After three highly competitive rounds there are now just 64 managers left in our open-to-all Fantasy Premier League Cup competition.

Round three was particularly notable for the giant-killing exploits of 61,873-placed norman conquest. He defeated the round’s highest-ranked manager, thisisdiz, whose score of 57 saw him slip from 48th to 64th in the overall standings.

Next up for Norman Conquest is a more evenly matched encounter with Beetlejuice, who sits in 75,077th spot.

Thisisdiz’s defeat means that Leaf is now the competition’s best placed manager, with an overall position of 55. He saw off djman102 in round three to set himself up with a head-to-head against 134,999-placed ChrisVD.

Always Captain Kun is the only other round three survivor to boast a top 100 rank. He is now preparing his 63rd-placed troops for battle with 64,726-ranked Le Tigre in a bid to reach the last 32.

Round four’s lowest-placed manager, TD7242, who sits in 599,904th spot, will be hoping to emulate Norman Conquest’s exploits for his tie with top 3,000-ranked Batmaniac.

As will 391,603rd-placed jaycar25 for his encounter with 802-ranked AK, who is one of only four top 1,000 managers left in the competition.

The fourth of these high-flyers is 704th-placed horlicks esq.. He takes on 2EyedTurk, who is 32,496 places behind him in the overall standings.

The full second round results can be found here, while the third round draw can be found here.

    A) Auba + Vardy + Son -> Lukaku + Kane + Arfield
    -4

    B) Auba + Mustafi -> Kane + Dunk

    C) Auba + Mustafi -> Lukaku + Vertongen

With A) i would be stuck with Mustafi.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

How much does ownership matter to you at this stage of the season?

How closely do you follow ownership trends and use them as the basis of your transfer and team selection decisions. This is particularly pertinent during the season run in when there are high ranks to either aim for or preserve.

An example discussed on last night's Scoutcast was whether to field FPL's most owned goalkeeper, David De Gea, this weekend, even though he has an awful fixture.

Another example is Lukaku over Sanchez. The former is highly owned, but last week - and perhaps in week's to come the Chilean may outscore him.

Which high owned v low owned decisions have you faced recently and are there any other examples like Lukaku and Sanchez where ownership may be a factor, for better or worse?

This! I play the game for fun, and want to pick the players I want to... Part of the fun of playing FPL is doing your own research on players! Ownership? I wouldn’t care one bit... Usually high owned players (like Salah for instance) are in my team regardless, but I would never ever look into players’ ownership and play the game accordingly!

The lower you are the more you need to find differentials with low ownership. Sanchez is a perfect example. I'm gonna get him in for 34 and TC and bet he does better than Lukaku and Kane to get a big rank boost. If it doesn't work so be it but risks must be taken late in the season.

I pick my players based only on the points I expect them to get, ownership means nothing to me at any stage of the season.

At least not general ownership. Towards the business end of the season there is a slight chance I might make moves based on those in my mini league if it comes to cash.

The focus on ownership has always baffled me.

Make a decision on who you think will score more. If DDG is highly owned, then it's a chance to overtake a lot of people.

I agree it raises the stakes, but I don't understand why it would change your decision.

I'm of the school of thought that you play your own game generally and pick the best players. This is the same throughout the season. You'll win some and lose some (and often think sane as crowd) but you go with who you think will do best.

That said, it's only now that I would consider risk minimisation vs mini league rivals from a leading position. But not overall ownership necessarily.

I don't care about ownership till about GW 30.

Then if I'm at a decent rank I try to cover the obvious captains and highly owned players going into the blanks and DGWS and throw in some explosive differentials.

Usually ignore but if I am undecided between two options for captains I will usually choose the more highly owned / more popular choice

Not right, but that's just what I do.

    9. Cok3y5murf
      • 9 Years

I only look at effective ownership, i.e., when choosing my captain. But again, if I completely disagree with the popular choice, I won't go for it.

