An Alternative Strategy For The Doubles

This week’s re-arranged fixtures announcement revealed that eight teams will play twice in Gameweek 34. This raises the possibility that Gameweek 37 will involve 12 double fixtures.

How should Fantasy Premier League managers react to this news?

One popular strategy, for those with all chips intact, is to use the second Wildcard ahead of Gameweek 32 or 33, deploy a Bench Boost in Gameweek 34, use a Free Hit chip in Gameweek 35’s limited set of fixtures and then fire up the Triple Captain chip in double Gameweek 37.

The advantage of this strategy involves targeting players with two sets of double fixtures in a Wildcard. This ensures that a strong Bench Boost team can be put in place for double Gameweek 34 and the team should be in good shape for double Gameweek 37, when an explosive player like Harry Kane can also be drafted in. The Free Hit chip in blank Gameweek 35  enables this focus on the double doublers.

But is there an alternative approach that could be ideal for those without a Triple Captain chip, as well as those with all their chips?

The Alternative Chip Strategy

  • Starting now, use your transfers (free or otherwise) to bring in players from teams with a good fixture in Gameweek 35. Completely ignore the double in 34.
  • Free Hit in 34 and bring in a full allocation of double Gameweek players.
  • Get your Gameweek 35 players back for 35.
  • Wildcard in Gameweek 36, loading up on double Gameweek 37 players.
  • Bench Boost in 37.

The Case For This Strategy…

This strategy looks strong if you have already used your Triple Captain.

For those with a Triple Captain to play it must be used in a single Gameweek. But perhaps Gameweek 35, when Manchester City play Swansea at home or when Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah plays bottom of the table West Brom could prove a lucrative time to use this. The Egyptian winger did, after all, score 29 points last weekend in a single Gameweek.

One benefit of this approach, particularly for those in the ranking doldrums, is that teams with good fixtures in Gameweek 32 and 33, but no double in Gameweek 34, will likely be overlooked by those wildcarding now.

For example Arsenal have two plum home fixtures in Gameweeks 32 and 33 (STK and SOT), as do Watford (BOU and BUR), but because of their lack of a double in Gameweek 34 they may be ignored by current wild carders.

Liverpool (cry and eve) and Man City (eve and MUN) are two more high-scoring, attacking teams that can be targeted as you prepare for the blank in Gameweek 35 – and once again with no double in Gameweek 34 their players (apart from the omnipotent Salah) will be in very few wildcarding teams.

Another advantage of this approach is being able to cherry-pick a bespoke team just before the first double in Gameweek 34 and then being able to cherry-pick another bespoke team just before the second double in Gameweek 37.

This allows you to fully maximise both doubles and to react much closer to the time with wholesale changes as new information comes to light, such as teams progressing in cup competitions or teams residing “on the beach” and having little to play for. If wildcarding in Gameweek 32 or 33, it may be difficult to react to these emerging trends.

…and the case against

The biggest argument against this alternative strategy is that a bench boost in double Gameweek 37 will be difficult in terms of nailing down 15 players who play twice in quick succession as the season draws to a close.

Another is that there is a far greater chance of a Triple Captaincy chip being a success in a double Gameweek rather than a single Gameweek. Salah is not going to score 29 points every week.

In addition, those using this alternative strategy miss out on the chance of captaining Harry Kane in Gameweek 37, who as we saw last season can be one of FPL’s most explosive players when chasing down the golden boot during a season run in.

Another argument against is that those wildcarding now will easily be able to draft in Arsenal’s top target, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is cup tied for the Gunners Europa campaign. He can easily be shifted to the likes of Jamie Vardy in Gameweek 34, especially for those wildcarding this week who can save a transfer in Gameweek 33.

those who cant TC can easily bench boost in 37 once they wc in 36 with a full 15 man dgw teams

I typed this straight into the community submission form last night and submitted it bleary-eyed at 1.30am. I can safely vouch that the article was no way near as good as you're seeing it now and Jonty really has done an incredible job editing this and getting it up to scratch. It's times likes these (when there is so much going on with the fixture announcements) that you realise how much the FFS team does for the community behind the scenes. Thank you. 🙂

going to use the alternative strategy without the FH chip and instead rely on 4-5 dgw players(1 triple captain) with the rest on good fixtures till 35 then use WC in 36 and bb 37

Great article, especially for those who still have WC,BB,TC,FH intact. I have 'em all.

