All of Liverpool’s much-vaunted front three find the net in a 4-1 win over West Ham, while Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri impresses again as Leicester City’s in demand assets falter.

More than 1.6 million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers made Mohamed Salah Gameweek 28’s most-captained player and he responded with a third straight double-digit haul – the first time that even he has been so consistent this season.

The Egyptian scored and set up Emre Can’s opener to produce ten points, although he was denied any bonus after missing a big chance and being tackled four times.

Maximum bonus instead went to Can, who also provided an assist for Roberto Firmino’s goal. The Brazilian brought in two bonus points himself, while an assist for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain helped him to an extra point.

Firmino, who was the second most bought player of the Gameweek (161,000+), has now earned bonus in ten of the 11 matches in which he has scored.

But he’s only produced one double-figure haul in eight Gameweeks, which shows that he’s best seen as an accompaniment to captain Salah, rather than a rival for the armband.

Sadio Mane followed up his Champions League hat-trick with a first domestic strike since Gameweek 23 and he also out-shot Salah six to five to strengthen his claims as a third Liverpool option for the reduced Gameweek 31 schedule.

Some 93,000 new managers had instead opted for Virgil van Dijk, but the Liverpool defence again failed to keep a clean sheet – they’ve managed just two in eight Gameweeks. That includes a run of four Anfield matches without a shut-out, with seven goals conceded in that run.

But left-back Andrew Robertson came out with points thanks to his attacking contribution – he supplied three chances on the day and the assist for Mane’s goal to pick up a bonus point.

The Scotland international also seems to have put any fears of rotation to bed, with coach Jurgen Klopp giving Alberto Moreno just three minutes from the bench.

Since being named on the teamsheet against Brighton in Gameweek 15, Robertson has started 15 of Liverpool’s last 18 matches in all competitions – and two of those non-starts were cup matches.

On the opposite flank, Trent Alexander-Arnold has now started the last four domestic and European fixtures, but the fit-again Joe Gomez is likely to end that run at some point.

With Newcastle and Watford at home in the next three Gameweeks, investment in Liverpool assets is sure to remain high.

And as the Reds have scored at least twice in ten of their last 11 league matches, most of the interest will stay focused on their prodigious attacking talent.

West Ham appeal fading

Chicharito was perhaps unlucky to make only the bench at Anfield after producing three goals and an assist over the last four matches.

The striker made way for the returning Manuel Lanzini as Marko Arnautovic moved back up front.

The Austrian had been bought by 110,000+ for Gameweek 28, but he made it just two goals in five matches despite one of his three attempts hitting the bar today.

Arnautovic, with 5.2% ownership, remains a good differential option ahead of huge matches with Swansea City and Burnley.

But a blank Gameweek 31 and a run-in involving both Manchester sides, Chelsea and Arsenal will dampen his appeal in the longer term.

Substitute Michail Antonio found the net at Anfield, with Cheikhou Kouyate providing the assist.

Shaqiri on target

Stoke City assets aren’t exactly forming an orderly queue to be considered for our Gameweek 31 sides, but Xherdan Shaqiri continues to be the in-form exception.

The midfielder’s opener, from a Joe Allen assist, in the 1-1 draw at Leicester City was his third goal in as many matches, much to the delight of his 112,000+ new owners.

Shaqiri has blossomed under Paul Lambert, producing three goals and an assist in the five league matches the manager has been in charge.

And with a trip to Southampton and a home clash with Everton to come, there’s scope for more of the same from the Swiss international.

But back-to-back matches with Arsenal and Spurs after Gameweek 31 mean that Shaqiri’s place in most squads won’t survive the Wildcards played either in Gameweek 32 or 33.

Elsewhere for the Potters, Jack Butland’s nine saves against should have earned him hero status to go with his maximum bonus award, only for a dreadful error to ruin all that.

The keeper allowed Marc Albrighton’s cross to bounce off him and into the net for an own goal, denying Lambert a third clean sheet of his tenure.

Stoke remain the most porous defence in the league, with 54 goals conceded, but they’ve definitely tightened up under the new manager, allowing more than one goal in a match just once since he took charge.

Their schedule, however, means few managers will look past Shaqiri, who is currently the most signed player following today’s action.

Leicester pair struggle

The Potters’ new-found resilience went some of the way to explaining the blanks endured by the Foxes’ big-name players, Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy.

The pair were brought in by 132,000 and 148,000 respectively for the Gameweek, but Vardy, in particular, endured a frustrating afternoon, managing just one shot on goal.

