Though for many fans the idea of the set-piece may conjure up images of Tony Pulis or convoluted chalkboard diagrams, such situations have long been considered golden opportunities within the realm of football analytics.

Set-plays tend to produce a surprisingly high volume of a side’s goals, accounting for between 25% and 35% of an average team’s tally across the major European leagues. The current Premier League season has been no exception to this rule, with 27.2% of all goals to date having come as a direct result of a set-piece.

Teams who can best profit from these situations therefore earn a meaningful advantage over their opposition. Perhaps the most famous example of this in recent history are FC Midtjylland, whose dedication towards dead-ball routines brought the Danish underdogs 23 set-piece goals en route to their first-ever league title in 2015.

Analysing sides – and players – who thrive in this oft-overlooked aspect of the game may help to identify some hidden gems among the FPL player pool as we enter the final Gameweeks of the campaign.

Indeed, with two (yet-to-be-scheduled) double Gameweeks between now and the end of the season, scouting for underpriced players who boast a goal threat from such scenarios could prove additionally vital as we look to supplement our core players with high-upside options.

This week’s Technical Area will look to break down the league’s premium set-piece threats, in the hope of outlining some key targets ahead of the busy upcoming run-in.

What to do with Richarlison? Can't believe I still own the bloke, he's been awful for weeks. At least for a while he was playing well which gave me some justification for keeping him, now he's completely ineffective.

Obviously plays in GW31 but with ars and liv he's got horrible fixtures. Tempted to finally cut my losses this week, but for who? Can't afford Shaqiri.

Realistically I think both Utd and Huddersfield will concede. Can see DDG making loads of saves though.

    2. stat
      8 years, 4 months ago

I had the same dilemma and ultimately decided to keep DDG for this GW and go into GW 31 without a keeper (none are worth taking a hit for except maybe Karius, but I already have 3 LIV players). DDG will probably make loads of saves vs Liverpool and I'd rather use transfers bringing in defenders who could score/assist.

Ignoring GW31 (plan to free hit), Sterling to:
    A) Ozil punt
    B) Mkhitaryan
    C) Mahrez
    D) Sane
    E) David Silva

Worth keeping Crouch for gw 31? Or should I get mounie instead? Fel like I rather get a defender or siggy instead of Pogba

Are Mounie and Van La Parra pretty much nailed-on for Huddersfield right now? With those fixtures, they're superb options for 5th mid and 3rd striker.

It seems so. But I'd rather have Pritchard.

Van la Parra has been in the side since Kachunga got injured. Not saying it means anything but put me off him a bit

2FT burning hole in my pocket. No 31 really interests me and was looking for excuse not to do Deulofeu>Ramsey before Milan game

I guess the only issue is potential rotation, I have him and got burned last weekend (which didn't really surprise me all that much)

Next 3 games are great if Arsenal fight back and play with some pride which the Milan game suggests. I would probably keep on WC
