We’re now just one match from the Premier League title potentially being won, and that fact (or something in the water) seems to have released a maverick streak in at least one of our Scouts.

The ‘expert’ panel of Fantasy Football Scout regulars Mark, Paul and Jonty and Career Hall of Fame dignitary Peter Kouwenberg have mostly gone for the usual suspects this weekend.

Mostly…

Jonty, in particular, seems to have scrunched up the template and lobbed it in the vague direction of the Fantasy bin.

How else to explain his decision to place this season’s points-sponge Mohamed Salah only fourth among his midfield selections?

After tonight’s injury scare at Anfield, it leaves us wondering if Jonty had some kind of premonition.

Nonetheless, it’s a big call, as is his placement of Wes Morgan above Chelsea’s defender-in-name-only Marcos Alonso in his backline picks.

Those two decisions alone should prompt bickering aplenty, relegating the Harry Kane first or second debate to a surprising best supporting role.

All will be revealed in the Scout Picks article later in the week, but for now, here are our panel’s selections and the reasons behind them for you to pick over at your leisure.

Paul Says…

Along with the host of usual suspects, backing Chelsea could be a good move this weekend.

Despite their downturn in form, Antonio Conte’s men have fired more shots (82) and efforts in the box (49) than any side in their last four home matches. Meanwhile, their visitors West Ham are ranked bottom for goals conceded (12) and big chances against (14) in their last four road trips.

With that in mind, Willian and Marcos Alonso get the nod in my squad.

They are ranked first and second for shots on goal for the Blues over the last four, with 13 and nine respectively, whereas Eden Hazard has mustered just three efforts by comparison.

I’m also doubling up on a pair of Watford players who were both among the points last weekend.

The Hornets have won three and drawn one of their four home matches under Javi Gracia, firing 65 attempts on goal – only three sides have managed more over the respective last four in front of their own fans.

Kiko Femenia profited from his out-of-position berth by netting against Bournemouth last time out, while Will Hughes supplied an assist.

When fit, Hughes has made an impact on the Watford attack.

He’s played a part in 50% of their goals when on the pitch, providing two goals and a pair of assists in his five starts. Indeed, with an average of 6.5 points per start, he can benefit from the visit of a Burnley defence with just a single clean sheet in ten attempts.

Peter Says…

Marko Arnautovic and Kiko Femenia came up trumps last time out, and only Glenn Murray’s spot-kick miss and an injury to Junior Stanislas really let me down in a week where the obvious candidates from Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United duly delivered.

Arnautovic and Femenia feature for me again as they continue to thrive in their out-of-position roles.

There are way too many doubts over City’s team selection and United’s approach to the Manchester derby to get involved there. For the record, I expect a strong City line-up and a 2-0 win to seal the title, but it’s definitely not worth the gamble.

In contrast, Mohamed Salah remains a shoo-in for Liverpool for the Merseyside derby, as long as doubts surrounding his Champions League injury scare are resolved. I’m disappointed not to be able to fit Andrew Robertson in too.

Arsenal’s home tie against Southampton and Spurs’ trip to Stoke are the big draws this weekend.

Granted, both the Saints and the Potters are fighting for their lives, but they have been on the receiving end of heavy defeats recently and face two of the top scoring sides in the division.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane will surely appear in every Scout selection this week, though there may be more debate over which supporting cast to include – Christian Eriksen, Petr Cech, Ben Davies and Shkodran Mustafi get my vote, despite slight rotation worries for the last two.

I struggled to decide which attacking Brighton and Leicester City players to choose, but the home form of Pascal Gross and Jamie Vardy’s metronome consistency gave them the nod over Murray and Riyad Mahrez.

That may come back to bite me, but I do see the quartet heavily involved as they entertain free-falling Huddersfield and a Newcastle defence which can’t seem to replicate its outstanding home form on the road.

Jonty Says…

Many of last weekend’s Wildcard template players faltered in Gameweek 32, most notably Brighton’s Gross, Chelsea’s Willian, Leicester’s Mahrez and Spurs’ Son Heung-min.

I’m backing all to bounce back in style this time around as they enjoy much-improved fixtures.

Gross should find Huddersfield more obliging visitors than last weekend’s Leicester, given that the Terriers have conceded in all of their last 13 away matches. The German’s 5.9 points average at the Amex Stadium also gives me hope.