I wouldn't look at ownership for Lukaku vs Sanchez though. They're both big players and play for the same team, so I'd just go for whoever I personally think is the better pick.

So unless captaincy is a factor, ownership means nothing to me.

      Morning Jonty.

It matters most at this stage of the season, as the rush to bench boost a viable squad of players tends to lead to similarities between squads.

I still think that people forget that the whole team (and in the case of BB, the squad) acts as its own differential. Two identical teams but with Arnautovic instead of, say, Bernardo Silva would have looked completely interchangeable, and both equally viable, in GW 32, but the former would have 10 point swing in its favour.

Captaincy is an issue too. I captained Jesus in one of the DGWs last season because Sanchez was on a bit of a barren spell leading up to the GW in question. But Sanchez outperformed Jesus and most people captained him. The 15 or so points that this decision cost me also cost me top 10k and my mini-league.

So I think that the differentials are still differentials for a reason and the minor differences are amplified by the fact that we don't pick 1-2 players, we pick 11-15 and have differing team values. I still think that chasing differentials and ownership for their own sake is a dangerous game and would probably only do so in GWs 37 and 38 in order to gamble or consolidate my overall or mini-league position.

You're still more likely to choose Salah because of form though, then fixtures. If Salah blanked 3 games in a row and was playing terribly with bad fixture and still had 60% ownership we'd drop him in a heartbeat

ownership should only be considered if your targeting a certain rank that is almost out of reach when two players are very similar in expected points, otherwise best to just pick the better player

'Pick players that score the most points'

This phrase gets used time and time again but its stating the bleeding obvious isn't it? We don't try to pick players that won't score points do we.

The matter of ownership comes into play when you are trying to choose between a couple of very good options who could both do well. Taking a punt on Sanchez for example because he is lowly owned is a risky move but it can pay off big and propel you up the rankings. Ownership then is very important at the end of the season depending on the level of your ambition.

It should be stating the obvious but it's not.

Just look at the Salah captaincy. There were people on here who thought Aubameyang would score higher than Salah, but still went with Salah for captaincy due to ownership.

Like I said at the end there it depends on peoples ambition. Ambitious managers would have gone for the differential but with the season Salah is having you'd have to be very brave.

Absolutely. People look at ownership out of fear. Whereas I go for the person I think will score highest without any fear of the potential negative consequences of it going wrong.

If for some strange reason I though Rondon would score highest I would captain him over Salah knowing that if Salah tears it up my rank is going to plummet.

I don't think you can ever be so confident that you 'know' Aubameyang would have scored more points than Salah. I think it was a differential opportunity because it was one of those situations that could go either way.

If you play without caring about your rank, then you could do that. That's your way of playing and it's fair. But if you do care about rank, effective ownership has to be considered a bit.

I hit 25k by GW11, which was above most people here. Then I had a series of captain fails - not bad choices, but they just happened to not be the most popular choice and that really hurt my progress and I've been stuck at 25k ever since.

So those negative consequences you're talking about actually happened to me and even though I've corrected it now, the damage had already been done 🙂

Expected points matter, but in order to catch in ml it is good to know what you are competing against. The utterly most stupid thing to do would be fielding de Gea against MCI (unless for his save and bonus points) because of high ownership and same time be searching for a no "good risky" differential elsewhere.

Mahrez and Vardy might be another similar pair where people may decide depending on ownership.

I'm hoping not owning or playing certain players can give me a rank boost this game week.

I'll be benching De Gea (44.3%) and Bailly (who could be benched anyway) therefore having no players in the Manchester Derby.

Pep has said City will rotate so Otamendi (28.5%), KDB (24.6%), Sterling (18.8%) or Silva (11.5%) could be at risk.

United and City ownership is high, so if it's something like 1-1 with some low owned players like Gundogan (0.9%), Bernado Silva (1.5%), Martial (2.6%) or Sanchez (2.9%) in the FPL involvements that would be a great result.

