Manchester United give Arsene Wenger a fine send-off – applause, hugs and a stoppage time winner – but an injury for Romelu Lukaku spoils the party.

There were classy displays all around Old Trafford before and during yesterday’s 2-1 win over Arsenal, with the crowd hailing the Gunners manager, Sir Alex Ferguson embracing his former bitter rival and Paul Pogba reminding him of what a top quality French midfielder can do.

The 13.1%-owned Pogba scored the opener and brought in maximum bonus for his second double-digit haul in four Gameweeks.

He is now United’s form player heading into Double Gameweek 37 (bha whu), with three goals and an assist across those last four matches.

Priced at 7.9, his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) popularity is likely to pick up as the potential of his attacking team-mates drops off.

The script suggested that Arsenal old boy Alexis Sanchez would punish his former boss with a continuation of his own fine form – he had a goal and three assists from his last three starts.

But he had to make do with an assist when his header was brilliantly kept out by Hector Bellerin, leaving Pogba with a tap-in.

The Chilean’s premium 11.5 price is likely to deter most managers from Double Gameweek investment, with a raft of cheaper options available from Spurs, Man City and, indeed, his own team.

One of those, Jesse Lingard (6.0), did himself no favours with another blank. The England international now has only two assists from the last seven Gameweeks and was hauled off just after the hour-mark for the second match running.

Two other midfielders did at least combine to win yesterday’s match for United, with substitute Marouane Fellaini heading home Ashley Young’s cross.

Issues from front to back

Lukaku’s 26.7% ownership were hoping for great things from their man, particularly as he was up against a travel-sick Arsenal defence made weaker still by the demands of the Europa League.

What they got was 49 minutes, one point and an ankle issue that perhaps makes him a big doubt for Friday’s trip to Brighton that kicks off Double Gameweek 37.

Coach Jose Mourinho, rather tellingly, spoke post-match of Lukaku’s recovery in terms of the FA Cup final, still nearly three weeks away, rather than a league match a mere five days from now.

“I don’t think it’s something, or I hope it’s not, that in this moment keeps him immediately out of a game that is in three weeks’ time. But I don’t know. I never, when I finish a game and a player is injured, immediately go for good or bad news. I wait a bit more.”

The Fantasy ramifications of the problem are somewhat clearer.

Unless he is fit enough for Mourinho to risk him this weekend, his 11.5 value will easily fund a direct replacement for the doubles, most notably Man City’s Gabriel Jesus (10.3), while also freeing up money for purchases elsewhere in FPL managers’ teams.

Indeed, there’s no surprise to see that Lukaku is among the top three players for sales (16,000+) over the last 24 hours, with Jesus the most transferred in (26,000+).

The situation also promotes the cause of Marcus Rashford (7.3), who is likely to be used as the lone striker in Lukaku’s absence for those trips to Brighton and West Ham.

The England international is not in the best of form, however. He’s blanked for five straight Gameweeks, although he’s started only one of them.

Things aren’t much better in defence.

United have now kept just two clean sheets in nine league matches, with the 44.8% of managers who have made David De Gea the most owned keeper in FPL getting precious little for the major outlay his 5.9 price tag demands.

Chris Smalling (5.7) remains the key backline performer.

The centre-half has offset the lack of clean sheets with three goals in the last seven Gameweeks and has now started 13 league matches in a row.

Who partners him at the heart of the defence remains fluid, however, with Phil Jones replaced by Victor Lindelof for the Arsenal match.

Over the last 24 hours, Smalling has earned more new owners than any team-mate, just ahead of Pogba (12,000+ to 11,000+) in the top five most bought players.

Sweeping changes nearly come good

Arsenal’s vital Europa League semi-final second leg in Madrid on Thursday was always going to prompt Wenger into changes for the Old Trafford trip.

But the scope of those changes was still surprising, with seven players coming in, including youngsters Konstantinos Mavropanos (at centre-half) and midfielder Reiss Nelson.

Bellerin, Granit Xhaka and Alex Iwobi were the only three outfield players to keep their places from the Gameweek 35 side, and there was also a place for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, back from injury after a three-match absence.

The former United man equalised yesterday, from Xhaka’s assist, to briefly make his case for the Gunners’ Double Gameweek 37 (BUR lei).

But that idea took a knock when the Armenian limped off with a knee problem after 75 minutes. Iwobi and keeper David Ospina also picked up injuries, as Wenger detailed post-match.

“I took off Mkhitaryan because he had a little knock on his knee again, on the same knee. We could see that just looking at him in the dressing room. Ospina has a rib problem and Alex Iwobi has a hamstring problem, so we’ll see how well everyone recovers. Thursday will come very quickly.”

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang started up front after being benched for Gameweek 35’s Europa League dress rehearsal.

That had led to him being the most sold player (207,000+) for Gameweek 36 and, despite returning to the central role occupied more recently by Alexandre Lacazette, he blanked for the first time in seven matches.

The Gunners’ schedule, which includes a Gameweek 38 trip to Huddersfield, remains attractive, but everything hinges on their European fate now.

