Scout Notes

Scout Notes – United Leave It Late

A five-goal thriller at Selhurst Park is decided by an unlikely hero for Man United, who banish a wretched first-half display to seal a last-gasp victory.

Romelu Lukaku headed to Selhurst Park as the third most captained player for Gameweek 29 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), backed by 10.4% with the armband.

Like the top two captains, Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane, the Belgian also found the net, extending the upturn in form that has now harvested five goals and an assist in his last six outings across all competitions.

Having also netted against Chelsea last time out, Lukaku has racked up 20 points in the last two matches.

He has now scored in successive league matches for the first time since Gameweek 18 and earned bonus points in back-to-back fixtures for the first time since Gameweek 6.

In midfield, Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba supplied an assist apiece, though Jesse Lingard failed to profit from a return to the starting line-up. Snapped up by 43,000+ for Gameweek 29 after his winner against Chelsea, he has now scored just one goal in his last eight starts.

Elsewhere, it was a night where the differentials made their presence felt.

After falling two goals behind, Chris Smalling (4.4% owned) netted the visitors’ first before Nemanja Matic picked the perfect time to fire his first goal since arriving at Old Trafford to clinch the points late on.

While Smalling and Antonio Valencia (with his first assist of 2017/18) atoned for the lack of a clean sheet, David De Gea’s 44% owners were left with just a single point to show – his lowest return since Gameweek 20.

Indeed, it’s now one shut-out in the last five league fixtures for Jose Mourinho’s men, who had racked up four straight clean sheets prior to that.

The short-term schedule – clashes with Liverpool and Man City in addition to a blank Gameweek 31 in the next four rounds of fixtures – hardly look conducive for points at either end of the pitch.

That match with the Merseysiders takes place three days before their crucial Champions League second-leg clash with Sevilla, with rotation looking very unlikely for either match.

United’s progress in Europe will determine how we assess their prospects over the run-in. Should they progress past the La Liga outfit, the first leg of the quarter finals would take place in the midweek before their league trip to the Etihad – a match where City could conceivably clinch the title.

An exit to Sevilla, though, would lessen the chances of rotation and boost their appeal for those looking to Wildcard in Gameweek 32.

Palace down but not out

Three minutes into the second-half, Roy Hodgson’s side commanded a 2-0 lead that would have taken them into thirteenth place in the Premier League.

Instead, they remain rooted in the drop zone after Matic’s long-range effort denied them of any points.

Nonetheless, for long periods the Eagles out-battled and out-thought their opponents with a performance that still offers optimism for their survival chances.

Christian Benteke’s assist for Andros Townsend’s opener maintained a remarkable run of form for the Palace target man.

Having managed just a single goal and assist in the opening 21 Gameweeks, Benteke has now served up attacking returns in seven of the last eight league matches.

With Wilfried Zaha still edging his way towards a return, Benteke looks the go-to option for those wielding Free Hit Chips for the restricted Gameweek 31, where Palace make their way to Huddersfield.

Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that he’s bagged a goal and assist in each of his last two visits to Palace’s weekend hosts, Chelsea.

Despite the nature of last night’s defeat, the schedule from Gameweek 33 onwards (bou BHA wat LEI sto WBA) shows that all is not lost for the Selhurst Park outfit, though the lack of a double Gameweek means they are likely to remain differentials.

Certainly, with a single clean sheet in eight, Hodgson’s men have offered little in the way of defensive returns, though Patrick van Aanholt offered a belated reminder of his threat by bagging his first of the season, with the fit-again Jeffrey Schlupp – utilised as a left winger in a 4-4-2 – providing the assist.

Who would you bring in for this week considering fixtures for GW30 and 32? (Going against the consensus and using my FH in GW31)

    A) Kenny > Lascelles (SOT, HUD)
    B) Kenny > Schindler (SWA, new)
    C) Kenny > Maguire (wba, bha)
    D) Kenny > Cresswell (BUR, SOT)
    D) Quaner > J.Ayew (hud, MUN) - Only considering this because rival has J.Ayew

Not really looking beyond GW32 too much for now as I'll likely WC in 33 once there is more clarity on the doubles.

I think Jose will play 3 CBs because Mane and Salah both cut inside. He did the same against Chelsea with Hazard and Pedro.

