Chelsea wing-back Marcos Alonso’s 138 points make him the most productive defender in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season.

At 7.2, he’s also the most expensive and, with 21.0% ownership, the third most popular among backline assets.

All of that has established him as a near “essential” option for many.

But Chelsea’s current travails, his own recent two-match absence and a schedule involving trips to both Manchester sides and a visit from Spurs over his next four matches have prompted a sizeable slice of Alonso’s ownership to say their goodbyes.

He’s already the most sold player going into Gameweek 28, with 119,000+ transferring him out.

Is that a knee-jerk response or a wise move to cash in before the going gets too tough?

We asked Mark and our panel of Fantasy Premier League experts – last season’s winner Ben Crabtree and runner-up Uwais Ahmed and perennial Career Hall of Fame leading lights Jay Egersdorff and Peter Kouwenberg – the latest of our Burning Questions: Do we sell or keep Marcos Alonso?

Uwais Says…

Quite simply, the answer probably lies somewhere in between.

Firstly, Antonio Conte has confirmed that Alonso should be ready to play in midweek in the Champions League. But after that, Chelsea head to Old Trafford and the Etihad for back-to-back league matches.

Although it is unwise to write the Spaniard off for returns in those matches, the fact they have proceeded to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup means that they now have a run of Manchester United (A) Manchester City (A), Crystal Palace (H) and then a blank in the next four Gameweeks.

Alonso commands a hefty price and his value has not increased significantly from the start of the season, making it easier to bring him back once sold.

However, there is also the option of holding him through Gameweek 31 and place him on the bench, knowing that Chelsea will have at least one double Gameweek to come.

Going into Gameweek 31, FPL managers should not face a challenge to raise significant funds, thereby making it viable to carry Alonso through the blank.

Other than Liverpool options, we are looking to select from teams such as Huddersfield Town, Palace, Stoke City, Everton, Bournemouth, West Brom and Watford. As a result, it should not be imperative to sell Alonso to free up funds.

Beyond that blank though, Chelsea have a very favourable run-in, and with at least one (and maybe even two) double Gameweeks to come, there is no doubt that he will be a go-to option with or without the Wildcard.

So Alonso owners could seek out better value for the time being. What is without doubt, however, is that we are almost certain to revisit the situation from Gameweek 32 onwards.

Jays Says…

What rotten luck for Alonso owners in recent weeks – nobody could have predicted his mysterious disappearing act.

It was foreseeable that maybe a rest was in order, given Chelsea’s reliance on the Spaniard, but two consecutive absences have hit us where it hurts.

I’d hope that by Gameweek 28 we will see Alonso back, with Conte already giving us his word that the wing-back will be fit to figure against Barcelona in midweek.

Assuming he is back in business, I think that his goal threat and a lack of obvious goalscoring alternatives means he’s one to keep for now, irrespective of fixtures.

With the blanks and doubles thrown up after the FA Cup ties this weekend, there are surely more pressing transfer priorities.

Peter Says…

With fatigue, injuries and possible competition for his place, it seems a no-brainer to trade in the Rolls Royce of FPL defenders for what is, in any event, a testing period of his campaign.

Throw in at the time of writing two (and probably only two!) Champions League matches and their continued FA Cup involvement, and the wisdom of that strategy appears sound.

And that’s before we get to Chelsea’s recent poor form.

Personally, I may yet retain the services of our Spanish star, as I am likely to have to choose between a combination of Virgil van Dijk and Eden Hazard or Alonso and Sadio Mane.

But I can absolutely understand why many will be looking to redistribute funds elsewhere, perhaps putting it towards an expensive front three.

It’s not that I don’t think Alonso will score points after his recent enforced break – he has three goals in away matches against Spurs and Arsenal this season and also kept clean sheets at home against Manchester United and the Gunners.

But his value is questionable.

The wing-back has the best points per match of any defender other than Man United’s Eric Bailly, but Ben Davies, Phil Jones and even Stephen Ward are close behind and demand a fraction of the cost.

Most of us will be Wildcarding within the next few weeks, at which point we will have a much better idea of whether Alonso deserves a seat at our double Gameweek table.

