Scout Notes – Mane On The Money

Sadio Mane hits a hat-trick as Liverpool beat Porto 5-0 in a Champions League Round of 16 rout.

Another day, another Premier League team who will have the luxury of resting key players when the second leg of their European tie comes around in March.

Not that Liverpool have too many worries surrounding fatigue at the moment anyway.

The Reds will play just twice before they face Porto again on March 6 – over the same period, Man City have four matches.

Even so, coach Jurgen Klopp will be able to rotate till his heart’s content for that second leg, particularly with a huge Gameweek 30 clash at Man United coming four days later.

With no FA Cup match to play this weekend, Klopp has taken his troops for warm weather training before they resume league action with a visit from West Ham.

Another home match, against Newcastle, follows in Gameweek 29 before Porto visit Anfield three days later. That clash with the Magpies looked to be a rotation hot-spot but that’s no longer the cash after Tuesday’s convincing win.

The trip to Old Trafford will then make it three matches in a week for Liverpool, marking out the Champions League fixture as the obvious place to rest key assets, despite Klopp’s post-match insistence that the tie is far from done.

“I am too long in the business to think anything is sorted before the final whistle. We owe our supporters at Anfield a 100% performance and that’s what we want to deliver.”

Those supporters should forgive him if he fields a weaker team, while Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will be positively demanding it.

Liverpool players are becoming increasingly attractive options, with an excellent schedule involving just three tough encounters – the Man United match, a Merseyside derby at Goodison Park and a trip to Chelsea – over the final 11 Gameweeks of the season.

The Reds are also one of only four teams currently guaranteed a Gameweek 31 fixture. They’ll entertain Watford on a weekend otherwise hugely disrupted by the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Form, as well as fixtures, are on Liverpool’s side at present.

Mane’s hat-trick last night caught the eye, although it followed a patchy four-match run in the league in which he’d managed just one assist.

His manager, understandably, was delighted at the winger’s upturn in output.

“He gave the right answer. We met on the pitch after the last game and I said to him: ‘Finally, you are back’. Tonight he showed it again.
He was always important, he was always fantastic for us even in his ‘not that good’ moments. That’s real quality.
If you are not at 100% but still involved in goals that’s really important. Then it will come, if you keep working really hard like he did”.

Mohamed Salah’s goal in Portugal was his 30th in all competitions this season, while Roberto Firmino made it 4-0 on the night to back up a domestic run involving three goals and two assists over his last five starts.

The Brazilian is currently in the top 10 for Gameweek 28 transfers-in, with 52,000+ new FPL managers.

Mane could now prove a hugely effective differential for the forthcoming period. With Salah and Firmino such fixtures in many FPL squads, it seems likely that Mane’s 7.3% ownership will merely simmer. Those with Salah and Firmino are perhaps more likely to fill their third Liverpool slot with a defensive option, therefore overlooking Mane for the spell leading into Gameweek 31.

Virgil van Dijk will likely be that defensive acquisition. He is enjoying only a modest increase in ownership despite the fact that Liverpool have now kept three clean sheets in their last four matches in all competitions.

The 5.5-priced Dutchman is also an obvious candidate to replace Man City’s Nicolas Otamendi (6.4) in many FPL squads.

Owned by 30.6%, the Argentine is due a rest – he’s started all but one league match this season – and City have managed just one shut-out in six Gameweeks. They are also likely to have a blank Gameweek 31 unless Wigan pull off a major surprise in this weekend’s FA Cup tie.

It would be equally surprising if more managers don’t buy into Van Dijk before Gameweek 28’s deadline next Saturday morning, particularly as the make-up of the rest of the Reds’ defence is far from settled.

Klopp opted for Dejan Lovren at centre-half last night, but has used Joel Matip just as frequently in recent weeks, while Joe Gomez returned from injury to be used a second-half substitute. That could well end Trent Alexander-Arnold’s three-match run as the starting right-back when West Ham visit.