Throw in a benching for Firmino (48%) in the early game and those who have wildcarded and ditched their City and Non-Salah Liverpool assets could be in for a great week 😉

I really hate having so many of the same players as my mini-league rivals.

So much so that as I dropped to 4th (out of 4) last week I’m even considering ditching Salah for the run-in to try and make up ground.

They all have him but I’m on WC this week (they’ve all played theirs) and have all my chips so hoping a different strategy (TC34 FH35 BB37) with different players might do the trick. Two of them have used their FH in 31 and some TC already used up.

My only option or just suicide?

Salah might just get rested at Everton this week in between CL games?

I've touched on this before and thus my namesake was born.

It's not necessarily that I'll pick players with the highest ownership simply because they have the highest ownership, it's that later in the season ownership of players better correlates with likely future FPL performance because we have more information from earlier in the season.

Other thoughts on ownership would take too long to type out, but I've been massively aware of it this season in relation to where I'm likely to lose/gain ground on other teams around me. I'm top 500 so must be doing something right. And no it's not just about having highly owned players. I haven't owned DDG once.

    22. JasonG123
      • 12 Years

I think it is a fallacy both to pick players because they have high ownership and to pick players who have low ownership to make up ground.

The reality is that the better players will tend to be more heavily owned but generally we should be ignoring ownership.

The only time I pay any consideration to ownership is when looking at a player's effective ownership (% owned + % captained) - and I don't look at it to determine whether to pick or captain the player, I only look at it to determine whether I should be rooting for the player (e.g. if Kane's effective ownership around my rank is 105% and I haven't captained him then I know to root against him).

      1. JasonG123
        • 12 Years

I should add though - ownership may be an indication about whether the player is a good option (in certain circumstances) or it might indicate that they are a casual pick - so this is relevant information for me. But we shouldn't be picking players because of high/low ownership just because of ownership.

Only in 50/50 decisions especially when picking a captain. You can't take risks not having or not capping a highly owned player unless the alternative has a very high likelyhood of out scoring them.
However, I do make decisions based on ownership in ML rather than overall %

think live ownership is more relevant at season end

I will consider ownership but not make it the sole basis or the first thing I look at when making ,my decision more of a tie breaker , eg DDG is one where ownership influenced me this week but have dunk so covered , so safe option is not play Ryan for me

Mahrez and Vardy - ignored Vardy's higher ownership as had Mahrez who on lower ownership but Mahrez higher ceiling , gets bonus plus CS point and Vardy generally does not score above single digits

Well its up to your own interpretation on a case by case basis. But with 2 similarly priced options going with the popular option makes sense. As the crowd only need to be right to win. If you go with the differential you have to hope that both you are right, AND that the crowd are wrong aswell, in order to come out on top.

This is one of the few sensible replies on this HT imo.
With so many factors to consider, surely ownership plays a part to. It plays a part when deciding who to bench, who to bring in and who to ship out. And just like Rumour points out, in the instance where a choice leaves you with both you being right and other being wrong, its allways sensible to consider ownership.

Worrying about ownership is very defensive. Have courage in your convictions.

If you believe a highly owned player is gonna underperform, use that as an advantage over the rest of the field.

Not picking a highly owned player can be a differential in the same sense as having a low owned player.

It effects my transfer decisions. I avoid highly owned players as they have less potential to rise and more to drop although FPL shenanigans have somewhat nullified that this season. When picking my team it has no effect.

    *different strategy alert*

Is there a reason why nobody is talking about FH-ing in 37?

I've only got BB and FH left, but thinking about BB in 34 and FH in 37.

