Dugout Discussion – Swansea vs Chelsea

The day’s events end in South Wales as Swansea City host Chelsea at the Liberty Stadium.

Southampton’s victory and Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Stoke puts a new twist on this encounter, with the Swans given extra incentive to pull away with three points. Meanwhile, the Blues have the opportunity to apply pressure in the race for a top-four finish.

From a Fantasy perspective, allegiance will be divided with clean sheets desirable, though many managers will also look for goals.

Indeed, Jordan Ayew is the most popular Swans signing ahead of today’s deadline. The striker has fired seven goals from his last 14 outings and represents their major attacking prospect ahead of their two fixtures in Gameweek 37.

Meanwhile, for Chelsea, those who held on to Willian in midfield will be dismayed by Antonio Conte’s latest team selection. The Brazilian is dropped to the bench – perhaps following his reaction to being withdrawn in last weekend’s FA Cup semi-final.

Willian was sold by 42,000+ for Gameweek 36 but is still part of 866,000+ squads ahead of this evening’s clash. That made him the second most owned Chelsea player in today’s squad with Marcos Alonso serving out his three-match suspension.

Cesar Azpilicueta has the honour of being their most popular asset; he takes an ownership of 20.6% into this match and was their most signed player for Gameweek 36 with 40,000+ acquiring his services.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Hilarious that Ross Barkley ruined his career by moving to Chelsea. Now he'll just become another journeyman.

I don't get this "we get a big advantage from chips" argument. The reason FFS managers get a boost from them at this time of the season is because they've held them to this point of the season rather than using them earlier. When they finally deploy them they're simply bringing themselves on to the same playing field as those who used them earlier in the season.

Yes, but everyone has the option to play them at any time in the 38 Gameweeks. Some get a big TC haul from a four-goal Agüero in a SGW. You can't tell how you compare to them until you've deployed your TC chip in a DGW. Only at the end of GW38 can you see who used their chips and squad selections more effectively.

So there is more variance. The more strategic players all wait for dgws to play it and it's all very boring and predictable and still has a lot to do with luck. It would be great to see players like ville ronka putting it on salah one week , jay egersdorff on Kane the next and mark sutherns on hazard the week after

It's less to do with luck though in the sense that you can't account for, say, half your bench being rested or the odd freak result. A double gameweek means a higher chance for form to come through as you're more immune to the odd rotation or outlier in terms of results.

Triple captaining Salah vs. Bournemouth for instance would've been an equally good decision to triple captaining him vs. Watford, but of course the outcome between the two weeks was very different. I wouldn't want leagues to be decided on this kind of luck.

You seem to be arguing against chips in the first place. I would support that argument, and argue it can be extended to captaincy in general

I wouldn't mind no chips, true.

But mandating that they be used in SGWs only just increases the element of luck.

I disagree with that because the chip strategies we choose determine, to a considerable degree, the subset of players we limit our choices to for many weeks (perhaps even 10GWs) towards the end of the season. That means that success is largely based on a direction you took 3-10 GWs ago, rather than reacting to performances from players and teams each week or every 2 or 3 weeks. That's quite an arbitrary connection between success and skill (aka luck), in my opinion. I want to base decisions on players and quality of fixtures, not players and quantity of fixtures.

                      1. Pierce34

We still pick players with quality of fixtures though, that's why a lot of us have kept Salah even though he doesn't have a DGW. In general we try to pick the players with the best form and the best available fixtures, and if someone has two more fixtures over the same number of GWs it's just logic (unless, of course, they're absolutely awful fixtures or the player is in bad form).

Exactly, it's logical to keep own the player with more fixtures, which means the number of fixtures is a powerful factor in your decision. More so than I'd like it, personally, because it's restrictive. Consider Marks preamble: he laments the similarities of teams in the mods and cons league due to the restrictions caused by the chip strategies.

                          1. Pierce34

I mean, up to a limit, obviously. For example, I'd never pick a Brighton or Huddersfield player in GW37.

Also, double gameweeks won't stop existing even if we can't use chips in them. Chip usage doesn't affect picking players with more fixtures.

Yeah, that's why, if we keep FH, for example, it makes sense to me to limit them to BGWs. That way, 'casuals' aren't annoyed that they only have 4 players suddenly one week, and the playing field is equal, with everyone choosing from the whole player list, the best players they think they can get.

