Line-up Lessons – Gameweek 29 – Part One

Eden Hazard toils as a “false 9” as Chelsea lose at Manchester City.

Aaron Ramsey is rested for Arsenal’s loss at Brighton as Arsene Wenger looks ahead to this week’s Europa League first leg clash with AC Milan.

Elsewhere, the fit-again James Tarkowski returns to the Burnley teamsheet, while Claude Puel freshens up his full-backs as Leicester are held at home by Bournemouth.

Here’s part one of Line-up Lessons, assessing the teamsheets and formations from Gameweek 29, with one eye on what’s to come over the midweek European encounters and beyond.

Arsenal

Starting XI: Cech; Chambers (Bellerin 83), Koscielny, Mustafi, Kolasinac; Wilshere, Xhaka; Mkhitaryan (Nketiah 83), Ozil, Iwobi (Welbeck 74); Aubameyang. Subs not used: Ospina, Holding, Maitland-Niles, Elneny.

  • What we saw: Arsene Wenger freshened up his starting XI for the trip to Brighton & Hove Albion, with Aaron Ramsey rested ahead of Thursday night’s trip to AC Milan in the first leg of their last-16 UEFA Europa League tie. Hector Bellerin and Danny Welbeck both dropped to the bench, with Calum Chambers and Alex Iwobi recalled. Chambers slotted in at right-back, while Iwobi was stationed on the left wing in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Both Bellerin and Welbeck entered the fray late on, while Eddie Nketiah was handed his Premier League debut up front as the Gunners looked to find a late equaliser.
  • What we learned: After Thursday night’s trip to Milan, Arsenal host Watford on Sunday. With the Europa League now looking the only realistic chance of securing Champions League football next season, Wenger is expected to name his strongest possible starting XI on Thursday night. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is ineligible to face Milan, though, so he appears a certain starter against the Hornets. Ramsey’s lack of match fitness means he may again be rested on Sunday if he plays the majority of Thursday night’s match. Mohamed Elneny provides another option in midfield, while Welbeck and Iwobi seem set to continue sharing minutes if Wenger retains a 4-2-3-1, with Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan looking certain starters in attacking midfield. Chambers is the alternative to Bellerin at right-back, while if Nacho Monreal (back) is available again, he should replace Sead Kolasinac at left-back. Rob Holding provides cover in central defence.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Full-backs, central midfield, attacking midfield

Bournemouth

Starting XI: Begovic, Francis, S Cook, Ake, A Smith, L Cook, Gosling, Daniels, King (Mousset 91), Wilson (Surman 77), Stanislas. Subs not used: Boruc, Defoe, Fraser, Simpson, Taylor.

  • What we saw: Cherries boss Eddie Howe used a 4-4-1-1 system for the trip to Leicester City – Josh King was deployed behind lone striker Callum Wilson, while Adam Smith started on the right side of midfield. Simon Francis was stationed at right-back, with Charlie Daniels at left-back. With the Cherries leading 1-0, Howe decided to switch to a more defensive 4-5-1 formation, with midfielder Andrew Surman replacing Wilson.
  • What we learned: Following an improved performance ahead of a home clash against Tottenham Hotspur, Howe could stick with a similar starting XI. Ryan Fraser offers a more attacking alternative to Smith down the right, while Wilson’s place in the side may soon be at risk – he has failed to score in his last four starts. The option to start with a 4-5-1 may be a viable one, with Surman coming into the side in the middle of the park, leaving Wilson or King as the lone striker. Jermain Defoe is expected to build up his fitness with further minutes off the bench for now.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, right wing

Brighton & Hove Albion

Starting XI: Ryan; Schelotto (Bruno 69), Duffy, Dunk, Bong; Knockaert (March 77), Stephens, Propper, Izquierdo; Gross (Kayal 86); Murray. Subs not used: Ulloa, Goldson, Locadia, Krul.

  • What we saw: Chris Hughton named an unchanged starting XI for the visit of Arsenal to the Amex, with the Seagulls lining up in the usual 4-4-1-1 system.
  • What we learned: With Brighton in terrific form, Hughton is set to stick with his settled starting XI for Saturday’s trip to Everton. Ezequiel Schelotto was forced off with concussion against Arsenal and will be assessed ahead of the weekend – Bruno will be on standby to start at right-back for the Seagulls. Solly March remains a possible alternative to Anthony Knockaert on the right wing, but other changes appear very unlikely.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Right-back, right wing

Burnley

Starting XI: Pope: Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Ward; Lennon, Cork, Westwood, Gudmundsson; Hendrick (Wood 46), Barnes. Subs not used: Lindegaard, Nkoudou, Marney, Vokes, Bardsley, Long.