Alberto Moreno was fit enough for the bench against Porto, yet Andrew Robertson, who has started the last five Gameweeks, remains in the driving seat for the left-back berth.

The Scottish international was excellent yet again last night and offers as much attacking threat as Moreno, but without the Spaniard’s defensive shortcomings.

Meanwhile, keeper Loris Karius has now started the last six matches in all competitions.

Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner and substitute Danny Ings all provided assists in Portugal, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana watched the match from the bench and Emre Can had the night off.

many people going for vvd simply due to alonso/ota and the fact they have pickford already right? to me karius seems the better option

Interesting you say that, what's your thinking ? Karius is cheaper but VVD is a goal threat and BPS magnet. Im looming for a new keeper if Adrian blanks in 31 and Karius is an option but I don't want to block a move for VVD (or maybe even Mane !)

i still dont think vvd is nailed on....and might yet be rotated, plus klopp has stated already that karius will start every game now. with a good run of fix coming id be happy to play karius every week

They didn’t spend 75 million on a def to put him on the bench and rotate him. He’s there to lead the defence and help make the other rotating CBs better players.

Really looking forward to the FA cup this weekend, such an added interest watching them/following results as an FPL manager as well as a footy fan. Ive always enjoyed the FA cup but since getting hooked on FPL the games have taken on a whole new meaning.

Lots on here take the opposite view but I'm with you. The FA Cup final day is always the highlight of the season imo.
I do think the league cup should be reduced to remove all PL clubs though and make it an EFL cup

It meant a lot more before the premiere league made the league more important and more lucrative . Maybe I'm living off nostagia..but now you are lucky if you get full strength teams out until the very end . Late 80s early 90s will never be bear for me . I guess a lot of you were not about then so hard to compare

My most memorable being the 87 final. Has a spurs fan it wasn't the result I wanted but the build up and everything meant it was a full day to remember . On both ITV and BBC. Unless you witnessed it it's impossible to understand it was a tradition..now it isn't for me

    Pope
    Alonso Duffy Jones
    Sterling Salah Shaqiri Wally
    Kun Kane Wilson
    Elliott Wilson Kenny Ogbonna
    0.8itb 2ft

    Very tricky.
    I'm considering...
Kun Jones Lingard to Firmino VVD Eriksen (-4), but it means continued bench headaches and losing Aguero.

Tough to answer, I would go for it.

With Jesus back soon Aguero will get rested, go back and look at Pep's comments from last weeks prem press conference, he would like to rest Aguero, which will obviously happen in a prem game.

Can see VVD + Eriksen outscoring Jones + Lingard so yeah

Is winning FPL all about captain choice?
I've had a look back through the game weeks of top players. They seem to always hit the likes of aguero/kane/morata even when they score braces or hattricks.

Success seems to be rooted our captain doing well and the rest of your team ticking over with assists and a few goals or odd clean sheet.

Given this, would it be worth having the following all in your team, with the rest just stocking fillers, given these are the main contenders for captain:
    Salah
    Kane
    Aguero
With honory mention for sterling and firmino given their value?

    1. the snazzy viking
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 2 months ago

why have 3 captains when you can just captain Salah every week, and have the rest of the team being amazing

      1. Cityzen Kane
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 2 months ago

To cover the possibility of getting it wrong. Having them in your team is better than not, if others around you captained them, and salah has an off day and you capped him

        1. the snazzy viking
          • 7 Years
          6 years, 2 months ago

I am inclined to agree with that actually

Reasonably high-risk in going without a few certain options eg. Aguero, Kane, etc. even if you wouldn't have captained them. Just owning them will give you the rewards/reduce the deficit

          1. Cityzen Kane
            • 7 Years

Exactly. Last week I capped salah but owned aguero, firmino and hazard. All did well. So it helped keep agreed arrow cause many around capped aguero.
Realistically by having both I was behind them by 8 points

Still have to pick the right one each GW. People at the top have had a bit of luck in this regard. Thus why they are at the top.

