The Pre-Match Preamble – Gameweek 34

Luck can take on many guises in Fantasy Football.

It’s not all about penalty saves or even falsely accredited goals. The fortune we’re dealt can often be missed because the mechanics and thought processes involved can be complex.

My recent decision to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan is one such example.

Brought in on the Gameweek 32 Wildcard, he was duly benched by Arsene Wenger to score a single point, only to pick up an injury in Europe before his next outing.

That was certainly not in the plan and, at the time, I was forced to write the chain of events off as a roll of the dice that came up short.

But looking back, the decision to opt for Mkhitaryan may prove to be another fortunate twist in my run-in.

The Armenian’s injury ahead of Gameweek 33 forced my hand.

While other managers had the freedom to deliberate and address Mohamed Salah’s injury scare, I had little option but to shift Mkhitaryan before a price drop.

It meant I was distracted and ensured I didn’t have time to weigh up Salah’s likely absence at Goodison Park.

With a hit already booked in for Harry Kane, I couldn’t afford another. So Salah had to stay and my first sub, who came in to score five points, had to cover his absence.

This wasn’t masterful strategic thinking. This was a series of events that combined to make up my mind before I had time to make a mistake.

And, in hindsight, I believe selling Salah last weekend would have been a mistake.

Liverpool’s Champions League draw may just have changed the landscape and, combined with Jurgen Klopp’s promise to go “full throttle”, suddenly our preconceptions of Salah’s starts and minutes may need to be revised.

Salah will now play a first leg with Roma at Anfield on the Tuesday, just three days after a trip to West Brom but four days before the Gameweek 36 meeting with Stoke.

Four days later, he will travel back to Rome to face his former club in the second leg.

In both cases, the four days could prove crucial. Klopp has almost said as much.

His appraisal of the same four-day gap between Tuesday’s victory at Manchester City and today’s game with Bournemouth looks significant.

“We’ve had a longer part of the week to prepare. Makes a big difference. We have enough time for a completely normal line-up.”

If the four-days makes a “big difference” now, it could again before Gameweek 36, and that means that Salah suddenly looks likely to face Stoke.

It may have been different had Liverpool been the second ball out and that, quite literally, is the luck of the draw.

This appears to have fallen in my lap. Not through my own research and planning, but simply because I opted to sign a completely different player who conspired to pick up an injury.

Were it not for Henrikh’s own misfortune, I’d be feeling very uncomfortable come this evening’s kick-off and wringing my hands at the prospect of Salah tearing up Gameweek 36.

No doubt, at that stage, I’ll still captain Kane for his two points versus Watford, but I can’t always rely on luck to save me from myself.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Probably a really daft question, but once you activate FH, can you tinker with the line up all week (same as WC) or is it fixed to the side you have once you hit the 'use chip'

Just want to be sure here...

@AnfieldExpress: Karius; Trent, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Wijnaldum, Chamberlain; Salah, Firmino, Mané.

    Earlier leak looks correct.

7 games on the bench, 6 of them good players with decent fixtures...

I’d say that was his set up for a bench boost.

surprised that kaku seems to be favoured captain over kane. kane chasing golden boot, and his only tough fixture is an out of form and unmotivated MCI.

kaku has better fixtures but i can’t see him running riot. i’m not sure i’ve ever seen him run, even...

That's why I kept Kane and Salah (couldn't also afford Lukaku by 0.1 grrr) and I hope they have a big flurry of goals chasing the Golden Boot. Lukaku "form" sounds great on paper and all but I think Spurs will feed the ball to Kane whereas lots of guys on Manu want to score...

good question, i want to know if i should play my free hit early so i don't miss out on players going up

I know it doesn't impact team value but if i play it later in the week i might not be able to afford certain players?

It should be something players read at the start of the season so they know the rules to the game which they're playing.

          But, hey ho.

Sort of, the ones on the shelf that you get back and the ones you are buying with your FH ... but there is nothing you can do about it with your original team, just watch it hopelessly as it gets injured and falls in value (worst case) 🙂

So How does the FH works?
WIll i get the price rises for the players that i own this week and i removed them in the FH.
Will the selling price drop of the player that i get in the FH ?

Why would anyone read on the rules and inform themselves of something independent of others, when it's 'easier' to come to a community forum and submit a post asking others to tell them instead?

      4. JohnnyMagrinho
          6 years, 6 days ago

So now this forum is just going to be filled with questions about the FH chip (that have been answered aplenty over the last 5-7 days, and earlier on in the season) and "RMFHT" posts.

It's already begun and the first game of this DGW hasn't even kicked off yet. Christ.

A bit more insightful commentary on FPL, rather than people crawling their way through a forum for handouts.

That's what you'd expect from an FPL forum, rather than it being inundated with people who clearly haven't read the rules and can't make a decision on their own.

So I suppose, in answer to your question: a bit more.

Optimistic hope imo. Largely a function of the rolling forum format - has its advantages (highlighting new article content), but the aspects you note are increasingly a real downer.

I find myself rapidly scrolling through comment pages faster and faster these days.

After seeing on Rate my Team post you really have seen them all, especially half way through the GW when everyone has basically got exactly the same team.

I lost track of how many "Who to captain - Kane or Lukaku?!" posts there were this week.

If you're struggling with that kind of decision to the point you need to ask people on an FPL forum then really, what?

I can understand asking for peoples opinions, but at the end of the day surely your own opinion is what you base decisions on, and if you allow that to be shaped by others you shouldn't complain when it goes wrong.