I'm hoping it turns out to be a similar game where United can punish Liverpool on the counter. I'll go 2-1 United, DDG motm 😀

      I don't like the -8.
Maybe just Eriksen to Mane? Not so sure Ake and Benteke/King/Mounie can make up the 8 points and then you have to get Kane back in gw32 at a higher price than you're selling for

Value not a problem. Just need those 2 to get Atleast 8 points to make it a success.

I got Chilwell a few weeks ago since LEI were going to have some easy home fixtures.
He didn't play vs SWA, and got just 4 points vs STK and BOU together.
LEI have won only 2 of their last 12 matches, and in the easy fixtures I mentioned above they have dissapointingly scored 1 and conceded 1.
If Mahrez didn't score in the last moment vs BOU, that'd be an even bigger failure.
    It looks bad doesn't it?

I’d avoid their defenders for sure but Mahrez & Vardy keep chipping away. If you’ve got Kane/Aguero & Firmino then it’s arguable that Vardys money could be used elsewhere but I’m happy to keep him if he can grab a goal every 2nd game on average

wouldn´t be overly concerned as they are a good team and with no pressure i think they will score plenty of goals but i would not invest in their defence atm, watching their last two games it looks like they just play for fun and that leaves them both open in defence but also creative, mahrez had a lot of chances for example

I've had Maguire since gmwk3 & at least if/when conceding he still brings hope/excitement with possible attacking returns.

I get why ppl wouldn't invest but I'm def keeping (even through blank 31) & playing him each week.

100pts, 11th best defender in the game @ the mo. only Jones (101pts) betters him at a starting price of 5mil or less

    Morning all

What to do here? I'm planning to WC in GW32 so any non-BGW players are just around for this week... currently have 7 GW31 players.

Both Sterling and Alonso are due to drop but have decent fixtures this week (stk / CRY). Is it worth shipping either of them to free up funds?

Is it time to call time on DDG and free up funds? - I've had him since c. GW10 but his save points are no longer good enough

    1FT £0itb

    DDG, Lossl
    Alonso, VVD, Fernandez, Tomkins, Duffy
    Salah, Hazard, Sterling, Shaq, Mili
    Kane, Firmino, J.Ayew

    Appreciate the advice!!

A question mainly directed at Granville as the only Scout who is an owner, what is he doing with Son?

Son has scored 4 goals in his last 2 games in all competitions, yet only has one attacking return away from home all season. His next 4 league games are away, BLANK, away, away.

If he decides to remove Son, who would he get in?

A review of the criteria for assists is required by FPL over the summer. There have been numerous examples this season of inconsistency, culminating last night in a decision to award an assist to Pogba that was an absolute disgrace. What do the scouts think the criteria for an assist should be?

For example, I fail to see how Pogba (Utd 3rd goal) and De Bruyne (City 2nd goal) received assists in the below video’s when Gray for Leicester (Leicester third goal) did not.

Ah good. I'd say I agree almost every time with the decisions FPL make with regards to assists (and goals aren't their call to make) so I didn't want there to be an issue.

I think that one was headed by Ayew, keeper saved, hit Chicharito, then went to King who scored. Can see why that one wasn't given due to the 2 touches by 2 different WHU players before it reached King

I know you're not asking me for my views but I'll give them anyway 🙂

I think the Pogba one is a fair enough fantasy assist by the rules because his shot on target was blocked and Matic scored the rebound (albeit ridiculous to consider it an assist in real terms). Jammy and ill-deserved no doubt but I don't consider it controversial.

The De Bruyne (assume you mean City 3rd goal) and Gray ones are different as I'd say those are crosses being deflected and we get into that awful area of interpreting intention. This is where I think change would be helpful because people will never agree.

I remember Ibrahimovic getting a laughable assist awarded to him last season for attempting to cross to the far post, it being blocked by a defender in the middle of the goal and someone at the near post putting it away. As a non-owner when most had captained him I was raging.

          Views appreciated GW 🙂

I think we differ on Pogba as I think he hit it in such a way that it was going to curl wide of the goal and not be on target anyway. It could even be argued he was trying to cross it for Lukaku. I think there was too much doubt for it to be given as an assist.

