This afternoon we can reveal the 256 managers to make it through to the second round of our open-to-all Fantasy Premier League Cup competition.

Round one took place in  Gameweek 30, where the average score was a record-low 41 points and saw six former champions depart.

Sleepysi, who has a top 5,000 rank, was beaten comfortably 45-28 by BowenArrow, who is 39,664 places behind him. Similarly, Gribude, who is in 8,221 spot, also lost to a lower-placed manager, with Kirton Hoops’s 53,933-ranked troops prevailing.

Mark (rank 47,814) also succumbed to a giant killer with 458,382-placed Khumz defeating him.

Goonerdave’s 40-point score was not enough to overcome 2 Girls 1 Shlup’s tally of 53, while my 1,790-ranked squad lost out narrowly 43-42 to Balldontlie (47,758).

CMIFLFC is another former champion to miss out, having lost 48-34 to Jon Nurse. This was unsurprising given their overall positions, with Jon Nurse in 6,030 place, while CMIFLFC was among the five lowest-ranked managers in the first round  and is currently languishing in 1,975,888 spot.

The four ex-winners to progress to Gameweek 31’s second round include reigning champion TH14 (rank 8,130) who has been handed a kind draw against 224,940 placed Ilovebaps.

A Manager Has No Name has an evenly-matched encounter with horlicks esq. Just 1,284 separates these top 3,000-ranked managers.

However, MCH (rank 99,442) has a far tougher task as he squares up to 1,570 placed The dinkum donuts. Wild Rover is also a second round underdog, as his 99,962-ranked side sits 66,404 places behind opponent Gloria Kanchelskis.

Another manager facing a tough draw is 67,157-ranked graqfreak, who takes on the competition’s highest placed manager thisisdiz, who moves up to 38th spot after scoring an impressive 61 points in Gameweek 30.

Other notable match-ups include a veteran poster clash between colonel shoe (rank 55,207) and Optimus (296,931).

Following his victory over former champion GoonerDave, 2 girls 1 Shlup will be hoping to claim another high profile victim when he takes on our resident tech expert matzi11a (rank 2,662).

The full first round results can be found here, while the second round draw can be found here.

    Howdy,

Already made my free transfer. I'm relying on 8 players (no GKs and hoping walcott manages to recover). No free chip available and I wasn't planning to take any hits either.
However, this Kane's long term injury got me thinking. It will cost me my next free transfer for sure, which is a blow for my long term plans. I believe this event will be a game changer and a lot of hits will be taken.
I also own Mounie & Auba..
Considering this, should I take a hit and replace Kane for a striker who can possibile brings returns in GW31?
    My options are:
    a) Wilson
    b) Tosun
    c) Deeney
All have a decent set of fixtures while Kane's injured. This would also allow me to deploy the extra funds into my midfield, which was already one of my priorieties, except with no hits.

    Any thoughts?

Reposting due to my ongoing uncertainty:

    My team for this week:

    VvD
Salah, Shaqiri, Ibe (?), Siggy (!)
    Firm

FH or fix with transfers? I'll be WCing in GW32

That's a fair point - if you have 2fts you could get 7 or 8 out with a hit or two ... then I think it gets much more borderline. I think I'd still FH with that team and one ft, though, but maybe that's just me.

I would FH if I were you. You could easily have only four starters this week and I'm not sure that's enough. With your WC you can set up a team that should be able to navigate 35.

And he may not. I dunno mate - I think you're right on the borderline. What about your MLs? Are you miles ahead/chasing/etc? Do your rivals have all their chips?

70 points ahead and my rival in 2nd has made 2 transfers according to the little box in the bottom right. Still, that would only give him 6 BGWers at the most. So it's a tough one definitely.

With a lead that big you should definitely play it safe. Only problem is, I'm not sure what safe is in your situation. Just try and mirror you rival, I guess. If you don't think he's FHing, then I wouldn't either. And vice-versa. But if you don't, you definitely have enough of a gap to gamble with at least a -8. But if he FHs and has a blinder and you don't ... Anyway, good luck!

    Alternative strategies for the run-in:

    1. Build team for DGW34 and use TC, free hit 35, WC 36, BB37.
    2. Build team for BGW35, free hit in 34. WC 36, TC/BB in 37/38.