Should they, as expected, fail to get past Atletico Madrid, then rotation for the run-in will be far less likely, particularly as the first fixture of next week’s double, against Burnley, will be Wenger’s last home match in charge.

The likes of Lacazette, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey could be back on our radars as a result, but investment in the backline is fraught with risk. Arsenal have kept just one clean sheet in 11 matches and only three on the road all season, which is hardly ideal as two of their last three matches are away from the Emirates.

Effective ownership concerns me. Tonight for example in the top 10K every point Kane earns me goes towards a red arrow due to high captaincy among others.

May make me go Kane. Jesus under consideration though.

Think City will batter Huddersfield and Brighton...whereas WBA have beaten Man Utd, drawn with Liverpool recently. Plus Newcastle are not conceding much.

On the other hand, every point by which Jesus outscores Kane would contribute towards catching up with or overtaking those who captain Kane, and also improve your chances of breaking into the top thousand if Kane is the more popular captain amongst top thousand players.

Always captain the player you expect to score the most points, irrespective of effective ownership (unless you need to hedge your bets by shadowing your mini-league rivals, or are more scared of a big rankings drop than excited by a big rankings boost).

There is, but it would just be pure speculation.

Sterling feels like the right choice. Perhaps he misses a start in one game but he should still get at least 120 mins and in his current form could push for 20 pts against poor opposition.

Kane is 5 behind Salah for the Golden Boot, but Sterling is in 4th place and needs only 3 goals to go equal third with Aguero. Sterling is also an assist machine (11 so far vs Kane's 2)

I'm leaning to Sterling(TC) and have set it as such already, but will wait for the Captain Sensible article before deciding finally.

If I knew Sterling would start both, I would definitely go him. Jesus rarely hauls despite Manchester City scoring loads, but could definitely happen with those fixtures. Any chance they'll give Nmecha a start? They got nothing to play for..

Pep: "Just like the last game against Swansea, we take it seriously and we respect the competition ... Huddersfield, Brighton, Southampton, they deserve for us to be who we are all season. It wouldn't be fair to them if we came down here for a holiday. We have to show who we are, who we've been all season, that's why we scored nine goals in two games."

Is rotation actually that much of an issue for City?

Pep is on record as wanting to beat records, finish strongly, and also be fair to the rest of the league in being competitive through to the end of the season.

Sterling and Jesus are clearly in his first choice starting 11 at the moment. DSilva is clearly getting the time off to be with his family, so can be dropped as an asset. KDB is crucial to City’s playing style, regardless of whether he scores FPL points or not doing it.

That basically leaves Sané and BSilva fighting for a starting place on the left of the front 3, and Gundogan in pole position next to Fernandinho in the middle. Yes, players will get subbed, but that’s Pep’s current starting front 6 positions.

We get Sterling and Jesus - they’re as nailed as any player in the game. Gamble on BSilva or Sane, sure. But it’s not a big problem, surely?

Everybody seems so obsessed with Kane yet his points return has been average this season for his price. 191pts from a player who is currently 13m is not good value. Sterling has been a more prolific points scorer this season both in total points and PPG and has 2 plum home fixtures yet we are debating who should be (C)/(TC)?

Has to be sterling or Jesus for me. Form and fixtures, freedom to express themselves. Jane's games aren't as easy as they look with West Brom picking up form and Newcastle are not going to be on the end of a thrashing either. Kane Is safe and boring choice but I expect the city boys to outdo him this week.

I'm starting to lean towards Sterling or Jesus. Kane's fixtures really aren't as good as they look. West Brom have been doing well under the new manager, and Newcastle will know how to contain Kane. Can't see Spurs scoring more than two goals in either game.

Expected goals conceded by WBA since Moore took over: 0.66, 0.64, 1.64, 1.58 = 4.52. 1.13 goals per game conceded
Expected goals conceded by Newcastle in the last 4: 1.09, 1.42, 0.95, 0.70 = 4.16. 1.04 goals per game conceded
Expected goals scored by Spurs in the last 4: 1.39, 1.80, 0.45, 1.36 = 5. 1.25 goals per game scored

Expected goals conceded by Brighton in the last 4: 1.49, 2.50, 1.36, 1.55 = 6.90. 1.73 goals per game conceded
Expected goals conceded by Huddersfield in the last 4: 2.54, 1.53, 0.31, 0.94 = 5.32. 1.33 goals per game conceded
Expected goals scored by Man City in the last 4: 3.43, 3.62, 3.42, 2.29. = 12.76. 3.19 goals per game scored

Obviously tonights game v Watford will provide us with invaluable information on Spurs most up to date form. But looking at the numbers as they stand, City are scoring 2-3 times as many goals per game as Spurs are. Additionally, City are facing 2 sides with worse recent defensive records than the 2 sides Spurs are facing. Furthermore, City play 2 home matches, whereas Spurs face one at home, one away.