  • What we saw: Sean Dyche retained the 4-2-3-1 formation for the home fixture against Everton, with the only change seeing the fit-again James Tarkowski replace Kevin Long in central defence. But trailing 1-0 at half-time, the Clarets boss switched to a 4-4-2, bringing on Chris Wood in place of Jeff Hendrick.
  • What we learned: After scoring the winner on his first appearance since Gameweek 19 following a knee injury, Wood is set to come under strong consideration for a starting spot against West Ham United on Saturday. The attacking option would be to pair Wood with the in-form Ashley Barnes in either a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 system, with Barnes capable of playing in the support striker role. Other changes appear unlikely after getting back to winning ways against the Toffees, although Tom Heaton remains close to a first-team return.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Goalkeeper, attacking midfield, forwards

Chelsea

Starting XI: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger, Moses, Fabregas, Drinkwater, Alonso, Willian (Giroud 78), Hazard (Morata 90), Pedro (Emerson 81). Subs not used: Chalobah, Caballero, Zappacosta, Cahill.

  • What we saw: Blues boss Antonio Conte fielded Eden Hazard as a “false 9” for the trip to Manchester City, although he was dealt a blow with N’Golo Kante unavailable due to illness. So Cesc Fabregas returned alongside Danny Drinkwater in central midfield, while Pedro was recalled in attacking midfield as Alvaro Morata dropped to the bench. Conte brought on Olivier Giroud for Willian, seeing Hazard drop into a deeper role before being replaced late on.
  • What we learned: Up next for the champions is a home clash against Crystal Palace on Saturday, before heading to Barcelona four days later for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie. Conte is likely to start with either Morata or Giroud up front, with Hazard moving back into an attacking midfield role, most likely in place of Pedro. Kante should return in central midfield if he’s passed fit, with Drinkwater most likely to make way. Davide Zappacosta and Emerson Palmieri provide alternatives in the wing-back positions should Conte look to rotate, while Gary Cahill provides back-up in central defence, with Antonio Rudiger’s start possibly the most at risk.

Current Status: Slightly unsettled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, attacking midfield, lone striker

Everton

Starting XI: Pickford; Coleman, Keane, Williams, Martina; Gueye; Walcott, Davies (Rooney 59), Calvert-Lewin, Sigurdsson (Bolasie 83); Tosun (Niasse 68). Subs not used: Robles, Schneiderlin, Baines, Holgate.

  • What we saw: Following the 1-0 defeat to Watford, Sam Allardyce made changes for the trip to Burnley. The fit-again Seamus Coleman replaced Jonjoe Kenny at right-back, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin was handed a recall on the left of an attacking midfield trio, seeing Gylfi Sigurdsson take up the No 10 role. Cenk Tosun was preferred to Oumar Niasse as the lone striker in the 4-2-3-1 system. With his side 2-1 down, Big Sam brought on Yannick Bolasie for Sigurdsson, seeing his side set-up in a 4-4-2. Bolasie played on the left wing, while Calvert-Lewin joined substitute Niasse up front. That became a 4-3-2 following the dismissal of Ashley Williams for violent conduct, with Idrissa Gueye dropping back into central defence.
  • What we learned: After another defeat, further alterations look likely for Saturday’s home encounter with Brighton. With Williams suspended for the next three matches, either Mason Holgate or Phil Jagielka will replace the Wales international in central defence. After being named among the substitutes, Leighton Baines may be ready to return at left-back in place of Cuco Martina, while Wayne Rooney is expected to push for a recall in central midfield. Morgan Schneiderlin is another viable option in the middle of the park, with Tom Davies’ place in the starting XI appearing at the most at risk. After scoring his first goal for the club, Tosun should retain his start in attack, while Bolasie could be an option to start wide left.

