A surprise blank for Mohamed Salah makes it a bad start to Gameweek 36 for many as Stoke City hold Liverpool to a goalless draw.

A collective laugh of disbelief went round Anfield when Salah, put through by Jordan Henderson’s pass, missed an early golden opportunity against the Potters. It was, after all, the kind of chance he’s gobbled up all season.

Still, there was plenty of time for the league’s top scorer to prevail against a team with only two clean sheets on the road all season.

By the end of the match, Stoke had made it three, and more than 50,000 fans in the ground, and some 3.5 million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers across the globe, were not so amused.

Humour was in particularly short supply among the 1.6 million (29%) who handed him the armband, with a further 40,000 Triple Captaining the Egyptian – 61.7% of those using the chip in Gameweek 36.

Salah’s blank was the first time he’d failed to score at home since Gameweek 24, and only the second time in his last 11 starts. The other was at Man Utd, in Gameweek 30, when he was captained by 966,699 (16.6%), compared to the 1.5 million (27.28%) on Harry Kane.

The roles have been reversed now, with Kane hosting Watford on Monday night backed by 17.8% with the armband, including 54 of FPL’s top 100 managers – Salah was backed by 40.

The 34.7%-owned Spurs striker was already the most signed player of the Gameweek, with 241,417 new owners, and a decent haul against the Hornets will have a major impact on FPL ranks, as well as confirming that the race for the Golden Boot is back on.

The lack of a Double Gameweek 37 meant this match was a last hurrah for Salah as far as some owners were concerned, particularly as Liverpool’s sole fixture next week involves a trip to Chelsea.

But while other Reds assets experienced sales heading into Gameweek 36, Salah’s ownership actually increased, albeit by a marginal 8,726.

His backers endured a frustrating day, with the winger firing in seven shots, six from inside the box, more than any other player in the Gameweek so far. But it was to no avail, while Liverpool had 20 shots overall – their most in a match without scoring.

To add to the mix, cameras appeared to show Salah lashing out towards Bruno Martins Indi, though there is no suggestion as yet that this will lead to an FA review and a potential suspension.

The draw means Liverpool’s top-four place is still not guaranteed, which will likely urge coach Jurgen Klopp to continue fielding strong sides despite the demands of Champions League action.

The likes of Salah, Roberto Firmino and a fit Sadio Mane could, therefore, still produce solid points in a full-strength and well-motivated side.

But that single fixture in Gameweek 37 has made up many managers’ minds – the four most sold players are currently all from Liverpool, with Salah trailing Firmino at the top of that list.

Klopp rings the changes

The injury to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the Champions League tie with Roma prompted Klopp to declare that he would have to be creative to fill the midfield hole that resulted.

His response was to rest James Milner and move full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold further up the pitch.

That was a potentially lucrative move for the 4.9% of managers who own the 4.4-priced defender, although it ended up securing them just the six points from a clean sheet as he was replaced by Milner after 64 minutes with a knock.

The Liverpool coach was also forced into another change as Mane picked up a minor injury and played no part in the match at all, although he is expected to be fine for the midweek match in Rome according to Klopp’s update.

Danny Ings came in for the Senegalese international, a move that persuaded 6,800+ managers to take a punt on the striker.

The logic was sound – if Liverpool, as expected, put Stoke to the sword early enough, Ings might well get on the scoresheet and stay on the pitch for the full 90 minutes as Klopp took the chance to rest Salah and Firmino for Wednesday’s vital trip to Italy.

The Potters’ obduracy put paid to all that, with Ings lasting a mere 64 minutes while the star attacking duo played the full match.

Change was in the air at the back as well, with Ragnar Klavan coming in for Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno replacing Andrew Robertson, who was benched for a second Gameweek in three.

The Scottish left-back had been signed by 10,431 ahead of today’s deadline, with his ownership rising by 89,929 since Gameweek 32.

He, along with Mane, is now among those four Liverpool players suffering early Gameweek 37 sales.

The result did at least make it four clean sheets in six Gameweeks for Klopp’s defence, with Virgil van Dijk and Loris Karius the big beneficiaries in Fantasy terms as they’ve started all those matches and seem to be rotation-proof.