Mahrez had a match-high six attempts – Leicester fired in 19 overall – while Vardy perhaps surprisingly led the way for chances created, with three.

Claude Puel’s side miss Gameweek 31 as they’ll be in FA Cup action, but have a favourable next two (BOU wba) and a decent run-in that could persuade many to hold their assets ahead of a likely double Gameweek 34 and perhaps even 37.

They’ll have to start delivering more consistently, though – the Foxes have drawn two and lost two of their last four matches, keeping no clean sheets and scoring just four goals.

Imagine Salah was actually really really clinical, he'd have about 40 PL goals already.

Could have had four today. It's going to be hard to not captain him again next week despite Kane at home to Huddersfield

Just that you can imagine Kane getting anywhere between 0-4 goals.

But 'only' 0-2 goal for Salah.

So it's the whole higher ceiling thing.

This whole Salah has a ceiling thing is nonsense. Just because he hasn't happened to score 3 in a game doesn't mean he won't/can't.... look how many chances he has! Plus 2 goals from him is almost as many points as 3 from Kane anyway assuming bps are even.

      1. ChampChomp

Yeah I agree with this. He regularly has enough chances to bag a hatrick from what I've seen. If he was as good a finisher as Kane he'd be scoring huge totals

He is a better player overall though and even if the team isn't playing well and not creating chances for him, he can still create chances by himself unlike Kane who needs the team to create the chances for him. That's why Salah gets more points overall than Kane. When they both have a good fixture, Salah is the player to go with.

This is complete nonsense. Salah a better player than Kane? No way. Kane does create chances for himself. He has a sharp turn of pace, quick touch to beat defence and is very clinical in front of goal.

      2. Duffy Dunk
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 9 months ago

I agree. Salah's consistent returns beat Kane's inconsistent hauls. It's also the way Liverpool play that enables Salah to get many chances.
They can break through smaller teams' defenses better than Tottenham, which usually is one of the factors we consider when picking the captain.

    8. Toby Lerone

Liverpool has already qualified for the CL quarter finals, Spurs far from it.

If both teams lead 2-0 after 60 mins, Salah will stay on the pitch, Kane might be subbed off.

Would captain Kane without hesitation if they were guaranteed the same minutes. But I think I will captain Salah.

Kane. Both are at home. Huddersfield are worse than Newcastle. Newcastle have found some form and I think Rafa will be desperate to get something at Anfield. Also, just because Spurs play Juve doesn't mean Kane won't play 90 in each game, which I think is the likeliest outcome.

    Duffy Dunk

Earlier I said that after today's results, with just 1 clean sheet out of 14 teams that played, I wouldn't have high hopes from any defenders from the available teams in GW31.
From the top 6 only Liverpool played, an easy fixture, but conceded.
The other 6 matches were between teams from positions 7-20.
Leicester and Burnley, 6th and 7th, had home fixtures that had a good clean sheet chance, but didn't materialize.
Bournemouth only managed to come back from 0-2 to draw with Newcastle at home.
West Brom.. currently no hope there.
Stoke had Butland making 9 saves (but conceding an own goal) to save them from defeat.

My point is that, even if a transfer hit for a non-blanker costs -2, I'm not convinced that any of the defenses available for GW31 can be trusted to make up for those hits. I was planning to bring players like Butland VanDijk Ake Schindler, but I'm not so sure about this.

    1. Toby Lerone
      • 10 Years

I'm looking at mids only. Have two defenders and a keeper which is enough imo. Looking at maybe pritchard at hudd and deulofeu as punts

Yeah but Butland won’t let in a howler every week, if you ignore that...he’d have hauled.

I think you’re onto the fact that teams that want to stay up have to attack more and let their defence slacken as a result.

The only player for which i'll happily take a -2 hit come GW31 is Mane(own Salah and Firmino). Pretty much the only defender i would even consider is Coleman if fit. That said i might take a hit for a GK, but that's another story.

The idea that hits to replace blanks only cost 2 points is a myth. Hits always cost 4 points.

The difference is that, when replacing a non-blank player, the new player needs to outscore the old player by 4 points in order to break even that game-week, but when replacing a blank the new player only needs to score 4 points to break even.

The new player cannot even be guaranteed to score as many as 2 points (for example, a defender who concedes 2 goals and picks up a yellow card would only score zero), so you might lose more than 2 points on the deal.
That would be a bit unlucky, but if the number of points you expect from your new player is less than 4 then you're on to a loser. For example, if your new player has only been averaging 3 points a match, and you have no reason to expect him to do better than his average in the next match, then you should expect an immediate loss of 1 point on the deal if you bring him in for a hit to replace a blank.

