard before GW30 also. It will probaly be around 32-33 or after.

If both derbies are blanks in 28, how many players will you be missing as of now and how do you plan to shorten that in the next few weeks? Transfers? FH?

For me its 5 atm (would of been 6 if I went for Kun) so not that far off. Lingard and Christensen the prime candidates for getting the hook.

For me it’s 6 at the moment. I will probaly reduce that to 4 because I don’t want to sell Jones, Alonso, Ota, Sterling.

Will play with 10 men and improve my bench to handle the blank.

DDG, Azpi, Alonso, Ota, Sterling and Lingard

Also went for Firmino over Kun to avoid issues
Lingard is going to be sold for Mahrez (This week or next)
DDG is not a problem - 2nd GK is currently Adrian
Would probably swap Azpi for a Spurs defender ... especially given MCI v CHE in gw29

Could be a bench of DDG, Alonso, Ota, Sterling and play the other 11

Reckon its a bit easier with those than have DDG over Jones and a playing 2nd gk. Azpi out is decent considering you already have Alonso after their green run of fixtures ends.

The more I think about it the more I can see the merits of doing Eriksen to Sane this week but an extra blank in a few weeks is making me lean towards Mahrez or keeping Eriksen.

Got good money for Walcott/Ox. Clearly he sees something in Iwobi that perhaps the rest of us don't.

Sanchez was a black swan event with the contract running down, but getting Mkhi in return won't be miserable...

He has had a tough time the last 1-3 years, it's a shame it will affect his legacy as for 15-20 years he has been amazing for the British game.

I am a neutral but hope they win the Europa League for his sake.

Don't think the transfers he has made since summer are an issue (other than letting Szczesny go for £10m leaving us with Cech on his last legs and 5'6" Ospina), rather the ones he hasn't.

The lack of planning is surprising. Need to make additions at CB, defensive midfield and on the wings at least - preferably young players who can grow and replace aging/outgoing players. What good young players do we have? Bellerin and arguably Iwobi?

Thought one thing Wenger could add to his legacy would be leaving us in a better position than Fergie left United but it'll arguably be even worse.

It seems that young players have never been able to establish themselves as first names of the team sheet - if they have been at other clubs they probably would have and would have developed

It seems crazy the Ox is more that likely to establish himself in the Liverpool team but couldn't get a whiff at Arsenal

FPL has ruined the FA cup for me, I've ended up rooting for all the Premier League sides as opposed to the underdogs like any self-respecting football fan!

Although often I guess the best Championship side is better than the worst Premier League side anyway.

                Salah

Had a few captain fails and reached the stage where I would've had a higher captain score if I just chose Salah every week, now I'll just go Salah.

                    I'll try to explain

People sellin Kun before New as they realise that he is poor pick with poor form. If you take away his pens it looks like he is not really worth his money. Also Jesus may return earlier so Firmino with no Cou and Liv on fire is much better considering his price.

That's the way I looked at it (plus gw28) .... put simply Kun's history this season has a lack of big points

                      There are only 3 double figure scores, wat - 20, CRY - 11 and BOU - 16
Those 3 scores account for 40% of his total score