Before then, there are too many doubts around his pitch-time and many other demands on our funds.

So I’m advocating selling, even though I haven’t made that final decision myself.

Ben Says…

Conte’s been having a rough time with the press recently, and he hasn’t been getting too much sympathy from Alonso owners either.

Had he stated that Alonso would miss Watford and West Brom, it would have been a simple decision, with cash freed up for the opportunity of lucrative Kevin De Bruyne or Hazard moves.

Instead, it’s reached the point now where he could be sold but then play and score big.

I think I will show him the door, and concentrate funds into attacking areas.

Other than Nacho Monreal – who after Man City in Gameweek 28 has good fixtures – I’m happy to have a few cheaper defenders that I rotate, with my attack taking the priority when it comes to spending power.

But with Monreal unlikely to claim a clean sheet at City, I might just delay the Alonso exit for one more week.

He may well punish sellers. Given his attacking prowess, it seems likely that he will find the net at least once more this season.

However, I prefer to look at defenders for clean sheets first, and in three of the next five for Chelsea, that looks unlikely.

After that, we’re into Wildcard territory, so there’s little need to worry about the hassle and cost of getting him back.

Mark Says…

Alonso is a season keeper for me.

I’d never say never and perhaps if I’m short of a few bob in my Gameweek 31 plans, then maybe he’ll be ejected to spend a short time out of my squad. But, should that be the case, he would certainly be a Wildcard acquisition – most likely in Gameweek 32.

I’m not panicked by Chelsea’s fixtures. While I’m not counting on clean sheets at United or City, I’ve almost reclassified Alonso in my head as a 7.2 winger in a decent side who takes free-kicks who can also get me extra defensive points.

Chelsea may just be over their blip, with Olivier Giroud’s arrival providing a timely boost. I see them troubling a United defence that has looked fragile, while City’s run of just one clean sheet in six Gameweeks indicates there could also be some joy at the Etihad.

Above all, having Alonso makes watching Chelsea all the more bearable.

Each time Eden Hazard gets felled around the box, I know an opportunity for Alonso arises. And those free-kicks can beat any defence and any keeper.

Added to this, I just don’t think I’ll have the luxury of making such a transfer. There’ll be other fires to put out, other areas of the squad to tinker with as we lead up to Gameweek 31.

I don’t need the cash so I’ll keep Alonso and sell Otamendi.

Obviously, only if Alonso plays vs Barca 🙂

Can someone tell me why loading up on these teams for GW31 and saving the FHC for GW35 is the preferred approach?

      Huddersfield
      Crystal Palace
      Bournemouth
      West Brom
      Liverpool
      Watford
      Stoke
      Everton

Worst still, won't you be choosing these players from now and hoping they return points in GW28, 29 and 30? A Liverpool triple up feels the most appealing of that bunch.

Will BLG35 really be that bad? Statistically, more games will go ahead as we're a round deeper into the FA Cup. Arsenal and Liverpool are also guaranteed to play.

Back at the beginning of the season, many felt the FHC was perfect for a blank GW and the here we are with the biggest blank being in GW31 yet most(?) seasoned players scrambling to bring in players they wouldn't otherwise look at twice.

Surely ignoring GW31 and picking the players as per usual up to GW31, then playing a one week WC should be fine. We'll have all the information we need to judge form which is essential with these teams.

Yep, those would be the first choice for me as well.
I have Kane and I'll keep him.
If I had Son, Alli or Eriksen and be keeping them as well but I won't be getting any more ( I don't think).
That's one team and as I say, if you have 2 players then keep them.
            3 Spurs players, no thanks.

                  I think we're at cross purposes here, I'm talking about 28, 29, 30 and wildcarding in 32.
No confirmation of Arsenal having a double is there?

Anyhoo, I'm not on here shouting there is a right & wrong option, there's a fair argument for various ways of playing out the season.
At the moment I'm looking at using FT's to get 11 for Gw31 which I have planned for so I'm not in any panic but I'm happy to change plan if a better option looks available.

This is what I'm not getting! There's mediocre (at best) match-ups in GW31 and you're now preparing your team for it - yet we've been given a chip that allows us to bypass this preparation, which to all intents and purposes, is a compromised team from GW28 to 31.