Post-match, Klopp gave an update on knocks suffered by Alexander- Arnold (dead leg), Jordan Henderson and Joe Gomez, though all three will be expected to be in contention for Wednesday’s tie in Rome.

“How it always is after a game, [we have] knocks here and there. Hendo obviously twisted his ankle but could carry on, so that’s rather good than a bad sign.

“But until Wednesday is not the longest break in the world, so we will see. Joe got an early knock as well and twisted his ankle as well a little bit, so we will have to see about that. We will see.”

Stoke clinging on

The Potters arrived at Anfield with the worst away record across England’s top four tiers, with just nine points from an available 51.

Results elsewhere slightly devalued the point they then earned, but keeping just a second clean sheet in 11 matches is a step in the right direction ahead of their final two fixtures (CRY swa).

They were out-shot 20-5, but keeper Jack Butland was only required to make two stops as he failed to return a save point for just the second time in 11 Gameweeks.

That meant Erik Pieters instead gathered bonus for the Potters – his first extra points of the season – which was fitting given his role in keeping Salah off the scoresheet.

Maximum bonus went to Joe Gomez, with fellow defender Klavan picking up an extra point for his day’s work.

Feel like I would only take a -12 if it’s gonna get me some high ceiling players. Gundogan, VDH, Lejuene are not that type of players. You run the risk of one player you sold scoring a goal or keeping a cleansheet and your hit is failing.

You guys arguing against chips for reasons of fairness are clearly delusional. First and foremost, FPL is a game. Pretty much any game I know will reward the players who fully understand the ins and out of the game, research it, and practice a lot. Saying things like ' I don't want to beat my friends cause they have lives and I don't’ is ridiculous. They made a choice not to invest the time necessary to fully understand the game they chose to play.

I also don't like statements like 'chip strategy limit the players I can have'. These are self-imposed limits you placed on yourself as you felt the course of action you have chosen is the most optimal one for points over that given timeframe. You are free to play any strategy you want regardless of what people on this site say is the best one.

I think a better argument could be made against sites like FFS even existing. Anyone not using sites like this is at a disadvantage. Again, I only blame the players for not taking a few minutes to look them up. When I was actively taking FPL seriously I would spend a lot of time going through this site, Opta stats and watching games I would never normally watch just to get an edge. Now that life has taken over I just browse her on Friday evenings and I get a good gist of the moves I should be making for that weekend.

Pretty much every game with fix rules will have optimal strategies built into it. They may be hard to find on your own but when tens of thousands are researching it then they will start to pop up. Even if you take away the chips this will still be true. People will come up with 4-8-week transfer plans, template teams will still exist, FFS will still spoon-feed us their collective efforts and we will, on average do better than those who don't do basic research on a game they have chosen to play.

P.S I love FFS as it allows me to be a casual and still get all the relevant info I need to not become a complete fish.

Following on from today's hot topic...I did a lot better at FPL before this site got big. Was easy to spot that gareth bale or leighton baines at lb who suddenly were amazing options. I study all the stats myself anyway by watching and reading a lot.

What has changed too is the strength of the league. between 2006-13 there was more big guns and more whipping boys; I'd regularly take -8's and get results greater than if I hadn't. It's very difficult to get regular risks to pay off now. There were more big guns, more clean sheets, more predictability and more reward for being daring.

The price rise changes had a big impact too. Sometimes you'd take a hit to get someone who you knew had every chance of a 0.8/0.9 rise over three weeks. I used to have team values over 110m almost every season, because I was bold, made early moves, benefited with team value even if the risks didn't always pay off.

My playstyle has been entirely compromised in recent seasons, partially down to these factors. It's a lot more boring now, I don't have the patience + i'm too glass half full about the whole thing.

What I propose is a 2nd fantasy game, exactly the same rules, captains, budget, 3 player team limitations...but no price rises and a free hit every week. That's where the skill would come in, picking a different team every week, the one YOU think is best. we couldn't all pick the scout picks every week could we? Well...i'm sure some could...

