We continue our series of Monitor members’ articles on Gameweek 34 targets by assessing Brighton and Hove Albion schemer, Pascal Gross.

Although Mohamed Salah has redefined the term “successful debut season”, the German’s rookie campaign deserves its share of recognition.

Following a summer arrival from FC Ingolstadt, Gross has proven himself a standout candidate among budget midfield options. The playmaker has quickly earned a reputation as a premium creative force at the Premier League level, racking up some of the most impressive creativity metrics of any player.

Moreover, with two Double Gameweeks – one confirmed for Gameweek 34, and the latter expected to fall in or around Gameweek 37 – still to come this season, Gross is set to remain at the forefront of plans, with or without the Wildcard at our disposal.

      42% gross and barnes
      29% gudmundsson and barnes
      25% gudmundsson and murray
      4% gross and murray

Im going with the most popular

Anyone thinking of using free hit in 34? I already have 10 players for 35 and could bring in a nice differential like Hazard or Alli.

There are a few budget options to help teams with low TV. Plenty of defenders around 4.5m. Gross and Gudmanson in midfield. Murray and Barnes up top. Sacrifice one premium for a budget and the rest of your team should do fine.

    On wildcard, Monreal + Auba + ...
    A) Mkhi ?
    B) Gross ?
    C) Mkhi for gw32, then switch to Gross for gw33 and dgw34 ?
    D) Mkhi for gwks 32 and 33, then Gross for dgw34 ?

I think Arsenal's fixtures may have them scoring goals and Mkhi should be involved
On the other side, Gross has been important for his team and he should take part in assists or goals, although I don't expect them to score as easily or as many as Arsenal.
In gw33 though Brighton play Huddersfield which may be a strong fixture for Gross to return points.

Exactly the same dilemma, I've gone for Mkhi currently, should get a full 90 v Stoke and at least 60 v Southampton. I'm trying not to allow my Arsenal bias to come into play here though, im going to the Southampton match this season so would love to have Mkhi in my team if he produced points, it may be Gross is just as good an option though and it would be one less move to worry about. That said Brighton fixutres after Palace are truly awful.

      1. Duffy Dunk
        • 9 Years

I expect many to have Gross in their teams in gw33 vs HUD, so a full match Gross appearance compared to a limited Mkhi appearance may strengthen Gross's case to be in the team from gw33.
At the moment I'm more set on having Mkhi for gw32 and then having assessed them both, deciding if I do the switch for gw33, or just for dgw34, or not at all.
If let's say Arsenal beat CSKA 5-0 in the first leg, Mkhi could play more in gw33 and not play in the 2nd EL leg.

This is my plan too, I actually prefer Burnley fixtures in the double and for the remainder of the season so might opt for Gudmundsson instead for 34 as a differential. Although popular on here, he won't be in general.

For a second let's forget that dgw34 exists.

Would we even be considering half of the players we are with BB34 in mind?

Dgw teams in 34 are largely incompatible with 35. Popular bench fodder in 34 are largely incompatible with 37. In short, over-investment in 34 compromises the rest of the season. For the sake of maybe a 15-20 points bench boost.

Meanwhile teams like Liverpool and Arsenal have exciting players on form who are compatible with fixtures across the rest of the season.

Setting up a wildcard team now with FH34 and BB37 in mind allows us to stock-up on exciting players with exciting fixtures - and some decent value fodder who have plenty to play for and good rotation opportunities.

FH34 allows us to be defensive by focussing on the main dgw options like Lukaku, Willian, Vardy etc - or progressive by punting on Sanchez and Hazard etc. No additional money need be spent on the bench. FH34 treats it as the aberration it is.

Main downside is TC in a SGW - but there are some tasty opportunities for Salah. And I'll be captaining Kane in 37 in order to reduce the risk of falling behind too much if he hauls.

    Surely worth considering?

    1. zotter
      • 16 Years
      7 years, 8 months ago

I wouldn’t categorise arsenal as enticing due to the EL. It’s onky Liverpool who are a worry and you can accommodate a couple in a BB34 side in WC

      Leicester have great fixtures

Fair comment that there is a rotation risk with Arsenal.

But I see Aubameyang and Mustafi playing regularly. Happy to punt on Mhiki getting a regular 70 minutes most games too.