True. But a lot of time we pick our captain based on "the best we own" but others are better options. If we had kane/salah/aguero we have choice without using transfers to get in the best option each week?

That's kinda what we all do.

That said, I'm losing Aguero now Jesus is back in contention.

Listen mate, let me tell you a secret - the reason they're up top is because they got lucky with their captain picks, and had an amazing squad 😉 Trying to cover all the captains is a waste as it leads to a worse squad. To get up into those final few echelons, you need a measure kid luck and that's a fact.

I think a few good options emerged in midfield that are good value, and so they allow 3/4 big hitters.
I guess with Otamendi and Alonso on the slide we're going cheaper defense too

That's just the thing - we think we see these trends, but thriufh a combination of luck and skill and top 100 will always be ahead of the game. Perhaps value in defence and attack is the new thing. Perhaps it won't be. To get up there, though, you need to get all these 50/50 calls right

Yes yes yes , have gone through the history of those in top 20 over the last 4 seasons or so and always they have a very high ratio of "hitting" Captains
However it's about having those big hitters in at the right time really. As with the rest of the team get the timing of the mix right and you win , good luck trying

I guess I'm thinking of this cause I've to decide aguero to kane this week or go against my plans and try work keeping both.
Means losing hazard but I'm thinking fixtures difficult and I don't captain him.
Food for thought I guess but very hard to decide

Depends on what you are chasing OR or winning ML ?
If chasing by a fair amount would not think twice - dump Kun and even Haz if you find other "exciting" combo's to get you there. Time is running out you need to start moving up , or falling of course but wtf

I'm 200points ahead in one ML and 120 in the other.
            So not too worried.
Been bouncing around 15k to 25k last few weeks and its OR I care about.
If I wanted to secure ML would get kane(c) plus firmino as that's what most go with.
But i guess I want to get max points but also learn more about climbing rank for next season.
            This is my fistful season

Well cant believe how pep can stop kun from getting golden boot after his 4 goals and benching him for Jesus. Just cant se that happening. And on an another note cant believe people are saying getting a class player like mane is a kneejerk and even saying its just Porto. Well watford whu and Newcastle in next 4.Its just a poor argument

I think Aguero would rather win the Champs League than the Golden Boot. Its also World Cup year Aguero will want his minutes to be managed.

Aguero isn't as sturdy as he used to be mate. Makes sense that he would prioritise one comp over the other if he can't safely play both.

How many times has Pep confused us by not resting players when we think he should, and vice versa? He's made many strange decisions this past year. Relying on him is not the greatest feeling in the world

He was tactically confused in that match. Puel wanted something of him that messed with his normal settle of distribution, and when he made that fatal substitution at half-time, Kasper panicked. Go on a Leicester forum if you didn't watch the game, look at the match review.

*sigh* Puel tried to change formations with a sub but got it bungled. Man C took advantage as a result. He also likely told Kasper to chasms his style of distribution before the game as Kasper is known for long, driving passes up the pitch, but in this game was a lot more subdued and ended up kicking it neither a safe distance away or a safe distance close by. Really, go read a match review.

Not just to do with Kasper. I suppose it all was a bit disjointed. Coming are several situations unlikely to repeat themselves which made the four goal haul possible:

1: Puel made an error in substitution at half time. It involved a change in formation which didn't quite work out due to who he subbed in and out, positionally it left things like Albrighton in central midfield which was a disaster for the whole team and allowed Manchester City to absolutely dominate the game from there on.

2: I don't have the time to properly explain this one so I'll make it brief.
                        • Kaspers normal style of distribution: punt the ball really long, slightly innacurately. Allows attacks to happen quicker, good for counter attacks, what he's confident with
                        • Kaspers style of distribution in that game: Changed. Much shorter punts, by still not proper passes to the defence. Instead, it resulted in the Man City midfield getting the ball much quicker and in an offensive position. Caused him to lose confidence, also leading to many more attacks from Man C then should gave occurred.
                        • And, that shocking giveaway pass of course.

Got to go now, if you want stars or a match review, go Google it