As I'm having a really average-ish season (again), I may try to use alternative strategy...slowly set up team for 35 and then FH34, TC35 (or even GW38! which could be good for mini-leagues), WC36, BB37.

The biggest advantage of this strategy is that you are setting-up your team for blank/double gameweeks as late as possible which means it is possible to counter (almost) all injuries, bans and maybe even predict rotations waiting to happen.

Downsides - not much, apart from having Kane as TC in GW37... but maybe just maybe a WC in GW37 will bring more points than Kane TC.

Captaining Kane and having 4 extra hand-picked double gameweek players should more than compensate for a Kane TC in 37.

It's a strategy that is worth considering. My main concern though would be that it relies on Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City players who will have big European matches between GWs 32-34, and GWs 35-37 (likely in 2/3 cases).

Well..I had the exact same thing in mind. However, for folks who have all their chips available, It seems either one of the BB or TC might get wasted.

unfortunately i decided to wc on saturday to catch silva, aubamayang and willians price rises which has proved to be a poor rushed decision, but i can still salvage it stick to the bring double dgw players in plan and free hit in 35 hope it works out, if i had waited for the fixtures i would probably go for free hit in 34.
ill get to play TC in a dgw tho so thats something.

Thanks for posting, main points against this are around Liverpool and City I think, surely going to be rotation with Firmino coming back from Brazil for a midday game at Palace, then both playing 3 games in six days for the CL and derbies.

Re Arsenal I am on WC and going to get Aubameyang and Monreal then switch to Lukaku and Soton defender for free. Easily done.

Free hit in 35 allows you to see what sort of teams City are putting out having won the league - if it's the reserves you can get Jesus and Bernardo rather than Aguero and Sterling etc.

Few other points to consider if you haven't played your wildcard yet:

    1) There are likely to be 6 teams with a double in 37 but no double in 34. If you're wildcarding now and loading up on DGW34 players, you're likely to be seriously light on DGW players from these 6 teams in 37. If you're playing BB in 34 and FH in 35, then that leaves just 2 free transfers to address this. Not much wiggle room.

    2) Man City have a tasty double in 37. If wildcarding now, you wouldn't risk bringing in a Man City player for this because you have no idea at this point who will play twice. If wildcarding in 36, you will have much more info on how Pep is setting his team up towards the end of the season and how City are doing in the Champions League ... and so it will be much less risky bring in Man City players for the double.

    1. Pep says
      • 8 Years

If you wildcard in 36, you haven't much clues as to who will play twice either. A transfer can easily be saved in 36 and to have 2 ft's for GW37 to get the lastest hot property in.

by gw 36, you should have enough info about which teams will field their regualr line up and which ones will rotate

  9. Pep says
    • 8 Years
    6 years, 1 month ago

One small problem I see with getting the players for 35 now is that you only have 2 ft's if you're FH'ing in 34 so it wouldn't work for everyone and again injuries can hamper plans quickly and also the state of the league table. You're basically holding onto your blank gw31 team, using 2 ft's to spruce it up for blank gameweek 35 and WC'ing in 36 when no one knows what sort of lineups will be on offer. I don't it maximizes the potential of the wild, just for the sake of the bench boost chip which is so grossly over rated by people..

Good work on the article, I just don't personally like the idea as I see too many pitfalls in the plan.. Let the end of season be the judge I guess.

    1. Pep says
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 1 month ago

Also, gameweek 34 could throw a few spanners in the works for this plan as alot of the teams play twice which means twice the potential for injuries. At least the FH 35 manager can ignore a few slight knocks and hope they'll be back in a fortnight for GW36. The FH 34 manager will have to live with whatever happens his squad during gw34. Granted you've got WC in 36 but things are all but done and dusted by then. I think now is the time to push on up the ranks

The issue with WCing in 34 & FH in 35 is more of an issue for injuries - 3 games for your players to get injured before you can do anything about it

Like the strategy, will most likely go with it.
We could also WC in 35. Get 6-7 players from Arsenal,City,Burnley. Others from teams having good 35,36 fixtures.Four bench players makes it 11-12 DGW 37 players already.. Two FT's in 36 and 37,one hit,and boom,we have 15(without Mo)/14(with Mo) DGW 37 players for BB. TC Kane or Mo in 38,golden boot race would mean decent points.

    Couple thoughts here:

First off well done on thinking of an alternative strategy and not rubbing it in the face of those who have committed to the popular ffs strategy as if they have made a mistake before a ball has even been kicked in anger.