It's not just about Arsenal and Liverpool though. With careful planning, you can essentially get a team with 10-11 really good fixtures every week through to 37.

Yes, definitely worth considering. I chose not to go down that road because of rotation concerns with some of the exciting teams like Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal. I've chosen to get a good base of double doublers, then add the seasoning in 36 and 37.

And my wildcard with have DDG, Alonso and Son as well as Mahrez.

There is also WC32, FH35 and BB37 strategy that I feel is the best one at least for us who lost TC Kane chip earlier.

I had been thinking about writing an article with examples of different strategies and
expected points to be compared. Yet there seems to be consensus and template only for gw34 strategy. Perhaps I will do it later when we have other templates. Anyway, here is my strategy and current wc draft team:

      Lloris / Dubravka
Valencia, Smalling, Morgan, van der Horn, Robertson*
      Salah, Son, Mahrez, Willian, King
      Aubameyang*, Lukaku, Vardy

The plan is to manage with these players next two weeks and then transfer Auba* + Robbo* > Ayew + Alonso (possibly Smalling > Azpi -4pts)

After FH35 is time to think again and consider for example Kaku > Kane.

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

That is absolutely an option too.

I am quietly confident that my wildcard team would have a decent 34. If I did FH35, it would really be for the additional City players.

As you say, a matter of weighing up the possible points-spread across different strategies. Would certainly value an article that takes a closer look.

Chilwell. Robertson. Mee (Van Hoorn. Dunk)
    Mahrez. Salah. Sterling. Stanislas (Young)
    Firmino. Vardy. Lukaku

    GW33: Sterling - Son

I'd be worried about Heaton sharing duties with Pope with the world cup coming up. I think Manchester United have the best double and you can do better than Young as your 3rd option. I'd downgrade from your forward line and spread the funds. Chilwell, van der Hoorn and Dunk are poor if you are bench boosting in 34.

I agree the backline is weak but the points ceiling for the forwards is much higher right? The odds of one of the in-form mids or forwards getting a goal is far than the defenders getting a CS. What do you think?

        1. Mina Threat
          • 14 Years

I just think that if you are building to bench boost then forwards have the worst value in the game and it makes sense to limit how much you spend on them unless you are going to captain them or really fancy them due to form/fixtures. To me that means Auba in 32 and 33 and Lukaku in 34. Barnes and Murray are in better form than Vardy and Firmino is enough of a rotation risk for me to pass.

My primary thought at the time of building this team was to get max points and that includes BB in GW34 or may be even TC. Will see how it goes.
As I said Firmino to Barnes in GW33 as I understand that he is a rotation risk and it helps me upgrade Stanislas to Willian who has a higher points ceiling with his double.

I am torn between Auba and Lukaku to be frank. Lukaku for GW34 for sure.

Any suggestions for the 5th mid and/or the defenders?

I like Gross as a 5th mid as it allows Lukaku to Kane and Gross to 5.0m mid in GW36. (If Kane is not fully fit for 34)

Unfortunately at 6.0 Gross is too expensive! Only way I can manage that is by downgrading Firmino and I feel he is a good bet against CRY

Evening all. I’m currently torn between these two options. No Free Hit. Any thoughts?

    a) 10/11 DGW’ers for 34 and triple captain Mahrez or Lukaku. Bench Boost 37 with 13-15 DGW’ers.

    b) Bench Boost 34 so I can TC Kane when he’s chasing the Golden Boot in 37... but six or seven players with just one game in Bench Boost 34.

It would be triple Burnley, Salah... plus the four on the bench... then one transfer in 35 to get nine out. Maybe a hit to make ten, as long as they have a 37 double.

Ok so I have all my chips and on a WC, intend to use 2 FT on GW34 and FH GW 35.

With that in mind thoughts on this WC please

      DDG / Ryan

      Lowton / Valencia / Duffy / Christensen / Morgon

      William / Haz / Salah / Mahrez / Gross

      Barnes / Vardy / Aubameyang

Thought I would try and squeeze Hazard in to my WC team.

        Option 1: With Hazard
        Christensen
        Gudmondssen, Hazard
        Vardy
0.3itb and no idea how to find the 0.6 extra I need for Auba > Lukaku in 2GW's

        Option 2:
        Alonso
        Gross, Willian
        Firmino

        GW34 Auba & Firmino > Vardy & Lukaku
