Scout Notes – Arsenal Canter To Win

A productive week in Europe for Premier League teams concludes with a regulation 3-0 win for Arsenal against Oestersunds FK.

The Gunners closed in on a Europa League Round of 16 spot thanks to strikes from Nacho Monreal and Mesut Ozil and an own goal in Sweden.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan, with two assists, and Alex Iwobi set up the goals, before David Ospina saved an injury-time penalty as Arsene Wenger’s side kept a rare clean sheet.

The Colombian keeper was one of five changes to the team that lost in the north London derby as Arsene Wenger ditched the policy that saw him field only fringe players over the group stages. Iwobi, Calum Chambers, Danny Welbeck and Ainsley Maitland-Niles also came in. Meanwhile, Laurent Koscielny and Jack Wilshere were left at home – the  former nursing his ongoing Achilles problem, while Wilshere was a precautionary rest following his recent illness.

With Alexandre Lacazette out following knee surgery and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ineligible to play in the competition, Welbeck was Arsenal’s only available senior striker.

But he failed to impress on a night when Ozil and Mkhitaryan caught the eye.

The Armenian has started just three matches in all competitions since his move from Man United, but has now provided five assists. Ozil is another finding his form – his goal last night follows two assists from the previous four Gameweeks.

Arsenal’s schedule is likely to promote investment in the midfield pair, although the German’s 9.3 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) will require him to produce more consistent returns before managers commit – particularly if Aaron Ramsey (7.0) recovers from the groin problem that forced him to miss the north London derby sooner than expected.

The Gunners now prepare for a run-in in which a visit from Man City in Gameweek 28 and a trip to Old Trafford in late April are the only two tough tests across the final 11 matches of the season.

They will also face seven of the bottom 10 teams in the league, with four of those matches at the Emirates.

Monreal’s goal last night maintained a remarkable run during which he has been directly involved in five goals in his last six matches in all competitions (three goals, two assists) – as many as in his previous 64 combined.

But the Gunners’ backline doesn’t exactly inspire thoughts of investment – they haven’t kept a clean sheet since Gameweek 18.

Squad rotation is also a factor to consider.

Unless their rivals slip up badly, Arsenal seem unlikely to finish in the top four, meaning that winning the Europa League has suddenly become their most likely route into next season’s Champions League.

The relative strength of the squad sent to Sweden was an early indication that this is now being considered.

The comfortable victory last night should defer the need for domestic rotation for now, despite Wenger’s relatively guarded post-match comments on the subject.

“I don’t know, I don’t think I will rest. We’ll try to win the game again. Maybe we’ll rotate the players who did not play tonight and rest one or two who played tonight.”

With a Carabao Cup final against Man City to play just three days after next Thursday’s second leg, the likes of Mkhitaryan and Ozil are surely unlikely to be risked for the home tie with Oestersunds.

A Gameweek 28 fixture, again involving City, will follow on the Thursday after the cup final – unless Pep Guardiola’s side are taken to a replay in this weekend’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Wigan, that is.

If domestic rotation is to kick in, it will be from then on.

Arsenal travel to Brighton in Gameweek 29 – just three days after the Man City fixture – with the Europa League Round of 16 first legs following on the Thursday after that.

Gameweek 30’s home match with Watford and the second leg in Europe will complete a schedule involving three matches in just seven days for the Gunners.

A much-needed break could then happen in Gameweek 31.

Arsenal are due to travel to Leicester City that weekend, but that requires the Foxes to lose tonight’s FA Cup tie at home to Sheffield United.

Regardless of the outcome of that match, Wenger’s side are going to be very busy from next Thursday until the middle of March, with seven matches to play across three weeks.

If the Arsenal manager also starts tailoring his league teams to maximise the chances of European success, the only sure-fire league starter during that period – injuries notwithstanding – might well be Aubameyang.

Live games on the BBC with the terrible commentators whose commentary usually consists of the awful "added on afterwards" MOTD commentary, and Shearer and Lineker in the studio showing why Sky haven't poached them.

    (A) Son or Walcott ?

I feel Spurs' fixtures upto GW30 are a bit better. But Son didn't start the last game vs Juventus and Walcott will have game on GW31.

    (B) Chiwell or Simpson or Lowton or van der Hoorn ?

Lowton is probably not nailed, I'm afraid.

Liverpool players thought. I was pretty set on VVD BUT...

By GW31 I would guess 95%+ of top 10k will have Firmino and Salah. This in effect means that if you have those two, you don't gain ground if Liverpool's attack fires. Surely, if we expect Liverpool's attack to fire, the way we can gain ground is by adding a third attacking player? We can tell ourselves that we are already invested in Liverpool's attack, but it's not really true as whether they score well or not, Salah and Firmino's points will effectively be 'neutralised' by high ownership...

    Thoughts?

I'm trying to get the most points! I'm hearing a lot of people saying things though like 'over-investing' in attack, 'spreading the risk' by getting a defender etc. What I'm trying to say is that we're actually not invested in the attack at all by having Salah and Firm who are 'points neutral' so that logic is flawed? I'm bringing it up as a point for discussion, surely by being on this site we are by definition over-complicating a very simple game!?

Based just on gw31 Mane will probably outscore Vvd but in the bigger picture there are better options for the 3 midfield spots (assuming Sterling and Salah have cemented 2 spots) than Mane e.g. kdb, Ramsey, mkhi, Eriksen, Walcott, etc. but there isn't really too many outstanding def picks

I think it also depends on when you do the transfer. If you will triple up Pool this gw, VVD is the better option, because of other options on midfield. But if you are making the transfer gw31, Mane could be a better option for that gw alone.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Which Arsenal assets?