    Pros:
+ perfect XI in 37 with maximum knowledge
+ I can set the team up better for 36 & 38, as I don't have to concentrate on 37 (e.g. Liverpool, Palace, Burnley all suit this)
    + I've already got quite a few GW35 players

    Cons:
    - BB in 34 with only 11 DGW players
    - only 9 players in 35 (-4)
    - My head hurts from planning it

Is it worth it, if I end up with a BB team in GW34 that looks like this (* denotes SGW player):

    DDG Ryan
    Mustafi* Bailly Morgan Tark Lowton
    Salah* Mahrez Willian Cork Milivojevic*
    Auba* Vardy Kane (c)

And a GW35 like this (transferring in Silva + Firmino for a -4):

    Mustafi Tark Lowton
    Salah Silva Milivojevic Cork
    Auba Firmino

Bench: DDG, Ryan, Morgan, Willian, Kane, Bailly

That actually a very good idea.. and exactly why each person needs to consider a strategy based on their team and not follow the herd

I like your BB team too. The Arsenal players, Mili X1 may not be far off the Burnley, Brighton BB x2 for others

        Cheers.

I've been burnt in the past aiming to get 15 DGW players for BB, and it's rarely worth it, especially as the cheaper players will be stinking up my team for the rest of the season as I won't want to waste a transfer on them.

The main reason people aren't going to FH in 37 is because it would be very hard to have a full team of DGWers in 34 and a full team in GW35. In fact its impossible so why give up the opportunity to get more games by using the FH in 34 or 35.

      1. Pegboy
        • 15 Years
        8 years, 1 month ago

        Thanks for the reply.

The main reason is the opportunity to fully maximise 37. Yes you lose out slightly on 34 & 35 (though it's debatable how much given everyone will keep Salah, it looks like I'd miss out on 4 'games' over the two weeks). You also get slightly better 36&38 teams, as you can forget about frantically scrambling for 37 players.

As I said, I'm not 100% set on this, but the opportunity to get a perfect XI in 37 (and have 3.9 fodder on the bench...) is an interesting one.

It's not a strategy I'd use if I had TC left though.

I don't have TC either but you can still plan a good 37 side before hand and get maximum fixtures in 34 and 35. I think the ability to start a fresh team in 37 is still just as susceptible to rotation so I don't think there will be any major gain. To me 34 or 35 is the best time to FH

          1. Pegboy
            • 15 Years
            8 years, 1 month ago

I don't doubt there will be rotation in 37; it's the ability to plan a good team from now that I doubt, but I may be wrong.

Is the trade off of a few less games of Brighton defenders and maybe Auba instead of Lukaku in 34, worth it for complete knowledge about injuries, suspensions, form and (to some extent) likely rotation? Can I use that to make up the 15-30points loss I might take in 34/35? Feels possible in a DGW.

I think 15-30 point loss is accurate and significant. I can't see you hauling that back with more recent knowledge in GW37. We will still all have the main 'obvious' players who score the points.

Are you planning to have Liverpool players for their juicy fixtures in 36&38?

If so, that will be a lot of £ on the bench in 37 (or less DGW players, which then offsets 34)

Yeah I have the 3 chips used (WC was used last week)
I'm looking at TC in 34. I'll have 11 i think playing DGW but I think TC on that week too just helps boost it.

But I am very tempted with the FH in 37 rather than too much emphasis on catering the GWs leading up to it in order to use the BB

Spurs, Lei and Manu have decent dgws in 34 and 37 so could get 9 from those teams this week and that's both dgws more or less sorted leaving FH for 35

        • 15 Years
        8 years, 1 month ago

Fair point, but it would mean having 9 from those teams now, which I wouldn't have without major hits.

Also, my main point was having 'coverage' of 9DGW players (you're having to pick 4 games in advance...), isn't the same has having freedom to pick a perfect XI when 37 begins.

Ohhh, my first ever hot topic *blushes*

It's mentioned above, but you should consider this strategy if you have Burnley and Liverpool players. You'll be flogging a lot of them for your 37 DGW team, to then want them back again afterwards. Admittedly, you can just bench Burnley players, but it'll require some careful planning.

