Scout Notes – Aguero Goes Big

A four-goal blast and the season’s top Gameweek score from Sergio Aguero lights up Man City’s 5-1 win over Leicester City, bringing joy and anguish to Fantasy managers far and wide.

What a difference a week makes.

Some 16.59% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers – close to a million overall – captained Sergio Aguero to a dispiriting two-point haul at Burnley last Saturday.

It was a decision compounded by Mohamed Salah’s double and 15 points the next day against Spurs.

Only 13.14% had handed the armband to the Egyptian, and it was clear that they weren’t going to make the same mistake when today’s deadline came around.

Salah is this Gameweek’s most-captained player, with 1,265,000+ (22.06%) hoping for big things from tomorrow’s trip to Southampton.

Some will have doubtless transferred their allegiance from Aguero, who was captained by 778,000 (13.56%) managers ahead of today’s outing.

Keeping faith in the City striker produced a season-best 21-point haul as he fired a second hat-trick in four Gameweeks – and his third of the season – in the demolition of the Foxes.

Salah is outstanding, but he’ll do well to get anywhere close to Aguero’s tally, which could be hugely significant for many overall rankings and mini-leagues.

Aguero has now scored nine goals in six Gameweeks and has 11 from his last five home matches.

Those home comforts are extreme – he’s scored 66 points in his last five matches at the Etihad Stadium, with a mere 16 from his previous five away fixtures.

Aguero is now up to 7.3 points per match, second only to that man Salah among outfield players, although his biggest haul arrives just as we’re forced to re-assess City’s assets.

Guardiola’s men now play three times before they resume Gameweek action – in Basel, at Wigan in the FA Cup and against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final.

That not only offers the risk of injury and suspension, but there’s also the added scenario where if Wigan take City to a replay – not out of the question if Guardiola fields a second string XI – then the Gameweek 28 fixture with Arsenal will be postponed.

Aguero is already attracting big interest in the FPL market – he is second for transfers in currently – but, in truth, investing now is a risk.

The reality could be that his window may have passed as Guardiola indicated in Friday’s press conference that Gabriel Jesus might only be ten days from a return.

Certainly, having been pushed into six successive 90 minutes since Jesus’ injury at Crystal Palace, we can expect some rest for Aguero once the Brazilian returns. A rotation policy will likely resume, particularly if Aguero is seen as the favoured option for European ties.

De Bruyne & Sterling chip in

While Aguero dominated, the efforts of City’s key midfield assets should not be overlooked.

Raheem Sterling was the fourth most sold player ahead of the Gameweek, with 105,000+ managers moving him out.

He punished the doubters with a goal and has now produced a goal or an assist in eight of his last 10 starts.

Kevin De Bruyne, meanwhile, provided a hat-trick of assists, moving him to 16 for the season, which is four more than any other player.

He has 45 points from his last five home matches and his 13 points today was his eighth double-figure haul of the season, six of which have come at the Etihad.

The Belgian has managed just one goal across the last nine Gameweeks, but eight assists over that spell is a decidedly pleasant second prize for his 22.9% ownership.

The only dampener on the day was City’s defence, which continues to falter.

With just one clean sheet from their last six Gameweeks now, Nicolas Otamendi – the top owned defender in the game (31.3%) – is looking increasingly vulnerable.

His plight is not helped by the fact that he started his 15th successive match in all competitions today, with a rest surely beckoning soon.

Otamendi was sold by 50,000 this week, and those sales will likely pick up now the fixtures are stiffening, with Arsenal and Chelsea up next for Guardiola’s men.

Four in four for Vardy

Leicester briefly threatened to make a match of it when Jamie Vardy scored for the fourth successive Gameweek – the first time he’s managed that since his record 11-in-a-row spree from the Foxes’ title-winning year.

And Riyad Mahrez finally made an appearance following his transfer window shenanigans, starting on the bench before coming on after 61 minutes.

The Algerian has lost 469,000 owners since his non-transfer tantrum, but Leicester’s schedule is strong enough for him to start rebuilding bridges promptly.

The Foxes play only two of the top six over the remaining 11 matches, although they will miss Gameweek 31 if they can see off Sheffield United in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

I'm thinking about riding out GW31 and get as many in when we know who's playing. WC after that and FH 35

Most people are surely going to use their FH in GW31, so is it best to counter that and use it in 35 instead?

