Romelu Lukaku calms the anxiety of almost a million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers by springing from the Manchester United bench to play his part in Double Gameweek 34.

Over 934,000 handed Lukaku the captaincy for Wednesday night’s encounter, along with Sunday’s ill-fated clash with West Bromwich Albion.

Of the 26,000+ Triple Captains chips in play, 35.4% of them were also trusted on Lukaku.

That shock defeat left the striker with just two points heading into the Vitality Stadium contest, with Jose Mourinho’s teamsheet causing panic when it was revealed that the Belgian would be benched for the first time in his United career.

But a 30-minute appearance was enough for Lukaku to contribute, firing home smartly from a Paul Pogba through-ball as United countered swiftly and decisively in the second period.

It meant that Lukaku ended the Gameweek on a modest eight points, level with Mohamed Salah and trailing Harry Kane (ten). After the news that arrived at 6.45, his owners will be thankful for those returns.

Sanchez No Show

Alexis Sanchez also suffered from the cull, as Mourinho made seven changes in all, either out of punishment for Sunday’s defeat to the Baggies or, more likely, with Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final with Spurs in mind.

The Chilean failed to see action, ending the Gameweek on just two points having been signed by 78,000 for his two fixtures.

With United’s two principal attackers frustrating their managers, it was left to the most signed defender of Gameweek 34 to deliver big.

Smalling on target again

Snapped up by 175,000+ for the double-header, Chris Smalling crowned his twelfth successive start with another goal, his third in six Gameweek appearances.

All three of those recent strikes have arrived away from Old Trafford and, while many of Smalling’s 325,000 managers back in Gameweek 33 may have missed his goal at rivals Man City, his boosted ownership of 523,000+ will surely have benefited from Wednesday’s tap in.

It took Smalling to four goals for the season, trailing only Marcos Alonso (six) among FPL defenders.

More significantly, it meant that, combined with United’s 17th clean sheet of the campaign, Smalling picked up his first maximum bonus to amass 14 points. That took him to 16 for the Gameweek to make him the leading individual points scorer among those with two fixtures.

Smalling owed his opener to the pass and movement of Jesse Lingard, who claimed his second assist in four Gameweeks and sixth of the season. Starting on the right of a lively front three, Lingard was picked up by 98,000 ahead of United’s double-header but was owned by a modest 668,000+ (10.9%) ahead of Gameweek 34.

It was the playmaker who made way for Lukaku on the hour-mark, indicating that he will be a starter in Saturday’s cup-tie.

Jose shuffles the pack

Mourinho made seven changes in all, as Ashley Young, Victor Lindelof, Antonio Valencia, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata joined Lukaku and Sanchez in making way.

That meant starts for Lingard, Phil Jones, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini and the lesser-spotted Matteo Darmian.

As a result, Eric Bailly – owned by 5.9% of managers – failed to start in either of the Gameweek fixtures and has figured in just two of the last five outings.

The Ivorian is understandably suffering sales, though that also applies to United’s leading assets ahead of their blank in Gameweek 35.

United exodus underway

Even Lukaku, with five goals and two assists in his last seven Gameweek appearances, is currently the most sold player, with Pogba and Lingard also shedding ownership at pace.

United have two fixtures to come in Gameweek 37, though they are away at Brighton and West Ham United. Much will also depend on their fate on Saturday, with progress to the FA Cup final no doubt heightening the risk of rotation over those fixtures.

Both Spurs (wba NEW) and, in particular, Manchester City (HUD BHA), have a stronger double-header, so FPL managers appear to be clearing the decks to make way for their assets. Again with Spurs, any progress to the FA Cup showpiece could hinder our recruitment, particularly with such as Son Heung-min.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Each team's odds (to 1) for a CS. I'd imagine LFC and WBA's odds will change a good bit if LFC are without their big 3.
    ManCity 0.8
    LFC 1.3
    Stoke 1.5
    Everton 1.625
    Arsenal 1.75
    CPA 2.3
    Burnley 2.3
    Newcastle 2.5
    Wat 2.6
    WBA 6
    WHam 7
    Swansea 16

Only 7 ahead if Chelsea win game in hand. Losing on Saturday would make us only 4 ahead and we still have to play Chelsea.. No collapse is beyond Liverpool.