Thank you, it’s been irking me this whole -2 point business, the team is starting from -4 points behind with the hit, so they have to get 4 points back to break even, simple.

Just been looking back at the comments whilst the games were on. This time period each week is generally populated by the poorest comments but this gameweek has surpassed all others which preceeded it. The same group of posters are guilty of posting this dross and I constantly ask myself "why do they bother?" . Is it because they are genuinely stupid or that they are shut away in their rooms for the afternoon before mummy cooks tea ?
If someone gets it please explain it to me.

The harshness with which they treat missed chances is a joke. Is that new this year?, seems it.
How can Salah score and assist the 2 most crucial goals and yet a non clean sheet Robertson gets more bonus for a no mark 80th minute assist? This should not happen, ever.
Salah gets in the box so often with great movement, a skill, yet is overly punished for not scoring every time. Ridiculous, needs to be changed.

This is the first season I've complained about bps btw.

Salah 10, Robertson 6 is all that counts FPL wise.
If Salah was a forward, he'd score more BPS wise.

Having a standardised system is the fairest way. It might not be perfect, but you can adjust for this by considering what results in negative Bps when picking players. Obviously Salah is too good not to have, but say if you were picking between Alli & Eriksen you can factor into you're decision that Eriksen is a Bps magnet whereas Alli tries to beat players often resulting in dispossessions which gives him negative Bps. I take your point that it can be amended, but I still think it's a good addition to the game.

Eriksen has only 5 less bps than Salah(with a game less played), Salah has been involved directly in 19 more goals.

Not denying that but it is strange how harshly the bps have treated Salah this season. The metric used seems to be a slap in the face for his unique talents.

Oh, you are talking bonus points.
Salah shares his with Firmino and co, Eriksen mainly with Kane or defenders.
BPS wise, it's not even close.

What's not even close,do you mean 5 bps is not close? Agreed if so but 19 directs goal involvement is definitely not close and would expect a greater gap. Eriksen still has a game in hand too.

Total BPS. Over 100 BPS difference and over 200 baseline BPS difference.
Salah pretty much needs to score 2 goals or score the only Pool goal to get 2 or 3 bonus.

Seems wrong that Salah has bonus point per direct goal goal involvement of .70 whilst Eriksen's is 1.29.

One has 88 more points for 19 more goal involvements.
Eriksen is a bit like Hazard, bap magnet. Any attacking involvement normally means bonus. Salah and Sterling struggle as goals/assists is their main drawcard.

Maybe it's as fair as it can be but Salah's playing style illustrates it's flaws/limitations.

Why do we need bonus points btw? Would the game be boring without?

Would it be an idea to make bonus points non doubles for captains. I like that idea.

Salah's main flaw is not scoring more and chilling out in defence.
Bonus points, especially in defence makes some players more favoured.
It just sounds like a "make Salah a better captain" option.

This is an interesting post because I also thought the same about Salah yesterday. The system is clear and I can’t argue with the transparent rules but there’s something that doesn’t feel right about what happened yesterday. I hate subjective statements like that but it doesn’t seem like a reflection of relative performance.

And it's not just that. The fact that a striker gets like 10bps more for each goal than a midfielder is ridiculous too. And even more with defenders. It's the opposite of what the normal points give each position. Wtf? They should really change that.

More minus for big chances missed and less for normal chance missed would be a change that more accurately reflects what you think of a performance when you watch the game.

Big chance missed makes me think "this guy is bad at football"
Normal chances I think "well he got into a good position, good job, wont score from there every time anyway"

Should be some kind of "error leading to goal against" event that triggers a large loss of bps. I see the logic behind own goals not being punished severely, as they are often random and unavoidable.

Exactly. If BPS were changed to reward defensive midfielders, they would rise in price accordingly.

BEING ON THE PITCH Playing 1 to 60 minutes (3)
        Playing over 60 minutes (6)

        Meh.

        ATTACKING
Goalkeepers and defenders scoring a goal (12)
        Midfielders scoring a goal (18)
        Forwards scoring a goal (24)
Scoring the goal that wins a match (3)
        Being tackled (-1)
        Being caught offside (-1)
        Shot off target (-1)
        Missing a big chance (-3)
        Missing a penalty (-6)
        Assists (9)
Creating a big chance (a chance where the receiving player should score) (3)
        Successful open play cross (1)
        Key pass (1)
        Successful dribble (1)

Personally I'd give + points for shots, and shots on target. Certainly not negative points. Fair enough deducting pts for missing a glaring opportunity. More than 3bps for the winning goal would make sense IMO, and more bps for a Key pass leading to a goal.