Current Status: Unsettled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, left-back, central midfield, left flank, attacking midfield, lone striker

Huddersfield Town

Starting XI: Lossl, Hadergjonaj, Jorgensen, Schindler, Kongolo; Quaner (Ince 33), Williams, Hogg (Depoitre 81), Van La Parra; Pritchard (Billing 46), Mounie. Subs not used: Smith, Malone, Lowe, Green.

  • What we saw: David Wagner named the same side that beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 for the trip to Wembley, with the Terriers again lining up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. But Wagner made a tactical change in the first half, bringing on Tom Ince for Collin Quaner in a straight swap. Alex Pritchard then had to be withdrawn at half-time due to a dead leg, with Philip Billing his replacement. Billing played as part of a three-man midfield alongside Jonathan Hogg and Danny Williams. Wagner made an attacking last change in order to try and get back into the match, with Laurent Depoitre replacing Hogg. The Belgian joined Steve Mounie up front in a 4-4-2.
  • What we learned: If passed fit, Pritchard is expected to retain his start against Swansea City on Saturday. Tom Ince is the obvious replacement in the No 10 role, while if Pritchard does start, Ince is an option to replace Quaner on the right wing. Aaron Mooy could return to full training this week following a knee problem and may replace either Williams or Hogg at the base of midfield. Changes elsewhere appear less likely, with full-back pair Tommy Smith and Chris Lowe currently out of favour, while Mounie is again expected to be preferred to Depoitre for the lone striker role.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, right wing, attacking midfield

Leicester City

Starting XI: Schmeichel, Amartey (Chilwell 20), Morgan, Maguire, Fuchs (Diabate 79), James, Ndidi, Adrien Silva (Iheanacho 59), Mahrez, Vardy, Albrighton. Subs not used: Gray, Hamer, Dragovic, Iborra.

  • What we saw: Claude Puel switched to a 4-3-3 formation for the home encounter with Bournemouth. Adrien Silva came into the side in central midfield, as Riyad Mahrez and Marc Albrighton flanked central striker Jamie Vardy. In defence, Daniel Amartey and Christian Fuchs were handed recalls in the full-back positions. But the Leicester boss was forced into a reshuffle after Amartey was forced off with a hamstring injury. Albrighton took over at right-back, while substitute Ben Chilwell played on the left side of midfield in front of Fuchs. The Foxes ended the match in more of a 4-2-3-1, with Chilwell moving to left-back, while substitutes Kelechi Iheanacho and Fousseni Diabate joined Mahrez in the attacking midfield positions as they pushed forward for a late equaliser.
  • What we learned: Following another frustrating afternoon at the King Power Stadium, Puel could make changes for Saturday’s trip to West Bromwich Albion. Danny Simpson is likely to return at right-back in place of Amartey, while Chilwell may replace Fuchs at left-back. If the Foxes boss sticks with a 4-3-3, Diabate and Demarai Gray could be options to replace Albrighton, while a return to a 4-4-1-1 is also possible, particularly if Shinji Okazaki is fit to return. Adrien Silva is the player most likely to drop to the bench.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Full-backs, central midfield, flanks

Liverpool

Starting XI: Karius; Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, van Dijk, Robertson; Oxlade-Chamberlain (Milner 79), Henderson, Emre Can; Salah, Firmino (Matip 88), Mane (Lallana 73). Subs not used: Gomez, Moreno, Mignolet, Solanke.

  • What we saw: Jurgen Klopp handed recalls to Dejan Lovren and Jordan Henderson for the visit of Newcastle United to Anfield. Lovren came in for Joel Matip in central defence, while Henderson started in the defensive midfield role, with James Milner dropping to the bench. The Reds ended the match in a 5-4-1, with Matip brought on to join Lovren and Virgil van Dijk in central defence, leaving Mo Salah as the lone striker. Fellow substitutes James Milner and Adam Lallana played on the right and left side of midfield respectively.
  • What we learned: Liverpool now face Porto in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie tomorrow night, before heading to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United on Saturday. But Klopp has promised to select a strong starting XI against Porto despite the Reds holding a 5-0 lead from the first leg. Changes for Gameweek 30 are set to be kept to a minimum, with the more defensive Joe Gomez perhaps in contention to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back. Matip may replace Lovren in central defence, while Milner could come back into central midfield. Georginio Wijnaldum has missed the last two league matches due to illness and isn’t expected to push for a start. Even if they do start in midweek, Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are all likely to see their minutes managed, given that all three appear sure starters at the weekend.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Right-back, central defenders, central midfield

Manchester City

Starting XI: Ederson, Walker, Otamendi, Laporte, Zinchenko (Danilo 87), De Bruyne, Gundogan, David Silva (Foden 90), Bernardo Silva, Aguero (Gabriel Jesus 84), Sane. Subs not used: Bravo, Kompany, Stones, Toure.