The De Bruyne one was the one where it had already gone past Aguero at the near post to a waiting clutch of City players at the back stick, Gomes fumbled it back to Aguero who stuck it in. Apologies if I labelled the wrong goal! I agree intent is very difficult to make an objective decision on, but when it is clear and obvious in the cases of De Bruyne above and Ibra in your anecdote, then I think some common sense needs to be applied.

Upvoted for the Son question, personally thinking about taking his points and running.

I think the stuff about assists is outside the context of the scoutcast and has been covered to death in the past.

Just had a look. Last season:

Home: 16 appearances, 4 goals, 3 assists, 22 chances created, 2.6 shots per game
Away: 18 appearances, 10 goals, 3 assists, 21 chances created, 2.1 shots per game

Almost a mirror reverse of this season. Which I guess implies that what we are currently seeing is nothing more than happenstance.

I seem to remember a lot more 3-4-2-1 last season, but under that system he didn't tend to start anyway. Just checked on Understat and he got a fair few goals after coming on as a sub. He also had a boost of 2 goals and 2 assissts from the 6-1 and 7-1 away wins for spurs at the end of last season.

pogba got an assist for that?? wow.
Even if his shot is on target, it bounced back in the complete opposite direction, that can not be an assist.

If his shot is deflected and still goes toward goal and then matic scores, ok i'll accept that as an assist.

Not when the ball ends up behind him.

Since it's more or less chip o'clock in FPL now (I'll probably play 4 chips in 7 gameweeks) I'm curious as to what you imagine the purpose of the chips originally was from FPL's perspective. What do you think FPL Towers were hoping to achieve and do you think those goals have been met?

The reason I ask is that I accept a lot of people enjoy the chips but I'm an FPL purist and would sooner not have them at all so I'm interested to know what perceived benefit they've brought to the game. (In fact I'm so boring I'd much sooner have 38 normal GWs and no blanks or doubles, not something FPL can control though).

I agree up to the point about doubles- I preferred it when careful planning could let you steal a march on your casual rivals- now everyone just wildcards the week before anyway leading to near identical teams

Yeah, I don't hate the DGWs or anything, it just feels like it steers everyone down the same path and unless you're going to be truly inventive it's all a bit autopilot.

It's probably just the nostalgia factor (in the past music was better, food tasted nicer, etc.) but I yearn for the days of the single wildcard being your only additional weapon. You'd have those that used it early to correct initial mistakes and steal a march on team value and those that hoarded it carefully to help manage the BGW/DGW mess at the end of the season. Was always fun to see the rival camps lauding the smartness of their tactics.

I agree. For me it has over complicated the game and added further variance that is unnecessary and turning me off the game. The variance players performance and captain choice is enough while still engaging skills of prediction and researching teams and players. Adding a Triple Captain (and most of the other options) just makes the game into a lottery - I want to engage my brain and football experience not my 'lucky stars' .... which have been black holes this year btw! :-).

      2) What tweaks would you make to the bonus points system?

      3) Is it ridiculous to say that transfers only cost 2 points in a blank gameweek?

2 scrap it and start again. Man in the stand but partner up with another company like the Dream Team did ( who scored). Let the real skill be watching games and picking out players instead of opta doing the donkey work for us

3 yes . Quite possible gw31 defenders bar pool, score 0 or 1 points.

4 1 hit max. If you really must. 7 or more players then no need to hit

Why FH chip GW31 or GW35?
With GW36 being a GW not to bench boost or use TC I think good teams with good fixture could make a huge difference in points, especially when most will have DGW players in 37. (maybe more than the expected average points gain of 11 points for 31/35)
The other issue is GW 34/37 where you can concentrate on the single gameweek fixtures in 33/35/38.

For those planning to take a hit (or hits) next week, is it worth spreading the cost by making the transfer(s) this week instead - or is it too risky due to injury/lack of nailedess?

E.g. I could buy Baines for a hit this week and bench Shaqiri (MCI). I then need Baines to get 2 points more than Shaqiri this week, and then 2 points more than a blank player next week (aka 2pts total next week). However, there's no guarantee that Baines will play in GW31; whereas next week, I would be able to make a more informed decision.

