The day’s events end in South Wales as Swansea City host Chelsea at the Liberty Stadium.

Southampton’s victory and Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Stoke puts a new twist on this encounter, with the Swans given extra incentive to pull away with three points. Meanwhile, the Blues have the opportunity to apply pressure in the race for a top-four finish.

From a Fantasy perspective, allegiance will be divided with clean sheets desirable, though many managers will also look for goals.

Indeed, Jordan Ayew is the most popular Swans signing ahead of today’s deadline. The striker has fired seven goals from his last 14 outings and represents their major attacking prospect ahead of their two fixtures in Gameweek 37.

Meanwhile, for Chelsea, those who held on to Willian in midfield will be dismayed by Antonio Conte’s latest team selection. The Brazilian is dropped to the bench – perhaps following his reaction to being withdrawn in last weekend’s FA Cup semi-final.

Willian was sold by 42,000+ for Gameweek 36 but is still part of 866,000+ squads ahead of this evening’s clash. That made him the second most owned Chelsea player in today’s squad with Marcos Alonso serving out his three-match suspension.

Cesar Azpilicueta has the honour of being their most popular asset; he takes an ownership of 20.6% into this match and was their most signed player for Gameweek 36 with 40,000+ acquiring his services.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Fair enough. I was trying to say that my rank didn't reflect my season and that perhaps I'd benefited from a hike from the chips and DGWs which perhaps isn't deserved based on the previous 34 GWs.

I didn't intend it to come across about a brag about rank, it was more about the impact that the DGW and chips have on our seasons now and how they can help paper over cracks or even given major boosts in rank.

It's not easy coming up with a column every Saturday morning that talks about the experience of playing Fantasy Football and I have to rely on my own experience and views at the time to produce it. Now and again I'm going to slip and rub folk up the wrong way, I accept that. Some got what I was trying to say, though. Clearly it came across badly to others.

But the chips and effective use of them is all part of the game! People who used them earlier had their points for them already. The only rank that is a true reflection of your season is afte GW38 - then everyone has had equal opportunity and you probably deserve to finish where you finish.

Well I don't feel that way this season. Compared to previous seasons, this doesn't feel like a top 10k season. I don't feel I've had many great Gameweeks until the DGW and chips kicked in and its using them effectively that has given me the hike.

If I do end up in the top 10k, it will be done to the last few GW's, not any great decisions or inspiration before that and that just feels a bit hollow compared to other seasons.

It's only my view based on my experience and my season and I was just commenting on whether the period GW31-37 has the danger of becoming somewhat routine as a result of the chip/DGW combination tactic.

Hopefully, next season there will be a curveball - perhaps a third DGW - that will break it up. If not, I feel there's a risk we will roll out similar strategies with similar results and then I'm not sure how we'll feel about it. Maybe we'll be delighted. Dunno.

Can you not use any influence you may have to change the way the chips are played? Just a question . Fair enough you may not have any influence on that side of things.

I wouldn't want to. This really is just my view and I play the game in bubble based on conversing with you guys and the ScoutCast etc.

As Numb rightly said earlier, I don't represent the average FPL manager, so I shouldn't influence and bend the game to my view.

There are other more fundamental issues I'd rather champion, like tweaking the BPS a little.

I was just my opinion out there on the GW34-37 period and the significant influence of the DGW's and chips. I think it's in danger of being too much of an influence on our seasons. That's just my view.

Lots of folk don't agree and that's all good. The Preamble is meant to prompt discussion as an opinion piece, so that's fine.

I do think I could have put the message across better, but it's done now. I had an hour and should have done a better job in hindsight. I didn't mean to put anyone's nose out or come across like I was bragging or making the game out to be easy.

It did but I blew it after that tbh, and was probably in my rightful place before the DGW's chipped in (somewhere between 40k and 30k perhaps).

Yes, I was perhaps one of those to benefit most over the period that followed. But I'd just rather had worked for a rank hike than done it via chips and DGWs. Because I don't yet think the playing field is level in that respect. Just my view.

My best rank was earned with that hat-trick from Mane for Southampton. I'll never forget that and its those moments that perhaps deserve big rank hikes. I'm not sure effective use of chips and DGW's can match those moments. That's what I'm getting at.

                  • 12 Years
                  7 years, 10 months ago

I think you're confusing work with luck. This year our Mane was effectively Chris Smalling. Smalling vs Valencia in 34 was a 14 point swing and around 10k that 14 points is 3 or 4k rank change by itself.

Ranks are so tight this year compared to a few years ago little one off decisions can have a seemingly huge impact on rank. Similarly this is why I don't see bobbing between 20k and 40k mid season as meaningful movement. But 20k at Christmas was a great platform when so many regular managers were still well outside 100k.

Yeah maybe. But I was basically ranked between 40k and 30k from GW17 to GW31. So I'd done well, but couldn't break out and get near the top 10k.

Then what? A big hike just as the DGW strategies kick in. Without this period and the opportunity to play it well, I doubt I'd have pushed up.

It's part of the game of course, but I'd rather have achieved that hike without feeling that I'd exploited a period of the season that appears to give a section of FPL managers an advantage.

Maybe I should just be grateful and shut up but, you know, I had an article to write.

There's a couple of strands to unpick here and I don't want to spend much more of our time on this but these are my thoughts on your season, double gameweeks & chips.