  • What we saw: Pep Guardiola made only two changes from the side that beat Arsenal 3-0 last Thursday for the home meeting with Chelsea. Both came at the back, with Aymeric Laporte replacing Vincent Kompany in central defence, while Oleksandr Zinchenko was preferred to Danilo at left-back.
  • What we learned: City host Basel in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on Wednesday night, before they head to Stoke City a week tonight. With a 4-0 lead from the first leg, Guardiola is expected to rotate his side in midweek, perhaps handing Gabriel Jesus his first start since returning from injury. John Stones is also likely to be handed a recall, while Raheem Sterling, who has been training over the past few days, could also return. Changes from the side that beat Chelsea 1-0 for the trip to the bet365 Stadium are likely to kept to a minimum, then, with Kompany perhaps an option to return in central defence, while with Fabian Delph back from suspension, he may start at left-back. Should he get some minutes on Wednesday night, Sterling could come into contention to replace Bernardo Silva on the right of the front three against the Potters.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, left-back, right wing

Part two of Line-up Lessons, assessing the remaining ten teams, will follow tomorrow.

Maybe, but I do think we have to be a bit more ruthless with our players with moves such as you suggest.

Hazard home to Palace, City mid away to Stoke, Spurs mid away to Bournemouth & Mahrez away to WBA could all outscore Salah away to Man U .... but will any one (with a FH in 31 I suppose) sell him for a one week punt (captain's band will be low this week) ?

    Lossl
    VVD, Bauer, Francis
    Salah(c), Walcott, Shaqiri, Ibe*
    Firmino(v), Wilson, (Kane)

    (DDG), (Sterling), (Alonso),(Otamendi)

10 playing (hopefully) and rolling a transfer so I’ve 2 FTs going into GW32 (no WC)

I know this has been discussed to death but I've clearly forgot whats going to happen after GW31 in regards to any DGWs.

Is it GW34 that we'll have more games or have I got that wrong?

      1. Now I'm Panicking
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 2 months ago

DGWs likely to be GW34 and GW37 (may even be one more) - unknown which will be bigger - most/all of the re-arrangements (for GW31 and GW35 (FA Cup semi-final blanks)) are expected soon after GW31 finishes

        1. JohnnyMagrinho
            6 years, 2 months ago

If that's the case then I guess a WC would be best used for GW34 and then TC in GW37 (as long as my WC can accomodate for both weeks and ignore the potential blank in GW35).

Looks like it'll be a case of waiting till GW31 is done with and going from there.

            Cheers.

                  6 years, 2 months ago

I'll have a look at it after GW31 is done and go from there.

Have all chips to play with other than FH so I have options.

If there's two DGW that would be helpful as one could be utilised for BB and the other for TC, if the fixtures are good enough.

Really going to waste a transfer on him given he plays 31, having kept him this long?

              I've kept him too.

He epitomises my FPL season in many ways so have decided to keep him as my mascot.

              Maguire Smalling Kenny

              Robertson then Dunk on bench.

Maguire, Robertson & Dunk for me.

Wouldn't go with Smalling as I can't see Liverpool not scoring.
Kenny isn't playing anymore now that Coleman is back, right?

Mm that would be the maverick way to go?

As I have triple Liverpool so to play Smalling would be crazy.. also own Walcott hence do not wish to play Dunk.

What about Maguire, Robertson and Kenny?

Smalling 1st Sub, Dunk 2nd... difficult this week

                  Really unsure

I'd definitely play Maguire and Robertson because:

                      WBA are awful.
                      Robertson offers good attacking threat.

The third place is up for grabs I suppose:

                      1) Smalling - will Liverpool score? I think so. Will Smalling score? Probably not. Will Smalling do enough for BPS? I don't think so.
                      2) Dunk - Will Everton score? Probably. Will Dunk score or do enough for BPS? Maybe.
                      3) Kenny - Will he even play? Coleman preferred at RB but could he slot in for Williams in the centre? I thought Holgate would be his replacement...