Given a Gameweek 31 fixture for Arsenal looks unlikely many will be shunning their players. But with bags of creativity in midfield, goals coming in defence and Aubameyang nailed on for Premier League starts are we missing out by swerving their assets.

They certainly have the fixtures to impress too - with Brighton, Watford and Stoke in their next five.

Who is considering getting them in regardless? And if so which Gunners appeal?

    1. JONALDINHO
      • 6 Years

I'm looking at getting Mkhi in before the City game. Arsenals attack is lethal at home compared to away. He already has 5 assists in 3 starts and is great for baps. Was looking at Auba but gonna wait and see how he does. Hopefully does well feeding off of Ozil and Mkhi. Could be great option for GW32 WC! Hopefully he doesn't explode against Watford though as he could be a great differential

Mkhitaryan or Ozil for me. Not convinced by Aubameyang yet, not sure I will be in time.

      • 9 Years

Not for me - don't see much value in their defenders, no room at the inn for Auba, and there are better looking midfield options at the price range of the midfielders who blank (e.g. Mahrez), even if blank's aren't deemed important.

Aubameyang being nailed for PL starts is incredibly tempting.

He’s had a mixed 12 months, but people were saying he was one of the top three strikers in Europe last season. Arsenal are flat track bullies and have incredible fixtures after City.

All we need is Billy Sharp to do a job tonight and he’s 100% in my team.

Hold off for now but Mkhitaryan could be a great buy.
      Ramsey has too many injuries.
Aubameyang will have to do a lot for us to bring him in.
I would still be slightly worried having a defender but like you say great fixtures.

Monreal keeps tempting me - his goal involvement is outrageous at the moment. Aside from that I'd prefer Mkhi - but Aubemeyang is easier to fit into my team despite the added expense. Sadly in this current state, most of us can only invest one transfer for them - or even none.

This is all dependent on how the FA cup games go which will in turn influence my GW31 strategy. However, if I decide to bring Arsenal assets in then Mkhitarian, Ramsey (depending on injury), Aubameyang, Mustafi and Monreal are all considerations.

I'm currently looking at a GW32 wildcard, which would involve getting Arsenal assets in. But before then? I'm not so sure unless they have a GW31 fixture.

They have been superb at home but very poor away this season. So the brighton away fixture doesn't appeal too much to me, plus the fact Brighton have been fairly solid themselves, particularly at home. So that only leaves GW30 home to Watford as attractive, and I'll likely be focussing on the blank by this point. If they were the only top 6 side with a good fixture that week it might be worth a 1 week punt and captaincy, but would I captain an Arsenal player this season? Its doubtful. Furthermore, Chelsea are home to Palace, Spurs are at Bournemouth, and Man City are at Stoke in GW30, so plenty of good scoring options available there, and armaband candidates too.

So it's a no from me at present. Probably worth asking this question again in the international break (pre GW32) though.

Arsenal's away form is so poor that you'll be relying on home fixtures for hope.

Every player is a punt now and the further into the Europa they go, the more risk will be of Wenger resting players as let's be honest, the season is going down the United road where it's Europa league or bust.

    A) Lingard

    C) Wilson

As a Lpool fan, I've been watching Mane a lot lately and think his end product is poor and his decision making is terrible. I haven't seen someone give away as much possession as him either. He stretches the field for Lpool and has plenty of pace but for me Salah and Firmino are far better players and FPL assets. I'd go VVD for a third Lpool option

Mane is in the best form in the league. Average 3 goals a game over the last 1 game.

And with easier fixtures to come, he will likely be given more gifts. And he gets 1 point more from goal and 1 extra for cs compared to Firmino. That may mean that he might outscore Firmino with just some pure luck 😉 He may need to score just 3 against Firminos 4 to outscore him.

Surely Van La Parra of Huddersfield has the best form in the league - 1 goal in the last 1 minute he has played - that's an average of 90 goals per game.

    I’ve a front line of

    Ayew Aguero Firmino

I’ve money in the bank to do Kun > Kane...

Should I go for Kane Kun Firmino though?

Tough call with Kun's form, depends when Jesus is back I guess. You will want Kane (C) for Hudd at home in GW 30 tho

I hardly ever see MOTD, occasionally half a game on a Sunday. I tend to go by results, stats, player history (past seasons), and upcoming fixtures, ownership and captain poll. I could prob do with the eye test but i don't necessarily think you need it a lot of the time.

Hi lads. One question for you.
If you planned to use all chips in the last 3 gw's, how would you use them? Since i'm prioritizing my cash mini leagues, i'm doing this because mine h2h league quarterfinale, semifinal and finale are in 36, 37, and 38th gw.
I was thinking tc is for double gw 37, bb 36 and fh in 38th gw.
Wc in 34th gw for the dgw.
    Would you do it differently?

    1. suddenorgan

I was thinking that but that would required all 15 players to be dgw players. With tc, you dont need that. But thanks for the reply.

          • 13 Years
          6 years, 2 months ago

well, you're likely to have quite a few DGW players already from your wildcard, you also have 3 transfers between then and GW37 to get more/tweak your team.. There may not actually be a standout triple captain candidate, whereas you should be able to find 4 players who are cheap yet will play both games in a double..