Have Deulofeu in a draft league (11 players, 7 to field every week). With blanks and DGWs ahead, is it wise to drop him and get players like Gosling who will get an extra game or wait for the possibility of his injury not being that bad? I think the main topic I want to hear about is (obviously) the blank in GW31.

From GW29, who is starting to play their way into your thoughts? Who are you keeping tabs on in GW30? Are you considering players like Benteke now?

Shows how shite GW31 is when Benteke, who has scored 1 PL goal in last 10 games and plays for a team in the relegation zone) is genuinely one of the best striking options!

Can you cover the best non free hit strategy for managers that have already played it earlier in the season. Would you go with the idea that get 7/8 players out for GW31 then use a few hits to bring in players who have a DGW in 34 and also play in BGW35. Then WC in 36 for the DGW in 37. Which would mean TC in GW34 and the bench boost GW37 after the WC in GW36.

Is anyone on the Scoutcast considering captaining Salah vs United? He has returned in 23 of his last 26 games in all competitions and assuming Jones is unfit, United's backline does not look very solid. It's the ultimate case of form vs fixtures with the most in form player having what on paper seems like one of the hardest fixtures.

Salah's only blanks against big teams this season came in GW 4 where he only played 45 mins vs Man City away and GW 8 where Liverpool drew with Man Utd 0-0 at Anfield.

On the other hand, Bournemouth are the kind of team that won't sit back even when facing big teams, and although they've fared well against bigger sides lately, I think it's the perfect game for Kane to get ahead of Salah on goals scored.

        Points not pounds

Would you rather have 1 point or 0.1m?

I can bring in a HUD defender for Duffy and lose 0.1 as will want him back, or Kenny and maybe lose 1 point from GW31 if he comes on.

Leicester have won just 2 of their last 12.
They have only kept 3 clean sheets in 12.
After gw31 we'll be looking to build our wildcard teams and LEI continue their nice fixture run, they even have a double gw.
They are midtable, probably safe, European qualification seems impossible, so they don't really have a target to chase this season, which makes them less motivated to give 100%.
Personally I've had Chilwell who in home matches vs SWA STK BOU has totally disappointed me, bringing just 4 points in total.
Mahrez has been just OK, while Vardy seems hungry to score in big games and just doesn't do it against smaller teams, like the ones they'll be facing after gw31.
All the above show that Mahrez is probably the only one worth keeping/getting.
        What do you think?

Leicester don't have a GW31 fixture. Thery looked pretty please to score the equaliser at the weekend. I think you might be doing the media's job by painting a narrative from recent results. They've underperformed when you look at the results, but they still look like they are trying to play like Leicester and score lots of goals. They don't look like they've given up to my eye, anyway.

Sorry, you said after GW31 - which isn't important for people who are WCing in GW32 or 33. Unless your question is an advanced question about the WCing in GW32 or 33....

Yes it's aimed at post-gw31 (wildcard) planning. Since we'll be looking for players from teams with good fixtures for the final part of the season, I think it's important to know how and if a team actually takes advantage of easy-looking games. As an example, if Leicester keep scoring so few goals while conceding, it should make them less attractive to us. Another similar trap could be Arsenal, unless they improve.

Who do ye think are good gw31 differentials?

        Defoe
        King
        Brunt
        Townsend
        Sørloth
        Coleman
        Tosun
        Can
        Pereyra
        Deeney

Do ye think any of these players that have not made it into many teams or being talked about too much might be worth a punt for gw31 or have ye any punts in mind for the BGW yourselves?

        1. Deulofail

Baines. Quite likely to buy him this week, as I already have Coleman. I think people will get caught up in their disapproval of double defences and tripling up in general, plus Everton's poor results and the idea of balancing their team (perhaps only getting 3 GW31 defenders instead of 4 or 5),which will leave Baines as a great big differential unless he puts himself in the shop window in the next game.

(Just noticed this is the Scoutcast HT, not the current article, but I've written it now, so I'll post! Haha)

Should you look to spread your bets in GW31 (i.e. one player from each team) or look for the high ceiling (i.e. 2 players from one team and none from another).