That's my thinking mate. Hopefully it's helpful at least.

I like that thinking a lot - cheers for the advice pal

Robertson does offer good attacking threat and probably warrants a starting slot for that reason alone.

So as you say the last position up for grabs is between Smalling, Dunk and Kenny.

I'm leaning towards Kenny though I know he's lost his place with Smalling as 1st back up to him.

                        Cheers bro

No worries. At the end of the day it usually comes down to a bit of luck being pivotal.

As a rule of thumb, when in doubt play the home defender. Over the course of the season they will score more than the away defenders of the standard.

What do you think? They clearly have no confidence. Wenger has lost the dressing room. Aubameyang could be worth a punt but I think I'd prefer Firmino given the form he's in.

what puts me off firmino is rotation risk as liverpool progresses to later stages of champions league and also he only has one game in gw34.

I would say Firmino is one of the players least likely to be rotated. He's absolutely integral to how Liverpool play and probably the fittest player in the squad.

Players like Mane and even Salah (I know, I know) could even be rested for half a game because of The Ox and Lallana being available to fill in for them.

Gini should be back soon too and Henderson has returned so there's more options to cover in midfield.

Also after hearing Klopp come out and say he has no immediate plans to rest players for the Porto game (we're 5-0 up after first leg) it's clear he isn't leaving anything to chance.

Can see him viewing Champions League as a chance to win something but don't think he's blinded by the allure, which means I reckon he'll be prioritising finishing as high in the league as possible to avoid having to qualify for next years CL if we finish 4th.

                          That's my thinking anyway.

Rotation is a factor yes but I'd rather a player in top form with one nice fixture over a player who's team is in dire form with 2 fixtures any day

Posted this in Reddit a few days ago.. Someone asked what's the difference between FH in 31 and 35.

Main reason from what I understand is that using your FH chip in GW31 has limited potential. Aside from Salah, Firmino, Shaqiri and either Mane, VVD or Robertson, the pool of players to choose from is very poor. Pickford, Butland, Lössl and Begovic probably the only keepers worth remotely considering. They aren't going to get anyone to a GW #1 rank.

In defence, with clean sheets being so few and far between, attacking defenders with goal threat should only be considered. Dawson, PVA, Coleman, Bauer, Daniels. Maybe Janmaat.. Again, picking the right ones is unlikely. These defenders would be doing well to score more than 2 pts. Inevitably, of all the defenders playing this week, some will get a clean and bonus and maybe attacking returns but with teams like these, you can never reasonably predict their returns.

In midfield and attack you have the likes of Siggy, Walcott, Wilson, Mounie, Brunt, Stanislas and that new mid for Huddersfield. Some of these are just punts and no one is really in form.

Therefore outside of the main 4 or 5 players everyone will have, you're free hitting to get an extra 6 or 7 players who will most likely struggle to score 20pts between them.

Playing the FH in 35 however, allows you to WC in 32/33 focusing on a strong Bench Boost squad for 34. This will likely be full of United, Leicster, Chelsea and Spurs players due to their decent fixtures and dgws. These players will be odds on to blank in 35 so those who hold to FH chip will be able to use it and dump players from these 4 teams and load up with Pool, City, maybe Arsenal and other teams with good fixtures that week..

This gives the FH chip much more potential as at least 3 of the top 6 teams will have a fixture as opposed to just one of the top 6 (Liverpool) in GW31 and managers can take full advantage of teams with 2 double gw's (34 and 37) without worrying about these players blanking in 35.

Think that's the gist of it anyway... Goodluck

Edit: of course some managers will FH in 31 and absolutely nail the differentials but it will require alot of luck and the averages of the FH will not be much higher than the averages of the managers who didn't FH but still have a core of 5 or 6 solid players in this week..again (Salah, Firmino, Shaqiri, Mane and one or 2 differentials. Siggy, Walcott, Wilson, Dawson and Daniels will likely be popular picks players but none of them are in good form)

I will wait GW35 to use it then. Will only have 8-9 starters on GW31 though.

As my post hints at. 11 players won't score that much higher than the main 4 or 5 players combined unless you nail all the picks. Possible, but unlikely given the unpredictable nature of the teams outside the top 6. Of the 8 teams playing in 31, 3 of them are in the relegation zone. Think about that for a sec..

