Though every Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season has its ebbs and flows, it would certainly feel that the tides are changing with greater frequency than ever this term.

Just a few short weeks ago, driven by a strong Christmas schedule and the outstanding form of premium defenders such as Marcos Alonso and Nicholas Otamendi, numerous Fantasy managers (myself included) found themselves stacking up at the back – hoarding high-priced defensive assets from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, and Manchester United while making financial sacrifices further up the pitch.

Yet on the back of one of the most disappointing defensive Gameweeks in recent memory – in which a suite of premium defenders either failed to provide returns or, in many cases, feature altogether – the notion of trimming funds from the backline is becoming increasingly popular.

Moreover, a glance at the upcoming fixture list demonstrates huge potential for a number of so-called “smaller” clubs to provide strong clean sheet prospects over the medium term.

With this fact in mind, this week’s Technical Area will be assessing the defensive capabilities of these sides based on their recent form and upcoming schedules.

We’ll also appraise a number of budget defensive options in an effort to identify those lower-priced players with the potential to match bigger-budget rivals during the season’s run-in.

Define cheap. Coleman back, Baines should be back for Watford and it's anyone's guess what CB's will play. Mangala, Williams, Keane, Holgate and Jagielka all playing for 2 or 3 places.

don't think Lingard needs shifting this GW with new. Son should start, and he's obviously better at home so probably worth keeping him as well. Alonso and Ota both have decent fixtures, as does Ederson. That's a difficult one, maybe Son to Walcott if you want as Son might have limited minutes with Lucas Moura likely to get some gametime soon

Going to save a FT with this lot although I'm strangely tempted to do Otamendi - > Mawson 😆

    DDG

    Jones Otamendi Alonso

    Sterling Salah Shaqiri Walcott

    Kane Firmino Wilson

    Elliot: Gross, Mee, Robertson

8 blanks in the last 10. Costs 5.1. What am I missing? I really don't get why people are bringing him in. Because of Mark?

Good fixtures coming up, always a goal threat demonstrated by his goal & assist in the last three

      Not for me. Expensive.

      Go for Fab or Fern.

    Adrian
    Wimmer - Otamendi - Alonso
    Salah - Ibe - Walcott - Sterling - Shaqiri
    Kane - Aguero

    Elliot - Quaner - Schindler - Duffy

    1 FT, 0.0 ITB

    A Wimmer > TAA/Mariappa
    B Schindler > Naughton
    C Save FT

    Better option going forward?
    A) Pope B) Fabianski

Thoughts on a cheeky Pope to Fabianski -4 move? Bookies favour the Swans this gw and it's thought Swans have a good chance of a clean sheet so great time to switch over if Fabianski is the better option. Free will be tied up getting Kane back next gw so it's now or never.

    1) Good move 2) Bad move

      I wouldn't take a -4 to remove Pope.

What’s the point? If he gets a clean sheet you’ve only broke even?

If Fab is the better option up until wildcard then now is the perfect time to do it due to the factors I mentioned, so the aim would be to break even this gw

Next, Kun is great at home, NLD tends to be low scoring

guys im trying to interpret this.....

''Stephen Ward will be included in the squad, although he lacks match-fitness. "If we need him, he's available." Tarkowski [groin], Wood and Marney [both knee] "are going well." Bardsley is ruled out.''

does that mean tark is still recovering and wont feature, since he only mentioned ward being in the squad? would really like to have k.long as an option

      Why Long? What about Taylor...

I'm no Burnley fan but as I understand, Taylor was first option at LB, while Ward was his sub. But he was injured in GW1, Ward played, scored and pushed him out of first team. We will have to wait and see what happens. I have Taylor also.

    Should I:

A: Keep Richarlison and play him against West Ham
B: Use my two frees this week to get rid of him for Ramsey

I think I’ve finally decided. Although will wait to fully confirm until after FA rnd5.

    WC GW33
    BB GW34
    FH GW35
    TC GW37.

I’m hoping most will use free hit in 31 and it won’t actually be that good with a lot of poor teams playing.

Yeah, I'm pretty much sold on the same - my only issue is that my team might be so rubbish after GW31 that I end up WCing straight afterwards. Figure I can still set up a nice squad for BB in 34, though.
