In tonight’s article, we present some metrics on the different strategies and picks found among the top 10,0000 managers in Fantasy Premier League ahead of Double Gameweek 34.

As discussed in my midweek piece, the top 10k were expected to own an average of 9.08 double players ahead of Saturday’s deadline once their free transfers were used. Indeed, having looked at the final data, we now find that the average was raised to 9.45 players with two fixtures once transfer hits had been made.

Indeed, the average deducted points for hits is higher than normal, with the average transfer cost standing at -2.28 points, with Double Gameweek assets justifying the extra outlay.

The full distribution of double players number for the top 10k is shown below

members

We see that 53% of the top 10k managers achieved a number between 7-10 Double Gameweek players, while around only third of managers got at least 11.

Of course, this number is a big factor when it comes to the choice of the chip activated.

Here are the percentage of chips used among the top 10k managers for Gameweek 34.

Chip Percentage
Wildcard 4.36%
Triple Captain 18.23%
Free Hit 4.34%
Bench Boost 34.79%

Following this latest update, the total usage of chips in the top 10k increased as follows.

members

Although 34.8% activated the Bench Boost chip this week, there are still around 48% of managers in the top 10k who have kept it in reserve, while there are more than 52% Triple Captains still intact. In both cases, we are likely to see these played over the Gameweek 37 doubles.

Now let’s put those managers with chips active under more scrutiny.

For the 18.23% who used the Triple Captain, we see that Romelu Lukaku seems to be the most popular choice (8.73%) while Harry Kane comes in second (4.79%). Meanwhile, only 1.8% triple captained Alexis Sanchez as he continues to shape up as a potentially powerful differential.

Triple Captained Player Percentage
Romelu Lukaku 8.73%
Harry Kane 4.79%
Alexis Sánchez 1.80%
Jamie Vardy 0.85%
Riyad Mahrez 0.50%
Eden Hazard 0.32%
Paul Pogba 0.27%
Mohamed Salah 0.20%

Now we shift gears to the most used chip this week, the Bench Boost.

Below is the template team made up of the most selected by those managers with that chip active in the top 10k.

members

The average Bench Boost manager has chosen to keep trust in three single fixture players. Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Luka Milivojevic – who certainly justified that faith.

This line-up highlights the ownership of players but doesn’t really tell us the make-up of the typical bench.

To gain more insight on that, I checked the four cheapest players in every Bench Boost squad and assumed these would constitute the bench in a regular Gameweek.

The following table shows the most selected bench players for those with the Bench Boost active.

Bench Player for Bench Boosters Percentage
Matt Lowton 33.46%
Wes Morgan 22.25%
Ben Chilwell 21.82%
Mathew Ryan 17.30%
Kevin Long 14.83%
Rob Elliot 13.88%
James Tarkowski 11.10%
Nick Pope 9.46%

We see that the most common bench is: Matt Lowton, Wes Morgan, Ben Chilwell and Matthew Ryan, with Kevin Long, James Tarkowski and Nick Pope also proving key targets.

In summary, Bench Boosters are relying heavily on the Burnley and Leicester defences to provide them with the extra points. Unfortunately, the two sides met at Turf Moor today, and neither came out of the fixture with a clean sheet. Both are at home in midweek, however.

Now, we look at another chip activated by just 4.34% of top 10k managers this week, the Free Hit.

With the chip active, we could reasonably expect that managers would load up on Double Gameweek players, selecting the cheapest bench options possible.

Indeed the template selection confirms this, with heavy hitters like Lukaku, Sanchez, Kane, Christian Eriksen and Salah all proving the go-to options.

members

Free Hit managers have a strong line-up for Gameweek 34, then, but will likely struggle with the Gameweek 35 blanks to come.

Having covered chip use, let’s go back to the player selection statistics for all the top 10k managers.

One key question we had in mind is what forwards should we own for the Double Gameweek?

Managers had to decide how to combine the likes of Kane, Lukaku and Jamie Vardy or simply opt for all three.

Below I have calculated the combination percentages.

Forwards Combination Percentage
Kane + Vardy 15.49%
Lukaku + Vardy 15.01%
Vardy Only 15.01%
Kane + Lukaku 13.93%
Kane Only 11.89%
Lukaku Only 11.53%
Kane + Lukaku + Vardy 7.49%

Vardy seems to be the common factor in all the most popular selections. There are even more teams with only Vardy of the three, than with Kane and Lukaku or any of them alone.

