The Gameweek begins at Anfield for what appears to be an almighty mismatch between Liverpool and Stoke City.

The Reds come into this encounter needing a win to move second in the table, while the Potters are desperate for points and could even be relegated should the weekend results go against them.

Liverpool are the only unbeaten side at home over the top four tiers, while Stoke arrive on Merseyside with the worst away record across those divisions, having gained just nine points from a possible 51.

They also have the task of silencing Mohamed Salah and preventing him from scoring in his eighth successive home match.

As expected, Salah starts for Liverpool as he seeks out a fifteenth double-figure return of an extraordinary campaign. He has already punished Stoke with a brace in the reverse fixture in just a 23-minute cameo performance from the bench.

It’s a chilling prospect for Paul Lambert’s defence and for any Fantasy manager without the Egyptian, particularly given that Salah is also the most-captained player in the Gameweek yet again.

Elsewhere, Roberto Firmino also starts for the home side. Perhaps necessitated by the injury to Sadio Mane, who misses out today, the Brazilian looks set to shift to the left flank to accommodate his absence as Danny Ings is handed the central striker role.

Firmino was sold by over 80,000 managers ahead of today’s deadline, second only to Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. His form is far less incendiary that Salah’s with just two goals from his last seven Gameweeks, though he has been restricted to five starts over that spell.

In defence, Jurgen Klopp does make further changes and could well line up with a 3-4-3, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alberto Moreno potentially playing wing-back roles.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

That first miss from Salah meant everything. Would've been lots of counter attacking opportunities had he scored. Can't beat myself up for bad luck.

Salah pulling a Kane today - blanking against a rubbish side when everyone captains him.

One of the three current best players in the world plays 90 mins at home to Stoke and blanks for the first time at home in months.

All when, it's the first time in months he has been somewhat of a differential.

That's FPL summed up right there.

      I know right.

I fully expected him to score. I just didn't get him because I thought over the course of the next few weeks players with more games would produce more.

Him not scoring anything at all is just a bonus.

Salah scores fewer than one goal per game. We can't start claiming that this game is all luck just because he didn't score in today.

        1. Brosstan
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 2 months ago

I think theres elements of luck such as Salah not getting any points against one of the worst away sides in the league. Or Shaqiri scoring 3 goals in a row for the only time in his career when people happened to bring him in to prepare for a DGW while others went for Walcott. Over time the best players will have the better average results, but variance is massive and some people who get on the wrong side of several close decisions will feel hard done by.

          1. Deulofail
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 2 months ago

Hmm, seems that many people expected Salah to get a goal, rather than assuming there was a chance, be it 50-50 or some other probability either way. Those people are quick to mention luck now that they are on the wrong side of it, but as you say variance and averages exist, and that's one major reason people choose to sell a player with fewer games (and playing time, which was also assumed) than his alternatives. I'd say Salah owners are lucky he was on the pitch long enough to get a CS point, and lucky Liverpool didn't concede, and lucky to have got points at times in previous games. That is, for the sake of arguing from a 'luck' perspective.