Theres also a question of goal involvement % when assessing Kane v a City player. When comparing Kane v Sterling, they both have goal involvement of 50% amongst their most recent matches.

So as it stands, a captaincy of Sterling is looking the standout option at present.

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 37

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will be selected at random at 8:30am Wednesday and then asked to submit their XI by 9am by Friday by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

Had planned to get in David Silva for the 37DGW. I can go for Sane or Sterling but it requires a -4.

Would you take the risk he will play both, given that he missed the west ham game on compassionate leave? Or is it the opposite, that he becomes more nailed on as a result of being rested.

        Best option out of these?

        A) Bailly, Mahrez & Vardy ➡️ Dummet, Sterling & Jesus (-4)

        B) Bailly, Mahrez, Vardy & Barnes ➡️ VDH, Sterling, Mahrez & Ayew (-8)

        C) Bailly, Willian, Mahrez & Vardy ➡️ Mawson, Lingard, Sterling & Jesus (-8)

        D) Willian, Mahrez & Vardy ➡️ Fernandinho, Sterling & Jesus (-4)

        E) Willian, Mahrez, Vardy & Barnes ➡️ Fernandinho, Sterling, Jesus & Ayew (-8)

        Have exact cash for A, B & C before tonight’s price rises.
But possible bans for Salah or Ayew are worrying.
If I wait I can get Dummet over VDH in option C.

Have had a go at re-drafting the wording for the assist rule to try and take out as much subjectivity as possible - it's not easy! What does everyone think?

"The last player of the credited goal scorers team to touch the ball before the scorer as long as no more than two of the opposition touched the ball before the scorer first touched it, unless one of the following occurs:
        1) The goal is scored from a direct free kick or penalty, in which case the assist goes to the person fouled
        2) If only one opposition player touched the ball before the scorer first touched it, but that opposition player was in clear possession of the ball, in which case no assist shall be awarded
        3) The scorer lost possession of the ball and an opposition player was in clear possession of the ball before scoring, in which case no assist shall be awarded.

"Clear possession" is defined as having clear control of the ball for at least one touch and does not include deflections"

"The last teammate to touch the ball prior to the goalscorer, is awarded the assist."

It's that simple. No debate, argument or subjectivity required.

That removes the subjectivity for sure 🙂 Would mean that there could be assists that are never assists though (e.g. if a keeper drop-kicks the ball straight to an opposition player who scores)

Doesn't matter. Keep it simple and argument free.
Sa if Firmino has a shot, Butland catches it and boots it straight to Salah, who scores. Give Firmino the assist.
              So much easier.

Means we don't have these bullshit boring debates and discussions over what's an assist EVERY year. Word it how I suggested and be done with it.

Getting fouled for a free kick isn't really an assist either.
Nor is a goalkeeper rolling it out to someone who then runs the length of the pitch, skinning 11 players on the way, before scoring, really... but the keeper would still get an assist.

The one that really needs addressing is players scoring from their own rebound - the player that played then in for their first attempt (i.e. the player that created the chance) should be given the assist, 100%.

Thank you. Outside looking in (American who hasn’t grown up with this game, and who thinks scoring rules in other sports can be leveraged), I’d want a rule that was as simple as possible, and not with a list of exceptions. Assists in football should be like hockey. Last scoring team player to pass the ball to the guy who scored. If there is an incidental touch along the way, or a rebound, it’s then up to the official scorer using intent. Intent and subjective judgment is applied to many other rulings in this and other sports. This totally works in hockey, and when I played fantasy hockey, no one complained about who got a goal or assist. No such thing as own goals either. This is another absurd official scoring artifact of football.

How is an own goal absurd? If I get it off my goalkeeper, turn straight back around and blast it in to my own net... what else do you want to call it besides an own goal?

Goal goes to the last attacking player who touched it in hockey. There are many more accidental bounces, ricochets, and rebounds in that sport, yet there’s no confusion about goals and assists.

"We are not clinical. In the last period we can kill the game, but the game was still in the balance,’ said Conte. ‘If your best scorer has only 12 goals, it is difficult to fight for something important.

Conte kicking Morata when he is down and basically blaming their entire season on him with that comment.... seems rich when he's the one who sent that text to Costa

Don’t agree with this, firstly Costa wanted out before Conte sent him any text, interviews with him complaining about the weather and wanting to go back to Spain where about way before Conte dis owned him.

Secondly, if your top scorer only has 12 goals that is t just a reflection on him but the entire team, depends which way you choose to interpret it.

Lastly, he’s is entirely right in what he is saying

Am in the same boat with removing Burnley players to prepare for the BB in GW37. I am looking at Bertrand (5.3) in defence, something to play for, will play both 37 games, potential attacking returns. I already have Mawson who is another good option and also has a much better GW38 fixture.

Really hard to tell. The footage I have seen is inconclusive and I think the ref seen the incident too.
So I think it is a tough call.

Sadly it's a must to get news on this before transfer moves. Changes everything strategy wise.

3, assuming you have DGWer who can start in place of Bailly. Otherwise 2.