While i dont think this is the best strategy for me i certainly will be watching your season unfold with interest as we have similar ranks.

My main issues are i want to trip cap in a dgw and kane 37 is too good to pass up on.

I worry about getting 11 players out in 37 let alone 15 and evn though you think cherry picking that rotational nightmare is the way to go i think you are walking into a problem i dont want to have.

However i am glad that thete is more than one way to play this. Well done for thinking of one on your own. Good luck

I posted this above in response to the Kane TC point:

They will only cover If they play and thats the problem. I dont think your bboost covers my tripcap

But even if it does the true strategic comparison lies in your trip cap vs my trip cap regardless of week played and so on.

For example if i bboost in 34 and gain 20 and trip cap kane for 45 in 37 then you cant just cover my 45 with your bboost. We also have to look at your single gameweek trip cap score. You need 65 between your two chips to cover me. I think that is less likely to work out in your strategy.

Of course your free hit vs my free hit also comes into play but those are more difficult to measure when played in different weeks.

I have both chips and will be doing FH34, WC36. Currently on BB 37 which means TC Auba 32, 33, 35 or Kun/Salah 35 or punt Kane/Salah in 38.

    FH34 then some combination of

    WC35/36
    BB36/37
    TC35/36/37/38

Are all strategies I'm considering as alternatives to the standard WC33 BB34 FH35 TC37

The beauty of all of these is the additional knowledge gained by holding WC as late as possible, and the FH as late as possible for DGW34 for that matter- who knows whether it'll be Lukaku or Sanchez that will be the main UTD attacking target - or which defenders will be fit for the double up..!

Knowledge particularly useful in terms of Spurs (Kane) and City who have the best DGW37 on paper and could be out of ECL by the time of WC

City aside, I expect Liverpool, United, Spurs and Chelsea to be battling it out. Arsenal possibly too.

Meanwhile Swansea, Southampton, West Ham and Newcastle could be fighting for survival.

    I like it.
I don't have fhc so can't do this myself but think it's better than the groupthink of wc now and bb34.
I just don't see why someone would bb34 loading up on brighton ,bournemouth and southampton players.
Brighton have TOT and cpl ( palace will be up for this one )
    Bournemouth have liv and MUN
    Southampton have CHE and lei.
    Burnley LEI and CHE.
the only decent doubles are for MUN and LEI
    I see more potential with fodder from 3 swansea in gw37 { bou and SOT }
together with your wc players from gw36.
I've seen a lot of rmwc teams and just don't see how someone expects the 5 or so players their getting in from the doublers with poor gw34 fixtures to even tread water in gw37
    Brighton have MUN and mci
    Burnley have ars.
essentially they're getting 9 or so decent doublers, 5 rubbish ones, keeping Salah ( who is away at che in 37 ) and expecting this to compete with a bench boosted team wc'd in the week before.

THEN I remember I had to as I had total dross from GW31 that has taken me from 7k down to 35k in the space of 3 game weeks.

I remember last season there was a debate about using the WC in 34 or 37 and the issue of rotation. Some one did an article that looked at the previous year and surprisingly there was a very small and marginal increase in rotation in 37 over 34, but not as bad as suggested at times here.

It would be good if that article was dug up, or that a new one was done to review rotation between 34 & 37 last season ?

This is how I will play, having used up TC on Kane in wk22. My team with some adjustment looks OK for 32, 33 and 35. The Bournemouth players that Wildcarders will have discarded will be an intriguing differential in the next two fixtures.

    Thanks FPL Virgin.

This is exactly what I've been looking at since the fixture announcement (having previously intended to wildcard in 33).

I feel it's the optimum strategy if, like me, you:
    - have all chips except TC remaining
    - already have 9 or so strong GW35 players (i.e. Liv, Eve, Mci, Bur)

Seems a waste to use chips to bring in a squad very similar to the one I currently have. Can also see value in bringing in Mahrez for the next couple of weeks for a hit (in addition to Aubemeyang).

It's only the rotation situation in 37 that concerns me.

I don't have FH anymore and already activating my WC. My strategy is to have enough team around 7-8 players for GW35 and bring as many FT until GW35 & GW37. TC on 34 and BB on 37. Burnley player could help on this strategy as they have fixtures on GW35.

I will set up around 9 dgw player on GW34 with Auba & Salah complete the starting XI and 4 bench players that play on GW35. Lukaku as TC on GW34.