Similarly, Mahrez should have more joy against a travelling Newcastle side that has shipped 14 big chances over their last six away days, conceding 10 goals along the way.

Son did at least earn an assist against Chelsea last weekend. With a trip to Stoke he should do far better, particularly as he netted a 16-point haul in the 5-1 reverse fixture.

Willian’s six shots on target over his last four home matches, which is top among Blues assets, also indicates the Brazilian will reward our faith should we select him.

Elsewhere, Aubameyang looks to be the best bet for goals against a woeful travelling Southampton side that conceded three against West Ham last weekend.

If money allows, I’d like to see him paired up front with Kane, who is back from injury and scored a brace in that hammering of Stoke earlier in the season. Son should be an able deputy for Kane if our budget becomes stretched.

Mark Says…

After backing Arnautovic in last week’s Squad and watching him reward my faith, I so wanted to find a spot for him this time around.

It’s not easy to murder my Austrian darling, but while I see him troubling the Chelsea defence, I just can’t back him over my selected midfield five.

Indeed, there are few shocks from me this week, with my only real attacking differential found in my choice of strikers. Josh King just edges Salomon Rondon as my maverick pick having supplied a goal or an assist in each of his last three starts.

In defence, I’m still standing by Harry Maguire. I’m all about shopping for that 15-point holy grail (clean sheet, goal, maximum bonus) and, for me, he remains among the top candidates to provide such a return before the season is out. Newcastle United at home could well be the date in question – the Magpies are another side who have proved vulnerable at set-pieces this season.

Elsewhere, I wonder if Femenia will get the nod this time. On our bench in Gameweek 32, he’s proved his worth with his 8-points and looks a prospect again for the visit of Burnley. The Clarets have form, but Watford are solid at Vicarage Road with just three conceded in their last four at home, picking up two clean sheets. I expect few goals in Saturday’s dead rubber.

The Community Champion

Representing the community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek 30 will be BigRedDog, who is in his seventh campaign and has finished inside the top 100,000 three times.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2017/18 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Last week’s champion, Bolleinho, beat the Scouts 81-74

The one to beat remains Gregor, who achieved victory over the Scouts by a 33-point margin in Gameweek 5.

Yep, probably the best course of action, start him with a good first sub. If he doesn't play, advantage those with a good bench. Too risky if he does start not to have him in your 11 now that I think about it. I could see a cameo to keep him sharp though.

Eriksen not better than cheaper options such as Silva, Mahrez and Willian and Mkhi. The Kane and Son double up is enough for me.

        • 8 Years
        8 years, 2 months ago

I think Eriksen will outscore all these apart from Mahrez, maybe. Silva would be great, but he's bound to be rotated for Foden, Gundo, Bernardo etc. and probably given some more time with his fam, if needed.

Okay maybe it's debatable. But I don't think you can argue he'll bring in 2.5m worths more points than willian for e.g.

            • 8 Years
            8 years, 2 months ago

Agreed, but I think most people have Willian and Mahrez anyway so they're not sacrificed. I'm assuming Rainer is suggesting Salah will be the makeweight.

              8 years, 2 months ago

Ah, doubt Salah will be out long enough for it to become a legitimate option but if he was it's something I'd defo consider

If Salah is expected to be out for GW34 then he goes for me.

Can FH him back in 35, if needed.
36 between the SFs, Kane a good option to captain that week.
                Get him back for 38.

              2. Rik Waller
                • 8 Years
                8 years, 2 months ago

If Salah misses the Everton match, he will have 4 matches against Eriksen's 7 (assuming FH will be used in GW35).

Add to this the potential for Salah being preserved for CL semi-final.

Selling for a double-DGW player is defo an option.

      2. Rainer
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 2 months ago

Silva worries me if Liverpool knock City out. With the league won I can see him going back to Spain until the day they lift the trophy.

Mahrez isn't going anyway and Willian is staying for the minute. EL worries with Mkhi.

        1. We Will Klopp you
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 2 months ago

If Arsenal get knocked out them Mkhi offers better value, Silva is dependant on rotation yes. If you can find a spot and the extra money for Eriksen then he's a great option, I just think you'll find better value elsewhere e.g. Sterling, Sane unless Pep goes rotation crazy. So admittedly that value may be a tad on the optimistic side.