I think this is really, really sound advice.

GW31 only has 4 games and looking at the quality of the teams that are playing - why would anyone want to load up on mediocre players like that on the off chance they might do something?

Smaller teams don't have out and out goalscorers or assist machines and very rarely keep clean sheets.

I remember last season when there was a DGW with a couple of poor teams and everyone jumped on it to capitalise and it was completely pointless because they did awful in both games and barely got many points.

I'm with you on this - look at Liverpool for points and if you've got a couple of extra players from Everton or Huddersfield for the games before (and are happy with the games to follow) then thats fine. I wouldn't be looking at Stoke at all due to playing City before and then going to Arsenal (as bad as they are) and then hosting Spurs. Seems like a waste of time.

                                My plan is definitely:
                                3 Liverpool

                                Maybes:

At the moment my teams consists of the following GW31 players:

Lossl; Ake, Coleman; Salah, Mane; Firmino.

I also happen to have Zanka & Mili on my bench (they've been there forever) so it looks like I'll have 8 to play.

I purposely brought in Lossl because his fixtures seem quite kind and I think he's quality, and now that Coleman is back and I have the cash to afford a good attacking defender (and I'm looking at differentials as I'm not doing too well this year) I thought he made perfect sense.

A lot of it will come down to what your team already looks like and what it would take to get more GW31 players in and what state that would leave your team in for the following weeks.

I'm happy with those players for that week and thereafter and they meld with the rest of my team. Plus, I plan on wildcarding soon.

If you were to FH in 31 you should really have committed to it in the last week or so and started bringing in players that do not have a blank so that you have a load of double game week players already in your team by the time you get to GW32 or 33

GW35 will be very easy to put out a very decent team without a FH, Liverpool have a fixture in 35, Arsenal and probably City have a double and play in 35, Leicester or Soton will have a double and play in 35, Burnley, Hammers and Newcastle all have doubles and a fixture in 35 too ... this idea that a GW34 BB team will have every premium player under the sun from Chelsea, Utd & Spurs (blankers in 35) plus Liverpool, City, Arsenal and all the fillers is just a fallacy because you simply can’t afford it.

There will be some interesting decisions to make - Lukaku vs Firmino for instance; Lukaku potentially with WBA, whm, ARS, bha, bou in 34, 36, 37 vs Firmino with BOU, STO, che for the same weeks. Lukaku has the extra fixtures to do better, but we will need to monitor his form. I probably favour Lukaku with those two extra fixtures, which should mean at minimum 4 extra points. Obviously there's a price difference too, so it depends what could be done with the extra budget elsewhere. As you say, we can't have everyone!

I will probably be playing my WC in 36, so a big clear out of the DGW34 team and a new set of DGW players ... Kun or Vardy may become Lukaku for GW37. I am struggling with the idea of a GW32 WC spaning 6 game weeks to GW37 ...

Have you still got your bench boost ? If so when are you planning to use it ? I'm curious to see how this fits into your plan.

I still have all my chips.

I suspect there will be a twist in the fixtures in that if Chelsea or Spurs crash out of Europe that the doubles will be spread over the free midweeks and not all placed in 34. Broadcaster schedules will influence things no doubt.

I will decide on BB/TC depending on the fixture arrangements,

Makes sense, the more I look at my team and the fixtures, the less inclined I feel to wild card in 32/33. The only thing that led me in that direction was the prospect of a strong bench boost but the points that could be made up by an overhaul of my team after 35 may be more beneficial. I'm mindful Liverpool have a superb single game week fixture in 34 and am quite sure I won't want to get rid of them on a wild card for that one, we shall see.

Last season I was set to WC & BB in 34 and thought those advocating the 36/37 combo were mad, but when I actually tried a WC team it was a huge compromise and quite a few single GW players looked better than the doublers that I didn’t want after the BB. I then realised that the WC really needs to be the week before the BB and that a WC team geared for doubles is not what you want to take forward to the following gameweeks.

The WC in 36 for a BB or TC is a focused team for just a few gameweeks and is more like a Free Hit in its use.

Ultimately there will be very little difference in the strategy but I expect bit of a premium in 29, 30 & 31 but lose out a bit in 35.