In fact this is even more even, because people won't split strategies leading up to the BGW by either planning or not planning (or something in between). So each GW is a managers best team possible for that GW rather than full of sacrifices on the lead up to and after a BGW.

Would prefer no FH myself. But FH for BGWs seems the best of both worlds to me.

But anyway, without chips the DGWs/BGWs don't disappear, but the 'advantage' is less because the FH chip is 'powerful', whereas no FH chip means you have to sacrifice points to earn them back with interest during blanks and doubles.

But how is it not a level playing field? It's not out fault if people use the FH too casually without notice it's better in a BGW. It's not 'insider info' - I didn't need to come to the FFS site to realise when the FH is more suited to.

As for the other chips, we mostly agree anyway. And in any case, the value of the TC and BB is a bit exaggerated.

Because I don't think it's what people sign up for. It's like the goalposts are moved during the game, and some people don't even know the goalposts can move.

Of course, it's their fault for not researching it, but the system is set against them, simply because they don't take the game seriously enough to know about the unspoken rules which *we* all know about because we're sad enough to immerse ourselves inthe FPL underworld (e.g. there will be BGWs and SGWs to save your chips for)

I think people here vastly overestimate how much the casual player knows. I talk to my friends about it, and they've never heard of, or completely forgotten about, DGWs and SGWs, despite playing the game before.

People are busy, they work, they have social lives. FH chip offers them a get-out for BGWs, but not if they don't know about them or don't remember them.

That's why I think the game should be simpler and more accessible.

These are good points, but the casual player is never going to win FPL anyway, so not knowing about the chips doesn't make a difference in the grand scheme of things.

And if I beat someone because they triple captained Rooney in GW1 or bench boosted with a bunch of 3.9ers., then too bad for them 😛

Yeah fair enough. I just don't like an automatic win against my friends because they have jobs, careers and kids, whilst I'm still a student. An FPL win then means that my life is empty of other things rather than that I picked the best players haha!

There are tons of players I wish I could own, but have ignored for weeks due to the fact they have fewer games than the obvious alternatives in my chosen chip strategy. Besides, my chip strategy is still influencing mine and everyone's decisions. Strategies that some people decided months ago. That's introducing a lot of luck in my view. You have less power over your choices.

Not everybody in the world even knows that BGWs and DGWs exist. There's nothing in the rules to suggest it won't be 38 SGWs. The simpler, the better, imo, for the most part, anyway.

Many people just don't care enough to research extra information about how and when DGWs and BGWs occur. They want to play for the fun of choosing players to beat their friends' players.

Any mechanism in the game that requires extra work beyond the understanding of the rules, simply to be able to gain an equal playing field with everyone else, hands an advantage to those who take it seriously. I don't want to beat people simply because they didn't learn how the FA organise fixtures and don't have the time to keep up with Ben Crellin.

Not that kind of research imo. I don't want to beat my friends simply because they're not sad enough to follow Ben Crellin. MLs with my friends are about the players we choose, not the strategies we copy. And I view OR the same way.

Ok. Better change the rules so that a complete numpty who has no intention of devoting any time on playing the game isn't disadvantaged by the hundreds of thousands that enjoy the competition who spend some time and thought.

Short sighted, and you're arguing yourself for the sake of it. Chip strategies are few. Think about it: there are only a 3 or 4 decent ways to play the chips, all at the end of the season. Without them, the possible strategies you can employ are much, much greater, and the pool of players you can consider is unlimited by chip strategy.

The chips over the more seasoned manager a big advantage over the normal fpl managers who only play for fun. Essentially I am a lot of mini leagues with work colleagues.. I win it by 100+ points in the end.. that's because using chips in the dgw/ blanks gets me so much more points then them. I am also in mini leagues with seasoned managers and it is level playing field there. So if you want a fun league with a mate it isn't fun because you will beat him.

I agree with this, and there's no guarantee using chips late will catapult us up the ranks as much as we plot, plan and hope. I like them because they add a bit of spice to the game and I'd likely get a bit bored without them. The new FH chip is a good one. Looking forward to trying to time that one better next season.