I have a soft soft for Arsenal so I may well be blinkered about their fixtures 😉

Looking at the fixtures and that I'll have 3 Liverpool, 2 Citeh and Kane I'm not sure what I'm missing.
1 more Spurs player in 29 and possibly / probably an Arsenal player in 30.
Not enough to waste the FH chip which I think will have more value in 35.
I'll look again but that's the way I see it.

Thing for 35 is that the players you get in you'll want to get rid of for 37 so either you'll have to take a bunch of hits. Also, the only players I'm getting in for 31 are triple pool, Wilson, Walcott, a gk, and one or two others(such as Shaq and Bauer) so my squad will still look good for the weeks leading up to 31

Perhaps. I'm not sure Man City players will be great in a double with rotation and the league already won. Part of me wants to get the benefit of the FHC and BB chips when they're most needed. For me, that's GW31 and 34.

Agree on BB in 34 but other teams will have stuff to play for with the rest of the top 4 undecided. As for 35 it's only one game so you'd probably some of who will and who won't play

So if I understand correctly, people are looking to use the FHC as a one week wildcard in BGW35 with more fixtures the merrier? Because it should be quite straight forward to field 11 without the FHC. Especially carrying 2 x FT's in after BB in DGW34.

The chips aren't independent of each other and should be used to maximise the sum of their value rather than maximise them individually

It's so difficult to quantify. We can't just add up our scores from GW31, 34, 35 and 37 and see who got the highest. I think the GW28 to 31 period is being underplayed.

I agree you have to take 28-31 into account but I'm planning moves like Aguero > Firmino (Firmino has good fixtures in the short term) TC > Mane, Otamendi > Hegazi which are decent moves anyway given form and fixtures and Ota being a rotation risk. I already have Pickford, Mariappa(On bench), Salah, Shaq(good form), Walcott(good fixtures) and Wilson(2 good fixtures, 1 bad).

So basically you have 4 transfers over the next few weeks to get in BGW players. I'm trying to upgrade players like TC to a good BGW option without too much disruption to my team..

This will leave me free to load up on DGW 34 & 37 players when I wildcard in 33 and use the FH in 35

Sounds like one of us knows what they're doing! 🙂

I don't have my 2nd WC so maybe that is colouring my thinking; I don't want to get in GW31'ers then spend more FT's getting DGW34'ers.

Sorry I assumed you had your 2nd wildcard still. The way I see it now is that you have 4 transfers to prepare for 31 now and then 3 for 34 and only one then to prepare for 35 so to make best use of your transfers it makes sense to FH in 35. To be honest though a lot depends on what your team looks like now. If you use your next 4 transfers wisely you can own most of the big players for GW31

I have Walcott, Wilson and Salah plus 2 X FTs so I could get in GW31'ers now, but the game isn't about trying to have 11 in every GW (although that helps). I just know that we're going to ignore some high scores from Arsenal, Spurs and Leicester players because we can't get them before GW32.

If I still had my WC then I'd muddle through GW31 then prepare my team for the doubles. That makes sense. But not having the WC means I'll start getting the doublers in now and continue to play the form and fixtures, and treat GW31 like a roulette spin.

Yeah Liverpool have good fixtures for the next 5/6 bar the Utd one so getting in the likes of Firmino, VVD or Mane could be a good option while also looking at Arsenal and Spurs players. TBH only Salah, Firmino, VVD, Mane, Wilson, Walcott and maybe Shaq are the players I really want for GW31, the rest are a luxury.and using the FH to fill your team out with other GW31 players seems a bit of a waste.

Have you considered using your TC on Salah in a single GW, using your transfers to buy players that have a DGW in 34 and no blank in 35 and then FH in 37?

Having XI players in GW31 isn't vital although it is what I hope to do. Liverpool triple-up is obvious but those who have been planning for the past few weeks might have these players in their teams who have already scored points and are good value:

        Shaqiri, Walcott, Wilson, Milivojevic, Doucoure.

Having these players and maybe a defender or GK who has a game in GW31 is hardly 'loading up', it's just sensible planning and picking good budget options.

