Gameweek 30 begins with the headline act, as Manchester United host Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Bizarrely, it serves up a scenario that urges Fantasy managers to question the potential of Liverpool’s attack and, in particular, Mohamed Salah as a captaincy option.

The Egyptian has been the most popular armband selection for three successive Gameweeks but has surrendered that status today. Despite a run of six goals in five Gameweeks, the presumption that Jose Mourinho’s tactics will stifle this threat has convinced many of us to seek out alternative skippers.

The Manchester United manager goes with a back four but is without Paul Pogba in his midfield; the Frenchman failed a fitness test this morning as rumour of a training ground injury proved correct.

The major surprise is perhaps the recall for Marcus Rashford, who, after his encouraging performance from the bench at Crystal Palace, starts a first league outing since Gameweek 21. That leaves Jesse Lingard in reserve.

The Liverpool line-up is as expected, with the front three of Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino intact. They will look to exploit a United defence that has claimed just a single clean sheet in their last five Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

For fooks sake. Trust Lovren to run his mouth then play like that. Trent got sold twice and they scored twice. Game was won within that 10 minutes. Good game, fair play to United fans on here. Enjoy.

It's the same mistake he made at City, TAA is too inexperienced a player for these games. Klopp should've played Gomez and Matip away from home, would've been a different game then.

Seen this on social media. It's ridiculous.

People seem to be singling Lovren out for the goals and overall performance. Let me stop you right there - those goals were not his fault. The entire performance by Liverpool was far from good enough and players within every position under performed.

Mané was undoubtedly our best player today, not saying he was excellent but he did more than anyone else for Liverpool. He was constantly trying to initiate attacks, looking for options and ran his socks off. Want an attacking player criticise? What about Salah? Or is it because he's the golden boy no-one is allowed to criticise him? I'm a Liverpool fan, I'm happy to say, but Salah was far from good in this game.

It's just kneejerk, fickle responses to one result that create such a plastic, toxic environment.

United were the better team, deserved to win and Mourinho got the tactics spot on. Liverpool fought back but the damage had been done.

I refuse to accept any criticise levelled more so at one player than another in this kind of situation - it's a team game and collectively Liverpool did not do enough to get anything out of that game.

Don't think it's silly, some harsh words said about Poch following Spurs' loss to a better team with a better manager. Safe to say Pool hardly had that against Porto (not to take that away from them, but I'll pick Porto over Juve every day of the week in a knock out tie).

This weekend Spurs could overtake Pool in the table. End of season of course will determine it all, plenty potential for everyone to drop points. Just seems plenty of criticism for Poch was available, so wanted opinions on Klopp.

As for the actual PL title, I think everyone bar City should be embarrassed tbh.

                1. JohnnyMagrinho

I think the vitriol towards Poch was incredibly bloody stupid. Spurs look good, have a good spine and they're creating an identity. If they hold onto their best players they'll only get better and better.

Same can be said for Klopp's Liverpool.

The problem is mate, every bloody football fan is so fickle that as soon as the winds change they're looking the other way. It's incredibly hard trying to have any rational debate with any kind of 'fan' because they only look at the very last result when forming an opinion.

It's this philosophy of 'Want it? Get it NOW!' that everyone seems to live by. No patience, no foresight, no want to cultivate anything. They just want it bought and delivered as quickly as possible.

That's a pretty fair assessment. I definitely thought there was a lot of harsh words said for Poch who had lost to a great side. It is the instant reward culture, I agree.

They won't be holding onto their best players unless they lift their wage controls. That's why Walker left and both Rose and Toby want out. More will surely follow.

a bit of both. Look at VVD today, not much protection but didn't really put a foot wrong. Ofc one of their midfield trio should become a more a CDM type of player to help out TAA/Lovren, but if they get 2 quality defenders in those positions then that Matic-esque player wont be so necessary.

I think that's fair, in the sense that a better CB would have competed with Lukaku more successfully. But, say against a different side who played through the middle well, would they not need a good DM too?

                    2. JohnnyMagrinho
                        8 years, 29 days ago

The first goal was Lukaku being a beast and doing what he does best. That lead to TAA being out-manouvered by a resurgent Rashford, with a brilliant finish to boot.

For the second goal it was horrendous positioning in the box and a complete balls up regarding communication. But it starts from further down the pitch. We didn't press United off the ball anywhere near enough in the first 20-25 minutes and United basically forced us into making mistakes.

We allowed ourselves to be bullied and ended up paying the price.

It's all well and good singling out certain defenders, but in a game like that you need your midfield three to provide the front three with incisive balls AND protect the back four. They did neither. Not even close.

Mane was the only one trying to do anything going forward, other than Bobby who - bless him - ran absolutely everywhere but it wasn't enough.

TAA's inexperience showed in this game but I'm glad that happened - hopefully it's going to bleed him for the future. But Emre Can was absolutely woeful. I just don't even know what he did today. And the least said about Salah the better.

It's a shame because we've been so good lately but that's football - win some you lose some.

The midfield was not at fault for either goals as they both derived from long-balls that bypassed them. They were generally okay today.

The decisive problem is what you completely ignore - the dumpster fire that is Lovren - who was at fault for both goals and Mata's clear chance.

If there is any positive to be taken from the match it is that Klopp's faith in Lovren could finally be severed and he's exiled like Mignolet.

Klopp needs to be more defensive IMO. Not saying park the bus, but if Can is leaving he should get a top defensive midfielder who loves tackling and keeping clean sheets.

Playing an Allegri coached Juve isn't as tough as Mourinho's United at OT? Fair enough, Spurs had 2 away goals in their initial 2-2 draw, but it still required them to either get a draw or beat Juventus, who are a very good side.

Spurs win and that could be a big 3 points for Pool. Still would have a nice 4 points over Chelsea if Chelsea win, but that's not the greatest of cushions. While the CL game was more important for Spurs, I keep hearing how Pool should be 2nd, progression, will challenge for title next season etc. So is this unimportant in that sense?

Yes its unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Progression is about improving the squad which he has undoubtedly done but still needs more work as evidenced by still relying on Lovren

I just don't buy this at all.

Klopp desperately wanted to win that game. Liverpool desperately wanted to that game.

The same can be said for Poch and Spurs.

Maybe on paper there was less to play for but in the dressing room? I really don't think so.

The problem with the United squad is the age of quite a few regulars. Fulls backs will both be 33 next season

I just did not see them in that second half. If Mane made better passes, then Liverpool would have come out with something. Liverpool were very dominant in this game.

Full backs is our biggest issue. It was the same issue for City had last season and so they went out and spent £130m.

Nah, don't see Liverpool struggling for Top 4. Best thing Chelsea fans can hope for is Liverpool get Roma or Shaktar next round to prolong our run in CL.

                  Interesting stat:

Huddersfield is the team with the most transfers in for this week (before today's deadline) in the top 10k:
(% is the percentage of top 10k teams who transferred the player in)
                  Schindler 8.49%
                  VLP 4.80%
                  Mounie 4.62%
                  Lossl 3.42%
                  Zanka 3.42%
                  Pritchard 1.02%
                  Mooy 0.83%

Let's see if they could deliver...

They won't. Transferred in Lossl and benched DDG, but expecting a net gain over GW30 / GW31 given DDG doesn't play next week

I needed to get a gw31 player cos I had 2ft and had to use 1 and Hud were the only team with a decent fixture this week I got Shindler and is on my bench cos I forgot to save my new line-up