I wish you good luck in whatever strategy you use 🙂

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it definitely seems a viable alt strategy, my teams is hanging in the balance this week, my next transfers are key as it's time to decide on path and when I'm wild carding, exciting time in the season 🙂

Kun is going to become a bit of a dilemma I think with Jesus back and, should they progress in CL, rotation maybe becoming a factor. Huddersfield at home not the worst GW37 fixture either. There really are though decisions to make on which players to own. This, of course, impacts on when to use chips. I'm currently thinking 33 WC, 34 BB, 35 FH, which is fairly template I imagine. I am wondering how useful they are going to be however; I feel I might be tempted to lose Firmino (because he doesn't have a DGW), which could be a mistake. My recent purchases are Mahrez and Arnie with 30 and 32 in mind. I should get 8 out for 31 with no hits, I think I'm happy with that for now. My reason for holding FH is that I'm really not sure of the value of it, and feel more information later around the doubles and blank could be worth waiting for. We shall see.

Kun was just an example and I haven’t owned him all season, the point being that I don’t need my team in 34 to be my team in 37.

I will probably have about 11 or 12 double gameweek players in 34 and this is achieved by using the FH in 31 and having blank team players - using the FH in 31 removes the need for the WC in 32 because you already have the double game week players - it also naturally give about 9 players for 35 which can be helped along with a hit if necessary in 35.

Yes, exactly, you'll be able to afford maybe 5 of them (who happen to be also ones that you want) and those can be easily benched for 35 or transferred out and then back in for 37.

Following up on the strong Bench Boost squad for DGW 34. I want to start a discussion on which are the best enablers, so we can field a strong bench apart from our regular starters.
I'm looking at SWA defenders, BHA as they have good fixtures from 32 on. Any sub 4.5 mid that could do the trick? Maybe Mctominay if he still plays?
                            Who else are you considering??

I think you've missed the main advantage of using it in 31, which is not loading up your team with players from those rubbish teams. You can make good plans for using it in 35, especially if you have WC still in hand.

Just as a side note, if you've already wildcarded and/or used TC or BB, I would consider FH in 34 or 37.

It's not. It's only better if you've been preparing your current squad for GW31 so that you can WC in GW32.

The main objection to free hitting in GW31 is that there isn't much choice in players. So why spend GW28, 29, 30 getting GW31 players? Lack of fixtures is EXACTLY the ideal scenario for a FHC - you have a one week wildcard to pick anyone you'd like from 8 teams. Don't fancy Benteke or King for more than one gameweek? Not a problem, pick him for one week and then he's out of your team.

For those playing the FHC in GW31, they are ALREADY loading up on doublers. GW35 isn't going to be a problem as the likes of Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Burnley are unlikely to blank. We may also have Spurs.

Also, who's going to pick the likes of Coleman, Baines, Dawson, Van Aanholt, Sakho, Benteke, King, Tosun? These players won't be in teams preparing for GW31 with transfers rather than a FHC.

The problem with having players with a game in 35 and a double in 34 is that they don't have a double in 37 so to get a nice 37 team stacked with double gw players you need to have players that don't have a game in 35. Also Liverpool don't have a nice game in 37 but have a lovely game in 38 so you might want to bench one or two of your Liverpool guys in 37 which further complicates things.

You have two transfers? If you have 11 playing and 4 benched players who have a double in 37 then you get 6 double gw players for 37

Aren't there going to be teams that play GW35 and have a double in GW37? You could have brought some in for players that had a double in GW34, but then blank in GW35? Still might only add a couple of extra bodies, but a hit or two for GW37 will help too.

No, that's not what I meant. I'm talking about transferring out DGW34 players that blank in GW35 for players that play that week and also have a DGW37.

So you have 7 double gw players for 37

That's maximum assuming you carry a transfer through gw34

You've just described my plan, but I think I will be able to get 7 players who have 37dgw, as long as I can carry a FT into 35.

Yes that would work but you only have 3 gws to get the benefit of your wc then and tbh my team has been creaking for the last 5 or 6 weeks so I'd like to play the wc and out the structure in place for the run in and then just use ft to allow for tweaks.