Correct but are the chips actually the thing that rewards those who understand the ins and outs of the game? It is still pure luck. TC Aguero for his super hattrick in a SGW and TC Kane in a DGW for his 2 pointer. Similar cases for BB and FH chip too.

don't get these arguments. Like any game/sport you can get out what you put in (whilst always factoring in the luck element etc.)

There are still plenty of different ways to play FPL successfully - some take various levels of hits, some don't. Some play purely on stats, some rely a lot more on the eye test etc.

Controversial and unpopular opinion coming right up but I think FPL should charge to play the game. This will bring in the serious players only. They would need to tighten up their rules but it would stop a lot of the issues too ...multiple teams, people playing for a weekly high score, players playing a team just to increase team value etc. A fiver entry and they could them look at some better prizes too

Yer your probably right. I do belive it would benefit the more serious players and from somone who is willing to spend 100 quid joining a league id have no issue paying a fee to enter. They would have to start getting their decisions right though if I was a paying customer 😆

Don't be so elitist. The game should be for anyone who wants to play, not just for those who are prepared to pay and take it seriously.
And there's nothing to stop you setting up or joining mini-leagues with entry fees for serious players only if that's what you want - or trying out other fantasy football games that do have entry fees.

But abolishing or reducing the value of the weekly high-score prize would be a big improvement in my opinion.

Good point well made. Although my argument against chips is different. I play in two quite competitive mini leagues where a lot of people take it quite seriously. As such what I don't like about them is we all largely play them at the same time and I felt the game was more interesting without them.

As I've already said. I think the game would be better if chips had to be played in single/non blank game weeks. Would make it so much more random and interesting. Suddenly every player would have one of say 30 weeks to play their chips. Not one of 3 or 4.

      1. LÖrKingMuch
        • 15 Years

But you're always free to play your chips whenever you want or to not use them at all, some SGW TCs have beenore successful than DGW ones. What I'd totally disagree with is a dumbing down of the game. It's great the way it is, and a new little chip thrown in to give us a new challenge and toy to play with like the FH this season is spicing things up just right.

More random might be more interesting for you, but it would also mean more luck and less skill.
You might find it a bit frustrating if your superior skill is outweighed by another player's better luck.
And there are plenty of other decisions to be made in the course of a season, even if you all decide to follow the same chip strategy.

Appreciate all the positive feedback guys. I was actually expecting more resistance from the guys this was aimed at but it seems most agree with me??

I'm also against a paywall for FPL. Even a £3 fee will see that 5 mil players reduce to below 50k. Different countries have different gambling regulations which would prob make it impossible for FPL to be truly worldwide. I've been in £100+ money leagues and guys gave up before Christmas. I think they have a good balance right now as the game keeps growing each year.

Actually, I'm just having a hard time thinking about how to reply since it seems you've painted an inaccurate picture of the arguments you are fighting against (i.e. what I've said and what I mean), and your rebuttal is quite a simplification of reality, which requires too much effort to pick apart. A lot of it is obviously true, but misses the point, in my opinion. I may reply tonight. I may not.

"I think a better argument could be made against sites like FFS even existing. Anyone not using sites like this is at a disadvantage. Again, I only blame the players for not taking a few minutes to look them up."

I do think FPL would be more interesting without sites like FFS, because then everyone would have to make their own research, make their own moves, and so on. One of the problems is people get hooked to these sites, and then always when they are in between two (or more) players they always come here asking which one to get. Isn't that very stupid? They should not be hooked to sites like FFS and make their own decisions! Would be more fun to them too, at least in many cases!

I do understand that as these sites do exist it's everyone's own fault if they don't look them up, but imo these sites should not exist in the first place because these sites nullify the whole purpose of the game (for me), because, as mentioned above, these sites are spoon-feeding information, even selling information(!) to anyone! You don't have to play the game yourself!! You don't have to be able to play the game well in order to play it well!! It's like playing chess against someone who gets all his moves from a friend sitting next to him! What's the point?!? How can anyone enjoy playing the game that way?!?!

It means downgrade Mahrez to Ramsey to fund the other two.
