Earlier in the week, our recent series of Monitor members’ articles on Wildcard ran the rule over both Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Romelu Lukaku, the two most bought forwards ahead of Gameweek 32.

Next up in our assessment is Riyad Mahrez, the second most bought midfielder ahead of Leicester City’s expected pair of Double Gameweeks.

Despite finding himself out of favour in the early months – due to a lofty 8.5 opening price tag and disappointing previous season – the Algerian has turned back the clock to rediscover the heights of his dominant 2015/16 campaign.

Now sitting fourth among midfielders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) with 161 points, Mahrez has proven himself to once again represent a consistent top-end choice. Meanwhile, double-digit hauls in successive Gameweeks underpin the Algerian’s explosive potential as a differential captaincy option for managers willing to swim against the tide.

With an incredibly obliging run to end the season – including two Double Gameweeks and a slew of favourable matchups (Leicester’s next six fixtures will match them against Brighton, Newcastle, Burnley, Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Ham) – the winger will be a staple among Wildcard squads.

Bailly seems to be template Utd def with (Smalling/Jones). Valencia on the other hand most nailed but expensive. How much disappointing rotation will happen during dgw?

    Sorry, got bottomed:

    DDG Ryan
    Alonso Bailly Christensen Lowton Morgan
    Salah Son Mahrez Willian Gross
    Auba Firmino ----

Barnes or Murray for the last slot?

Value is irrelevant. I can bring in Lukaku and Vardy for Auba and Firmino in GW34 no problem.

    I'll FH GW35.
GW36 I'll sell Gross for King of Swansea and Lukaku for Kane

    And TC Kane in 37.

    So basically:

Murray or Barnes? Money is no object between those two and future plans.

If you had a choice which team’s defenders would you consider for GWs 33 and 35

Before I start this, I’m happy to confirm I’m both bitter and jealous of those with the Free Hit chip intact...

...but since activating the wildcard this week (sans Free Hit) I’ve worked out the chip is the best BY A LONG WAY and ultimately too big a weapon. Too good. Too powerful.

Bench Boost and Triple Captain affect one week, no more. The Free Hit affects multiple weeks, not just the one you use it.

Maybe not in normal weeks, but in 35 (and to a lesser extent, 31) it’s a sensational weapon. Too strong, for me.

I fully admit this looks ridiculous from someone without the chip, but I stand by it. I don’t think any chip outside the wildcard should affect more than one single gameweek.

They will revise the chips next year. They were designed to help the casuals whereas they have just hindered them, as every serious player just stockpiles

I think making you HAVE to play one in first half of season would make it much more interesting.

I have a similar team - while you have Vertonghen, Smalling, Son and Vardy I have Bailly, Kiko, Mkhi and Auba.
Not too sold on Vardy because of his record against teams lower to the bottom, and I think at least one premium attacker is a must.

This is my thinking. And I don't like Willian just because he's such a rotation risk.

It does mean having Matic (or sub 5m 5th mid) in there but I'm okay with that as only want him to play for one game week and a near certain 5 points min.

      1. Slip it like Stevie
        • 9 Years

Willian is a good pick IMO but he is becoming so template that he doesn't help me chasing

Only template on here among the WCers. Remember that the majority of players you're chasing have used chips and are not WCing, so Willian will still likely be a good differential

          8 years, 4 months ago

Yeh well it's basically Lukaku/cheap mid vs Hazard/cheap striker, so doesn't matter where the points come from for me.

However, the main appeal of having Lukaku is that it'd be easier to upgrade to Kane and I can use Auba as a placeholder until 34

Why is everyone on Son and Willian on wildcard? I don't understand this. Play each other this week and both rotation risk. The latter has absolutely no chance of starting all 5 of Chelsea's next games (including fa cup). Pedro will start at least one, maybe two or three.

And Spurs have terrible fixtures. Is Son really going to tear it up against a City side likely playing for the title win that match?

Better options in both sides. They seem to be in everyone's team just because they're a nice price.

I disagree Son is a rotation risk he’s built up a reputation for being one of the best players at the club. Plus for the time his fixtures are tough he’ll likely be playing striker so I won’t be complaining. Then his fixtures are excellent.

I don’t think Son is at much risk tbh. Willian is a risk but I’d be surprised if it was as many as 3 games like you say. Incredible form and has been playing in the starting XI regardless of wether Haz has been playing false 9 or Morata/Gru. Saying that I have neither.

How do you rate Pedro's and Fabregas's seasons so far?

I think they both have been playing regularly because Conte simply doesn't like to alter his team. He trusts the players he's fielding, and right now that trust has fallen to Willian due to superb performances. Fabregas and Pedro on the other hand have completely failed to deliver on Conte's trust. I think Conte has slowly realized that these players do not perform at the required level to fit into Conte's tactical use of them. Pedro is a great combinational player that understands how to move off the ball and when to release the ball. Fabregas is a great passer and a creative outlet.

Willian has had to perform at a higher level than Fabregas and Pedro to even get a chance at playing. That effort has lead to a 7 game streak of starting. In around half of those games, he's been their best player. I think Conte has realized that while Willian is not the type of player that he wants in his team, he's still performing at twice the level of the alternatives.