As a Liverpool fan, I want us to play for the win on Saturday.

Yeah the 4th place spot of the main leagues of Europe now go straight into CL groups. Was only announced in February. At first I thought it was unfair on the smaller teams but in another way it helps them, as they no longer have to face the likes of Spurs or Sevilla in the final qualifying match.

If Chelsea fail to win today, Liverpool will qualify for the CL by beating West Brom on Saturday.

No, seal top 4 then rotate and focus on CL. Don't take any chances and ruin the league + CL, Klopp has made that clear.

Surely that'd be more reason for him to play full strength in the league - 3-0 up against Man City in the CL, why wouldn't you go full strength in the league if you're looking to consolidate top four?

if we don't rotate some of our players ill be extremely disappointed as a fan, top 4 is all but tied up, especially if chelsea fail to win tonight, everything should be focussed on europe, whats the point of guaranteeing qualifying for a tournament you are not going to do everything we can to win

Non FPL question regarding the leaked line-up.

I have been wondering for a while. From my understanding, the preparation for weekend match have been done over the week. What can the professional do with the information of leaked line-up on Friday night?

I still remember the season that Ancelotti regularly revealed his Chelsea line-up in press conference and won the title at season-end. How big the impact of leaked line-up actually are?

I'm not sure how they train or prepare for the weekend.

For 3 PM game, it looks quite challenging to adjust tactics on Friday night and communicate with the team on Saturday morning. But they are pros. It might be reasonable timeframe for them to adapt.

Odd being on a free hit and 2 rivals c. 20 pts ahead with no FH and only 6-7 at present, and wanting Salah/Robertson/Aube to be rested (but only if we know about it in advance)

          Pickford or Butland?

Pickford would be double Everton, with Baines.

            Butland - save points.

Fancy Newcastle to score as well (Baines owner)

Same boat but with Barnes and Chillwell instead of Vardy and Tark.

I'd be disappointed not to break 100 tonight with 6 players, needing only 15 points.

circumstances this season mean I am wildcarding late, did FH 31, team was well placed for 32 to 34 but shambles for 35. trying to balance a decent team for this week with plenty doubles for BB in 37. how's it looking?

          Ederson Fabianski
          Long Smalling Cedric Robertson(*) Tomkins
          Sterling Salah Willian Kenedy Mili
          Vardy Auba/Laca Jesus

Robertson depends on news of leaked Pool line up.

then do Aub / Laca to Kane next week, leave scope for emergency transfer in 37 (probably Robertson or other Liv defender out)

gives me 10 starters this week and likely 11 out of 15 DGWers for GW 37

          thoughts?

Given Pep has priors for squad rotation after league wins, who do you think are the less used players in the squad he'll field more often? (because he sees them in next season plans, parading for sale, world cup place competing etc)

On the flip side, which players is he most likely to rest significantly (Silva comes to mind) to make way, perhaps those more injury prone and World Cup assured?

Does breaking PL records matter enough to him from past experience to field strong sides, or fairness to field good sides against teams with something to play for (i.e. Swansea was mentioned)?

Really want 3 from Man City and plan BB in 37 so trying to get a read on likely repeat players (if any!) and will try to get 2 or 3 for gw35. No FH.

Thinking about best replacement for Mee until the rest of the season?
Already have Laporte, Alonso, VVD, Dunk.

          1) Baines
          2) Other Burney def
          3) Someone else?

RP. Need to make up some ground on the top 2 in my ML so considering leaving out rotation-risky Firmino and doubling up on Laca+Auba (accompanying Jesus).

          Terrible idea?

          Foster Elliot
          TAA Lowton Ake Baines Alonso
          Walcott Shaqiri Lingard Eriksen Hazard
          Barnes Aubamayang Lukaku

Alonso, Hazard & Lukaku > Walker, KDB & Jesus worth a -8 this week?

Would leave me with 2.4m ITB to do Aubamayang > Kane next week...

          Sound like a plan?

I'm not sure that Wenger's bizarre ramblings are the same as a leaked team.
If interpret his uncertainty or the dilemma he's wrestling with, then Laca is surely as much a risk as auba.
So you should either get rid of both or stick with the one you rate more highly when playing...... no?
