Earlier in the week, our recent series of Monitor members’ articles on Wildcard ran the rule over both Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Romelu Lukaku, the two most bought forwards ahead of Gameweek 32.

Next up in our assessment is Riyad Mahrez, the second most bought midfielder ahead of Leicester City’s expected pair of Double Gameweeks.

Despite finding himself out of favour in the early months – due to a lofty 8.5 opening price tag and disappointing previous season – the Algerian has turned back the clock to rediscover the heights of his dominant 2015/16 campaign.

Now sitting fourth among midfielders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) with 161 points, Mahrez has proven himself to once again represent a consistent top-end choice. Meanwhile, double-digit hauls in successive Gameweeks underpin the Algerian’s explosive potential as a differential captaincy option for managers willing to swim against the tide.

With an incredibly obliging run to end the season – including two Double Gameweeks and a slew of favourable matchups (Leicester’s next six fixtures will match them against Brighton, Newcastle, Burnley, Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Ham) – the winger will be a staple among Wildcard squads.

Worth having Mikhi in for next 2 then change to Son for GW34?

Yes. I prefer Mkhi's fixtures of STK + SOU over Son's fixtures of che + stk.
But do keep in mind that Mkhi might be subbed off somewhat early (60th min maybe) in either or both games due to the EL.

Slight rotation risk. I prefer this strategy with Auba/Lukaku, because Auba is ineligible for Europe.

My team is good I think anyway. Or will be come gw34. Just this weeks transfers were silly. No point in using the free hit now.

Had a little tinker; I may be looking at WC-ing to this:

    DDG / Ryan
    Alonso / [Bailly or Smalling] / Lowton / Morgan / [4.4]
    Salah / Mahrez / Son / Willian / [4.5 or Gudmundsson]
    Lukaku / Firmino / Murray

The line-up above gives a lot of flexibility, e.g:

    A) If I go with a 4.4 DEF, GW34: Murray > Vardy in 1 transfer
    B) If I go with any price defender, GW34: Murray > Vardy in 2 transfer

Should Kane magically re-appear, I have money ITB to afford him. Even if I had Vertonghen in the above [4.4] spot, I could still do Lukaku > Kane in 1 transfer.

If I wanted both Kane & Lukaku, it could be done easily, wither at the expense of Lukaku or 2 transfers.

    Any suggestions, or alternative shouts?

*Providing I wasn't also upgrading Murray > Vardy in the same go.

I can see the benefit of Murray over the next few including the DGW, I just dont get why you would get him in to sell before GW34. If thats the plan then surely Aubameyang, but even then I like his GW34.

I am on a WC, with a FH saved for 35. Stan is a GW32 and 33 player only. I think its hard to call the cheapie for GW34 at the moment so leaving the choice till then. Same as I am considering swopping Vardy for Jesus and bringing Vardy in for 34.

I think Firm and Auba both have good single gameweeks though. I could do Firm to Murray and upgrade Pope and Christensen but I am not sure Murray is a great pick though.

That's a fair point mate. I'm put off by the notion of old Glen having two matches in one week, so probably want to avoid that.

In that case, Vardy/Gudmundsson/4.4 is probably fine. That 4.4 spot could even be taken by TAA, if Gomez is out...

More-so in the scenario where I had a premium defender over the next two, instead of one of the [4.4] options. E.g. Monreal/Mustafi/Azpi/anyone.

Which is great for 34, but come on you can use those two in 32 and 33 as well! So use them!

I'm just brainstorming. The extra premium defender pick is more of a differential pick to spice it up. Lowton/Morgan are of course playable, but could Azpi get more over the next few, for example? It's possible.

Thank you for the suggestions though - I am listening.

Well it becomes more specific that way and most on here have wildcards active, thats why we are still tinkering well into this break.

How does your team look for GW34? Can you bench boost 34, FH 35 and TC37? Or are you closer to FH 34, BB37 and TC some other gameweek?

    DDG - Ryan
    Smalling - Mustafi - Alonso - Lowton - Morgan
    Mahrez - Salah - Willian - GroB - Gudmund
    Lukaku - Auba - Barnes

Why is the boat race now again on a Saturday? The last two years it was on a Sunday. I only see that now.

If I had known that, I would have taken the bus from Stuttgart (Germany) to London. My travel company only offers a London trip once a year and that would have been today. Without the boat race there would have been no point in walking through the cold London (a 13 hours bus trip to London and then 13 hours back again).

    Just checking...(scenario FH34)

If taking hits for BGW35 players, they effectively cost:

    -2 if confirmed in GW35,
    0 in GW33, and
    +2 in GW32

Have I calculated that right? Just want to make sure nobody wastes their FH in 35 without this vital info 🙂

B, because 3/4 of A are rotation risks. Shame to drop Alonso, though, but you'll be annoyed if he's your only starting defender in GW34. It's a wildcard. Play it safe.

My issue with B is that it requires committing to two free transfers ahead of 34.
Monreal over Mustafi for sure. If I go for Arsenal, it'd better be an attacking option.

Risky to gamble, because there is nothing you can do if Heaton comes back for the second dgw match which would be the worst case scenario.

He's past it, but in his defence, winning Champions League with Porto was pretty good.

I think I could manage City to the title, or inherit a Barca squad that won the Champions League before I came with Messi in it and win it again, or win the Bundesliga with a Bayern side that again, wrre European champions before arrival.

To me, managers need to make a club over achieve to be great. Or, if they have a huge club and budget, dominate for a prolonged period

Think that stat's been manipulated a bit - not by yourself but it does very conveniently provide some sort of excuse for Man Utd when the reality is they've spent just as obscenely as City over the past few years (just not as effectively or efficiently).

Do agree with your last point though. They'll need to be looking elsewhere for a solution soon imo.