Depends on your team of course, and how happy you are with it going past 31. If you got the likes of Mahrez, Son, Salah, Firmino and some Burnley defence etc, you would probably be in a good position at least until DGW34. This strategy means that you dont have to plan for DGW37 already in 32/33, which is far too long in my opinion, especially in the run-in when so much is going on. Some teams will fight relegation, some will find their way to the beach (City?). Waiting with the WC could really reveal lots of valuable information.

Just wanted to post this as I think many people are set on WC in 32/33 just because everyone else is doing it. This depends on your team! I have played this late WC strategy the past 2 seasons and did very well.

And yes, with option 2. you dont get to play one of TC/BB in a DGW. The most important thing with BB in my opinion, is to play it shortly after the WC when your bench is still strong. Say you use WC in 36, you could plan for specific bench players with a good (home) fixture in 38. I did this last year and got 21 points!

B with Baines (or Coleman). Anyway taking a hit to BGW is not so bad since it will be -2 only (assuming that incoming player gets at least 2 points).

Planning WC team for GW32. Which two to choose from the following:

    a) Willian
    b) Mkhitaryan
    c) Arnautovic
    d) Son

Currently leaning towards a) and b). Will have Hazard and Aubameyang in my WC team.

Valid ponts. Son's short term fixtures aren't great but Kane's absence can be good for Son (at least in FPL wise).

I have a problem for any of the mathematicians on here that would like a good challenge.

How many different combinations from the available players can you get into a team within the rules i.e. only 3 from any team 2 goal keepers 5 defenders 5 midfielders and 3 forwards.

Captains and vice captains would also have to be factored in to the different combinations.

took me exactly an hour to try and work out because I was busy fussing with the '3 player rule' - and I'm not good enough to figure out what that entails unfortunately but can give the amount of team combinations including vice captains and captains.

the figure I got was 1,201,082,213,000 WITHOUT the 3 player rule

        hope it was worth it

Thanks for the effort Viking i really appreciate it.

I think the ultimate answer i am looking for is with the 3 player rule and then after that maybe how many ways can you set up a team to make the problem extra spicy.i.e. Alonso in any of the 5 defender positions etc.etc.

I do realize that this is not an easy question to answer and will add noting really to our understanding of the game just the pleasure of knowing the answer.

I would have thought the number was much larger than 1.2 trillion even without the 3 player rule and the answer of the number with the same players in different combinations of positions must be truly astronomical.

The question came to me after reading about the Shannon number which is a calculation for the lower bound of the game-tree complexity of chess, resulting in about 10 to the power of 120 possible games, to demonstrate the impracticality of solving chess by brute force.

That is a pretty impressive number considering the number of atoms in the observable universe, to which it is often compared, is roughly estimated to be 10 to the power of 80.

I got thin info from the wiki page on the Shannon number.

Cheers! I'm guessing to calculate the 3 player rule you'd have to look at the number of all the positions of players from all 20 teams and then factor that into the total number - it'd be possible to work it out I'm sure, however it'd just require a lot of time and effort...

Will give the wiki page a read too 😉

I do have them all too.
Just wondering if I should expect anything from Mounie/Benteke or just get another blanker (Auba) to catch the price rise before wildcarding next week.

I’d punt on Mounie if I was wildcarding next week

Depends on whether you have your WC for GW32/33 and how many you have for GW31.

        Lossl
        Robertson Ake Bauer
        Salah Shaqiri Walcott Fraser
        Firmino Wilson

going with 10 as it stands.
        I have all my chips.

I would still do A. Points more precious at this point than a 0.1 rise imo

Is there any information on King or Defoe?

Wouldn't want to get either in if there's doubts.

    A. Sterling to Stan and lose 0.3
    B. Kane to King and lose 0.2

    Any thoughts?

Not a no brainer no, hence you need to ask, but it's a good move.

You should bring Rondon in for him then in that case. 😀

So you don’t while away the hours, conversing with the flowers then? 🙂

Maybe don’t get too caught up with the individual stats for who is the best striker for GW31:
    Mounie, Benteke, King?

    Think more simply:
A)Who plays for the more attack minded team?
B)Who is playing against the worst team in the league?

Seems an easy decision to me 😉

      Why not Wilson then?

Safe as in they aren't injured at the moment as far as we know. Not safe as something can always happen before deadline. The closer we get the safer.

Kaku, Auba, Vardy. I would go with Auba

    How's this plan?

    Field 9 players this week
Wildcard GW32/33 to prepare for DGW
Free hit in GW35 for blank fixtures?