I think the FH chip is invaluable and needs to be used right. Could catch you right up, or bring you right down

I'm definitely not using it in 31

Already have pickford delof wally salah firmino with confirmed fixture's. Should get 3 or 4 more come 31

WI'll be fun using all 4 chips in the final weeks

That’s what I’m thinking. I can see 31 being a total let down with the lack of fixtures.

I’ll be happy to have 7/8 players and then WC in 32 in preparation for BB in 34. FH in 35 and then TC in 37

At least 6 games and 3 of the top 6 teams playing in 35 - not sure why you would even need it that week when most will have a pretty good team anyway and can roll over transfers

Since FPLdiscovery only gives info about top 10k captains before the GW games begin, I went ahead and calculated the percentages of the current situation:
    ********************************
    Current top 1k captains:
    Aguero 58.9%
    Salah 23.7%
    Kane 8.1%
    Hazard 3%

A punty captain: Giroud, Lingard, Lukaku all have 1 capper each in top 1k
    ********************************
    Current top 10k captains:
    Aguero 50.46%
    Salah 29.06%
    Kane 10.29%
    KDB 2.72%

A punty captain: Ibe, Can and Rooney all have 1 capper each in top 10k
    ********************************
    Current top 40k captains:
    Aguero 44.52%
    Salah 32.33%
    Kane 11.6%
    KDB 3.08%

    ********************************
So Salah cappers all over the place waiting to win their spots back! Dunno if the updated stats are useful but I found them fun to look at.

They had to slide backwards making way for all kun cappers.. so probably if we look at top 100k, it will be flooded woth salah caps

This is a mid GW analysis I think? More people in the top 10K captained Salah than Aguero, it's just that their captain hasn't played yet, so they are sitting outside the top 10K until then.

Nice one. He was one of their main attacking threat. Unlucky not to get a goal or assist but his all round play is worth keeping for the long run.

Why would you think of transferring to Eriksen when Walcott has no blank in 31 and has good fixtures vs Eriksen who might be rotated due to all the cups Tottenham are still in?

I didnt bring aguero in and i feel sick about it,but it was the right decision at the time.Firmino had scored and assisted against city so i couldnt jusify taking him out especially with his fixtures.I wasnt prepared to dump Kane as we know on his day he can explode against anybody and i felt it was a waste of two transfers and the only other way would have been to take a -8 and take out players that were performing at the time.I also felt that Burnley away would be a tough fixture and that with Leicesters recent defensive record they would be a tougher nut to crack than they were.Up to half time yesterday it seemed i was justified in my decision. Then Puel changed formation at half time and Schmeical decided to give City a couple of gifts and the rest is history.
Well done to all those that did bring kun in and especially those that put the armband on him !

Yep, that's how I feel about it. Kane was never going for and weighing up the number of transfers and hits involved, I felt the risk wasn't that great.

Getting Kane and Aguero was the only option I looked at and, I was up for it but ended up 0.1 short and then settled on the move back to Hazard for GW25. That was my error, I should have made the earlier transfer but that was for Vardy out and he's more than pulled his weight for me.

Some bad decisions, but as I said in a previous preamble, sometimes we can get away with them. This time that one got punished, though I'm still wondering, if I had Aguero pre-GW27, whether I would have captained him over Kane or Salah. I'd have to be honest and say probably not!

I think u also have to take into account yhat u probably would not have captained salah in either of the past 2 weeks where he ended up outsourcing kun by 8-6 and 15-2

OK this doesn't apply to u because u captained hazard but applies to salah capers of previous weeks without aguero

I strangely didn't even really consider captaining him, with CL looming (and maybe overrating Leicester) I thought they would get 2/3 goals max - I decided Hazard, Salah, Aguero was my captain order. Not even the most biased Kun-captainer can deny that a couple of those goals were fortunate, but that's how it goes sometimes (Salah has scored plenty similar).

I knew with great certainty that my ML leader 30 odd points ahead of me had done Kane>Aguero as I've been tracking his balance. That made it more reason for me to C Salah as I assumed he would to. He captained Kane who I was afraid of not having. Salah C seemed like the percentage play

Right decision not to bring him in this gw but Kane->Aguero was well heralded a few weeks ago as likely to be profitable with Kane's tough fixture list, so wrong decision made earlier