        Example of Spread the bets:
Crystal Palace Striker and a Huddersfield Def

        Example of High Ceiling:
        Bournemouth def and striker

1 Save points over hoping for a CS the better plan for bringing in a keeper. Butland is a good example of save points

2 apart from pool , would it not be wise to ignore 31 defenders altogether and go with attack and mid?

3 Did Mark find out from FPL how they decide if a keeper has made a save or not.

4 those who got rid of kane a few week back and now have no value tied up in him. Are any of the strikers worth looking at. King or dare I say it.Tekkers ( feels dirty saying that) he's scoring well last few weeks

We should own him because of his exceptional form, and his ownership is astronomical for the same reason.
But we should captain the player that we expect to score the most points.
That is likely to be Salah most weeks apart from DGWs, but doesn't necessarily have to be every game-week.

In the context of an individual game week is it possible to make transfers for our 'regular' team and then go on to action the free hit chip?
Or do the transfers prior to firing the free hit become disregarded?
I ask because it could be beneficial to modify the team using free hit(s) ready for the subsequent game week.

A belated reward for holding Son through his run of blanks. Liverpool triple up all returned. Mahrez goal at the death was deserved for his attacking stats over the last 2 games.

        Rough
Playing Dawson over Duffy. Walcott had an xG of over 1 in his match yet failed to score. I think he has an excellent chance of returning in the next match.

I invested in double Watford defence a couple weeks ago and it has been great. When I bought him the stats said I was the only person in the top 10k that owned Karnezis so his clean sheets recently have been very sweet.
Mahrez's last minute goal was great too.

A meh week all round really for me. Two clean sheets, two assists and a goal, with no bonus points at all.

Rough: after much agonizing, deciding to keep Sterling and rather swap DDG for Begovic for a -4 to enable (C)ane as a differential. That Mahrez late goal was infuriating... Walcott 1st sub blocking Dunk points, as he blocked Maribappa points last GW. Still hoping he'll bring some returns before end of GW31.

Rough: Bought Fabianski for a hit last week so I could bench Hennessey for his 3 tough games. There was a period during the Palace-United game that I thought Hennessey was going to get a major haul. In the end, I remain only 7 pts down on the transfer with 1 more game for Fabianski to make up the deficit.

Smooth: After owning Coleman since GW26 (0, 1, 0), he finally touches the ball inside the penalty area to steal an assist from Walcott. Time to Buy Baines this week to join him?

As a Kaneless manager, it's always a smooth when he scores single digits, especially when I captain a higher-scoring Salah. On the flip side, Wilson and Vardy did nothing again.

I was working at the Burnley Everton game on Saturday & got hold of the original teamsheet pre-deadline- & had the Everton lineup on the sheet confirmed by their social media guy. Based on said intel, I not only brought in Leighton Baines- but also shared the teamsheet with other mates, including a certain someone on the scoutcast.

All was fine...until Big Sam decided to make late changes to his lineup, which I didn't find out until 11:29am.

But the smooth was I got Dunk's bench points so happy days.

rough but not too rough as i had benched players with 7 and 8 points, but my reasoning was still sound so fine after all. rough part is that Stanislas pick could have been so much better if he had scored on his numerous chances, far better pick than Wilson but they got the same amount of points in the end.. de gea one point was a dissapointment and as a liverpool supporter that third united goal was displeasing to watch. shifted from salah to kane one hour before deadline but not much in it to be fair

smooth, 56 points so fairly happy and i for once was cool headed enough to save Ota transfer which was good in the end. Several teams lost cs in the end of their matches actually good as i had none of them, Mahrez goal was a 20 pointer in my ml. 2 ft to use seems nice too.

Smooth - Kane (C), Salah, Lukaku, Robertson, Mahrez and Mané did alright.

Rough - How has Kelechi failed to convert MAGUIRE's assist? How has MAHREZ finished the game with just one goal? Could easily have score one more and assisted one (bad miss, Morgan header). How has ARNIE not scored that big opportunity? Obvious pen denied to Spurs.

Once again, with some luck, could have been much better.

Checked to see if Mane was in the starting line-up, perfect. Completely forgot that Schindler was in there so Bauer 1st def sub and Duffy 2nd def sub. Ogbonna didn't play so Bauer came in but if I wasn't so silly I would have got the 6 points from Bauer and the 6 off the bench from Duffy! ROUGH

Rough: My double Leicester defense ALWAYS finds a way to concede 1 goal. Monreal injured for a supposedly primed fixture.