I have planned for this strategy and will wc in 36 as the players I will have in 34/35 won't be the team I'd want to play in 37 as you say Dino.
barring injuries/suspensions I should have 11 dgw players for 34 and could play 10 of them in 35.
gw 31 is the compromise for me where I will have 6 currently, will probably stick with that but could get 1 more if I don't bank a free transfer..

should have said 3 of my squad are Liverpool so 3 of the 10 for gw35 are them,.11 dgwers for 34, 7 of those have a gwk35 fixture

Actually although i like the idea,
Most of our squads have higher percent of players who will play in GW35 than GW31....
So its easier to free hit in the GW where i have fewer players (GW31) to have 11 our of 11 playing and in the GW35 i can do few transfers to have a full team as well.

That's why I asked? Not exactly spoiled for choice with Midfield options under 5M playing GW31.

And the reason their under 5m is because they don't offer much (if any) potential and are probably not worth a transfer

Wow I hadn't anticipated being shot down for asking people's opinion on a player on a fantasy football forum. I'm more concerned with players passing they eye test rather than stats so was wondering what people thought.

I'm aware of players being priced according to their points scoring potential btw, as i have 2 FT I'm simply looking for a cheap option to replace RLC on my bench.

He's scored two in the last 3 games and seems to have runs of playing 90 minutes followed by a bit of rotation.

He's far from a dead cert to even play the full game but he's in decent form so might not be a bad shout.

Knockaert plays a bit further up than him and Ince is probably more creative, but again, they're all still finding their feet in the Prem so I wouldn't expect too much from any of them.

If you want to take a punt and have someone in for GW31 for next to no money I'd say you could do worse than La Parra but that doesn't mean I'd be expecting anything from him whatsoever, just on the off chance he might perform.

                                    Cheers mate appreciate it!

I might go for Milivojevic in that case as he's assured starts and I only have 4.9M to replace RLC.

Will have 2FT for GW31 then and bring in 2/3 form/punt players.

Because some questions, like the one that's been HT'd spark some discussion. Hence the reason it was HT'd. It promotes a healthy debate on strategies which is interesting and insightful.

The question above is merely seeking a yes or no answer and it's questions like these that ruin this forum. Makes tryna find useful information on here a difficult task. Endless RMT's and 'who will score more' and 'is this guy any good' crap.. These are sh*it posts and should all be put in a HT everyday (RMT HT and 'how did 'Player X' play' HT and removed if posted outside of this!

Got VLP before this GW. On basis of price, okay form, nailed left winger, plays in GW31, and that I thought Pritchard would be rotated against top teams.

Failed on the last argument. Watched the whole game this weekend. Pritchard was good, but more of a creative lad than a finisher. VLP had two or three shots, but played more like a LM than a LW in-game. Probably due to tough opponent. Pritchard was the one left up top when the opposition got corners or direct free kicks. This probably due to him being about 155 cms above the grass roots.

If I could choose again I would probably due Pritchard, but they can both flop or succeed the next two games. Hard to say.

does this mean leaving playing players on the bench and fielding non-players who are then auto-subbed in?

Mounie looks a good punt, even without the GW31 fixture.
                          Next five fixtures are excellent:

Not a fan but judging by the way Ashley Barnes tore him to pieces at the week and given Everton's form, particularly away from home, he's the kinda player that isn't worth talking about at the moment

                          currently have:

                          VVD
                          Salah
                          Firmino
                          Walcott
                          Shaqiri
                          Wilson

for GW31, I'd like to add 2 more with my FTs...

                          what players should I add?

                          thanks

Personally think you've got more than enough there already.

Maybe Lossl as Huddersfield have Swansea before and Newcastle after, but other than that I can't think of any need to invest in potentially very low scoring fixtures.

I'd be looking to the weeks ahead rather than focusing on GW31 to be honest.

i will wildcard GW32 or GW33 so it would just be punt players for GW31

Best Keeper and Defender for GW31.

I already have Daniels / Hegazi and I'm maxed out on Liverpool.

You don’t really sell anyone on a free hit, but assume you get their current sell value when selecting replacements.

Just looking at GW31 and GW35 and considering a better use (and yield of return) of the Free Hit may be for the second DGW.

Can’t see anything in GW31 beyond 3 x Pool, Shaqiri and whatever tarting players you have already. Likewise GW35 looking the same.

Perhaps but I would say only if you don't have your TC chip left.

Regarding GW31 is it better to pay the extra 0.4 for Daniels over Francis or does it not really matter as likely both will return 2 points?