      Liverpool + Burnley fixtures:

      36: STO & BRI
      37: che & ars
      38: BOU & BRI

It’s a viable plan and good use of the most powerful chip we have (FH). Question to you is if you can use the 4FTs between now and 37 to build a better BB team in 37; and instead play your FH in 34?

I don't think it's a good idea. By GW37 so many matches will be dead rubbers that managers will be giving fringe players and kids a run-out. Some key players will be focused on the upcoming World Cup and rested.

I also only have FH and BB left and I've decided to stick to a GW35 FH and GW37 BB.

Rough plan, starting with current team
      =============================

      Dubravka - Foster
      Alonso - Simpson - Tarkowski - Hegazi - Bauer
      Salah - Mane - Stanislas - Choupo - Doucoure
      Vardy - Firmino - Lukaku

GW33 - Stanislas, Choupo and Firmino to Willian, Son and Barnes (-8 hit)
GW34 - Foster to De Gea (gives me 9 DGWs plus Salah & Mane)
      GW35 - FREE HIT
      GW36 - Lukaku to Kane
GW37 - Barnes, Doucoure, Hegazi and Bauer to Abraham, A King, Mawson and 1 x premium DGW defender (gives me 13 DGWs for bench boost plus Salah & Mane)

I have no TC, but can get 11 out in GW35 with a transfer spare too...

      So my plan is

      GW33 Quaner>Burnley striker gives me 11 for GW35 4-4-2
DGW34 Freehitting - Salah plus DGWers. Frist sub DGW player.
GW35 One FT 11 out for free plus a tweak if needed
      GW36 Wildcard
      DGW37 Bench Boost

Effectively two wildcards for each double, although my GW33 and GW35 scores may be a bit below par compared to others.

i agree, but about 4 years ago that argument was definitely being made by some, hazard is a player who is absolutely brilliant on the ball, and in space maybe one of the best ever, however he completely vanishes from games unlike the two greats

Many did like to say he will get there one day. They say that about lots of players. "the next Messi" is never the next Messi.
I agree with ya. He is an absolute class act but he's not the type of player that's going to grab the game by the balls and force his magic onto it. He is a laid back player that likes to be part of the team play not the focal point. I like his style.

'laid back' to me means he has natural ability, likes playing football but isnt really arsed about doing it week in week out at the highest level. Messi was born with more natural ability than Ronaldo but ronaldo worked on his weaknesses continually, everyday to be the player he is now. Haz seems happy coasting it.

I have always felt haz has the ability but not the application. Hazard has often spoken himself of being compared to them but he doesnt seem to be doing anything about it and was quite happy to throw away an entire season ofhis career under jose. he has barely made a dent in the CL and he's 26 now

Better downgrade to enable Kane in GW34?

    A) Willian ➡️ Lingard (No Kaku)
    B) Groß ➡️ Gudmundsson (Have Barnes)

    Cheers! 🙂

First WC draft. Anyone care to give some suggestions on how it looks / any changes needed? I plan to BB 34, FH 35 & TC 37.

    DDG - Ryan
    Davies - Robertson - Tarkowski - Lowton - Simpson
    Salah - Mahrez - Son - Gross - Kennedy
    Auba - Kane - Barnes

1.1 ITB to do Aub - Lukaku next week.

Wouldn't mind trying to get Sanchez in instead of Lukaku somehow but think it's easier just getting Lukaku in.

    Gotta love Crouch.
On the subject of Ronaldo’s goal. “There’s only a few of us that can do that”.

        Why lol?

£54.17 on Man City before kick off
£43.33 on Liverpool before kick off but after the Man City bet
£50 free bet in play on the draw immediately after kick off

Enjoy the £32.50 guaranteed (with bigger returns if one side goes two up and then doesn't win, as with Spurs v Juve first leg)

I only get offered £10 free bets nowadays from them, probably due to the couple of years I spent abusing the £50 ones 🙁