This GW, imo, isn't perfect for FH because a key component of the chip is that you get your old team back the next GW. In this case, those with their WC available will want to use it immediately after.

Your last point makes a lot of sense. I think this could be the main driver to playing the FHC in GW35.

Will be interesting to see what happens if there are a couple of injuries in DGW34. Those playing FHC will still have those players to handle going into GW36.

I have Walcott and Wilson already because they're good players. I'm just not sure I can stretch to Stoke and West Brom players for more than the one game.

The players we are bringing in now for BGW31 can easily keep up with the rest of the players who do blank in GW31.

Your post suggests we are buying useless players. Tell that to Shaqiri who I bought two weeks ago..... Walcott has lovely fixtures too and I’m sure Wilson will kick off again.

Just because these players are not playing for top 6 teams does not mean they aren’t going to return for us.

Why so defensive? The players you refer to are 4th mids, 3rd strikers. It's fine having Walcott or Shaqiri or Wilson,... I just don't think I'd want all 3 for 4 GWs.

            Not being defensive, just telling you my thought process to your questions like the one below;

“Worst still, won't you be choosing these players from now and hoping they return points in GW28, 29 and 30?”

I think they will do just fine if I’m honest, but who knows i guess.

I think Ox is a problem. Poor current use of a Liverpool slot. Move him on and it allows you to look at dropping one of Otamendi/Alonso for VVD later. Mili/Doucoure/Mooy/Chopou Moting could all be decent options.

Is Firmino a must for West Ham? Since Moyes came they have done superb against top teams and Firmino doesn't do to well against teams that sit deep!
Feel like I should get VVD and Mahrez first

Slow and not quick are completely different things. He looked fast compared to Stones vs City

he did, i saw it live, still don't think he flew by him, more so surprised him with his strength, also you very rarely see him making runs in behind the defence

Not saying he's fast I'm just saying that I wouldn't call him slow. When Liverpool counterattack you can see he has some speed.

I have FH intact (and WC) but wondering if 35 is the best option for the FH instead of 31; as that's the consensus here.

How many players would you say is a minimum to have?

If I do a FT every week I will have 8.

Is it worth doing Van Dijk for Otameni (-4) now then?

Just think about it this way. What players are you not gonna have by GW31 that you want. Are they worth using FH for? Personally don’t want to waste it on rubbish players that will probably get you 2 points anyways.

The FH chip has definitely muddied the water....
I've still got a WC, TC, FH and BB chip to use between now and the end of the season.
For those who still have the above when would be the best time to execute these chips now? When do you intend to use them?

Can easily go Alonso + Walcott > Robertson + Eriksen (+0.5). Just not sure if that's working against the grain? All chips and WC left to play.

      Pope
      Jones Alonso Mee
      Salah Sterling KDB Shaq Walcott
      Kane Firmino

      Joel Ayew Kenny Ognonna 0itb

      Do these moves or stick?

If I’m hanging onto Alonso, do I keep Haz or take a hit to get KDB, the people’s prince? I’m tempted

      0FT £0.6itb
      DDG
      Alonso, Fernandez, VVD
Salah (C), Sterling (V), Hazard, Shaq

Might just keep Alonso, he'd be a nice differential in any game against any opposition. Can't be bothered using a FT on getting rid of him, especially when he could literally get 25 points in a double GW.

Pay me back for sticking with you Marcos!!

So my plan is to work towards transferring in only players that will play GW31 over the next 4 GW which should leave me with 12 players.
      WC for GW 32
BB for GW 34 (DGW and take 15 players or 14 and Salah)
      FH for GW 35
TC for GW 37 (hoping Kane has 2 games)

Anyone else thinking the same who has all their chips in hand.

Currently at OR 60K and 50 points down in all my mini leagues so any advice/alternatitives would be appreciated.

I agree. And Leicester played a strong XI against Sheffield Utd but only won 1-0, so I wouldn't expect them to destroy their weaker opponents in the upcoming fixtures. Not getting Mahrez, when Liverpool and Tottenham have equally good fixtures and more reasons (european qualification) to fight for.