            Rough - A week after benching Shaqiri's 9 points and Lingard's 6 points (although Shaqiri came on), I benched Bauer's 6 points and Dunk's 8 points.

In fact, Dunk scored 1 more point this GW than my entire backline (DDG, Alonso, Mee, Maguire). To make things worse, the two defenders I benched this GW scored as many points as my defenders have scored in 10 appearances in the last 3 gameweeks:

            Dunk v ARS: 8 pts
            Bauer v sou: 6 pts

            vs

Alonso vs mun, mci = 3 pts
Maguire vs mci, STK, BOU = 3 pts
Mee vs swa, SOU, EVE = 6 pts
Dunk vs SWA = 0 pts
Bauer vs BHA = 2 pts

I've really enjoyed listening to Az these past few weeks talk about Lingard, basically because doing so has been like listening to my own interior monologue, word for word, and its nice to know I'm not alone. I too got him in despite hating him and completely against my better judgment, right at the end of his good run and have had nothing from him since. So last week, completely sick of him and everything his face represents, I benched him, but just benching wasn't good enough - I put him 3rd on my bench, behind Mawson (good fixture against Brighton) and Long (good fixture at home to Southampton) and of course he comes on and scores and, as Sterling didn't play, I got Mawson's zero points off the bench after conceding 4 (FOUR) to Brighton instead of Lingard's 6. So this week, still benched Lingard as I wasn't sure he would start, but, not wanting to make the same mistake again, put him first on my bench with Duffy behind him since he was against Arsenal. Sterling doesn't play and I get Lingard's 2 points off my bench instead of Duffy's 6. I HATE LINGARD!!!!!!!!!! If I didn't hate him enough already, I've had to retype his name every time in this rant because it autocorrects to Lingered.

I know everyone will say 'why didn't you sell him' etc but I've had other fires to put out every time I've wanted to! And anyone who says you shouldn't have bought him in the first place is absolutely correct.

First week in a while that was mostly smooth: 53 points after one hit; Captain Salah; attacking points as well from Mane, Ayew, Firmino, and Kane; clean sheet from Davies; gained a few points on my ML rivals, sixth straight week of green arrows, and clawed my way back into the top 1m for the first time since GW16.

Rough: Looking for clean sheets I chose to field Hegazi and Mee while Dunk and his goal sat on my bench. That's about it, really.

To be honest, the slow climb back into the top 1m is what I'm most excited about. This has been a challenging season for me - every 50/50 choice seems to have gone the wrong way. But six weeks of small green arrows has me thinking I can still turn it around and salvage something by the end of the season, since I still have all my chips.

Smooth: Son points, TAA 3 baps

Rough: Finding out Daniels isn't on pens anymore (which everyone else seemed to know already); Daniels late clean sheet loss from a 90+7 min goal (in a game with 4 mins added at the end); pretty much the rest of my team apart from Salah(c); and the fact that despite all this it was my highest GW rank since GW12 and first green arrow in 7 weeks.

Persuaded myself to go with fixtures over form, brought Bellerin in, only for him to be rested for the first time this season.
Then to make it worse he was brought on as a sub, to get me 1 point to prevent me getting Duffy's 6 pts from the bench.

I'm not but I imagine the ideal XI would be:

            Butland
Coleman Schindler Daniels (or Dawson or Bauer)
Salah Mane Shaqiri Siggy Walcott (or Benteke or Deeney if 3-4-3)

And this is why the FH chip is wasted in GW31.

That team will probably only score at best 10 points more than one that has 3 Liverpool, one extra midfielder and attacker and a couple of defenders

Is it madness captaining Mahrez over Kane this week?

76pts behind ML rival who will captain Kane.

Mahrez doesn't get many double figure hauls but this could be his week!

Picking any toffee players- even if its for GW31- feels like a whole bowl of wrong. They are so bad.

One week punts for 31 could be quite fun. Maybe Tommy Smith could bomb on and score one, maybe Townsend or Rondon do something.

Why Pope? Heaton still not on the bench and Pope is pushing for a World Cup place, doubt Dyche will drop him from a winning team.