However, for captaincy selection, Vardy ranks third, with fierce competition between Lukaku and Kane.

members

Another burning question was whether to keep or sell Salah. From the metrics in the top 10k, it looks as though the majority of managers chose to retain the Egyptian after his Champions League heroics.

Salah’s ownership dropped slightly from 81.2% last week to 76.6%, so only 4.6% of the top 10k managers moved him out.

Finally, I’ll leave you with a table of players with the most ownership in the top 10k and their effective ownership this week.

Note that ownership includes managers who benched the player this week, while effective ownership includes only starting players with their captaincy statistics included.

Player Top 10k Ownership Top 10k Effective Ownership
Mohamed Salah 76.63% 82.20%
David de Gea 60.76% 61.30%
Jamie Vardy 53.00% 60.23%

Not looking for a template, but which City players are in your team if you're free hitting? I'm currently on Ederson, Sterling and Jesus. Depending on Aguero news Jesus might become Sane/Silva/KDB.

      Jesus if Aguero is out.
I think Sterling is a lock.
      + 1...

Mendy maybe if Pep says he's ready to start or all out attack with Silva/Sane.

True. As far as Mendy is concerned, I don't think there's any way Pep will say 'Mendy is definitely starting this week' 😀

What's the deal with Milivojevic anyway? I have never considered him, thinking that he will regress back to the mean for CDMs (and that Palace will regress back to the mean in terms of winning penalties!) but now he's getting attacking returns outside of penalties too. Could he be the new Lampard/Yaya Toure instead of the new Capoue/Doucoure that I always thought?

He's on pens and FKs in a Zaha team... and a serious footballer too.

I thought the pens and points would dry up too so kept ignoring but over the last few months his point returns have been ridiculous!

I didn't play FPL then. Was Gilberto Silva getting attacking returns apart from penalties?

            • 9 Years
            8 years, 4 months ago

I didn't play FPL either but played a couple of fantasy games aimed at kids. For some reason I have it in my mind that Gilberto was about 7m, may be completely wrong.

Nope, don't think he got many assists and that was the only year he was on pens. I know Henry was injured a bit that year but can't remember if Gilberto was first choice or just stepped up while Henry was out.

Mili seems more of an actual set piece specialist and a slightly more attacking player.

How can I be smart if I fell into the Kane honey trap once again?

It's glaringly obvious now that Man City is a ruddy difficult game while Lukaku's fixtures simply could not be better or more ripe and plum.

Yeh was always gonna be a tough game, but with City in bad form there was a chance Kane could do well. Brighton up next though.

Unless, you're going with both Lukaku and Kane, I think it just about made sense to get Kane now rather than making another transfer later, as you'll want Kane for the run-in.

Also, Lingard offers great value and slight concern that Rom might actually get a rest vs Bournemouth. Oh, and he's a donkey and I hated owning him earlier in the season.

It was the double hat-tricks... GW 19 and 20! I think they left permanent scars even among the veterans and FOLO (fear of losing out) syndrome that Mark can't shake. He's captained Kane for enough blanks that eventually he'll get it right at-least once if he continues to captain him and I think that is both Mark's hope and fear! Fear that the GW he doesn't (C) Kane, he will score a hatty! LOL!

Take that into consideration next time to need to decide who to (C).

For me I'm certain to (C) Kane for GW37... the rest depends on his form.

I genuinely think it was accidental.

He was looking at the ball (not Long) and he was more concerned about Willian kicking the ball at him.

Zero malice in it for me.

Agree. Pundits don't seem to accept accidents happen now. Studs up is always red.

Just have to think what's more likely: Alonso just misjudged a tackle while off balance or he randomly just decided to try and break a players leg, unprovoked.

I have Barnes lingard and long on the bench. My total score should be 33 but it's showing 23. Fpl has not added long's score it seems. What to do now? Please help....

Here’s my first cut at GW35 FH team. Low team value so had to make some compromises in defence:

    Pickford (3.9)
    Mustafi, Baines, Jagielka (Long, Dummett)
    Salah, Mane, Sterling, Gundogan (Cork)
    Aubameyang, Jesus, Firmino

    First XI:
    Liverpool: Salah, Mane, Firmino
    Man City: Sterling, Gundogan, Jesus
    Arsenal: Aubameyang, Mustafi
    Everton: Pickford, Baines, Jagielka

    Thoughts?

He makes no trades has not many DGW has Zaha Sterling and switches Kane C to Salah.