It's either start Barnes vs wat (already starting Kiko) and take a 4 pt hit next GW to get Kane, Albrighton and Eriksen

        or

Salah -> Eriksen this week, start Eriksen vs stk and take a 4 pt hit next GW to get Kane and Albrighton

Basically it comes down to Barnes vs wat + 4 pts vs Eriksen vs stk

      Simpson instead of Morgan??

Gives me the 0.1 I need to afford Alonso and Gudmunsson...

Will Alonso be worth it for run in???

Won’t be much difference in Simpson and Morgan so I’d say it’s worth it to have Alonso...

He’s definitely going to haul with those fixtures and the position he plays

      Alli or Son??

      Alonso or Christensen?

Gut feeling is Alli is gonna go on a run and Alonso not gonna be worth the outlay . don't know why I feel that way but I do.

probably feel that way about Alonso because he's averaging 1.4 pts a game over his last 5 games.

Quick mafs. I've watched a couple of his recent games and he was very close to attacking hauls

        Pick one:

        A) Alonso, Eriksen, Austin

        B) Christensen, Son, Vardy

Salah 'knock' must mean less chance of a Firmino rest, yes?

I see the Merseyside derby taking a backseat for Liverpool. They will want a strong squad to see out the 2nd leg of CL match with City

Yes, in theory - as he is even more important for the second leg. Saying that he did get pulled at 70mins, so possibly the most likely to play some part vs. Everton.

I was all set on Free Hit in 34, WC in 36 and BB in 37.

You have to adapt though to situations and with Salah and Stanislas injured, Firmino probably benched, and having doubts over Wilson and Alonso (I'm not convinced either starts after King and Defoe scoring, and Alonso getting hooked), I am going to have to reconsider I think..

            Yep, you certainly have.

Its a big call though. Absolutely no chance of not free hitting in 35 if I wildcard this week though. Thats frustrating as I think GW37 looks good for BB. If City go out of Champs League (I still think theres life in that game yet), then three of them for GW37 is a definite.

Considered that option as well but TC wins it for 37.
I know you popped it on Kane back in gw22 so I guess it's the better option for you out of the 2 DGWs
              Tough call.

Oh it would for me too, but as you meant to say, I wasted mine in GW22!

I could ride this week (with no Spurs) if Wilson and Alonso made it, but will Salah and Firmino play in GW35 anyway if they make it through?

If they do make it through, would make the FH in 35 more appealing for City assets anyway. So part of it lies in do I believe in my beloved club to keep hold of a 3-0 lead?!

With a hefty amount of TV tied up in Mo, im unsure what to do, being on a WC with Salah and Wilian, with Mo playing in 35 and Wilian not, Hazard and Arnie in could be decent. And then if Mo plays 35, i could bring him back in with a FT

Updated best combined Man city & Liverpool team heavily influenced by tonight:
        Karius
TAA, Van Dijk, Lovren, Robertson, Milner, Henderson, Ox
        Salah, Aguero, Mane

On WC and considering removing Salah....

...and thinking about what length of time out with injury do we need to expect for this to be worthwhile?

Like most, I have loads of profit built up in him (purchases at £9.4m, selling value £10.0m and purchase value £10.7m)

My thoughts depending on his expected return week:
        A) Everton in 33 — obviously he stays in the team
        B) Bournemouth in 34 — he stays in the team as could still return a big score in the DGW34 and not worth losing the value for just one week.
        C) West Brom in 35 — tough decision as would be expensive to bring back in on free hit and would not be part of my 36 team without another transfer the following week. But removing would be very significant for my WC team and BB plans for 34.
        D) Stoke in 36 — seemingly key fixture to have in the team but is he worth it with CL semis probably anyway? If not retiring get until the , his value will be down and I should be able to buy back.
        E) Chelsea in 37 — rubbish fixture in DGW so was considering not having him in the side anyway
        F) Brighton in 38 — obviously not in my current side but could bring him in for the final week through taking hits.

My current conclusion is that if he is unlikely to start against Bournemouth, he does not form part of my WC squad. What do you think?

Yes for me I don’t mind him missing this week, but I can’t carry a 10m player who won’t play in a week where I want to use my bench boost.

So the critical information is whether he’s fit for Bournemouth.

I’d then get him on FH in GW35 and take a hit to get him for GW36.

The lost value doesn’t matter too much when there are only 3 GWs to go.