        DEFENDING
Goalkeepers and defenders keeping a clean sheet (12)
        Saving a penalty (15)
        Save (2)
For every 2 clearances, blocks and interceptions (total) (1)
        For every 3 recoveries (1)
        Successful tackle (net*) (2)
        Conceding a foul (-1)
        Conceding a penalty (-3)
        Own goal (-6)
Making an error which leads to a goal (-3)
Making an error which leads to an attempt at goal (-1)
        Yellow card (-3)
        Red card (-9)

Own goals and making an error leading to a goal could be harsher. Often defenders keeping cleanies are very close to each other in the baps. Offering individual bps for tackles interceptions and recoveries would help differentiate the Bap monsters from the rest.

        PASSING
70 to 79% pass completion (at least 30 passes attempted) (2)
80 to 89% pass completion (at least 30 passes attempted) (4)
90%+ pass completion (at least 30 passes attempted) (6)

        No further comment 🙂

Is it fair that a player gets points when it bounces in the goal off their backside when they know nothing about it? It is what it is - just a lot of salty Shaqiri owners and Salah captainers yesterday.

I agree with the missed chances issue, a striker should be encouraged to shoot and I would give an extra bps for a shot, not take one off when it shaves the post or the keeper makes a brilliant save

Bonus point system is a bit flawed in my opinion. First of all it shouldn't include goals, assists and clean sheets - you already score points for these. It should just be performance based additional points. That way someone who doesn't even score or assist might get an extra point or two if they put in a great all round performance. I won't go into detail but the only negative bps should be fouls in my opinion. Missing chances shouldn't be punished - just award shots on target.

Is it fair? Yes. The rules are clearly published for anyone to read and they don’t change, purely down to stats.

Price changes on the other hand... a black box that seems to be fiddled regularly.

the bonus points should be based on a scale.... everyone with +35BPS or more should get 3bonus,
everyone between 35 and 30 should get 2bonus
and everyone between 24 and 29 should get 3 bonus.

it's just an example of a scale, don't know how this would translate on FPL, but in this way people in a bad game, doesn't get awarded with 3 bonus, and people with 1 goal and 1 assist doesn't miss bonus because there is other 3 that scored 2 goals.

I think this system is harsh on players who are more creative...

I dont like players getting minus baps for being tackled/fouled .. good players are always trageted in games & its unfair for them to get punished.
A missed chance should be a -1 rather than -3

Title of the HT doesn't really match the comment, which is the only unfair part here haha!

The system is fair because it's consistent, but it's total crap. It's like they never took a moment to discuss it in the meeting room, or even think about it for a second after conceiving of the idea.

Mostly the issue is rewarding/punishing people for the same thing in baps as in normal points allocation. It defies all rationality haha

I actually like the idea of a baps system, but the current one is poop. I guess FPL are aware that people don't like change (as evident on this thread and many others), so they don't want to make wholesale improvements. Would love to see a completely fresh approach next year though.

      Bought Walcott
      Bought Wilson
And a stupid transfer Van Dijk overlooking triple up with Mane.

Trying to take players on, having shots etc should be seen as a good thing. Punishing players for trying to entertain/score doesn't make such sense. Perhaps Salah should start making 5 yard passes once he scores.

It's more aimed at rewarding players who pass and retain the ball well. Goalscoring midfielders would always get the BPs over deeper midfielders if this was removed. I'm not saying you're wrong. I agree with you to a certain extent, but I can see the thought process behind how the BPs scoring system

                    would mean selling sterling/mahrez/shaq/salah

Arnie easily outscores walcott for me over next 2. And likely 2 points in GW31

We (stoke) are suddenly looking much harder to beat...

Defoe could be a nice differential pick for 31.

Aguero to Firmino? Have Salah & VVD.

Thinking to wait until Friday for the transfer because I Still have Hazard, Sterling and Kane.

What on earth were West Brom thinking sacking Pulis ? Almost guaranteed to keep them up and then replaced by Pardew who immediately sets them up to concede when they have trouble scoring. The owners should hold their heads in shame for a club that previously has been very well run.

If a team can only score from corners they've no place in the top flight. Glad they might finally get relegated