                      1) most of your work was done in the first half of the season
                      2) wildcards and double gameweeks have always existed and given the planners an advantage
                      3) there is a lot of variance in fpl already and chips do exacerbate this
                      4) your recent rank boost comes in part from both of the above but also marginals like Smallings haul which contributed thousands of ranking places for us by itself and that's not attributable to chips and strategies

That's not what I said, but I stand by my view that the chips have made it somewhat easier because its become a significant advantage for those who plan effectively and that's an increasing number every season. I think the FH has added to that even more based on its first season. But lets see next season.

        1. XabiAlonso

I was being a bit facetious. Finishing that high up every year seems unbelievable to most who visit this site and are happy with top 50k. The free hit was an obvious chip from the start when it would be most useful and a few in my mini leagues did the same as me albeit not all on the same blank week and did well out of it. I still believe the triple captain chip is more to do with luck than the other ones though and would like that removed personally

I'm not sure it has though . I planned as much as anyone , probably more and since gw 31 I've just been oblitorated. 8k to 33 k. I think there are many in a similar position so really planning the gws has killed me.. yes i probably picked the wrong players and boo hoo im dead...maybe from your perspective it has but you said yourself you were fortunate. Many others were not with the rotation. Everyone views from their own perspective. 5k maybe a poor season to you but for many this is immense.

No I've not said 5k is a poor season. Anything but that.

Basically, if I was reviewing my season so far, it would probably sit among the 30k mark - where I was before DGW34. It's been good, but steady and unspectacular without enough big moments.

But the DGW and chips have changed that and got me a very good rank, one I don't think my previous GW's warranted.

And that's my point. Are the DGWs and Chips giving us this kind of opportunity to transform bad into average, average into good and good in very good (eg 5k).

If they do give us this opportunity, is it wrong that it rolls around every season from GW34-37?

Of course the optimum use of chips is part of the game, but if the last two seasons are anything to go by, we're learning exactly how to use them which is in danger of become more routine than fun.

It would be better if a top 10k finish relied more on good decisions and GW's over the course of the season, rather than in a four GW spell at the end.

I'm sure it does for others, but for me, that just about sums it up.

I agree and I understood your article.

This is my 3rd season playing for at least 90% of it (I always fall out for a few weeks, just life) and I've 2 top 50k finishes.

This season I feel like everything has been poor to average, no spectacular gameweek as you say and I'm currently 65k with TC left.

My 2 best gameweek ranks were the past 2 weeks.

And no its not a good direction for the game if 33 gameweeks of work is largely irrelevant compared to the final 5 gameweeks. It should have equal significance from start to finish.

Thanks Pep. My background is games development and perhaps that influences my view.

In terms of design, the chips and DGW's are troublesome. There's no balance to the end of the season if a proportion of managers can exploit that period more than others to gain a significant advantage.

I've benefited from it but, strangely, it doesn't feel that great and I think if the same happens again next season, others might feel the same.

Managers like Jay, FPL General and Jack Wain - and Jonty this season - deserve their high ranks due to their season long performance. By rights, I should be perhaps 30-40k places behind them. I'm not, because I've done well wth the DGW and chips.

Isn’t doing well in the DGW and the use of chips simply part of the game ? Don’t beat your self up if you do better in one part of the game and lesser so during the general churn of the game week.

Many of the players that have occupied the top 10k used their chips very early so it is no surprise that it is getting harder to break in to the top 10k before likewise use of your chips.

Every gameweek 10% of the players in the top 10k are there for the first time in the season, which shows that chips are providing for bigger swings and later surges than previously experienced.

The days of sitting in the top 5k from early mid season, as a matter of right, are long gone due to the players using their chips early .... unless you get a plentiful amount of Jonty’s Jam 🙂

Absolutely agree with the bit about a top 10k relying on good decisions over the season as there is too much of a sway over the 4 weeks and it turns into a lottery with all the rotation. Its one thing picking players that don't perform , thats part of the game , but to be hit by 5 or 6 players being rotated kind of undoes any good work over the previous 30 gws. To me the only way to approach that is too lose them but it will never ever happen. Not sure really how they can fix the issue

Well you go unlucky with rotation so I can understand where you're coming from.

It's the opportunity I'm talking about. You were unlucky and weren't able to take the opportunity, I was more fortunate - particularly with the Free Hit and Wenger/AE.

But the issue I'm raising is is it good for the game that, every season, we have this 4GW spell where we know we have the chance to earn a big rank hike and perhaps paper over the cracks of the previous 34 GWs.

I personally feel a little a flat rather than jubilant, because my best GW's coincide with this period.

Mark, if an increasing number are planning effectively every year, how does that make it easier to get into the top 5,000 as you suggest in your preamble? You appear to be contradicting yourself.

I guess that's balanced out by more players generally. What's increasing faster, the number of players or the number of players investing time in planning and strategies around DGWs? Not sure.

If both groups are increasing it can't be easier to get into the top 5,000.

You needed to be in the top 0.2% of FPL players to make it into the top 5,000 when there were 2.5 million FPL managers. Let's say for the sake of argument that at time there were 10,000 serious players.

You need to be in the top 0.1% of FPL players to make it into the top 5,000 when there are 5 million FPL managers. If there are now, say, 50,000 serious managers, the level of serious competition has increased by a multiple of five, while the difficulty of attaining the top 5,000 as a proportion of all players has doubled.

Early thoughts but Willian + Mahrez + Lukaku -> Sterling + Sane + Jesus might need to be done.
